On this week's episode of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

ep44screen01.jpg

Episode 44: "A Lovely Christmas Eve" (素敵な聖夜)

Legend of the Week: Kenji Ohba (Uchuu Keiji Gavan, Daigoro/Denji Blue in Denshi Sentai Denjiman) as Shiro Akebono

Villain of the Week: Imperial Guard Bibabu

Gokai Color of the Week: Yellow

Past Super Sentai of the Week: Battle Fever J (too '70s for Power Rangers fans) and Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (Mighty Morphin' Alien Rangers)

Gai introduces the Gokaigers to Christmas, but while Luka learns more about the holiday, Imperial Guard Bibabu uses his wand to turn people and Gai into dolls. The Gokaigers must once again go into battle to turn Gai and everyone back to normal and save Christmas.

ep44screen02.jpg

What a fun episode! Luka-chan gets hotter every week and we get to see the Gokaigers go all-yellow for a change. And to compensate for the five main members changing into Battle Fever J, Gokai Silver combines the Gokai Red and Gokai Green Ranger Keys to form Gokai Christmas. Last, but not least, Shiro Akebono - the former Battle Kenya - appears throughout the episode dressed as Santa Claus before he secretly grants the Gokaigers the greater power of Battle Fever J.

On this week's episode of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

ep45screen.jpg

Episode 45: "A Confused Ninja" (慌てん坊忍者)

Legends of the Week: Kazuki Yao (Judau in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Smith in Gunbuster) as Ninjaman (voice) and Satomi Hirose  as Tsuruhime

Villain of the Week: None

Gokai Color of the Week: Blue

Past Super Sentai of the Week: None

After remembering a clue left by Domon in the Timeranger tribute episode, the Gokaigers return to Negakure Temple and free Ninjaman from the jar he was encased in for the past few years. As he was not part of the Legendary War, Ninjaman is briefed on the events from the war to the Gokaigers' quest on Earth to search for the Greatest Treasure in the Universe. However, he refuses to hand over the greater power of the Kakurangers to the crew.

The much-anticipated Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (Mighty Morphin' Alien Rangers) tribute has begun; unfortunately, it's nothing but a mere series recap. Not a good way to start the year. Hopefully, things pick up on part 2 next week.

Next week on Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

Episode 46: "Hero Eligibility" (ヒーロー合格)

The Gokaigers must now prove themselves to Ninjaman to be worth of the greater power of the Kakurangers.

Gokai Blue and Gokai Green are the second and third Gokaiger figures, respectively, in Bandai's S.H. Figuarts line. As with Gokai Red, both Gokai Blue and Gokai Green feature the same amount of detail and articulation, with glossy helmets and bodies in a matte finish. Strangely enough, the gold accents on Gokai Blue are not as bright as those on the other Gokaigers.

Alongside the standard accessories of extra hands, a Mobirates phone, two Ranger Keys, a Gokai Gun and a Gokai Sabre, each figure comes with their gimmick parts set. Gokai Blue has two unique Gokai Sabres: one double-bladed and the other triple-bladed. This allows collectors to replicate the scene in episode 4 where he borrowed all of his shipmates' Gokai Sabres to execute the Final Wave Five Blade Style Blue Slash. Unlike the regular Gokai Sabre, the Gokai Cylinders on these units are easier to remove. Gokai Green comes with Navi, the Gokaigers' robot parrot navigator. He has articulation on the head and wings, though the ball joints on the wings are very loose.

And just like Gokai Red, pre-orders of Gokai Blue and Gokai Green come with their respective Gokai Darin units. These are ship's wheels with seats that are colored to match the corresponding Gokaiger. Both figures fit perfectly on their seats and controls, and the wheels allow closed Ranger Keys to be inserted in the center.

As usual, Bandai has delivered yet another excellent pair of action figures for this series. Now to wait for Gokai Yellow, Gokai Pink and Gokai Silver to complete the set.

Saban has not yet made any confirmation on adapting Gokaiger into the Power Rangers' 20th anniversary title, but according to Hyper Hobby magazine, Toei is already working on it. The Legend War is being re-shot minus the teams before Zyuranger (Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers); it is unknown, however, if Dairanger will be omitted as well, as Kiba Ranger (White Ranger) was the only suit used in season 2 of MMPR. There's also the issue of people who became different Rangers through the years. Tommy Oliver (played by Jason David Frank) alone has been five different Rangers (Green Ranger in MMPR1, White Ranger in MMPR2 & 3, Zeo Ranger V in Zeo, Red Turbo Ranger in Turbo and Black Dino Ranger in Dino Thunder).

The other remaining issue is the fate of Tensou Sentai Goseiger. Whether or not the series will be adapted is still in the air.

Episode 46: "Hero Eligibility" (ヒーロー合格)

Legend of the Week: Kazuki Yao (Dark Schneider in Bastard!!, Iketani in Initial D) as Ninjaman (voice)

Villain of the Week: Action Commander Juju

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Super Sentai of the Week: Ninja Sentai Kakuranger (Mighty Morphin' Alien Rangers) and Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan (too '80s for Power Rangers fans)

A week has passed since Ninjaman moved into the Gokai Galleon to see if the Gokaigers are worthy of the Kakurangers' greater power, but no progress has been made among the crew members. But as the Gokaigers continue their quest, Action Commander Juju casts a spell on Doc, Gai and a few bystanders, sending their hatred out of control.

ep46screen02.jpg

Well, it's about time things started picking up, after a mediocre recap episode. Those aching for some ninjutsu action will be pleased by the Gokaigers using the Kakuranger suits and Ninjaman becoming a giant as the Kakurangers' greater power. It's just too bad that Tsuruhime's guest appearance was only for the last minute of last week's episode.

And on that bombshell, the legend tributes come to a close. Now for the next step, which is to retrieve the last five greater powers from Basco.

The fourth Gokaiger in Bandai's S.H. Figuarts line, Gokai Yellow is a Tamashii Web exclusive - mainly because female tokusatsu figures are still untested waters for Bandai. Unlike the male counterparts, Gokai Yellow comes in a bigger box, which includes her Gokai Darin unit (the male characters only have theirs through pre-orders).

Just like the other Gokaigers, the figure comes with extra hands, a Mobirates phone, two Ranger Keys, a Gokai Gun, a Gokai Sabre and a set of gimmick parts. Gokai Yellow's gimmick parts consist of two different Gokai Sabres. One is a naginata formed out of two units, which she uses in a few episodes. The other is connected to a bendable wire to replicate the unorthodox sword-throwing style she displays in every episode. Unfortunately, you only get one of those; Gokai Pink will supposedly come with another corded unit to complete the effect. Because the default skirt may limit leg poseability, the figure comes with a three-piece skirt for more extreme poses. Swapping the parts only requires separating the upper and lower torso parts from the waist; just don't lose the belt.

As a Tamashii Web exclusive, this figure is actually a little disappointing. The hands do not grip the swords very well compared to the male figures. This becomes more frustrating with the corded Gokai Sabre, as the wire will support the sword in only a few angles; any other pose requires support from a Tamashii Stage display stand. The three-piece skirt somewhat works, but looks awkward overall; plus, the skirt parts are required for the figure to sit on the Gokai Darin seat. What probably kills this figure in the end is its price. It costs almost the same as two standard S.H. Figuarts figures.

So unless you're a completely hardcore Gokaiger or Mao Ichimichi fan like myself and must complete the lineup, don't bother with this figure. Otherwise, if you don't mind the price, pick up Gokai Yellow.

On this week's episode of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

Episode 47: "The Results of Treason" (裏切りの果て)

Legend of the Week: Tohru Furuya (Mamoru/Tuxedo Kamen in Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon, Pegasus Seiya in Saint Seiya) as Aka Red (voice)

Villain of the Week: Basco ta Jolokia

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Super Sentai of the Week: Gosei Sentai Dairanger (season 2 of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers), Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger (Power Rangers Ninja Storm) and Seijuu Sentai Gingaman (Power Rangers Lost Galaxy)

As the Gokaigers begin their final confrontation with Basco ta Jolokia to claim all of the Super Sentai greater powers, the privateer betrays his own pet Sally - leaving the space pirates no choice but to bring her aboard the Gokai Galleon and tend to her wounds. In reality, this is yet another scheme by Basco to steal the Ranger Keys from the Gokaigers, but Sally suddenly becomes indecisive over who to trust: her master or those who helped her.

Basco has officially become the most despicable villain in Super Sentai history, as he blows up his own pet to put Captain Marvelous out of commission and take everything away from the Gokaigers. And even while using the full potential of three Super Sentai powers, the Gokaigers are still no match for the privateer. Now that Basco has claimed the Gokai Galleon, Navi and all of the Ranger Keys, how will this end for the space pirates?

Next week on Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

With their powers taken away from them, the Gokaigers must face all odds to reclaim everything they've worked hard for from Basco.

Basco now has possession of the Gokai Galleon, Navi and all 35 Super Sentai greater powers. But the now-powerless Gokaigers prove that they're not going down without a fight.

What a fitting climax to one of the greatest feuds in tokusatsu history. These guys really know how to put on a show with amazing fight choreography for the Gokai Red vs. Basco deathmatch. And with Basco finally meeting his fate, it will be interesting to see how this show will come to a close within the next two or so episodes.

Villain of the Week: Development Technical Officer Insarn

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Super Sentai of the Week: Mahou Sentai Magiranger (Power Rangers Mystic Force)

With Basco's defeat, the Gokaigers now have all 34 past Super Sentai greater powers and access to the Greatest Treasure in the Universe, which has the ability to change the universe in any way they wish. However, they are warned by the treasure itself that all of the Super Sentai powers will vanish forever once it is used. Meanwhile, Akudos Gil sends Insarn to get rid of the space pirates before the Zangyack Empire can proceed on their conquest of Earth.

Well, the Greatest Treasure in the Universe is not what we had expected, as it's a talking Triforce. So yeah, in appearance, it's a bit of a disappointment, but how it will play out in the end is still worth the wait. And while we're treated to some old-school Super Sentai action, it's just too bad that Insarn jobbed to the Gokaigers like that.

S.H. Figuarts Gokai Silver (ゴーカイシルバー)
Bandai, 2012
Made in China

Contents
Gokai Silver figure
Extra hands (x 11)
Henshin Cell Phone Gokai Cellular
Gokai Silver Ranger Key (open)
Gokai Spear
Gokai Spear Gun Mode

Gokai Silver is the fifth Gokaiger in Bandai's S.H. Figuarts line and the fourth to be sold on a retail level in Japan. Unlike the other Gokaigers, Gokai Silver's body is in a metallic finish and the wrist collar and boot lip parts have no articulation. The figure is also very minimal on accessories as well. Aside from the extra hands, Gokai Silver comes with his Gokai Cellular phone, one Ranger Key and two Gokai Spears - one in spear mode and the other in gun mode. While the weapons are very well detailed, they lack the key holes to insert folded Ranger Keys (especially since Gokai Silver doesn't come with one); thus any Final Wave pose you do with the figure will lose one point in accuracy.

Even pre-orders don't get any benefits such as the Gokai Darin that came with Gokai Red, Gokai Blue and Gokai Green. What's more disappointing is that the Gold Mode armor is not included. Perhaps it will be available as a separate release. At least the Gokai Spear has the ability to change into Anchor Mode, so there is hope for a Gold Mode anytime soon.

Overall, Gokai Silver is the most lacking among the Gokaigers in terms of features, but if you love the character, then the figure is a must-have.

Episode 50: "The Day of the Deciding Battle" (決戦の日)

Legends of the Week: Seiju Umon as Goushi, Louis Yamada LIII as Prof. Shuichiro Amachi, and Kaoru Hirata  as Yuka Yamazaki

Villain of the Week: Imperial Guard Dyrandoh

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Super Sentai of the Week: None

The Gokaigers are overwhelmed by the sheer might of the Zangyack Empire's invasion fleet as all of the Gokai Machines are destroyed in battle. As Emperor Akudos Gill broadcasts an ultimatum for mankind's extinction come sunrise, the pirates must decide on whether to use the Greatest Treasure in the Universe to wipe out the Zangyack Empire once and for all, at the cost of all of the Super Sentai powers.

What an explosive way to start the final battle, with the Gokaigers going all-out on unleashing just about every Super Sentai greater power on the first wave of the invasion fleet. In addition, we see the return appearances of Goushi (formerly Mammoth Ranger) of Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger, Prof. Amachi of Tensou Sentai Goseiger and Yuka Yamazaki of Mahou Sentai Magiranger. In addition, guest characters from previous episodes of Gokaiger appear as well - namely the mother and her children from episode 23 and the school kid from episode 2.

ep50screen02.jpg

But what will really have Power Rangers fans mark out is Gokai Red as Tyranno Ranger in Dragon Armor. It's just too bad the rest of the Gokaigers didn't change into the full Zyuranger team, though. Still, this episode is a great warmup to a much-anticipated finale.

Next week on Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

Last few episodes have been really good.

I was worried they'd feel like a bit of an anticlimax after the run of great episodes dealing with everyone's personal conflicts that culminated in the defeat of Basco, but they've really ramped it up in terms of the action first with the five-in-one tribute battle and then the use of a bunch of ultimate powers in the recent mech vs fleet battle.

And now, the finale...

ep51screen.jpg
Final Episode: "Sayonara Space Pirates" (さよなら宇宙海賊)
Final Legends: Naoya Makoto as Tsuyoshi Kaijo, Takayuki Godai as Takayuki Hiba, Ryo Narushima as Remi Hoshikawa, Seiju Umon as Goushi, Ei Hamura as Shoji, Keisuke Tsuchiya as Kazu, Atsushi Harada as Sho Tatsumi, Ayumi Beppu  as Houka Ozu, and Yumi Sugimoto  as Miu Suto
Final Villains: Emperor Akudos Gill and Imperial Guard Dyrandoh

It's the Gokaigers' last stand against the might of the Zangyack Empire, as they decide to prove themselves to be the 35th Super Sentai.

"You can whine about it to your kid when you're dead." - Gokai Red

This episode will go down as one of the greatest endings in tokusatsu history, with the Gokaigers going all-out to put on a show. The final showdown between the Gokaigers and Akudos Gill is nothing but pure awesomeness, with the Gokaigers using different combinations of Super Sentai attacks - including the super modes of later teams. Even more notable is Gai's importance in the series as not only a space pirate, but the sole Earth representative of the team. No longer is the sixth member considered a spare tire anymore; he's practically part of the team's backbone alongside Captain Marvelous. And that is how to put on a show in Super Sentai.

Seeing the outcome of this series will have people wondering how Toei will ever top it. Will Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters be able to fill in the shoes of Gokaiger? Only time will tell...

Gokai Pink is the final release of the core lineup of the Gokaigers in Bandai's S.H. Figuarts line. Like Gokai Yellow, she is a Tamashii Web exclusive, as female characters are still untested waters in this toy line. And being in the same format as Gokai Yellow, Gokai Pink comes packaged in a bigger box with her Gokai Darin unit.

Content-wise, Gokai Pink has the same amount of parts as Gokai Yellow. Her main gimmick part is the Double Gokai Gun, which is two guns fused into one. It's a nifty gadget, even though it was only used once in the series. Also included is a Gokai Sabre with Cord, which completes Gokai Yellow's arsenal. Too bad that's about all that's included in the package. Maybe on some later web exclusive release, we'll get the Gokai Galleon Buster.

Just like Gokai Yellow, Gokai Pink has some quality control issues due to the low production volume. Some joints are significantly tighter and the right wrist cuff is glued while the left cuff moves freely as it should. Hopefully, Gokai Pink's build quality is not inherently catastrophic like Shinken Pink was.

In short, the steep price does not justify the quality of the figure. You are paying merely to be a hardcore fan of Gokaiger or Yui Koike. But then again, if you did get the other Gokaigers, you have no choice but to add Gokai Pink to complete your collection.

Having watched two Gokaiger movies with pirated robots is fun.

1331261745873.jpg

Gokaiger Ghost Ship is 31 minutes of enjoyment. The fight scene between Gokaioh and Nise (Fake) Gokaioh was obviously CGI but the pirate battle on a giant ship is something we wouldn't have in the series.

1331300926300.jpg

While Gokaiger itself is a crossover series of Super Sentai crossing over with Gavan expands and world build further their universe. For those who have seen episode 51 finale of Gokaiger the cameo of both Doggie Kruger and Signalman reference to the fact they are both Space Police in Super Sentai. Dekaranger being a homage to the Space Sheriff series with their suits teleported from their base. Space Sheriffs receive their combat suites from their fortress ships.

Gokaiger vs Gavan introduces Gavan as the greatest Space Sheriff of the Space Police (Uchuu Keisatsu). You are probably wondering why he is a Space Police when in the original trilogy the organization was known as Galactic Union Police (Ginga Renpo Keisatsu). It implies the GUP in the aftermath of Shaider expanded beyond the Milky Way and became known as Space Police. SPD (Special Police Dekaranger) and Signalman Police Kobaan of Planet Police being part of this expanded organization in Gokaiger's continuity.

In the Dekaranger tribute Marvelous knows about the Space Police. Of course being an alien he should but his flashback reveals why. Marvelous was kid stowaway in Space Police cruiser (SPD cruiser) that was saved by Gavan when Zangyack attacked the ship he was on. When Gavan goes to arrest the five Gokaiger Ahim protest that the Dekaranger found them innocent as such the Space Police shouldn't be after them. Gavan arrest them and brings them to a stadium where the Space Police Director General Weeval was waiting. (Interesting about his uniform he wears a GUP symbol and an SPD commander buckle) When it became to fishy that the Space Police was working to gain the Zangyack bounty on the Gokaigers Gavan released them and turned on Weeval. Turns out Weeval was Ashrada, a Zangyack spy within the Space Police. Ashrada looks like a mix of Don Horror and Hunter Killer in Gavan. Ashrada is a blood relative of Don Horror. Ashrada reveal the robotic Gavan Bootleg which was created using Space Police and Zangyack technologies. He is programmed with Gavan's fighting style.

In any case... Gokaiger escape. Gavan is captured. Marv and company go and save Gavan who is trapped in a Zangyack prison in Makuu Space using the great powers of Battle Fever and Denziman after meeting Gavan's look alikes Battle Kenya and Denzi Blue. They release the Sentai ex-villains along the way. Meanwhile Basco try to grab the Gokai Galleon while the cat is away but stopped by the Go-Busters in a stalemate fight. Gavan is rescued and after realizing who Marv was teams up with the Gokaiger to fight Ashrada and Gavan Bootleg. Gavan finishes off Gavan Bootleg while the Gokaiger defeats Ashrada.. .. Ashrada grows giant plunging the Earth in Makuu space. Gokaiger in Gozyu Gokaioh and Gavan with Dol battle Ashrada. Out of nowhere a portal opens with Machfalcon joining the battle combining with Gozyu Gokaioh into Kanzen Gokaioh. In Makuu Space it turns out Machfalcon won't turn into an Engine cast. Marvelous and Gavan with their mecha attack with a Gavan Dynamic Final Wave combo attack finishing off Ashrada. Later Gavan and Gokaiger meet Battle Kenya and Denzi Blue. Don and Joe give back their keys to them for a one time tripple Kenji Ohba transformation. Which is pretty much like the Space Sheriff Special.

Episode 1: "Super Megaforce"
Just minutes after the Megaforce Power Rangers defeat the Warstar forces, the Armada suddenly appears and launches an all-out invasion of Earth. In the midst of the chaos, Gosei grants the Rangers a new upgrade that allows them to harness the powers of the past Power Rangers.

Lowdown
Well, Saban wasted no time in presenting the first episode of Power Rangers Super Megaforce. Any form of character development or explanation of the Rangers' new powers is thrown out the door (not that it matters in the Power Rangers universe, anyway). Instead, the premier episode just cuts to the action with footage from the first two episodes of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger mixed with really bad dialogue.

And the upgrades? Well, in order for the Rangers to become swashbuckling pirates with phones, they have to be in the Goseiger suits first. Because of this, the Gokai changes that involve Goseigers are heavily tampered with to avoid redundancy. For example, in the scene where the Gokaigers change into all Super Sentai Reds, Gokai Green's change into Gosei Red is shoddily replaced by Bouken Red. Also, the Gokai change to Himitsu Sentai Goranger is deleted, as most Power Rangers fans wouldn't know any of the pre-Zyuranger teams.

For the average Power Rangers fan, Super Megaforce will definitely have them pumped up with more spandex-clad fights and giant robots. Otherwise, it's proof once again to stick to the source material.

"Now that's a Super Mega Fail."

As the city recovers from the Armada's invasion, Prince Vekar sends down a new monster to destroy cities with underground missiles. Troy gets wind of this evil plot, but is caught in a battle with the monster and scores of X Borgs while his teammates rush to assist him.

Instead of going the regular Gokaiger route and introducing the Magirangers' grand power, this series fast-forwards to the Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger tribute episode. Again, only most of the action footage is retained from the source material. Doggie Kruger does not make an appearance here, unfortunately.

Gosei: "Rangers, you've now unlocked new modes that have never been seen on this planet."

And this is how the Dairanger suits come to play in this series: as an unlockable power. They don't mention the official PR name here. Furthermore, the SPD powers are unlocked by Gosei, which completely defeats the point of the series by not having a past member appear and "pass the torch" to the Rangers. And goddamn, the sound effects suck balls in this show.

Oh yeah - I realized something: In the scene where the Rangers engage the Gokaioh/Legendary Megazord's final attack, the "Let's Go!" sign is omitted. Screw you, Saban!

As much as I love Gokaiger, I'm not sure if I should continue watching this mess.

If they used the dairanger suits I wonder why they didn't use the goranger suits? Probably thought they looked too silly.

From the perspective of the Power Rangers franchise, it wouldn't make sense using the Goranger or any of the pre-spandex (1975-1982) suits. But I'd like to see them use the Bioman suits as an homage to Saban's first attempt at adapting Super Sentai.

Saban has a knack for taking cool exciting scenes from Sentai and somehow make them boring and mundane. Ever time I watch a pr adaption I look forward to seeing certain scenes only to be disappointed. It's amazing how music and dialogue can totally alter a scene even though it's the same video footage ( although usually with bad cuts).

After seeing two episodes I have to say I really don't get the purpose of keeping the gosei suits. They now have an unnecessary extra transformation. Like why bother filming an extra henshin scene with the gosei suits?

You should know by now that with Saban, nothing makes sense. I knew they would screw up Gokaiger, but I couldn't imagine just how much damage they would do by not hiring an entirely new cast. Just one of the examples of Saban being cheap.

Today's episode is supposed to be based on Gokaiger episode 4, where Gokai Blue did his five-sword technique. Let's see how Saban botches this.

EDIT: Looks like they've attempted a faithful recreation, with the usually bad dialogue thrown in. But since when was this guy a master swordsman? Furthermore, how are they gonna incorporate the Sid/Barizorg story arc?

"Yes, Boss."

On this week's episode of Power Rangers Super Megafarce:

Episode 3: "Blue Saber Saga"

After suffering a crushing defeat at the hands of the newest Armada monster, Noah must do what it takes to prove himself as the better swordsman.

For this episode, the series attempts a faithful adaptation of Gokaiger episode 4, but with the usually flat acting. Emma is hot and all, but her acting is not getting any better. And the production team must have run short on their make-up budget that you can see the zits on Noah's forehead. On the bright side, the series shows that the Rangers can go directly to Gokaiger mode without going through Goseiger mode.

Once again, the series deals with pre-MMPR issues the way it usually does. In the Gokaiger version, the Gokaigers minus Gokai Blue change into different Whites (including Big One from J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai); this version replaces the Whites with S.P.D. (mainly because the suits were just used in the previous episode). But that's not all - Gosei has unlocked the Mystic Force powers so that the Rangers can use the Mystic Dragon Zord. If this is the case, why doesn't Gosei just give the Rangers all of the powers since he's the only one capable of unlocking them? Once again, the series misses the point of having the Ranger Keys and unlocking their powers.
