  1. English is taught from Middle School (aka Junior High School). Of course, it should be noted that High School, and beyond is not manditory (clarification: that's attending the school). Also, from either this past school year, or this year, English is also being taught in elementary school. Though, it should be noted that it's not by native English speakers, and is by Japanese teachers who don't necessarily have the proper training; as the whole thing was rushed into place (but that's a topic for another website altogether). So, why the bad English in anime? The answer is fairly obvious: the prime market is Japanese speakers who have a similar or lesser level of English ability. It's only there to make it look more "cool" and/or "realistic", and it's not there to be accurate. Another way to look at the situation is: how many of you have seen shirts/posters with Chinese characters/Kanji/Hanja that are backwards and/or upside down? Hmmm... maybe that should be how many of you even noticed that they are backwards and/or upside down? The number of you that say yes is about equal to the number of people in Japan viewing anime who say "hey, that English is wrong!". And regarding the question of paying foreigners in Japan to read lines and correct English - DYRL DID do that, but only because it had the budget for it AND the creators bothered to put the accuracy in to make the movie more realistic. Most other anime productions don't have the budget to pay the animators, artists and other production staff enough money, let alone afford frills like accuracy of the foreign languages that appear in their production that the vast majority of their target audience don't understand.
  2. In a way it makes sense. The Factory Satellites are designed to support a main fleet. After the Earthlings defeated Bodolza's main fleet, and got their locations from the defected Breetai, it's not a stretch of the imagination that the UN Forces are able to capture so many in such a short time. Though, it does beg the question: what happened after those first 6 months? Did they capture the other 10 to 30 Factory Satellites? Did they stop the capture missions to consolidate their forces and manufacturing capabilities, and start a production run-up to space emigration and another wave of capture missions? If I remember correctly, there's also a nuance that the 3-Star Factory ship in the M7 fleet is also a Factory Satellite (or based on it's technology, or something along those lines).
  3. You're just getting that with 3D? It's happened with almost every 2D movie I've seen in the theatre that uses CG in the majority of a quickly panning shot. Anyway, I'm with Mog - 3D is just a gimmick to distract the viewer from bad writing. Gimmie a good story with good characters directed by a good direct. I don't need any gimmicks, please!
  4. Yup. If memory serves, they were hired to read some of the Zentraadi lines to make them sound more "alien". You can see a picture of them in the TiA:DYRL book.
  5. Work in progress... this one is making my head spin with the revelations coming hard and fast. This, like, totally flies in the face that the UN Forces had just one Factory Satellite within half a year of the end of SWI, and the Zentraadi had only one type of Factory Satellite - and that the Factory Satellite acted on its own! Mechanic: SDFM Zent 10a Factory Satellite: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/inde...g38229#msg38229 Mileage will vary for the MII aficionados, of course.
  6. Completed: Mechanic: D7 etc 01a Patrol Corps Mother-Ship http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/inde...g38217#msg38217 It's a shame that the entire datablock was full of "under investigation". I think (Japanese) readers complained about it, because they disappeared in later issues. Luckily the size comparison gives an approximate size: less than 100 m.
  7. #15 nice episode. Especially nice because they used the stargate. A LOT! If anything, that's my main complaint with the later seasons and newer series - they don't use the stargate enough. This episode has a lot going on - revelations of characters' past, present, and probably most importantly: where the Destiny is, has been and where it is going. Plus a nice revisit of a mysterious location already visited, too. Two thumbs up.
  8. Ok. There's nothing in this sentence that expressly states that it is because of scanlations that sales are falling. Nor does it say that publishers are trying to sell their product without the purchaser being aware of the content in it. Also, as has been the case for well over the past decade, Diamond Comic Distributors Inc.'s Previews catalogue still offers previews of upcoming comics. (Personally I prefered the Advance Comics order catalogue, but Marvel comics gets the blame for the demise of that much more anime import friendly company.) Publishers like Dark Horse Comics also offer online previews of their products - which I interpret the quote as implying. So, again, smart consumers have access to means to learn about the contents of a publication before purchasing. The writer appears to not be aware of manga published in Japan digitally for the mobile phone internet. This is a very big point that I felt screaming in my head as soon as I read the dates of the market "decline".

  10. You've misunderstood the situation. Smart consumers have access to means to learn about the contents of a publication before purchasing. Here's the website for Shonen Jump: http://www.shonenjump.com/j/ (which took all the time to type in the name into google to find). In some bookstores, smart consumers can also sample publications via tachiyomi. Of course, as bookstores are not libraries, some are wrapping products in plastic to prevent abuses of the generosity (and keep items from becoming unsaleable due to tachiyomi mangling). Nevertheless, if you ask a store clerk to look inside, most will open it for you to have a look (not a read). So, you're arguement holds no merit, as the manga industry isn't telling people to blindly buy, but they are telling them to not abuse IT that make IP theft possible.
  11. Didn't someone already mention that it's not on Japanese TV for free? There are things like commercials, and the messages of sponsors. Take Macross F for example, in all of the fansubs and raws that I've seen, NONE of them contain commercials. Some of them have the sponsor message splash screen, but not all. And those messages are not translated. So... is it for free? No. Are us viewers of these things living up to our end of the bargain... you know, watching and understanding the commercial messages? No.
  12. No. It's akin to a group buy.
  13. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you're placing the blame on the Japanese companies. If so, it's a fallacious arguement. For all we know, they do care, but they just don't have the budget to do something about it.* Another factor is that some countries have trade and legal restrictions that effectively inhibit distribution. For example, I know a publisher who won't release product in the USA because the publisher's insurer won't cover the territory as legal costs are too high as there are far too many false product liability lawsuits. * Gundam being a good example of a series that does have a budget to do something about international distribution.
  14. Not certain exactly how helpful for ALT and JET positions, but in general, any education in teaching English, whether that be a TESL/TEFL/TESOL certification all the way up to a degree in English teaching, is helpful. Not only are you more likely to get more job interviews, you're more likely to get paid a higher wage. (I have a TESL certificate that I can thank for raising the hourly rate of part-time jobs from ¥2500 to ¥3000 (it might have been ¥3500 in one case)). Korea is akin to Japan. The key difference is that visa's are tied to specific contracts in Korea, and some employers (specifically in the Hagwon) exploit that by not living up to their end of the contract completely. More info: Japan: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teaching_Engl..._language#Japan Japan - more up-to-date, accurate and legal: http://www.generalunion.org/ Korea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teaching_Engl...age#South_Korea
  15. Boy, you're just a bundle of negativity, aren't you?
  16. Interesting. Perhaps the worldguide will also include some hints of what happened after the landing of the Macross F fleet? Nevertheless, I'm glad that they've not only squeezed the VF-3000B (Bomber) in as an extra report, but it appears that they've also got the original "Advanced Valkyrie" model kit design in the side bar on the far right.
  17. Don't have time to read the article. Nevertheless, the situation in Japan: - global recession has effected the economy. Long story short, the adults most likely to spend money on more niche anime have less money to do so. - anime on mainstream TV, especially those aimed at kids is uneffected. If anything, the amounts that they watch will go up, as their parents have less money to spend on other things (PSP, DS, club, etc.). Conclusion: anime has survived the bubble years, the popping of the bubble, the 10+ year lack of economic growth, globalization, relaxation of labour laws, etc., etc., etc.. Currently, the government is saying that there is growth and the economy is recovering. In other words: same old, same old.
  18. Of the YF-24? No. Only what was seen in the series. I remember when the VF-25 image was first released, and Graham said that there's something in the nose cone. This page confirms what's in it: the ISC. After that, the article states that the prime differences between the VF-25 and VF-27 are variable wings (25), vs. cyborg pilot, armoured cockpit, and 4 thermonuclear turbine engines (27). With the 25 vs 27 ability chart, the 25 exceeds the 27 only in air power/proficiency (I'm taking this as atmospheric performance) and optional equipment.
  19. There you go. I never liked the people experience in Tokyo, either. Nevertheless, there's the rest of the country. Which begs the question, which other parts of Japan did you live in? I don't. Please stop as it perpetuates the misbelieve that it's an acceptable derogative. I was under the impression that Save was referring to workers having to dress up in a costume and hand out chirashi on the street to promote a business, not cosplay or people being fashionable. Nevertheless, it's good manners to ask first, before taking someones picture.
  20. Before I forget: glossary is now up to ゆ (yu). Up to 7 additional kana to go through (note that や (ya) only had 2 entries.)
