  1. Seto, you mentioned in the Battletech Clanners thread that there are no true black hats in Macross. Is this group in AL!!!!!! used as a Macross Grey hat, like all other protagonists in the Macross series? I also find it hilariously ironic: Heimdall is a political group (from the Lyran Commonwealth faction of Battletech) that exists to serve as a check to any excesses of Loki, the Lyran Commonwealths official secret police

    Heimdall (organization) - BattleTechWiki (sarna.net)

Is there a concise review of this movie, front to back? Google... actually is useless on this subject.

Macross doesn't really HAVE a rogues gallery. That sort of concept requires, fundamentally, a failure to come to an understanding, and Macross is largely more hopeful than that.

The franchise doesn't have recurring antagonists, because today's nemesis is tomorrow's friend.

That's actually a common theme in Battletech (or any fictional setting) but you are kinda wrong. The Zentradi, in general, are a reoccurring threat (often only mentioned in passing or implied) as well as the Anti-UN (later known as General Galaxy). What Macross lacks, compared to, say, Star Wars, is it's Palpatine and Darth Vader; Micronauts's Baron Karza; Stefan Amaris or The Word of Blake faction from Battletech. It's never gone particularly political, mostly because it was a japanese IP meant to sell toys and model kits. Yes, SW & BT/MW sell figurines/minuatures too but both settings have far more political polish than Macross ever had... Now i dont know if that's good or bad...

  3. Wait? Whut? The Clans are supposed to be all Black Hat wearing A**holes (save Clan Wolf, who wear very fashionable GREY hats, per Stackpole Fiat as i understand). You want to even try to interduce Battletech story concepts into the Macross extended universe?

*cracks knuckles* I'll just let TEX, from the Black Pants Legion explain the Inner Sphere (and everything else). WARNING: pROFAnity is used, liberally.

Seta is extremely accurate (and i'm shocked that he's familiar with the setting). The only way a UNS/NUNS society could develop a direction tangent equal to what The Clans requires a story macguffin: a misfold into the past. Even then, you need at lot of things to happen... Actually that idea would be funny: A society based on Destroids?

Can we just all agree that wanna-be Imp Officer is a knucklehead?

Dude could have just listened to his boss and his quite logical reasons.

But Dickhead had to be the turd in the punch bowl.  Probably pissed off all of his staff.  And he probably got at least half of those Corpo. guys killed on the planet.

    Idiot.

He wants to be the next Capt Neeter (or something Imperial Officer). That's why his ambition is so wet, it drips. That's why he's such an asshat.

Now that Box that Seto bashes as unimportant will be important because what have we NOT seen yet in 3 episodes so far? actual IMPs. Kassa is so unimportant to the Empire (that means Safe, as far as the Empire is concerned) that they subcontract their security requirements to rent-a-cops. That box (the Macguffin for this story) is what gets actual IMP interest (that is, why the Vamp Imp chick from the promos shows up presumably in Esp 4 or later).

Even in the Macross setting, the organizational model for units of Variable Fighters isn't even the same between the different branches of the armed forces.

In the real world, you'd end up with a hundred subtle variations just based on differences between national navies, air forces, and so on.  Not to mention different organization for the different types and mission profiles different models of VF have.  The US armed forces, for instance, have aviation arms in each of the five main branches of service, though only three of those five (the Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force) operate fighter aircraft and have their own respective organizational models.

Realistically, I doubt Valkyries would find much use in any branch of service in the real world.  They're only ubiquitous in the Macross universe because the Zentradi justify having giant robots.  Without the overtechnology materials that makes them possible in the story, they would be a maintenance nightmare fit to make the Harrier seem reliable, so costly that nobody would ever field one, and so complex they'd spent far more time on the ground being repaired than in the air.  If the overtechnology materials and other technological advancements were in play, they'd be better suited to conventional weapons like tanks, helicopters, and conventional aircraft for warfare against other humans.  (That aside, the price tag alone would ensure that Valkyries would never displace conventional tanks.  Given what's said about the flyaway cost of a single VF-1A, the Army could field two whole companies of conventional main battle tanks for the cost of a single VF-1.)

If we were to ignore the practicality aspects, I'd expect to see them simply replace conventional aircraft in existing Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps organizations... but mainly or only in strike fighter or attacker squadrons where their air-to-ground capabilities and high-caliber machine guns could be leveraged to their best advantage.

+1000. One thing never depicted was minor defects (unless the plot required it, examples being when Kakazaki had hull damage and was ordered to RTB or What's his face from Delta going excessive on his maneuvering propellant in Delta), really nothing storywise in dealing with the background maintenance.

The stories also never dove into details like squadrons (names, numbers, airwings, etc), all of that is fandom speculation, save a small number (Pink Peckers, anyone?)

There is some use to having a variable fighter on your inventory (how many F-14s can reach lower earth orbit?) but like Seto said, maintaining that asset would be excessive, in terms of parts manufacturing, the materials used in crafting, the training devices*, the GSE involved (which might be specific to the VF only thus a space sink on a carrier)...

    * because the variable nature of the machine, you would need to either build a fake city in order to be able to train Urban Combat as a curriculum or forcibly remove civilians from a city zone (Rhode Island? EVERYBODY needs to move out of state, NOW).

I just got back from this,  and its about what I expected.    The CG Vger is probably the worst of the items they added.     Overall I enjoyed it then I saw Star Trek 2 was listed.. and I am sold.

Are they gonna do an updated version of WoK (and the other 4 TMP era films)?

Very true. I actually served with a DASH. And the story definitely happened. 😂

good guy though. Knows everything about every bond movie.

My favorite: HAMBURGLAR. Because he looked just like the HAMBURGLAR from McDonald’s.

There was a Legacy Hornet Driver, during either the 08 or '10 Ike Cruise, that I seen on one of the birds: callsign 'Blitch'.

Because of what I did in the Navy, although I will enjoy the planes (very much so), I'll be the one looking for SE. Literally everything that I would look for, has been replaced in the past 12 years (A-31Bs Tugs-> A-49s; A-3 (CYLOP'd NC-2A GPUs) -> Don't know its MIL Spec #; P-25 Fire truck -> P-25A (You can't tell the difference outside of its TEC, the 25A has a different motor and Front End)... But I'm a nerd.

    NASWOGS!!!

  8. I've watched two eps so far... and they work for me.

Now, on Pike knowing his fate. They have only shown him in the chair (so he at least knows that much) but does he know about the Talosian aspect of his fate? If yes, will we see him making a pack with Spock to ensure things go as planned? or does the Taloians only come into play after their planet is discovered?

that begs another question: Will they recreate, as a episode, the events that occurred in the TOS pilot episode in 1965?

I've been reading these threads for years now and my first reaction to mentions of the Oberth class is still "wait, like the Grissom?"

Honestly the Macrossian Oberth-class ... is arguably better armed than the TMP era Oberth-class. Grissom's only advantage is speed.

  10. It's been discussed that UN Spacy (and NUNS) policy when it comes to any unaligned Zentradi Fleet is to either flee or utterly destroy it. I have another idea...

Why cannot an Emigrant fleet Claim to be The Protoculture and give the encountered fleet new orders (or more specifically, orders that either amend their existing orders or add to them)?

  11. I've been following this channel for a fat minute, utterly intrigued in his interest in 70's Super Mecha Kaiju... and then he drops this nuclear device of LOVE... I've asked him to do the Shogun Gun warriors (the Marvel Comics property from the 1970-80's) as well as Red Ronin (which was also featured in the Marvel comics version of Godzilla in the 1970s and 80s). Now he already did each Shogun unit (as their original Japanese versions) but now he did this.... and from the moment it started, i weeped the tears of an Otaku... Tis Beautiful, is it not?

... they're really reaching to defend this mess, aren't they?

This is the best they could do grenade-fishing for praise for Star Trek: Picard?  A handful of sites known to be paid shills for CBS/ViacomCBS/Paramount, a few of which are owned and editorially managed by the same company, and at least one of which has former Paramount executives running its editorial department?

I did not recognize any of those 'Journalism links' but i only watched the trailer , looking for TrekMovie (whom i know is very much a shill site on ST's teet...)

You know, I can imagine the pitch meeting where the Paramount exec went to Stewart:

Faceless exec: So, Sir Stewart, that's the general outline of the new show with you front and center, and we are proposing a generous $400K per episode.  What do you say?

Stewart: Let me translate this for you, you guys are looking around at the TV landscape, Netflix is way ahead of the pack, Amazon Prime is offering tons of goodies beyond TV, Apple has pockets deeper than God, Disney is ringfencing their content, HBO is coming out with edgier and grittier,  and at best, you bozos have some old shows that are on TV that you're going to flip onto streaming, and you really need an anchor that make you stand apart from whatever Fox or NBC is offering, a big name for your new streaming service, does that sound about right to you?

Faceless exec: Well, we actually think...

Stewart: shut up, here is my deal, take it or leave it, I get creative input, if the writers do anything I don't like, I get veto power, I set the direction of the show, and I do whatever the f*** I like, got it?  Oh, and I have a list of people I want on the show.  Frakes, he can cameo, so can Spiner, and Sirtis... ah, I know I also want Jeri Ryan as a regular, she's still pretty hot, and is a good draw for nerds with fantasies.  And I want it in the contract to have at least four seasons.

Faceless exce talk it over with his colleagues for a minute:  Alright Sir. Stewart, we agree to your terms.  You have creative control, you have the crew you want, and $400K an episode...

Stewart laughs: who do you think I am?  Orlando Bloom?  $750K or I walk.

Faceless exec: but... but... Mr. Stewart, we don't have that kind of budget.

Stewart: sell your first born, loan your family out as sweat shop labor In Shenzhen, does it look like I give a sh**?  Do you want the deal or not.

    Faceless exec: ok...  you win.

The Faceless exec leaves, thankful for the deal that'll launch the new streaming service.  Meanwhile, Stewart cackles gleefully: at last, I will have the Star Trek I want.  The Star Trek the world deserves.

It's there already a dude who does Pitch Meetings (with the HUGE eyes in his thumbnails)?

Not unless you're really really bored.

As Star Trek novels go, the writing's actually not that bad.*  They're a long way from "great", but the main problem with both The Last Best Hope and The Dark Veil is that the writers (Una McCormack and James Swallow) spent most of their respective books frantically tying the story in knots in their efforts to introduce, explain, and justify the various pants-on-head idiotic parts of Star Trek: Picard's setting.

The ill-advised decision to not retcon the Kelvin Trek movies out of existence by incorporating the destruction of Romulus into PIC's storyline proved to be a huge mistake in the TV series, but the implications are way worse in the novels.  The only way the writers could justify the infamously cunning Romulan Star Empire being wiped out by the its homeworld's sun going supernova was for the entire Romulan government to be Too Dumb To Live on a level that makes even the dimmest Pakled would find deeply concerning.  The lemming-like determination the Romulan Senate, Tal Shiar, and Zhat Vash show in suppressing and dismissing any concerns about the impending destruction of Romulus by supernova is a truly bizarre thing to behold.  It's so nonsensical that you could be forgiven for wondering if the Romulans actually hate Picard for interrupting some kind of species-wide ritualistic mass suicide.  They know their world is doomed.  They know that it's going to be destroyed SOON.  But even though they're still on the planet that's about to be destroyed, they keep doing everything in their power to hinder their own efforts to evacuate.  The Tal Shiar spends its time abducting and torturing scientists to get them to retract their analyses of the timetable of their star's destruction, while the Zhat Vash launch a major operation to commit an act of war against the Federation and destroy the Starfleet rescue armada that an enormous percentage of their population are depending on for evacuation for the flimsiest possible reason.

In hindsight, it makes both Picard and the 2009 Kelvin Trek movie absolutely ridiculous.  In what way is anything Picard's fault?  The Romulans did absolutely everything they could to kill themselves en masse and succeeded spectacularly.  Nero's complaint now makes NO sense, given that the Federation DID send substantial aid to Romulus and only stopped because the Romulans sabotaged shipyard servicing the humanitarian fleet.

Personally, I suspect a TNG-era Picard would suspect PIC-era Picard was some kind of alien imposter or a terrible prank being played by Q.

    * Which is Damned by Faint Praise, at best.  Next to turds like Shatner's The Return**, almost any licensed novel would come away smelling of roses.
** A book that is already terrible for being Shatner's attempt to permanently settle the Kirk vs. Picard debate in his own favor, made worse by the realization that Shatner originally pitched it to Paramount as a Star Trek movie script after Generations.

Nemesis was in 2002. There was a sh*t ton of books dealing with post Nemesis events prior to JJT 2009. Did the books (the ones still going the main Post-Nem timeline) fill in the blanks after 2009's split of the timelines? Now PICy and STDs entries... pretty much trumps the books (and ignores them) and that's why the stories suck? Ultimately, was the reason the show runners of STDs and PICy did not plan their stories based on existing Book materials (or even STO) because in doing so, they might have to pay royalties to the books?

  15. When my wife taught me how to use the Roku in our room, i started watching, first, the Mando, then Lower Decks, then Book and now, Prodigy. I actually liked both anime Treks (I vaguely recall, my dismissiveness of the concepts but i blame my opinions of STD and Piccy), actually being shocked that i did enjoy those shows... I'm still loath on the idea of even watching STD, however. maybe, eventually i will but not now...
