The computer and electronics super geek thread
mikeszekely replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Serious question, where are those negatives coming from? People who don't like the Office 365 sub model? I was lucky to have a friend at Microsoft when I was in grad school who hooked me up with 1-PC license keys Office 2013 Professional, Visio 2013, and Project 2013, and I happen to think Office 2013 is better than Office 2010 (which itself was better than Office 2007). Anyways, JB0 really has it covered, but the short answer is LibreOffice. I'll point out, though, that both LibreOffice and Microsoft Office can still handle old Office 2003 .doc files. It's just that neither uses them as the default. -
I'm voting for the Mk-II. And if you're going to build a 00, go for the RG.

Even better, it's like the love child of F91 and Hi-Nu. I mean, Freedom's wings are F91's guns mounted on Hi-Nu's wings (less the fact the whole detaching funnels part). Oh, and replace Hi-Nu's propellant tanks with more guns.

Well, Freedom (largely due to the guns on its wings) reminds me of a bigger, wing-ier F91, another design I like. Strike (and to a degree, Impulse) is a design that I liked on paper. A simple design that can equip different packs for different missions? I mean, that seems like a good idea. But we quickly run into two problems. 1. The packs basically boil down to mobility, melee, or ranged. I mean, that might make sense in a video game, but I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense militarily. Which is probably why they went with the Aile Striker pack most of the time. 2. You wonder why they don't just slap the big boosters, big sword, and big gun on one pack. Which, outside of the anime, they do with the Perfect Striker (or Destiny Silhouette, or the whole friggin' Destiny Gundam). So... yeah.

A million times this! I think it's no secret that I'm not a huge fan of SEED, but Freedom's probably my favorite non-UC mobile suit. I even dig the big rail guns on the hips, which sorta remind me of the kamas some of the clone trooper commanders wore in Star Wars, and dislike how Strike Freedom shrunk them down.

I think I'm a minority, but I actually like Freedom better than Strike Freedom.

The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread
mikeszekely replied to slaginpit's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Toyworld's Long Haul and Mixmaster are more like the G1 designs, but the other four look like the Hasbro versions with the improvements that naturally come from each Constructicon costing almost as much as Hasbro's entire set. I mean, it's nice, don't get me wrong. And if you have the $500-$600 to spend, go for it, for sure. I just still think the Hasbro one is pretty good for $150. That said, I'm probably going to buy Dr. Wu's Mixmaster replacement.- 9275 replies

Transformers Animated - Your Thoughts
mikeszekely replied to Galaxy_Stranger's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
This is true. Yeah, it's kind of funny how all of us who grew up on G1 remember Optimus, perhaps mostly from the animated movie, as a heroic paragon of virtue, while overlooking how often he was a dick in the show. -

I don't know how many of you have Gabriel Bros stores (and of those of you that do, how many are still collecting CHUGs), but I was browsing while my in-laws shopped for shoes and found a whole bunch of fairly recent Generations figures at $7.99 for Deluxes and $9.99 for Voyagers. I picked up a Jhiaxus (whom I'd never actually seen at TRU or Target), but they also had Crosscut and Tankor in the Deluxes and Roadbuster, Skybite, Rhinox, and Whirl in the Voyagers. Sadly no Brainstorm, Windblade, or Arcee, at least not at my location.- 17162 replies

Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
mikeszekely replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I think that F91 is a slog to sit through, especially the first half. The film's saving grace may be that the Gundam F91 is a pretty slick design, much better than Victory or V2. But heck yes do we need an animated Crossbone. Heck, I'd like to see a full 50-episode run, split into two seasons ala 00. Do Crossbone for the first season, and Steel 7 for season 2.- 3815 replies

Transformers Animated - Your Thoughts

I loved the show. But, while I agree that Wyatt's designs were perfect for the show, I didn't care for the toys. -

No, Bumblejumper was the yellow Cliffjumper with a different head. He wound up a canonical character named Bumper. Not to be confused with Hubcap, a deliberate yellow repaint of Cliffjumper that would come later, or the yellow Cliffjumper that was actually Cliffjumper, just molded in yellow.- 17162 replies

Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
mikeszekely replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yeah, until the next one. I mean, the grand finale was supposed to be CCA... they even killed Amuro and Char! But the conflict between the Federation and Zeon remains extremely popular with fans in a way that, say, the League Militaire vs Zanscare or some other Earth-based faction vs some other colony-based faction never seems to be. So in a few years, after a few flashy shows that rehash the same old themes and don't really bring anything new besides more model kits we'll probably get an OVA set in UC 0105 about some other Zeon remnant's plan to strike a blow for Spacenoids against a lazy and corrupt Federation.- 3815 replies

Hey, as long as this thread is floating near the top, I might as well mention that the Mega Man Legacy Collection is available now. EDIT: Nevermind. I mean, yeah, it is available. But it feels sort of off, and I say this as someone who's played the NES versions probably hundreds of times, played the NES ROMs on emulators for Windows, Mac, Android, PSP, and Dreamcast, the PS2 Anniversary Collection, Virtual Console versions on the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS, and the PlayStation Store Japanese PSone versions on the PS3. It's hard to say exactly how they're off, but I'm making a lot of mistakes and generally finding it more difficult than normal. For games that require precise timing and muscle reflexes, that's hard to get past. Even if it were spot on, well, it's sort of bare bones. You can try some challenges, and you can read character and enemy profiles/view some art, but it's basically the six NES Mega Man games with none of the extras like Navi mode or the remixed music from the Anniversary Collection (or, for that matter, MM7-8 or the arcade games). I mean, maybe get it on sale if you really want to play it on whatever platform without resorting to emulators, but I'll probably stick to other versions.

At least they're not trying to pass it off as Cliffjumper... although I could see Hasbro releasing another TRU-exclusive and calling it Cliffjumper if VW would ever let Transformers license their cars in the US.- 17162 replies

How will we deal with our collections?
mikeszekely replied to Tochiro's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
My daughter gets everything, unless she doesn't want it. Maybe some of my more valuable Transformers get sold. Assuming my daughter doesn't want my stuff, my books will get donated somewhere, my Transformers could go to my brother's kids, or maybe someday grandkids. My models will probably end up in the trash. -
Or if that fails, metallic sharpies. I'll see if I have any, since I built the R8-72-2 and two P-Bandai versions of the same kit. There's even a small chance I might be up your way, too, since my grandpap is selling his cottage across the street from Pymatuning State Park in Linesville, and he's giving away the tools he had in the garage but I'd have to pick them up myself.
