  1. I won't even comment on the M2 part of the discussion since this is Seto's area of expertise, being his baby for a long time now...
  2. Actually it is. SDFM was a typical anime series that no one expected to explode as it had. So all the familiar tropes of the era, were employed like hero paint jobs for the fighters, a more Japancentric understanding of how international militaries work as a civil service type job like in Japan as opposed to a contracted military service period, etc... Gundam still does this to this day for the most part. Starting in DYRL and fully embraced by Plus, Kawamori did change the aesthetic, probably as a result of his research for Plus (which didn't start out as a Macross story). Then the military became more recognizable to international audiences and the military equipment became more standardized. In M7 all the UNS forces were largely monochromatic in their color schemes, with the exception of the task force teams, Diamond Force, Emerald force, and the Jamming Birds. The Spec Ops Sound Force were given the individual hero color schemes. This continued in MF where all the VF-171 of the NUNS were in a Navy Blue color scheme and only the PMC had individual hero colors, Even the VF-171EX, being a task force team had mainly monocromatic color schemes with the exception of the hero valks of Alto and Luca, which sported different color striping. The difference now seen in publications, is that it appears each fleet uses its own color schemes for its military fighters. Maybe this is to easily identify aircraft from different task forces in joint fleet actions.
  3. If that is the case, it makes me wonder how much more advanced a Federal fighter of this generation is? I do agree it is becoming a worrying trend that PMC's are becoming the standard plot devices for Macross series. I get the idea of it since SK really can't have individually customized paint jobs (something the sponsors would want) on NUNS fighters, with the exception of the CAG fighters, as it detracts from the serious nature and standarizaton of Federal forces. Though, in publications, different fleets employ different paint schemes for their assigned fighter compliments. So conceivably, if Federal forces arrived in the cluster we could see VF's of different paint schemes depending on how many task forces are deployed to the region. It would be a cool way to showcase the Federal versions of the YF-24 derivative in multiple color schemes.
  4. Nah, this is an episode of talking heads and teenage angst aimed totally at the target demographic. Though the whole Kanami singing to Mikuno was a direct reference to M7 and Basara serenading a comatose Sivil, right down to the fetal position of Mikumo and her singing along when she begins to come to. This convinces me that this show is the spiritual sequel to M7, like MF was the spiritual sequel to SDFM, replete with its direct nods to that series. This episode was written to advance the story a little but more, to flesh out the love triangle and the stoke the Mikumo mystery before the reveal in episode 21. There was also the character reference to Makina and Reina's shady past, when Kanami mentions them getting sent to the brig, "again" when they are hacking the NUNS hospital ship's network.
  5. Yeah, I concluded that in another thread. She is the only one who would fit the parameters, unless they decide to include Macross the First characters into the continuity, which is entirely possible. The old standby of keeping games out of production continuities does not apply to the Macross universe, so manga would logically be included as well.
  6. Well, character driven stories that are shoe horned into a predetermined timeline always seem "forced", because the characters (as we've come to understand them) are not acting in a believable way according to their own character. Sometimes you need to adjust the timeline to accommodate the characters or change your characters (right back to the beginning) to accommodate your timeline. You can't have both and expect the story to hold up properly.
  7. Perhaps it's a testment against rushing the next series out. I think SK needs to open up the narrative to other writers, not necessarily in terms of growing the universe per se, but at least in expanding it with dramatic OVA's taking place in already established eras. This will keep the franchise alive between TV broadcasts which may take years to effectively develop.
  8. Basara as a plot device, I get it, but as the main hero character, I hated it. I don't want superman flying a valk and singing the same few songs in my ear every episode...
  9. No it was just very environmental: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle... which made it possible to turn a 25 episode series into 49 episodes.
  10. Well with Junna's English, she could be on her way to international recognition. Minori, will certainly have a singing career after this, but I don't see the same potential as Junna at this point. On a further note, if May'n studied her English she certainly has the pipes for international success.
  11. Well here's hoping they take that extra step in the second release. I found the fansubbed version and it was indeed fun and informative. The VHS tape was a nice touch!
  12. I can't say the same. M7 was too long and because of it, too repetitive. I also hated the 2 dimensional hero of Basara. The supporting cast I enjoyed far more.
  13. So then it really IS the spiritual sequel to M7 after all! Thank God it is only 25 episodes...
  14. That makes little sense to me. The Valks are more expensive trans-atmospheric aircraft. Yes they can transform, but are not at all suited for extended ground warfare and did I mention they were expensive? If that war doctrine were viable, then most current world governments would be dumping their armor in favor of aircraft, which is not the case. For a space navy they have little use for destroids, but so are tanks in any navy. Marine units and terrestrial ground based Armed forces would still need and use Destroid units and yes they are "cheaper" than valks, which is why they would be used. We haven't seen any need for destroid units since the Great Space war since all subsequent Macross shows are based in space. MD is the first in about 30 years that has dealt with any sort of terrestrial conflict and the lack of any sort of destroid presence is noticable especially considering the age of the colonies. The UNS deployment of Destroids could be seen as arguably effective (as far as we had seen in the show) during the Great Space War and the combat data from those encounters would serve later generations of the units. Certainly some lines would be dropped, but I am sure more than just a Chayenne type would have survived as production models in a logical universe. Apparently in universe, the VF-1 was one of the worst VF's the fly into combat, but yet they still developed more... Having a single type of weapons system in your military arsenal on a galactic scale is senseless to me.
  15. Different batch of episode writers it would appear. SK provides the outline and the writers, write it... The format isn't really to blame as it can work, but the episodes need to be deliberately constructed to act like sequences of an overall story.
  16. Besides the Basara situation in M7 that Seto already spoke to, it has to be the Varauta Fleet Carrier. I find it very difficult to accept that a colonial government would have the resources and time to, on their own, construct a state of the art battle wagon with all the bells and whistles and still construct a 200+ capital ship fleet. All of this without any nearby Zentradi factory satellite. The colonial world was barely 20 years old and they could build a new type of Fleet Carrier, along with support fleet all the while setting up colonial civilian centers on Varauta? That stretches credibility for me. My favorite aspect outside the mecha is the attempt to rationally explain the universe and the tech within it. Some may argue they don't always succeed, but it is nice to see them make a sincere effort in that respect.
  17. The series is suffering from "Second Act Lag (drag)" which happens in some movies. Where the first act is all about setting up the story, the second act is supposed to be about fleshing it out, but often writers bog it down with too much exposition forgetting about the action. Then the third act suddenly sees the story pace ramp up to the climax. The past two episodes are lagging the series as a whole. They are important to story development, but did not need two episodes dedicated to it. It would have been better to have "clues" and foreshadowing leading up to a few "aha" moments amidst the action. In many ways MF did this better than Delta has so far.
  18. I suspect you meant the SA is providing opposition to the Zentradi in the present day. Considering how 'Yuge the Zentradi forces still are after half a million years that is remarkable to me.
  19. Another aspect to consider. The Vajra were not expected by the rank and file of the fleet or its pilots. They were likely expecting to engage a Zentradi, Meltrandi task force or even pirates. These types of threats they were equipped for and had tactics to engage with. The Vajra took out at least a couple of Ghost squadrons in mere minutes before the order to send live troops in, came down. Then the fighters were being quickly dispatched before the SMS cavalry came along in their shiny new fighters to engage this enemy. An unknown alien species with frightful power like the Vajra would make anyone pee a little or even a lot!
  20. I would be shocked if it were either. SK has stated repeatedly he feels that the Megaroad 01 sailed off into the sunset and he didn't want to revisit that story.
  21. Not really, but if it works for you, I'm cool with it... That would be me. I was making the comment that SK and company were referencing the famous German jet with their numeric designation of the SV-262.
  22. They could, but the drones are re-charged by the Valks engine output, the Cheyenne doesn't appear to have the same type of power plant. I suspect the VF-31A's have military uses for the extra storage areas. Micro Missiles, Mission Packs and the like. The Siggies can be equipped with Super Packs, so it is fair to expect the Kairos have similar equipment, but for tactical use rather than special fold wave and holo projectors.
