  1. Not just the bridge window... I'd have to watch it again and really pay attention, but the port that dumped Kirk's pod, IIRC, was fairly large. Given the size of the pod in relation to Kirk a bit later, again, I'm not sure the 2500-3000' size is really working. It's like they made their Enterprise based off the original and refit Constitution we all know and love, then started blowing numbers for size and crew compliment out their @$$es after the fact.
  2. Seconded. This was one of the best movies I've seen in quite some time.
  3. Let's say probably not. While there's still a lot that's not understood about black holes, we do know that a black hole isn't actually a hole, but a singularity... that is, a point where all of the black hole's matter is condensed into a point that is so compacted it essentially has infinite density and zero volume. As an object approaches the black hole it would become stretched, eventually become one-dimensional (length, but no width or depth) before being crushed into the singularity. The thing is, a lot of what we know about black holes, especially with regards to what goes on on the other side of a black hole's event horizon, is basically educated guesses. Modern physics models are actually inadequate at describing something with infinite density and zero volume, leading to problems like the black hole information loss paradox and the black hole unitarity paradox. Finally, general relativity does allow that two interconnected black holes could warp space-time in such a way as to create a tunnel through the fabric of space time. However, such a theoretical idea seems unlikely, as there's no known process for creating such a connection. Still, the universe is turning out to be a much stranger place that we ever imagined, and if some of the theoretical branches of physics out there turn out to be correct, who knows?
  4. Sorta. That was the gist of it from a novel, but the novel isn't considered canon. I'm reading the same stuff, from a magazine article and the movie's website, and even the Memory Alpha wiki is listing it as 757 meters. I don't see where they came up with that number... not only did the ship not look that big compared to the window on the bridge, but it didn't seem that big in the shipyard on Earth. Personally, I'm going to assume it's no larger than the Enterprise-A, until I hear differently from whoever's actually in charge of the franchise these days.
  5. 82"? I don't want to even contemplate how much that's gonna run... I can't even get my wife on board with $2000 to replace the 52" 1080i Toshiba DLP with a 52" 1080p 120Htz Samsung LCD.
  6. Finally, someone who agrees with me! Honestly, I think X3 gets a lot of flak because it was so mediocre after the first two were so awesome. Mediocre though it was, I didn't find it offensive the way I did Wolverine. Killing Cyke bothers me less than shitting on Deadpool.
  7. No, see, with stuff like the Hamsters, it's camp to begin with. If they made a movie and it sucked, you'd nod sagely, reminding others that you knew it would all along. And if it's good, then you'd be pleasantly surprised. So I actually am going to nominate for any Comic Book Movie I Do Not Want to See anything starring one of DC's mainline characters that isn't Batman. Because every time they do we go to see it, hoping for the best and receiving the worst.
  8. I don't think you'll need a $90 universal remote. I'm guessing that newer $20 remotes will work. That said, I spent $200 on mine. If you've got a lot of stuff in your home theater, Harmony remotes are highly recommended. I'm actually on my second. I had the Harmony for Xbox 360, and I sold it to upgrade to the Harmony One.
  9. You guys know we're talking about the third X-Men movie, right? I can definitely live without a digital copy or a better transfer. Hell, I could probably live without the movie at all...
  10. Yeah, I saw that... but I already have the first release of third film. Buying the other two separately for $20 each is still $10 more than I want to pay, anyway. As much as I love the Star Trek TV show, I'm not planning on doing any Trek, save the new one if it turns out to be any good. The movies aren't really the high point for Trek, and In general I don't bother with TV on Blu-ray (Firefly and The Sarah Connor Chronicles being the only two exceptions so far). As for LotR films, I might be the only person on the boards that actually can't stand them. But for the most part, I agree, I'm not really in a rush to upgrade my current DVDs to Blu-rays. Most of my Blu-rays are movies that were released on video after the format came out.
  11. I don't really know... for me, it's not so much a question of which movies do I want to upgrade as at what price will a movie convince me to upgrade. The X-Men films are a good example. I can't find them for under $25 locally. I do want to upgrade them, but I'll wait until I can find them for around $15, even if that means buying used.
  12. That's not always a bad thing. I really enjoyed WildC.A.T.s until Alan Moore crapped all over it. Backlash was another favorite of mine.
  13. I'm down with a Deadpool movie... as long as it's a wisecracking Deadpool who carries his swords in sheaths on his back, not in his forearms, doesn't teleport (without assistance from Cable, anyway), and definitely doesn't shoot optic blasts.
  14. Seconded. I never cared for the whole samurai past thing... the whole honorable swordsman thing never really jived with the angry animal that'd just as soon gut you as drink with you.
  15. How is it that there's still movies like Star Wars and the original Indiana Jones trilogy that I'm waiting for on Blu-ray, but stuff like the Terminator films are already on their second Blu-ray release? EDIT: Am I missing something? I looked at the releases through the end of summer, and nothing's really jumping out at me. Sure, there's some interesting titles, but nothing that'll prompt me to upgrade from DVD at new Blu-ray prices, save maybe Ghostbusters.
  16. Something about Neil Gaiman creating some of the popular characters like Angela in an issue he was hired to write, and after years of paying Gaiman royalties, McFarlane decided that he was the sole owner of those characters. Gaiman sued, McFarlane lost, appealed, and lost again. The bigger question is... do people actually still read Spawn? Despite the gore and religious themes Marvel or DC wouldn't have touched with a 10 foot pole at the time, Spawn struck me as a bit juvenile, even back in high school. Sad thing was, I did actually admire what Image was doing when they first started, even if WildC.A.T.s and Cyberforce were X-Men... "inspired." Things started going downhill when Wildstorm started doing the crossovers (Wildstorm Rising, Fire From Heaven, etc). When Top Cow split from Image and Jim Lee sold Wildstorm to DC, I gave up on Image entirely. I'm pretty much all Marvel and IDW now.
  17. You didn't stay in the theater long enough. Basically, for me, the credits started. Then I saw the thing you saw with the military picking up Stryker. Then the rest of the credits. Then, and only then, did I see the bit with Deadpool. Anyway, the movie was okay. Terrible special effects, utterly bizarre treatment of Deadpool, and characters I don't recall being in Weapon X instead of characters that I do... but at least the fight scenes were okay. Played the demo of the game on Xbox Live, BTW... seems pretty solid.
  18. Downloaded the demo, got my ass beat by the CPU. Downloaded the demo for the Wolverine game, too... that's pretty good. I might have to pick that one up.
  19. The only CRT I could find is 17". I'd really suggest going with the LCD, though. I had a friend who, like you, noticed the superior quality of CRTs back in the days before 16:9 monitors were common. They've improved a lot, though, and even my friend is starting to come around after seeing my new monitor (a 22" Samsung). And in my case, what finally put me over the edge was games... some new ones, like F.E.A.R. 2, don't actually support 4:3 resolutions. If you used one, it's like watching a DVD on a 4:3 TV, with the black bands at the top and bottom. It was just too small to see clearly, so I upgraded. I don't mind playing games that don't support widescreen resolutions... I set the video card to display them with black bars on the sides, but I picked a monitor with more vertical lines natively than my old monitor.
  20. AFAIK, you could just download the firmware updates on your PC, then transfer it to the unit via a flash drive or USB hard drive. You don't need to format your drives in in FAT32. I'm pretty sure I read that the unit can read from drives formatted in NTFS, or HFS+ for Mac users.
  21. Kinda. Short of building a home theater PC, it seems like every device is missing some codecs. But you might want to give this a try. The downside is a few missing codecs, missing audio on some files on the reviewer's unit, a little lag loading files, and the fact that you have to have a separate USB flash drive or hard drive to put the files on, but the upside is up to 1080p video over HDMI, plus support for MPEG-1/2/4, WMV9, AVI (mp4, Xvid, AVC), h.264, MKV, and MOV (mp4 and h.264). Retails for around $100, as far as I know. Seagate and IOMEGA make similar devices. Some of theirs come with storage too, but they don't seem to support as many codecs.
  22. Okay, yeah, that would be pretty tough. The Psyco Gundam was the hardest enemy I've fought so far, and that was probably mission 6 for Char. Reviews for Dynasty Warriors games are always pretty bad. Hasn't stopped me from picking up both DWG games (although I sold the first one after I finsihed Original Mode with everyone), Samurai Warriors 2, Warriors Orochi 2, and Dynasty Warriors 6. Mindless hack and slash is fun sometimes, and Gundam is honestly a good fit for it. Doesn't hurt that I'm a Gundam fan, but I do wish they'd dump the Mission Mode for more Official stories.
  23. Harder? I remember running around the fields looking for health a couple times in the first one, but so far DWG2 has been cake for me. How much have you played? I've just finished Official Mode with Char and Amuro. I'm thinking about trying Mission Mode later today.
  24. I'd love another Z.O.E. I just hope this time it's not something I finish in one two-and-a-half-hour sitting. Much as I loved Z.O.E. 2, I was really pissed when I finished it in a little over half the time it took to finish the first one, especially hearing Kojima talk about how it'd be double the length.
