https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo1YkF4UqEM The Guyver New Line Cinema, 1991 Directed by Screaming Mad George and Steve Wang (Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight) Based on the manga by Yoshiki Takaya (Hades Project Zeorymer) Running Time: 92 minutes Rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and strong language. Cast Jack Armstrong as Sean Barker/Guyver Mark Hamill (like no one here knows who he is...) as CIA Agent Max Reed Vivian Wu (Wenxiu in The Last Emperor, Mitsu in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III) as Mizky Segawa David Gale (1936-1991) (Dr. Hill in Re-Animator) as Fulton Balcus Michael Berryman (Skull Cowboy in The Crow, Pluto in The Hills Have Eyes) as Lisker Jimmie Walker (J. J. Evans in Good Times) as Striker Peter Spellos (Monev the Gale in Trigun, Gilliam II in Outlaw Star) as Ramsey Spice Williams-Crosby (Patrice in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Vixis in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier) as Weber Willard E. Pugh (Mayor Kuzak in RoboCop 2, Harpo in The Color Purple) as Col. Castle Jeffrey Combs (Dr. West in Re-Animator) as Dr. East David Wells as Dr. Gordon Greg Paik as Dr. Tetsu Segawa Linnea Quigley (famous B-movie scream queen) as the Scream Queen Plot Martial arts slacker Sean Barker stumbles upon an alien prototype device and bonds with it, becoming the armored warrior called the "Guyver". But now he is wanted by the Chronos Corporation, which sends its band of Zoanoids to capture him and recover the Guyver unit. Lowdown As a means to ride on the popularity of the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, a production team led by Brian Yuzna (Re-Animator, Crying Freeman) created the live-action adaptation of Yoshiki Takaya's manga Bio-Booster Armor Guyver. It had a who's-who cast of actors that every Fangoria subscriber would know. The Guyver suit was meticulously detailed, as well as most of the Zoanoids. It had the potential to be a good sci-fi film that could go toe-to-toe with Kamen Rider and Japan's tokusatsu staples. And then came the script. In an attempt to make The Guyver family-friendly, the screenplay writers resorted to slapstick comedy - especially during the fight scenes. Combined with the unbearable acting of the main cast (except Mark Hamill, who was probably here just for a paycheck) and a horrid soundtrack, the film is almost unwatchable unless you put it on Mute to appreciate some of the special effects. It's a shame the first-ever live-action Guyver turned out like this. The 1994 sequel Guyver: Dark Hero is a better product, but not without its own faults. Why the Japanese have not come up with their tokusatsu version is anyone's guess. Rating: D References The Internet Movie Database Wikipedia

So since we have threads for general discussion of sci-fi, anime, and other genres, I figure why not have a thread for martial arts movies? Come talk about any good asian martial arts movies, from hong kong, japan, korea, thailand, etc. Yesterday, i watched Azumi, a great samurai/assassin kinda movie set in japan in about the 1600's. Really cool sword fights, great choreography, good cinematography, and a super cute assassin girl. I would describe it as a live action anime. I've loved this movie since i first saw it a few years ago and developed a huge crush on Aya Ueto because of it. So, if you can find a copy of it i highly recommend it. For anyone just getting into hong kong action movies, I really have to suggest my favourite kung fu star, Donnie Yen. He's a guy that never gained the recognition in the west that his peer Jet Li has, but I believe that he is as good, if not better, than Jet. He has the skill (just as Jet does) to make the fighting style of each one of his characters different. Watch Flash point to see MMA inspired fight scenes and Ip Man for Wing Chun. He is also one of the best fight choreographers in HK cinema, working on the action scenes in Blade 2, the Princess Blade, and Highlander Endgame. Some good donnie yen movies: Sha Po Lang Ip Man 14 Blades Iron Monkey Flash Point Legend of the Wolf Hero (he has a great fight with Jet Li)

From Shane Black (Hawkins in Predator) comes The Nice Guys, a love letter to '70s buddy action-comedy films starring Russell Crowe (Hando in Romper Stomper, SID 6.7 in Virtuosity) and Ryan Gosling (The Driver in Drive, Julian in Only God Forgives). The film opened this weekend in the U.S. and has garnered a lot of praise from critics, quickly rivaling Black's 2005 cult film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Official Site Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 90% - "The Nice Guys hearkens back to the buddy comedies of a bygone era while adding something extra courtesy of a knowing script and the irresistible chemistry of its leads." OK, c'mon. Everybody has a guilty pleasure. Something that you enjoy but you know that if others knew about this pleasure you could very easily be mocked. It might be a TV show, film, a song, a musical artist, a certain type of toy, Emma Watson, whatever. Time fo 'fess up. MY guilty pleasure at the moment is La Roux (which I have previously admitted to, I know.) Strange music with backing instrumentation that sounds like it is coming out of a C64, but I think its great stuff anyway. So c'mon. What do you like that you shouldn't. ONE rule - No mocking or nastiness here. This is just a place to clear one's conscience. Taksraven

Lazer Team is a sci-fi comedy film produced by Rooster Teeth (RWBY, Red vs. Blue) and is a result of a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign (collecting pledges of US$2.4 million against a campaign target of US$650,000). In the film, four friends stumble upon an alien battle suit and find themselves in a dilemma when they split the suit among themselves. Reviews for the film have been surprisingly positive: "If you want to see the greatest cinematic usage of the jerk-off hand motion (to date), watch Lazer Team. It’s a bit of satirical sci-fi comedy that only the guys at Rooster Teeth can dream up, given a strong love for egregious dick jokes and non-stop references to Independence Day." - Matt Donato, We Got This Covered "3 super-robotic burritos out of 5. Lazer Team might not be a non-stop laugh-a-minute type of movie, but taken as a low-budget, high-energy, quick-witted homage to the best in 1980s matinee movies, it manages to be a pretty good time." - Scott Weinberg, Nerdist "3 1/2 out of 5 skulls. Comical, surprisingly intelligent, and entertaining, Lazer Team is a movie that’s worth watching, and stands a step above other popcorn flicks of its nature. Although the formula is somewhat predictable, and the plot admittedly pretty silly, the film still manages to be a success, based partially on a script that provides some interesting notes on today’s individualistic-driven generation, and the raw power that comes from good old teamwork." - Kalyn Corrigan, Bloody Disgusting Lazer Team premieres in select U.S. theaters on January 27. Syfy Channel originals, they are low budget classics that are primarily creature features that have been going on since 2002 with over 200 some film titles having the honor of being classified as such. With that said I figured we need a thread and I'll start by posting every original I've seen to date: What are your thoughts on this classic legacy?

Coming to theaters on July 24 is Pixels, a sci-fi comedy remake of the 2010 French short film of the same name. Directed by Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Bicentennial Man), the film is about an alien invasion in the form of '80s video game icons such as Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Unfortunately, it also stars Adam Sandler, which means this film will be a likely entry on the Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time thread. Pixels @ IMDb

Six-String Samurai HSX Films/Palm Pictures, 1998 Directed by Lance Mungia (The Crow: Wicked Prayer) Running Time: 91 minutes Rated PG-13 for martial arts violence and mild language. "Don't touch my guitar, man. Don't even touch my guitar." - Buddy Cast Jeffrey Falcon as Buddy Justin McGuire as the Kid Lex Lang (Gineas in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Shun in Heat Guy J) as Death (voice) Buddy: "Who are you?" Death: "Death." Buddy: "Cool. You here for me?" Death: "You and every other rock 'n' roller out to claim my throne." Synopsis In 1957, the Soviet Union nuked America and turned the country into a wasteland. The last safe haven in America was a city called Lost Vegas, ruled by King Elvis. Forty years have passed since then, and Elvis has died. Sword-wielding, guitar-picking warriors all over the wastelands embark on a perilous journey to be crowned King of Lost Vegas. On his way to the city, a lone rockabilly named Buddy saves a kid from a bunch of primitive thugs. Despite having to put up with the kid - who does nothing but moan and scream, Buddy must continue his quest to become the King, even if he has to face the Russian Army or Death himself and his heavy metal minions from hell. "Don't let the four-eyes reach Vegas alive!" - Death Lowdown B-movies - you've seen one, you've seen them all. Many of them are poorly scripted, cheaply produced and reek of horrible acting. But then, once in a while, there comes a B-movie that's so good, you can't get enough of it. Take, for example, Six-String Samurai: a loose parody of Lone Wolf and Cub and a satire of American pop culture. "Nice tuxedo. Nice tuxedo to die in!" - Pin Pals leader Jeffrey Falcon, who has spent most of his career as a white jobber in Hong Kong flicks, does a great job playing Buddy (a parody of the late rock legend Buddy Holly), who packs a sharp katana and plays a mean six-string at the same time. The acting is extremely cheesy and the script is full of one-liners that really stick to your head. You even have a host of laughable baddies for Buddy to use his katana on, such as the Pin Pals (a trio of bald bowlers), the Cleavers (a cannibalistic suburban family), a bunch of fallen Cosmonauts and the Windmill People (mutants living underground). "I ask you to kill one single guitarist, and what do I get? Dead bald guys. You four have failed me for the last -- nice shoes." - Death For the soundtrack, Bryan Tyler (Fast Five, Thor: The Dark World) and The Red Elvises capture the essence of the film with rock 'n' roll mixed with ska, surf music and Russian folk. It's amazing how their music flows with the fight scenes. "Cross that line, kid, I'll cut your little teddy bear in half. Last kid that crossed that line, I had to summon up the Spinach Monster with my rock 'n' roll magic. The Spinach Monster grabbed him, pulled him underground and made him eat spinach all day. Rumor has it, kid...he's still there." - Buddy If you're looking for some cheap thrills, pick up Six-String Samurai. You won't be disappointed. Rating: A- "You come all this way without sayin' squat. And you are tryin' to tell me that a '56 Chevy can beat a '47 Buick in a dead quarter mile...I liked you better when you weren't sayin' squat kid. Go to bed." - Buddy DVD Extras: A- When you rent or purchase the DVD, you get the theatrical trailer and two music videos by The Red Elvises. This band really kicks ass! Mesh-head: "If I were you, I'd run!" Buddy: "If you were me, you'd be good lookin'!" (Snaps fingers) Links Official Six-String Samurai Homepage Reference The Internet Movie Database
