I heard that was an April Fool's joke.

Y'know how in the Dekaranger episode the Gokaiger, when changed into the Dekaranger replicas, fought a bit, well, Wire-Fuey?

Good reason for that. Koichi Sakamoto directed that episode. He's also directing some of the fights in the show (And the reason why you easily saw DragonRanger and TyranoRanger in the epic fight). You will see Power Ranger influences throughout the series and the toys.

Sorry Super Sentai purists.

Sorry Super Sentai purists.

Well, wire-fu has been used in various Super Sentai shows long before Power Rangers. Just watch the opening sequence of Kagaku Sentai Dynaman (1983). Also, most the original Dekaranger fight scenes were very wire-fuey to begin with. Look how Ban/Deka Red does his downward shootout in episode 1.

Sakamoto has been doing Gokaiger stunt coordination more frequently because he no longer works for the Power Rangers production crew. The most obvious Power Ranger reference was in episode 5, where Luka-chan as Go-on Yellow used her spinning wheel cuff on a Gormin. That weapon was only used in PR RPM, not in Go-Onger.

On this week's episode of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

ep08screen.jpg

Episode 8: "Little Spy Tactics" (スパイ小作戦)

Legends of the Week: None

Villain of the Week: Action Commander Sneak Brothers

Gokai Color of the Week: None

Past Sentai of the Week: Denshi Sentai Denziman (too old for Power Rangers fans to know), Dai Sentai Goggle V (another old one the Power Rangers fans wouldn't know) and Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger (Power Rangers Wild Force)

As Walz Gil grows more frustrated by the Gokaigers, Damaras and Insarn secretly assign the Sneak Brothers to spy on the pirates. Meanwhile, as the Gokaigers are having lunch, Navi is nowhere to be seen.

Well, this episode was mostly just a filler, but it's still a load of laughs. And the Gokai Bat needs to be used more often.

Also, the Gokaigers once again go retro with the electro punches of Denziman and the rhythmic gymnastics of Goggle V.

Easter Eggs

1. Before the Gokaigers finish off the Sneak Brothers, Gokai Red says, "Stop the Battle." This is in reference to the ending theme of the 1982 series Dai Sentai Goggle-V.

Next week on Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

Episode 9: "The Lion, Runs" (獅子、走る)

The Gokaigers bump into Gao Red on their search for an island in the sky.

Gokai Machine #3 - Gaolion - for the DX Gokaioh will be released soon, but it has a very unusual twist. The Power Animal originally from Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger will have light and sound effects, but when combined with Gokaioh, it forms Shinken Gokaioh (revealing the five kanji of Samurai Sentai Shinkenger).

More late-breaking news:

According to JEFusion, Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger will follow Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger and Samurai Sentai Shinkenger as the next Super Sentai to lend their powers to the Gokaigers. The Hurricanger Gokai Machine will be based on the Fuuraimaru.

Also, some spoilers for the next few episodes:

- For the Shinkenger tribute episode, only Kaoru Shiba (formerly Princess Shinken Red) will be the only guest.

- It will be revealed that Joe learned his swordsmanship from Barizorg, who was known as Sid.

And an update on Gokai Silver:

- Gokai Silver will be played by Jun Ikeda, who has appeared in a few J-Drama shows.

- His mecha will be Gozyuzin, a robotic T-Rex that transforms into a robot and drill battleship. It is clearly an homage to the dinosaur mecha of Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger and Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger, as well as the V-Rex in Mirai Sentai Timeranger.

Minipla Gokaiger Robo Series: Kaizoku Gattai Gokaioh (海賊合体ゴーカイオー)

Bandai, 2011

Made in Japan

Contents

Box 1: Gokai Galleon

Box 2: Gokai Jet

Box 3: Gokai Trailer

Box 4: Gokai Racer

Box 5: Gokai Marine with Gokai Ho

Ramune-flavored candy in each box

Minipla - It's the Super Sentai Robot counterpart to Gunpla. The kits are fairly cheap and very easy to assemble. Plus, each box comes with a delicious ramune candy pill. The line is also a great alternative for Super Sentai fans who can't afford the big and expensive DX robot toys.

Each box contains 1-2 runners of parts molded in a single color. Gokai Galleon and Gokai Trailer are molded in their correct colors of red and yellow, respectively. The other three Gokai Machines, however, are molded in black. In the case of Gokai Marine, it's not so much of a problem, as it looks better in black than the original white color. But for Gokai Jet and Gokai Racer, you will need to use paint no matter what, as the provided stickers don't do much to give the kit justice.

Speaking of paint, that's exactly what I did with mine. There's still a lot more detailing to do, but I'm impressed with the end result.

When combined, Gokaioh has an over 40 points of articulation, making it as poseable as a HGUC Gundam kit. Weapons consist of the two Gokai Ken swords and the chest-mounted Gokai Ho cannon. Each component has a front-opening compartment; in the case of the arms, each has two. Unlike its larger DX counterpart, this kit does not have the spring-loaded mechanism that's activated by the wheel on the back. Fortunately, each compartment has one or two hardpoints for the upcoming Gokai Machine add-ons such as Magiranger's Magi Dragon and Dekaranger's Pat Striker.

Overall, Gokaioh blows away the Minipla Dekaranger Robo I built over seven years ago. I can't wait to get my DX Gokaioh to do a side-by-side comparison.

Past Sentai of the Week: Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger (Power Rangers Wild Force), Kousoku Sentai Turboranger (Power Rangers fans wouldn't know this) and Choujin Sentai Jetman (another one the Power Rangers fans wouldn't know)

The Gokaigers discover the island in the sky, but so do Zangyack Empire, who dispatches Action Commander Bowser to dispose of the pirates. Their battle, however, angers the Gao Lion, which promptly kicks everyone out of the island. During the chaos, Gokai Pink is injured and her wounds are tended to by Kakeru Shishi, a local veterinarian and the former Gao Red.

Finally, after a so-so filler episode, the series picks up with more action than ever. I haven't seen Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger, but I was very impressed with the interaction between Kakeru Shishi and the Gokaigers. And after seeing pics of the DX toy, we finally see what Gao Lion is capable of when combined with Gokaioh. In addition, we're also treated to some old-school action with the suits of 1989's Kousoku Sentai Turboranger and 1991's Choujin Sentai Jetman.

"Kansen! Gokaioh!"

For every Super Sentai series, there's a DX (Deluxe) giant robot toy to go with it. This year is no exception, with Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger being represented by the Gokaioh.

Standing at 12" in height, Gokaioh is among the tallest of the stand-alone DX robots. It is a combination of five vehicles: Gokai Galleon (main body), Gokai Jet (right arm), Gokai Trailer (left leg), Gokai Racer (left arm) and Gokai Marine (right leg). In the show, however, the latter four vehicles have only seen individual action once, while Gokai Galleon mainly serves as the Gokaigers' home. Each vehicle boasts excellent detail and a very glossy finish - though Gokai Galleon could use some silver and black highlights on the forward hull. Design-wise, they are spot-on to their TV appearance, but one must wonder how a blue box with small wings can pass for a jet or what a race car and trailer truck have to do with pirates. But that's just simple nitpicking, and Super Sentai robots are never meant to be taken seriously. Each vehicle has a panel that opens like a treasure chest, and the interior is skillfully detailed with panel lines.

dxgokaioh03-crosshatch.jpg

dxgokaioh04-glowingedges.jpg

Transformation is a complete breeze, as it involves mainly opening and folding parts. The only exception is Gokai Trailer, as it's a parts-former due to its articulation in vehicle mode. Gokaioh's head has a red dome that clearly resembles a bandanna, but the hat really completes the Buccaneer look. In terms of poseability, the toy is at most a statue, with only the arms moving forward and back. Disappointing for people who are into Transformers and Gundam toys, but still an excellent display piece, nevertheless.

dxgokaioh05.jpg

dxgokaioh06.jpg

For weapons, Gokaioh comes with two Gokai Ken swords that resemble a cross between a cutlass and a scimitar. The toy's main party piece is the giant wheel on the back. Turning it clockwise opens each panel in succession: left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg, chest. Turning the wheel counter-clockwise opens all five panels simultaneously. Inside the chest is the Gokai Ho cannon, which is used for the Gokai Star Burst finishing attack. the chest panel, when opened, somewhat looks like a long plank; it is detachable to give Gokaioh a less-clunky look.

dxgokaioh07.jpg

dxgokaioh08.jpg

"Let's Go! Gokai Star Burst!"

What separates Gokaioh from other DX robots is its ability to take upgrades. As the series progresses, the Gokaigers encounter a past Ranger, acquiring power-ups on the Ranger Keys that represent that person's Super Sentai team. For the DX Gokaiger, there are Gokai Machine upgrades: Magi Dragon (Magiranger), Pat Striker (Dekaranger), Gao Lion (Gaoranger) and plenty more to come. Each panel of Gokaioh can store a component of the Gokai Machine to use as a special attack. I'll be covering this on my next review, once I get the Pat Striker.

In short, if you want a poseable Gokaioh, get the Minipla kit and some paints. But if you want something to tower over your collection on your shelf, the DX Gokaioh is the perfect toy.

The Gokaigers battle an invading Zangyack fleet led by a green ship, which Joe identifies as a "Special Destruction Unit". As a ship contains a rare mineral capable of destroying planets, Joe and Luka infiltrate the ship to acquire it, only to find themselves being challenged to a game of poker.

Yes, it's mostly another filler episode, but we learn a few things: Luka-chan is an expert in cheating, Joe has the luck of Bret Maverick, and Captain Marvelous simply sucks at cards.

All I have to say is this...

The next clue to the Greatest Treasure in the Universe is a samurai, which results in a confrontation between the Gokaigers and Kaoru Shiba, who demands them to hand over the Shinkenger keys. But when the Zangyack launches yet another invasion, Joe is given an unexpected reunion from a former comrade.

Despite not having the actual Shinken Red, this is what the Samurai Sentai Shinkenger (Power Rangers Samurai) fans have been waiting for: a tribute episode to the highly acclaimed 2009 series (as it was named the #1 Super Sentai series of the Heisei Era). And this is what the Gokaiger fans expected: intense sword fights, major plot twists and a cliffhanger ending. Joe's past comes back to haunt him, and it costs the Gokaigers big-time. In addition, we're treated to some old-school action with the suits of Zyuranger, Dynaman and Gingaman.

This show never fails to deliver. And what a way to end a 2-part story arc. We learn more about Joe's past and how he was recruited by the Gokaigers. We're also treated to more fast-paced action that picks up from episode 11. Box 1: Magi Dragon

Box 2: Pat Striker

Box 3: Gao Lion Set A (head and front legs)

Box 4: Gao Lion Set B (body, rear legs and tail)

Ramune-flavored candy in each box

For every past Super Sentai power unlocked, Gokaioh is given a unique upgrade. And for the Minipla Gokaioh kit,. Bandai has released the Gokai Machine candy toy series to go with it. As with all Minipla kits, each box comes with a delicious ramune candy pill and the box is cut from one side to access the assembly instructions.

minipla12.jpg

Magi Dragon (マジドラゴン)

In Mahou Sentai Magiranger, the Majin forms of Magi Yellow, Magi Blue, Magi Pink and Magi Green combined into the mythical mecha known as the Magi Dragon. In episode 3 of Gokaiger, the Gokaigers unlocked the powers of the Magiranger keys, giving them their own Magi Dragon, which enables Gokaioh to fly and execute the Gokai Magi Bind. Unfortunately, no toy version has given justice to the Gokai Machine Magi Dragon - and this is no exception. Sure, it has more articulation than its larger DX counterpart, but it's just an underwhelming pile of plastic. Disassembling it and attaching the parts to Gokaioh doesn't make either figure any better, either.

Pat Striker (パトストライカー)

Deka Red's badass mecha from Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger gives Gokaioh the firepower it needs starting from episode 5, when the Gokaigers unlocked the powers of the Dekaranger keys. Save for a few differences, this is spot-on to the original Pat Striker. The front fenders and quarter panels attach to Gokaioh's limbs to give it Gatling cannons for the Gokai Full Blast attack. In addition, the front fenders become handguns for Gokaioh to do some hard-boiled, dual-wielding action. By far my favorite of the set - and not just because I'm a hardcore Dekaranger fan.

Gao Lion (ガオライオン)

Gao Red's Power Animal from Hyakujuu Sentai Gaoranger sided with the Gokaigers after they unlocked the powers of the Gaoranger keys. When summoned, Gao Lion merges with Gokaioh (which separates its legs) to form the centaur-like Gao Gokaioh and decimate the enemy with the Gokai Animal Heart. After unlocking the powers of the Shinkenger keys, Gao Gokaioh changes into Shinken Gokaioh and destroys its opponents with the Gokai Samurai-giri. By itself, the Gao Lion kit has good detail and articulation. However, once combined with Gokaioh, things go wrong. Gao Gokaioh was a silly idea to begin with, and it shows on any toy version. Shinken Gokaioh would've benefitted from the Minipla's poseability, but it ends up being very clunky. The hind legs protrude too far forward when attached to Gokaioh's forearms, resulting in some wonky arms. The naginata attachments for the Gokai Ken swords is a badass add-on, but the Rekka Daizantou is disappointingly small (even though it is formed from Gao Lion's body). As a Samurai Sentai Shinkenger fan, I consider this one to be a minor letdown. At least I have the Super Robot Chogokin Shinkenoh.

Past Sentai of the Week: Gekisou Sentai Carranger (Power Rangers Turbo), Kousoku Sentai Turboranger (too '80s for Power Rangers fans) and Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers)

Meanwhile, when it is revealed that Kyosuke interfered with Action Commander Zaggai's mission in the last episode, the Zangyack forces send some troops to eliminate him, while Insarn falls madly in love with him.

This episode is pure cornball. If you've never seen Gekisou Sentai Carranger, you will either love or hate this episode, as it emulates the show's self-parody and slapstick style. And because of this, Kyosuke steals the entire show and leaves the Gokaigers in confusion most of the time.

Ranger Key Series: Henshin Keitai Mobirates (変身携帯モバイレーツ)

Bandai, 2011

Made in China

Requires two AAA batteries (not included)

Contents

Mobirates cell phone

Gokai Red Ranger Key

Shinken Red Ranger Key

Go-on Red Ranger Key

mobirates02.jpg

"Gokai Change! GOOOOKAIGER!!!"

For every Super Sentai group, there is a device for them to automatically change into their heroic suits. In the case of the Gokaigers, there's the Mobirates (short for "Mobile Pirates") cell phone, which is powered by the Ranger Key system.

mobirates03.jpg

The Mobirates looks and functions like the typical toy flip phone, but it's a massive brick when placed next to a real cell phone. And unlike the Shodophone for Samurai Sentai Shinkenger, this one does not come with a carrying case (mostly because the Gokaigers never use one on-screen; they just pull their weapons and accessories from out of nowhere).

mobirates04.jpg

mobirates06.jpg

mobirates05.jpg

Open up the phone and you have your typical numeric keypad. Only the number keys and the top center button function. Entering specific four-digit codes will have the Mobirates (voiced by Tomokazu Seki) shout special commands. Some examples include:

  • 0001 to 0035 - Super Sentai groups from Goranger to Gokaiger.
  • 1224 - "Merry Christmas!"
  • 0101 - "Akemashite Omedeto!" ("Happy New Year!")
  • 1992, 2001-2005, 2008-2011 - Super Sentai robot combining commands (by corresponding year).
  • 5501 - "Hasshin! Gokai Galleon!"

Above the keypad is a large key hole, which is the most important part of this toy.

mobirates14.jpg

The set comes with three Ranger Keys: Gokai Red, Shinken Red and Go-on Red. Each key somewhat resembles a Playmobil figure made to look like a Super Sentai hero. Poseability is limited to 360° arm movement. Other Ranger Keys are available in five-pack sets, gashapon and candy toy packages, and other toys in the Ranger Key Series line. In addition, special edition Ranger Keys have been offered in the Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger opening theme CD single and an issue of Terebi magazine.

mobirates09.jpg

So how does this work? You swing the arms upward and fold the figure by the center to reveal the key behind its legs. (Unfortunately, the keys do not have the spring-loaded feature used in the TV show.) You then hold the Mobirates in your left hand and the key in your right hand, pointing the key forward while yelling, "Gokai Change!" Then in one swift move, insert the key all the way into the key hole and crank it clockwise. This opens the top portion of the phone, transforming it into the Gokaiger logo while flashing a red light and shouting the name of the Super Sentai you inputted.

mobirates11.jpg

mobirates12.jpg

This is downright brilliant! Using the key system, the Mobirates recognizes different Ranger Keys and plays their corresponding names. The special edition keys will play secret vocal greetings as well. In addition, when you enter 0000 on the keypad, the phone enters into "VS" mode, wherein it plays a special versus message when two corresponding Ranger Keys (ex. Shinken Red and Go-on Red) are entered. There's even a hidden message for Kamen Rider OOO (whether or not an actual Kamen Rider OOO key has been made is yet to be known).

The Ranger Key system offers near-infinite replay value, as the keys work with other toys such as the Gokai Gun, Gokai Sabre and Gokai Buckle. While the Gokai Buckle is merely used to store one key, the Gokai Gun and Gokai Sabre will enter into Final Wave mode when a Ranger Key is used.

Overall, this is a fun Super Sentai toy for cosplaying or if you're bored at work.

Editor's Note: The Bandai Asia release has the volume severely toned down in compliance with noise and safety regulations in Hong Kong and parts of Southeast Asia.

Damn Basco is more of a cheater than Diend.

I'm disappointed that that the FreeJoker is just another Zangyack warship variant.

So we get Zangyack may well color code their ships.

Gold - Front line warship

Green- Planetary destruction special unit

Purple- Imperial Guard

Red- Privateer

On this week's episode of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

ep15screen.jpg

Episode 15: "A Privateer Appears" (私掠船現る)

Legend of the Week: Tohru Furuya (Casshern Sins, Yamcha in Dragon Ball Z) as Aka Red (voice)

Villain of the Week: Basco ta Jolokia

Gokai Color of the Week: N/A

Past Sentai of the Week: None

The Zangyack Empire sends a privateer to deal with the Gokaigers, and he is revealed to be Basco ta Jolokia - a former comrade of Captain Marvelous.

Now this is where things start to unwrap for Captain Marvelous' past. It turns out that many years ago, Captain Marvelous, Basco and Aka Red were members of the Red Pirates until Basco betrayed them and sided with the Zangyack Empire. Furthermore, it is revealed that Basco is in possession of the Extra Ranger Keys, which he activates with his trumpet to battle the Gokaigers. Our heroes have some difficulty battling Time Fire (Timeranger), Dragon Ranger (Zyuranger), King Ranger (Ohranger), Shurikenger (Hurricaneger) and Deka Break (Dekaranger) before they manage to defeat them, but are cornered by Shinken Gold (Shinkenger), Magi Shine (Magiranger), Kiba Ranger (Dairanger) and Gosei Knight (Goseiger), Go-on Gold & Go-on Silver (Go-onger), Gao Silver (Gaoranger) and Mega Silver (Megaranger), Abare Killer (Abaranger) and Bouken Silver (Boukenger) as Basco leaves this episode in a cliffhanger.

And so begins the countdown to Gokai Silver's debut.

Next week on Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger:

Episode 16: "Clash! Sentai vs. Sentai" (激突!戦隊VS戦隊)

With his shipmates held captive by Basco, Captain Marvelous must find a way to save them without surrendering all of the Ranger Keys to him.
