fifbeat
Just questioning the English dubbed pilot on the extras of the Robotech DVDs. It tripped me out. What's the deal of this? Were they actually gonna air it (without the Robotech tag?).
Wes
I know they were thinking of selling Macross as-is for the most part on cassette(how's that spelled again? ), but I could see how the others would be the same too. I don't think the rights were bought exclusively for Robotech for any of them, but who's to say exactly how they were planing on selling them. fifbeat
Well, I thought it was odd that the full pilot was english dubbed and all that (even keeping the characters original names, ie Stick, etc)
terry the lone wolf
I think HG acquired the rights to Mospeada first and was planning on airing it as a stand alone series. Later they recievied Macross from Tatsunoko to distribute it on home video but then decided to air that as well. Then of course the decision came to combine Macross with Mospeada & Southern Cross to stretch out the episode count. I own the english adaption of SDF Macross written by Carl Macek and drawn by Svea Macek; on the back of the cover they make a "slight" reference to the combining of the shows and this is before they decided to retitled it Robotech. Totoro242
The first episodes of Macross did make it to cassette with Rick Yamata as the main character and no mention of the Zor/Robotech Masters or Robotechnology. Mospeada never made it to release and from what I understand was slated for release after the success of the Macross tape. Remember, the name Robotech was from Revell. Revell owned the Robotech name only, not any rights to the show itself.
terry the lone wolf
I've heard that Revell, who at the time had rights to the designs for Macross, Dorvack, and Orguss, strong-armed HG to retitled it Robotech. They were looking for a cartoon to push their model kits and around the same time HG acquired the animation.

So they were going to releases Mospeada and Macross roughly simultaneously...? Seems like they would've finished Macross beforte starting in on another series, but who knows... TheLoneWolf
What's the theme song? Is it as horrible as the "Just a pile of rust was all the found on that isle" Macross theme...? It's been a while since I watched it, but I think the theme song was still in Japanese. If it was sung in English, I'm pretty sure it would've been as memorable as the English Macross theme song. I heard that the Mospeada "TV pilot" was just a test run for Harmony Gold's dubbing capabilities. That would explain why the they never bothered to compose English lyrics for the opening theme. Vermillion21
I remember paying $15 for that Macross comic when I was a kid ... most expensive comic I ever bought!!!!
lord_breetai
I saw the MOSPEADA pilot not on the DVD but on VHS distro back in the old analog fansub days. It didn't have an opening there and was still a workprint with a clock and film counter real... so it's possible they just never got around to dubbing the song and when they put it on DVD they just cleaned it up and put in the original theme. They were looking for a cartoon to push their model kits and around the same time HG acquired the animation. I have never heard this. Takatoku had licensed the models only to Revell and Revell came up with their own name of Robotech. The agreement was to benefit both companies as the show would have a model kit line to promote and the model kit line would have a show to support it. I have never heard that Revell was looking for a show to push their model kits.
Roger
Yeah, I don't know if "strong-armed" fits the case at all. Revell figured out that the models they planned on selling had corresponding shows that were being licensed by Harmony Gold, and vice-versa. IIRC, Carl Macek was asked about it last year on the Space Station Liberty talk show and said that it was an idea that both companies came up with simultaneously. Harmony Gold definitely got the better end of that deal, because they ended up getting the Robotech trademark from Revell. Also, I don't believe any of the toys Revell imported (like the Robolinks, etc.) came from Takatoku, did they? I know that the models they brought over were sold in Japan by Arii, Imai, L&S, and Takara, and I believe Revell didn't even make deals with those parent companies or the owners of the intellectual properties those models were based on. I thought that they were just purchasing the kits straight from the manufacturing companies (which was the same thing that got FASA in trouble with the Battletech designs). Gubaba
The video cassette. What dub does it have?? A weird one. All your favorite Robotech voice actors talking about the "SDF-1 Macross" and "Atalia Island," characters named "Lisa Hayase" and "Rick Yamada," Roy checking out Minmay's slip and the Japanese title for "Count Down" left intact, but the strange little flashback/dream sequence of Focker in his Fokker cut out. Think of it as the missing link between Macross in Japanese and Robotech.

Area88
Thats quite the time capsule you have there. Any chance of ripping the Harmony Gold Macross VHS and creating a torrent for us fans?
Gubaba
It's packed away in strorage right now... Didn't they put the whole thing on the first Robotech Legacy DVD collection or the ADV Macross DVD...? Or was it just the the first episode? And, if you plan to watch it, you have to surivive the horror of the theme song... "Just a pile of rust was all they FOUND on that isle, that no-one expected to see! Ten years later, Super Fortress MACROSS would rise! Guardian of you and of MEEEEEE!" *shudder*

Gubaba
Hey we've all seen Macross 7 and Space Gundam V, we're well prepared. I take exception to your lumping Macross 7 in with Harmony Gold Macross and Space Gandam V. Neither of the latter had Max kicking tail in a VF-22, for example. ComicKaze
HG Macross Boobytrap had a pretty wide release. I mean, I found it at Rogers Video up here in Calgary back in 1993. The cover art was little different though.

The cover art was little different though. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you must be talking about the Robotech: Boobytrap VHS... I mean, THAT one, was a wide release. (it's the one that came in a very large F.H.E. "porno" type large video box. I have a pretty observant eye when it comes to anything "video/VHS" (from early 80's to current) and the version of HG Macross Boobytrap is really rare. Besides, you said yours had a different cover? Again, please correct me if I'm wrong. Edited June 9, 2008 by fifbeat
Totoro242
I would agree with Comickaze that the Harmony Gold Macross tape had a fairly wide release. I used to see it in video stores and comic book shops in the 80's and 90's. It was also available for mail-order to fans in the back of sci-fi magazines in 1984. Like I said earlier, they don't command much of a price on Ebay when they show up, but hardly any video tapes do anymore.

Gubaba
Yes it was included as an Extra on one of the "Elements of Robotechnology" bonus discs with the Legacy set. I feel like I'm going around in circles here... Ginrai said that Harmony Gold Macross (hereafter HGM) had only one episode featured on "the DVD." I asked "which DVD...Robotech (Legacy) or ADV Macross," since I thought it was an extra on both. He said, "Neither. It's HGM." Which led me to believe that perhaps Girai was saying it had been released, not as an extra, but as a main feature. So I asked if there was an HGM DVD...to which I get the repsonse, "It's an extra on Robotech Legacy." I think someone misunderstood someone else along the way, and I hope it wasn't me... Ginrai
Guys, VIDEO TAPE. I have a VHS of Harmoy Gold's original Macross release called Boobytrap, which is the first three episodes dubbed by most of the same actors as Robotech, with a mostly accurate translation though there's some odd naming and word choices (Phaser X weapons, Rick Yamata) and of course the super bad new theme song. There is a DVD in the Robotech Legacy sets and presumably also in the Protoculture Edition that contains ONLY the first episode of this, and not all three that are on the video tape. Edited June 10, 2008 by Ginrai
terry the lone wolf
It was released as an extra on disc 5 of the Legacy of Robotech/Elements of Protoculture but only the 30min. pilot episode called Space Fortress Macross. The 90min. version that had Boobytrap & Lynn Minmay/Countdown was only released on VHS. The Comico adaption is word for word translation of the pilot for Space Fortress Macross. Here's some pics: The Protoculture Collection and some caps from Space Fortress Macross episode 1 "Boobytrap"
