Actually, I'm not a big fan of the first film either, for precisely the same reasons you mention. However, Production IG looks like they're doing their usual world class job in terms of animation, which is my main drawing point for this film. Same sentiment here: I'm rather fond of the GitS movie for its technical performances than for its story depth and/or faithfullness to the original manga While I will admit that the GitS movie is technically impressive, I can't really appreciate that much because of how the movie was hyped. In the movie's own hype they compare it to Akira, but if you really do compare the animation in both movies GitS isn't even in the same league, by far. Now I can't watch the movie without that comparison in my head.

Series by Shoji Kawamori I wasn't aware of...
Radd replied to crasis's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well, you will later this year when Geneon Entertainment releases it on DVD as The Daichis - Earth Defense Family. Really? Cool that they would release something relatively obscure like this. Now if I could only get an R1 release of Blazing Exchange Student. I've only ever heard of the show as 'Blazing Transfer Student'. Excellent OVA though. I also want a DVD of Hareluya Boy II. -
I suppose I'lll be the sole dissenting voice. I love Oshii, and I love Ghost in the Shell. Unfortunately, the first GitS movie by Oshii fell far short of both the original GitS manga and Oshii's other movie work. For one thing, the original GitS movie managed to strip any and all personality from each and every one of the characters. Beyond that, the very heart of the story was also removed, and we were left with shallow, meaningless pseudo-philosphical BS for dialogue. I have no doubt that this new GitS movie will be pretty, with some exceptions (I've already seen examples of inexcusably wretched CG from the film) much like the first movie. I don't expect anything more. I hope Oshii will surprise me, but I have not seen anything so far to indicate he will.

This thread has got me thinking about that Polar Lights model of the 1701 refit again. I'd be willing to spend a couple years slowly putting that together with some LEDs in it.
-
About the light you're trying to project over the top front of the saucer, if you were able to get into the kit again (I know, not possible, just a random idea that might help in future models) would there be room behind the LED to place a small mirror? For the movie refit 1701 kit in another forum someone mentioned using something like that. An alternative I think they mentioned was putting electrical tape around the LED to direct the light.

The Macross apparently did go back into service after being rebuilt. I think it was even considered to be an 'active vessel' in Macross Plus, though it acted as more a command centre than anything else. The Compendium probably clarifies this if anyone wanted to check on that.

I think the main issue with the thread here is that you specifically asked about a Robotech movie, and there is a very distinct line between Macross and Robotech. This thread should be in the Other Sci-fi forum, not in the Macross-specific forums. That's not to say you won't get any grief down there either. Live action versions of manga and anime are generally regarded with weary annoyance, and rightfully so as theres things you can accomplish in animated form that simply do not translate at all into live action. The movie might be decent in it's own right, but the differences between it and the anime are likely to put off most Macross fans. Secondly, a lot of people at Macrossworld don't like Robotech, for various reasons. First, imagine you're an artist, and you creater comic, or piece of artwork. But you needed to borrow a friend's markers to finish it. In return, you allow that friend to show off that piece of artwork, and only that piece of artwork., and maybe sell some merchandise based on that artwork and that artwork alone. Now imagine your friend sells those rights to a friend of his, same rights that you gave your friend initially. They chop up the artwork, remove your name from it, and combine it with a couple pieces of artwork your friend made, and call it a brand new product. Here's the kicker, you get to become even more famous and do even more artwork, and you start spreading it around, but when you get to your friend's friend's neighborhood, he sends lawyers after you telling you to stop, because the guy claims he owns your artwork. Fun, eh? So, for reasons of artistic integity, some people don't like Robotech. Lots of people think Harmony Gold uses unethical business tactics beyond what most companies get away with, and for that reason they don't like Robotech. Robotech is simplified and aimed at a younger audience than Macross, for that reason some don't like Robotech. Some people don't dislike Robotech at all, but they dislike Harmony Gold (hate the people, not the product mentality). For all these reasons, Robotech is not well accepted here. Just a belated heads-up for you. There are some Robotech fans here, but still you'll want to keep RT threads to the Other Sci-fi section and expect some less than warm responses. To the topic at hand, well I'm simply not interested in Robotech. I might check it out, but I'd be more upset than pleased to see them using Macross designs or story elements, for reasons best left to the legal debate thread. I'm also not a fan of trying to make a live action version of an animated story, for reasons I've stated above, but I'm willing to extrapolate on if asked. I'd still be less than enthusiastic over a live action Macross movie, I'd prefere a new animated Macross movie, for the same reasons given above. I'd be willing to give either a Robotech or a Macross live action film a chance, but I would not hold high hopes of a pleasant experience, and if previews, trailers, and news on the creative staff behind it lead me to believe my fears of such a film were warranted, then I'd probably wait for video release, or at least the cheap theatres.

I still don't buy the whole 'DYRL? is now a movie within the tv series universe' thing, everything seems to point to that being oversimplification. I still think that when Kawamori said that "the real story of Space War I is somewhere between the movie and the tv series" he meant it. If we see a VF-1 show up in Macross Zero, for example, I'll be incredibly suprised if they don't use the movie designs.

I wasn't actually aware I was deconstructing a genre with the webcomic. It's just a silly little pieceI wrote back in highschool that a lot of people I've shown it to seemed to like. Why did I use something I wrote 7 years ago for the webcomic? A couple reasons. The first reason is, there's 4 year's worth of material already written, it just needs to be redrawn. I don't have to think of a new idea until that's done with. That frees me up to work on other things, wich brings me to the second reason. The new story I've been writing is being published. This new story is much more coherent, and has an actual theme and plot, as well as character developement and all that other fun stuff. I've already done a short piece for Otazine, as mentioned above, and I'll more than likely do a second. Depending on how well Otazine does I'll either continue publishing through that, or shop the idea around to companies like Antarctic Press, Radio Comics, or even some larger scale operations. By that time hopefully I'll have improved my drawing skills further, gotten a helluva lot faster, and improved my comic layouts as well s my use of word balloons and narration boxes. Right now my layouts are pretty simplistic. I'd like to get away from that by the time I have a full colour book on the shelves. However, as things go with the webcomic, I'm also trying to write in entirely new sections to the already existing story, and polish some parts up a bit here and there. As the opportunity presents itself in the original material, I'm also going to try and better develope some themes and ideas that, while already present in the old comic, aren't that well defined. We'll see how that goes, but that's mostly book two wich I won't get to for a while yet.

A sneak peak at some future Steampowered pages. Just because. Page 19 Page 20 I'm also planning to redesign the site in the not so distant future. I want to make the site itself more visually appealing. It's looking a bit too plain to my eyes.

Luckily, nostalgia allows past crazes(good or bad) to reemerge one or two decades later, sometimes in slightly different forms, so perhaps we're getting close to a point at which we will begin to see a new flow of Big Robot anime. heh? so what do you owe the massive popularity of evangelion, escaflowne and not to mention the endless stream of gundam and the other big robot anime? Its just a resurgance for nostalga sake... Not because its really making a comeback. But these shows have been bringing in lots of new fans, many of whom were still crapping their diapers during the 80's. -

You call that a goddess? psssh....puhleeze. You obviously haven't been around alot. How many cute girls do you know that carry around Transformers that aren't even out yet? -
Actually, Luke likes like a pretty nifty little figure if you remove that ghastly headgear. Still, I do prefere my toys to have articulation. I doubt I'd be inclined to 'collect the whole set' of a line like this. I might get the Vader, though. He can join Tochiro and my Catty&Co. figure on the bookshelf above my Alternators.

I don't think Lucas has to worry about making Star Wars a cashcow, it was from the moment the first film appeared in theatres. Lucas does what he wants, because he wants to. He could have made the prequels all about dancing Ewoks and there would be fans lined up to see all three movies. I'm not trying to defend the prequels here. I dislike a lot that was done in Phantom Menace. I liked most of AotC, but hated the poorly done love story. I'm sincerly hoping RotS is much better than the first two, but not getting my hopes up. But I'm not going to explain away the poor writing of the prequels as 'Lucas cashing in'. He already cashed in. He doesn't need to make the prequels crap simply to cash in. I think he's honestly making the films he wants to make, and the majority of us find the films Lucas wants to make are crap. -

Since my girlfriend does not read these boards I can safetly admit that that woman is a goddess in hot pants. Say, about Meister, is his upper face painted blue, or is that an actual transparent visor with a blue tint? If it is, that just plain rocks! -
I have to say the reason for this 'attitude' as you put it is because here at Macrossworld we have a very stable community. People tend to stay for longterm here, we get to know each other. Seeing the same topics brought up again and again, especially those were there are clearly designated places for them to be asked, can grate on some people. I don't tend to share that agrravation, but I can understand where it is coming from. Since I started coming here in 2002 or so, I've actually felt the attitude here was very welcoming and pleasant. As much as people complain about certain arguments that crop up over and over again, it's still a much more civil place than most message boards I've seen. Many boards actually share similar rules to this one, but when you break them over there the responses can be a lot less forgiving. Try joining the Penny-Arcade forums and showing off artwork or plugging your own website on the first day. They'll cuss you right off their forum and not feel any regret in not seeing you come back. Welcome to the boards Culverin, I hope you find the place as interesting and inviting as I do. In the future though, any questions you might consider common, such as asking about dates relating to Macross productions, toy releases, magazines and whatnot, names or basic technical questions about mecha, character names or backgrounds, or links between shows and movies, you might want to ask in the appropriate thread pinned at the top of this section. If in doubt as to whether your question belongs there, I'm sure no one will give you a hard time for erring on the side of caution. I also reccomend searching for topics you're interested in, as there is a wealth of information already covered in a lot of threads already existing. Also, anything relating not to Macross, but to Robotech, or involving questions about both Macross AND Robotech belong in the 'Other Sci-Fi' thread, most likely in one of the pinned discussions at the top of that section of the boards. Just thought I'd mention all that so you don't make another MW faux-pas.

People tend to forget that if Lucas really wanted to fill his pockets even more full of cash, he easily could without exherting as much effort as he has. I personally believe that somewhere along the way, Lucas' idea of Star Wars, and the public's idea of Star Wars went in different directions. I also think Lucas was a little greedy in that he wanted to handle his movies by himself, despite his known weakness at directing actors, and boring, by the book camera work. That's something I can understand though. I'm not a strong writer, but I'm still trying to write my own comic. I can draw, sure, but writing? Not my strong point. However, I haven't met anyone that I think could do all that better than me, and I'm not willing to hand it off to a stranger. -
Starfleet Command is more of a strategy/simulation game, where as the Armada series is straight RTS action. Basically, they took all the rules for the old Starfleet Battles game, and turned them into a videogame. You command up to three ships (though I usually stick with one, as I'm not a fan of the game's AI). The setting is an alternate version of the Star Trek reality where the Organian peace (a horrible plot contrivance from the original tv series that Paramount retconned out of Trek history along with everything else that took place before the movies) never lasted. The Organians dissapeared and it was back to business as usual. The movie era style ship designs that never actually appeared elsewhere are spectacular. It requires more thought to win battles, and more patience, than a typical RTS game. Though it can be set to realtime, realtime for the game is very, very slow. Cranking the time to the fastest setting gets you about RTS speed, but no time to make the important decisions you have to make, as you're not just picking a ship and clicking on an enemy for it to fight. You can pick any individual weapon to use, or use them all, and even set special settings like overloaded torpedos. I'm going to check out that Generations at War mod, that's the only way I'd want to play, as I can't stand the NextGen ship designs.
-
A short time playing this game and I wanted to break out my Starfleet Command CDs. If you like this little Flash game, you'd probably like the SFC series. Though I'm kinda put off by the use of NextGen ship designs in the third game. I much prefere the movie era ship designs.

I'm with Keith here, though you do manage to spoil the entire series for anyone who has not seen it yet, you're horribly misremembering things. Also, there is very little that is cliche about the end of Giant Robo. Heck, if you consider that Giant Robo was created by the man that started Giant Robots in anime, there's practically nothing cliche about Giant Robo.

It is terrible, this idea! Terrible! -
Some people are only swayed by fat guys with loud mouths that exaggerate everything to the extreme. So long as the right has Rush Limbaugh, the left needs Michael Moore to balance the loud fat guy thing out. Moore's funny at least.

If HasTak does make a different line for larger vehicles and jets, I do hope they keep them a little bit bigger than the alternators, even if they're smaller in scale. Starscream and friends should tower over the cars, at least a little.
