LIVE ACTION ROBOTECH (WB gets the rights)
Keith replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
For the exact same reasons that Transformers was a reboot, this will be a story reboot as well. It'll most likely take place in a suedo contemporary era, most likely involve the gulf war as a backdrop for the origins. Something like an alien ship crashed in Iraq, and soldiers were really over there trying to claim a downed ship, or something inane like that. Hell, perhaps they'll pull the old area 51 thing, and have the ship being re-constructed underground for 50 years. The cast/characters will almost assuredly be entirely american, or at least 90% so. As others have said, the "veritechs" will likely be F-22's, or something simliar, likely only with 2 transformations, if any. They may go the route of having them be non-transformable giant robots. As for the rest, this si perfect hollywood fodder. Due to the rights issues, they have a free pass to completely re-write the base story. For once this totally works in their favor. I wouldn't expect any major story similarities aside from character names. The name Zentradi would almost assuredly have to go. In fact most things regarding the Zentradi will have to tread on very light ground. Likely they'll scrap them all together, in place of "the robotech masters," or "the invid." The more I think about this, the more a suedo Macross styled story, with Mospeada styled aliens makes sense. That way HG can still keep their shadow chronicles tie in with little canon problem. As for this whole mess being bad for Macross, I totally disagree. This is one of the best things to happen in the U.S. for Macross in quite a while. If Big West has indeed hammered out their claims over the intellectual property in Japan, then chances are Funimation, ADV, or Bandai visual will make long necessary licensing attempt on a Macross series to test the waters. If there's one thing that's certain in the entertainment business, it's that is something potentially popular is on the horizon, then things similar to it will be bought up to ride that sales wave. We may actually get DYRL or Zero out of this, not to mention the new series. And dare I dream 7? -

If you guys are expecting anything other than Independence Day, then I don't know what to tell you. Two things can be safely assumed. The name "Macross" will appear absolutely nowhere, and Big West won't get involved, because they seem to be smart enough not to whore out the franchise. -

I'd pay good money to see Bruce Campbell grab a women & yell "Now watch jet jockey!" BTW. Does anyone else find it odd that the Yunes, who seem to have been involved in everything robotech for the past several years, are not mentioned anywhere in the HG staff? -

Ace Combat 6:Skies of Liberation for XBOX360!

At least you're getting Ace Combat! -
Don't even get me started on dubbed live action movies....that's a whole mess in and of itself. Especially when the fanbase there exists specifically because it's so bad (dubbed monster movies & what not). Slightly related true story. I ran into the guy who played Spike in the Cowboy Bebop dub one day at a supermarket. I was in line ahead of him, and he was buying flowers for mothers day. Someone behind him asked him a question about the flowers, and upon his answer I immediately reccognized his voice. He was amazed that I knew it was him, as that apparently rarely happened. Even funnier, was him trying to explain to the guy in line behind him what he did for a living .

Yup, dub Ed doesn't even remotely hold a candle to Japanese Ed. Same goes for Spike & Vicious. I like to attribute the whole sub issue to driving. If you can succefully drive, and take in all of the visual information around you without hitting anything, then you can watch subtitles. Words after all are also pictures in themselves.

Dubs suck, all dubs suck, period! As far as I'm concerned, you're not truly watching a show unless it's in its original language.

I'm so glad I waited on picking up the R2 of DYRL all of these years. I don't see how any sane fan can resist the memorial box! -
Ugly & Beautiful world was...well, it had that cool metalic red in the intro? How often do you see that in animation!

Eva hasn't even remotely touched upon the marketting & re-re-imagining that series like Tenchi have. Not to mention the uber-franchise that is Gundam.

The Aim for the Top! Gunbuster Thread v2.0
Keith replied to Noriko Takaya's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Finish watching Diebuster, the last 3 episodes take a similar turn. -
Eva is more guilty of marketting than anything else how? I trust Anno & Gaiax, they hasn't let me down yet (Melody of Oblivion wasn't that great, but still enjoyable). Besides, they freakn' created Gunbuster!

My main concern is inexpensive future-proofing. Since we're in the same region as Japan now, importing Blue-Ray's are incredibly easy, not requiring any player modification. Only downside is, they still block R2 DVD's. And while I'm sure modded BR players will be out eventually, they'll also likely be quite expensive for a while.

It's going to be a long wait to see these licensed. I wonder who will win this time
-
I'm going to wait for blue-ray release, or for Bandai Visual to bring this box out over here, whichever less likely event happens first. I'm sooo tempted to get this, but like the 7 box's, I must resist! BTW, has anyone written Bandai Visual to bug them about releasing this stuff? I think I'm going to right now!

I can't wait to watch this show!

Watching more Macross to get prepared can't hurt, especially since 7 gives a lot more backstory on the Protoculture. Kawamori does love his self contained stories though. -
Battlestar Galactica Discussion

As I'm finally nearing the end of the Babylon 5 box sets, I've been considering checking this show out. Quick question. Is the miniseries included in the first season box set, or do you have to pick up that seperate disc. -

Damn, unfortunately, the Japanese fanbase hasn't caught on to our superior american bootlegging & equipment hiding techniques! -

I like the idea of stealing back the "HOOOMMMIIINGG LAAAAAAAASSSEERRR!" from Gunbuster & Gall Force, although there's nothing saying that there can't be a super High Manuever Missile developed in the future. Since VFX-2 is somewhat cannon, the Sound Jamming system could also be in play (i.e. making missiles & radar totally useless). And now that I think about it, the 2070 era would also lend itself to a much larger universe. The enemy this time may be a fully independent human threat. With the U.N. Spacy stretching itself out across space, only so much control could be contained over individual planets. Where VFX-2 had a rogue coorperation, Macross F could have a fully anti-U.N. Spacy federation of planets type deally. -
There's a new MGS4 video up at the playstation store. I was honestly a little freaked out by the Gekkou's when I first saw them, but now...this is going to be an interesting game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgUaQfxIItY I hope now more than ever though that there will be a Japanese audio option.

I'm sure you've been asked this before, but Graham, what did you think of Gunbuster?
