It's been noted that "Phoenix" is the pet name. Now, depending on how you look at it, pet names are nicknames. Just like "Messiah" is the pet name for the VF-25. Now they are canon, but whether or not you use quotation marks (i.e. VF-0 "Phoenix" or VF-25 "Messiah") or not (i.e. VF-5000 Star Mirage) really depends on how you want to interpret that. Either one is fine.

It might give some ideas on what to do.

I don't recall that. It's been said that the VF-25 features a efficient transforming design, but that was mentioned back in the VF-25 Naming Contest. I'm not sure how canon you want to take that since I have yet to see that mentioned outside the Naming Contest.
