Starchild
Sorry if this is a "newbie" question. What does the "Y" stand for? I know that the "V" in VF stands for variable, but I can't figure out what the "Y" is... Also is it VF-19 or YF-19, I have seen it both ways... Thanks for the info guys, Star
azrael
Yes this is a newbie question. They belong here and I suggest you post here next time: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?...ct=ST&f=2&t=140 To answer your question, the "Y" designates the fighter as a prototype. Much like the YF-22 and YF-23 of our time. Come on mod, lock this thread.

Druna Skass
Why did they use Y to designate a prototype?
David Hingtgen
Because they just do, that's why. It's the government, don't expect any sense at all. Fits in nicely with X being eXperimental, but prefixes and main designators are separate (you could have a YX-19 if you really wanted to) Edited December 28, 2003 by David Hingtgen
Beltane70
Some past planes with the YF designation are the YF-17, which we know today as the F/A-18 and the YF-12A which went on to become the SR-71.
Legioss
YF stands for You're F*****.
