I didn't have The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen because I don't remember ever seeing an LXG comic.

LXG, along with From Hell (film stared Johnny Depp, trying to hunt down Jack the Ripper), were originaly comics written by Alan Moore of Watchman fame.

You all forgot Ghost World, which I personally liked, but I am sure someone hated it.

Doh!...I forgot about it...I liked it too, but never had a chance to read the graphic novel though :p

The Phantom (1996)

The Punisher (1989)

The Punisher (2004)

The Shadow (1994)

Spider-Man (1977 - with Nicholas Hammond)

Steel (1997)

Supergirl (1984)

Superman III (1983)

Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987)

Tank Girl (1995)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Turtles in Time (1993)

I modified your list for myself for stuff that I've never seen or the few that I liked.

Primarily, I wanted to make suer Superman I & II weren't on it! The first one was great when I saw it as a kid. Superman II had its moments, but my favorite was the moment of, "... son of Jor-El,kneel before Zod!"

Also, the Ninja Turtle movies sucked to no end.

Punisher movies are supposed to suck, from what I gather.

Wasn't the Nick Fury flick with David Hasslehof?

Also, was Batman Returns the one with Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman? I liked it just for that.

I still like George Lucas, but Howard the Duck ranks as one of his worst creations. The Star Wars Christmas Special is #1, however as the most putrid of his creations. To top it off, it had the main actors in it also!

noone has mentioned rocketeer??/

Because it's a great movie.

No.......it wasn't <_<

Rocketeer rules! (adds to my DVD list)

Its really hard to make a decent comic book movie because so many comics are by nature ridiculous.

I don't have time right now (I'm at my 2nd job) but tonight I'll go through and come up with a list that fits me.

I'm just so tempted to go through an pick out the ones from the lists that I liked.

The Ninja Turtle movies were probably about as good as it can get for them. The only way I can see it getting better is if they just made it more like the original comic book. I thought the costumes were pretty damn good, and considering the target market (watchers of the cartoon) they did a bang up job. Shredder was awesome (I love his TMNT2 non-super costume). Personally I like the first 2 movies, especially the 2nd. Sure, there were screw ups... but what movie is free from those? Especially under the scrutiny of thousands of internet geeks. :p

you put X-Men and X-Men 2 on the list, yet you consider ROcketeer a good movie? LOL.

cause rocketeer was actually a pretty good movie. i saw it in the theatres when it first came out, then watched it a few times on TV and it still held my interest. you can't say that 95% of the movies out there so that saying a lot.

  • 2 months later...

The Rocketeer was one of the better comic adaptations. I also thought X-Men was good, though neither was a great movie.

Many others are mediocre at best in my book: The Shadow, the original Crow, Tank Girl...but to me they're just bad popcorn-fodder.

Out of the superhero movies I've seen (not that I've seen that many), the ones that I really actively hate are the original Tim Burton Batman and the recent Hulk.

(About Tank Girl...I'll bet that not very many people have seen the original comic. It originally appeared in a British magazine called Deadline, and once it hit its stride, it was very, very good. But the movie almost completely missed out on the spirit of the comic, which wasn't even remotely serious. I remember one episode in which Tank Girl faced off against an enemy who had a male member the size of a whale's...she killed him by removing her top, causing him to get an erection thus depriving his brain of blood.)

So...did anyone here actually pay to watch Elektra this weekend?

yeah... it sucked.

The only thing that was kinda crappy about The Rocketeer was they tamed it down and didn't use Bette Page as a character. But they made up for it by using Jeniffer Connelly back when she was smokin' hot!

I plan on making the movie Abslom Daak: Dalek Killer. Do you think it will suck? I loved the comic.

However, I have to agree that Howard the Duck is the worst movie adaptation of a comic book ever made. Lucas should have had his license taken away after that one.

Batman & Robin (1997)

Blade (1998)

Blade II (2002)

Blade Trinity (2005)

Captain America (1978)

The Fantastic Four (1994)

The Hulk (2003)

Steel (1997)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Turtles in Time (1993)

Superman III

Those 10 are the only ones I saw that I didn't like... I saw a bunch of others on the list... but I liked all of those. Supergirl wasn't that bad IMO though I know a lot of people hate it... it wasn't a good movie but I'm such a fan of the character that I could forgive it.

WTF, Mystery Men kicked ass!

Vostok 7

Wow, I thought it was terrible. It was 2 hours wasted in my opinion. Same underdog overcomming obstacles to save the day, kind of plot we have seen 100x before, just this time it was more annoying.

Agreed. It wasn't even funny. <_<

1.) Fantasic Four looks terrible.

All of the trailers I saw with this were crap.

2.)Elektra.

I liked the DD theatrical cut and I loved the Directors cut.

Elektra isnt near the Theatrical DD at all.

They made her way too manby panby in this film. Stick also. He was a mean SOB in the comics. Sure Stamp looked the part but the charicterizations of both the Order and the Hand were really bad.

Overall I rate this 5/10.

Good fights. Bad plot. Bad acting. -4 alone for the complete disreguard for the charicters established by Miller and Co.

Barb Wire (1996): I hated, hated, hated this movie. It was nothing more than a cheap Casablanca ripoff with none of the charm of Casablanca.

Batman Forever (1995): I actually liked this movie. Jim Carrey made a convincing Riddler, and Tommy Lee Jones was great as Two-Face (even with the glaring continuity hole between this movie and the first film -- where Dent was black)

Captain America (1992) Let me say one thing. The Red Skull is German. German. No offense intended to the Italians on the board, but to have him be a survivor of Mussolini's Army is laughable, as the Italian Army in WW2 didn't know how to fight their way out of a paper bag.

Howard the Duck (1985): I've not seen it, yet everything I've heard about it begs me to refrain from seeing it. To hear it told, this was Lucas' big mistake before Jar-Jar.

Popeye (1980) Not bad...although not excellent either. Segar's strip is one of those that's just impossible to do in live action.

The Shadow (1994) It wasn't bad...although since I'm a fan of the old, old, old radio show (1938-'50s on the Mutual Network, starred Orson Welles among others, can still be found on the Internet or in some CD shops), and it's apparently different from the original novels this film was based on, I was a little surprised with the whole "underground crime-fighting network" angle.

Spider-Man (1977 - with Nicholas Hammond) I've seen the TV series with Hammond...and sadly, it was the best they could do at the time with pre-Star Wars, pre-CG special effects on a mid-70s TV budget.

Superman III (1983) Cheesy, but not abyssmal. I kinda like it.

Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987)Cheesy and very abyssmal.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991) Vanilla Ice. That's all I have to say.

X-Men (2000) This was, without a doubt, the second-best comic-book movie I've ever seen. (The best was Spider-Man 2.)

And Dick Tracy (1993?) Passable adaptation of Chester Gould's strip, although it was way too top-heavy (too many villains, and too many celebrity stars) to be workable. They tried to cram every bad guy in the Tracyverse into that movie, and it just wouldn't go. It might have been better if they focused on Big Boy, perhaps giving him Flattop or Itchy as a hired gunsel and jettisoned everyone else.

Any one remember the 1970's era Dr. Strange? I barely do, but it was so forgettable I can't remember much more than there was one.

Another comic related (but not adapted) movie was the Karate Kid. The name is owned by DC comics and in the credits at the end there the blurb about how The Karate Kid is licensed by DC or some such. One and two were good, three was pushing it and four sucked the hairy one.

Never saw Barb Wire

Batman Forever - Val Kilmer made a more believable Batman/Bruce Wayne than Michael "Deer in the Headlights look" Keaton and George "I forgot how to act in this movie" Clooney. They should have focused on one criminal rather than do the team-up. But the really sucky part was Chris "I never knew how to act in the first place" O'Donnell. Batman and Robin was worse. Alicia Silverstone is yummy to look at, but she can't act. why couldn't they have had nipples on her suit?

Blade - good, but I was all vampired out with Anne Rice.

Blade II - never saw it or Blade Trinity

Brenda Starr - who?

Captain America - the 80's era movie was lightyears beyond the 70's era TV show/movie with the guy with the enormous motorcycle helmet. But that's not saying much.

Catwoman - never saw it and don't want to

Haven't seen the Crow sequels, but if they are as bad as the lameass TV show, I don't want to.

Daredevil - Ben Affleck in tights does not a superhero make

Elektra - adolescent male fantasy, but I'm no longer an adolescent.

The Fantastic Four - Nothing fantastic or even humdrum about this movie from what I hear, but I never saw it.

Howard the Duck - George should have stuck with Star Wars. Wait-a-minute, he should have retired.

The Hulk Better than Lou Ferigno in terms of what the Hulk could do, but the CGI was a bit much

Judge Dredd - the Itallion stallion is a long way from Rocky and going the wrong way.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - I liked it, but it left a bad aftertaste.

Mystery Men - How can you go wrong with Pee Wee Herman and William H. Macy?

Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Dave should have never left the beach.

The Phantom - I never liked the strip and I liked this movie less.

Popeye - I ham what I ham and that's all that I ham (sic). If it hadn't been a musical it would have been much better.

The Punisher - never saw either incarnation.

The Shadow - Alec Baldwin is on my all time worst actors list (along with Michael Keaton). If he ever gets elected president, I'll move to another country.

Spawn - The stupid clown thing sucked. But that's all I remember.

Spider-Man - I remember the TV series not the movie and I remember the bad porn music they had for a soundtrack.

Steel - Never saw it.

Supergirl - I wish I had never saw it.

Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest For Peace - Farces both of them.

Tank Girl - I liked, but never read the comic.

TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze and TMNT III: Turtles in Time - Right, next.

Wonder Woman - Never saw.

X-Men and X2: X-Men United - I liked both, but will I like X3?

Oh man. My bro got me the DVD set for Christmas and I watched this movie and cringed the entire time. The only part I like is where Kent fights Superman.

What? Alec Baldwin is a great artist (didn't you watch Team America?) But seriously, he's a great actor that makes crappy movies. But give him a meaty role and he'll eat it up... ever seen the knife set scene in GlenGary GlenRoss?

Michael Keaton is also a great actor, he just didnt stretch his natural comedic abilities and decided to go for the straight roles.

I never saw GlenGary GlenRoss. But I have seen The Hunt For Red October (good because it was early Clancy and it has Mr Connery), The Shadow (nice visual effects, but the acting was low budget), The Cat in the Hat (I won't waste my time commenting), Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (yes, he provided a voice for that), Pearl Harbor (it's Titanic with a love triangle), Mercury Rising (I forget what it was about it was that good), Working Girl (he was in that, but I can't remember much about it except we see Melanie Griffith topless), Married to the Mob (with a name like "Cucumber" how can you not take his role seroiusly), Bettlejuice (my two "favorite" actors - pure bliss), and She's Having a Baby (where he's only in about five minutes of the movie).

Fair enough, but I think that supports my argument that he makes crappy movies moreso... :D

Alec Baldwin: "That is the F.A.G. way. Soon, the whole world will say, 'Good going, F.A.G. You made the world a better place, didn't you, F.A.G.?'"

Yep his comments in Team America really embody what he is all about... Being a worthless pussy that is.

the thing is that Alec Baldwin at this point in his career can pick and choose his roles. Why does he choose craptacular ones? Does he think he'll outshine all the rest of the actors in the movie?

Nobody is mentioning Hellboy??? that show was a complete turd! and Alien vs Predator??? bleh! actually I'm still waiting for a good movie based on a comic, almost all of 'em are summer dumb teeny booper shows, really sad... Tomb Raider is another one.. oh wait, that one is from a video game.. oh well, having Angelina doesn't make something good I guess (almost no fan service!!! hehehehe!) Actually it'll be hard to make a good movie out of a comic since most comics from around here are IMHO very mediocre, nothing beats the good old manga! Just my 0.2 cents, later guys ;)

Hellboy sucks:

Stupid characters:

1. Hellboy - Totally lame Terminator wannabe, tried for an "Hasta La Vista.. Baby" type line before during and after EVERY combat scene. He was beyond 'over the top' and into the stupid zone with trying to be tough... I loved how he was flying through the air at 100mph geting blown up, hit with acid and all other kinds of unpelasant things while puffing on a cigar.

2. Agent Meyers - Super sissy little boy who acts like a 9 year old when he first meets Hellboy, then he attempts to steal Hellboys girlfriend, which would be out of character for him... I mean you don't hit on your hero's girlfriend, that would be like me hitting on Maria Shriver, in front of Arnold... Nevermind the fact that one second Meyers is a puntang one second, then a pimp the next.

3. Rasputin's girlfriend - What the hell was her deal!!? She was aiding the Nazi mummy guy and Rasputin end the world... Why would THAT be in HER favor????? "Yay, I rule a baren wasteland! There are no more people to boss around because my boyfriend ate them all."

Holes in plot:

1. Insane-O monsters, they are imortal one second, then when it serves Hellboy looking cool, the die like dogs. And of course in the end you can just light them on fire and they dissapear, but otherwise, if action sequences dictate... They can go for hours smashing through brick walls, and killing hundreds.

2. Hellboys adopted Father was Catholic and (I guess) so was Hellboy however ironic THAT is. So at the last second when Hellboy decides to become the devil, then at the last second changes his mind and battles Rasputin, God fails to help Hellboy out... What kind of crap is that? If Satin (Rasputin) is on Earth messin the place I would hope God would do something about it... I mean at least give Hellboy somethin.. It left you with the impression that there is no God, but there certainly IS a Devil.

3. Hellboys girlfriend can light anything in fire and is basically a walking nutron bomb that incinirates anything in her path however her clothes, and Hellboy's seem to be impervious, as well as Agent Meyers, who is a normal human.

Other than that crap it was ok for a movie that relies on effects, how creative...

What a let down.

I would have to pretty much agree with most of y'all choices. The movies I really hated was The Phantom. Some movies I skipped out like Hulk, Elektra, Catwoman, and Daredevil. Somehow I knew they suck. Spiderman and X-men seem like the films that Hollywood didnt screw up. Of course I can't ssay anything the Fantastic 4. I got a feeling it will be bad.
