    SD VF-4 toys...

Nifty! I would love one of those! ... Still, I'd love a Yamato 1/48th perfect variable VF-4 even more.
  2. Spoken like a true Cynic... wait, why am I getting this bizzare Deja-vu sensation?
  3. The creative teams of two of my favourite shows, I certainly can't help but have high hopes for this. We'll see.
  4. I'm not even bothered too much by the wings, it's mainly the disc and the Christmas Tree light assortment. Heck, the lights all over the place are the worst part, get rid of those and the ship looks decent, if still not nearly as cool as just about any other Matsumoto ship design.
  5. I'm not. I don't want F'ed up sequals like so many other series have. Leave Mospeada alone. As for the Robotech thing. All this judgement from little source to go on........ Maybe they will finally tie Orguss into it........ Who knows at this point.......... I will probably check it out. I won't get all riled up about it since the show is not my cup of tea. You're probably right. I dunno, it's just difficult for me to look at Robotech and see anything other than 3 better series spliced together and edited in much the same way as Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, and Gigantor. Why would I watch any of those when I Mach Go Go, Gatchaman, and Tetsujin 28 are so much better? The idea of an American made sequel to the Americanized version of any of those just turns my stomach. (Take a look at Fred Ladd's ideas for "his" 'G3' Gigantor "sequel" and compare that to the new Tetsujin 28 Go series being distributed by Geneon). Rumour has it that Tatsunoko already plans to turn 'Shadow Force' into a MOSPEADA sequel, if this is really the case I'd rather see them try to make a good sequel, then have HG and friends turn that into their Shadow Force show, rather than see HG make Shadow Force, then have Tatsunoko try and shoehorn that into a MOSPEADA sequel. Grok? I suspect that if the creative team behind MOSPEADA worked on it, they might be able to do something good. I don't have as much faith in HG's creative talent. Maybe they'll prove me wrong. The reasoning behind all of this is my own clinging hope that some good will come of this show. I honestly do want them to make something I can enjoy out of this, whether it be in Robotech or MOSPEADA form.
  6. Well, it looks better than the 2520 design at least. I still think even with the disc it would look a whole lot better hand drawn instead of CGed. Make it tradtionally animated, and lose the disc (keep all the other changes, even!) and it would probably look excellent.
  7. I'm not keen on the name, and I'm kinda hoping that someone at Tatsunoko is doing the actual writing so it can better be turned into a MOSPEADA sequel, but I must say I'm interested. I'm not expecting any of the Macross Saga characters to show up, or if they do it will be with very different looking character designs, given the Tokyo Circuit Court's ruling on the ownership of the SDF Macross designs. I'm hoping Toynami's prices drop for their transformable toys, then I'll probably be interested in picking up merchandise for the new show. I'd actually like to see some MOSPEADA ship designs in toy or model kit form.
  8. I don't know who you are, magical comic book man, but thank you!
  9. I'm skeptical until we hear something from Big West. Harmony Gold has made too many claims that were either debunked or they backpeddled off of for me to take this news at face value. The thing is highly suspect, given the history here. I'm not dismissing this all outright, I'm simply taking it with a grain of salt. Spoken like a true cynic. I hold no such pretence that Big West loves me and will send me a Christmas card the moment the evil Harmony Grinch is foiled from keeping good old Santa West from paying a visit, but be reaslistic, some companies are better than others. Some companies deliver better products than others. Some companies treat the artistic integrity of their work better than others. Neither Big West nor Harmony Gold are without fault, but those who dislike HG and adore BW have reason. Look at how long it took to get a decent, uncut, subtitled copy of SDF Macross that wasn't stuck with two episodes of the cut up, edited episodes of Robotech, jacking up the price of the series by forcing you to get only two episodes a tape instead of 4. Look at the pricing and quality of the MPC compared to that of Yamato and Bandai's products. Look at the judgements of the Tokyo District Court cases and compare those to Harmony Gold's claims over the years. Again, I'm not saying Big West is a flawless, loving company. I'm simply saying Macross fans have had far less crap thrown at them from that side. I agree.
  10. Mari Ijima has played at two anime conventions I've been to. She really does put on an excellent performance. I really like hearing her non-Macross music as well. I need to pick up some of her albums some time when I'm not uber poor.
  11. I really dislike the new Yamato design. I understand why it had to be redesigned, I just with Matsumoto hadn't given into overzealous CGI cheese. I imagine it would look better drawn instead of done in CG. Matsumoto has never had a great relationship with CGI. Still, I bet the story will be solid, the character desgins I already approve of. I doubt this show will dissapoint.
  12. Given the Gundam Big Bang Project (I miss seeing those commercials) and the Macross 20th Anniversary, I find it difficult to believe this statement. That doesn't mean I believe Big West is going to do anything for the DYRL? 20th anniversary, it's looking pretty bleak right now. Still, it'd be incredibly nice. I'm looking forward to the Macross Panel at Otakon. It'd be a real shame if the east coast's biggest anime convention decided to pass up showing DYRL? on the 20th anniversary of the event. I'd love it if they show both DYRL? and the Plus movie on the min screen.
  13. Im not so sure about that, lest we forget the Gundam Big Bang Project celebrating 20 years of Gundam. Id like to see a DYRL rerelease, but i thikn it will come and go as Macross has a habit of not really promoting itself as much as Gundam. Now DYRL at Otakon on the big screen.....there is a good idea..... In 1999 Otakon showed DYRL? on the main events screen. That was great. Same year Mari Ijima did her concert there.
  14. Hurin, I was just trying to point out why I hold the views I do. ewilen almost no movies, tv series, or OVAs, tell you everything about a story before it even begins. Even in SDF Macross you don't find out about the Protoculture and the genetic simularities between mankind and the Zentradi until late in the show. A lot of the stuff I pointed out was cleared up right at the beginning of DYRL? while Hikaru and Minmay were trapped together. Or befope that , even, with Minmay's speech between 'My Boyfriend's a Pilot' and Shao Pai Long'. Agent ONE I agree with ewilen's take on that, it's interesting to see a complete retelling instead of a cropped down version of the original story. Of course, this depends on how good of a retelling it is. I think DYRL? is an excellent example. The Escaflowne movie on the other hand...
  15. The knife isn't always there, it comes out for ramming another ship, space station, planet. I believe it was similar for the original Arcadia.
  16. Isn't it the same as the 'Arcadia of My Youth' Arcadia?
  17. It could be argued that those choosing the tv series are choosing quantity over quality. Except that we're arguing a general lack of quality in DYRL in everything except the visuals. You have a general lack of character development in DYRL (although that seems to work in Minmei's favor), and a plot that's as bastardized from SDF Macross as Robotech is. Yes, the Valkyries do look pretty in DYRL, but Macross was always supposed to be more than flashy space battle scenes. I disagree, and I've stated that since the beginning. I believe the character developement and handling of the love triangle between Misa, Minmay, and Hikaru to be better in DYRL? than in the tv series. More time for character developement does not always equate to better character developement. A common thought amongst Macross fans is that the character developement in the series MUST be better simply because the series is longer than the movie. I challenge that notion.
  18. The Varuta Valkyries were changed to such an extent that they only bare a general simularity.
  19. I should point out that I know several people that got into Macross with DYRL? as their first exposure. They loved it and wheren't at all confused.
  20. It was not directed at anyone in particular. However, my rebuttal. Unimportant other than that they are a race of alien giants who seem to have attacked Earth. That's really all you need to know at the beginning of the movie, and it is explained in the movie. Later, the movie explains that there are two groups of giants, one all men and one all women. Even further along into the movie, it is explained that these two races were created by another race that also tampered with life on Earth. All of it clearly explained in the movie. It becomes clear soon enough that Earth was not their target, but it got caught up in a battle between the two groups of alien Giants. This is pointed out in the movie. I forget if the Macross' origins are ever explained in the movie, but the fact of the matter is that the origin of the Macross is unimportant to the plot of the movie. It is an Earth ship, apparently the only one to have escaped the bombardment of Earth. Why it was away from Earth is also unimportant to the story. It could be on it's way back to Earth after a failed military campaign against the giants, only to find Earth had been destroyed in their absense for all it matters. There could have been many Earthships like it, maybe it was the Flagship, it does not matter. All that matters is that it's an Earth military vessel on it's way back home. You mean the gas giant with the huge red spot? See my reply to why we have a spaceship. It's obvious that the Macross is on it's way back to Earth, this is even stated in the dialogue right towards the beginning of the movie. What's warp speed? What's hyperspace? When you see the Zentradi declaring a fold operation, and then warping to another desitionation, it should be obvious. I still feel that the Hikaru, Misa, Minmay love triangle is handled much better in the movie. If your friends did not understand in the movie, it is unlikely that they'd understand it in the series.
  21. Tell us all exactly what would be confusing about DYRL? without having seen the TV series first? I see lots of people tossing that idea around, but not backing up exactly why it would be confusing. Sure, a lot of little background details, and the developement of secondary and tertiary characters is cut out, but it seems to me that nothing important to the main situation, or Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay's story is left unanswered by the movie. I took the "well, it's shorter, and missing things, so it must be confusing to those who haven't seen the tv series!" idea for granted myself, but the more I think about it, the less I believe it.
  22. It could be argued that those choosing the tv series are choosing quantity over quality.
  23. Amano did the character designs officially for Final Fantasy I-VI and IX. However, there's reason to believe that Square isn't entirely honest about Amano's involvement in all of the Final Fantasy games. Officially, Nomura did the character designs for FF VII, VIII, and X. Yet there's a huge difference in the designs between VII and all the later games. There's also Amano artwork for VII that is 'officially' reported as being done after the fact as promotional artwork only. Then there's the fact that FF IX's characters were designed well before Amano was brought in on the project. I wish I still had the link, but the website I originally found the artwork at has long since closed it's doors. A good long while before FF IX was released, or Amano was brought on board, there was artwork of several key characters from the game. Afterwards, Amano was brought on board and "designed" the characters...characters that had already been designed. Funny, that. Still, whether or not Amano designed the characters, the actual ingame designs we see were done by someone else. The same person that turned all of Amano's designs from the previous games into their sprite forms. I forget his name at the moment, but I rather love his work and think he, not Nomura, should be handling most of the FF design work for the main series. At the very least, he should have handled the online FFXI. It's my belief that Amano did not design the FF IX characters, his involvement was entirely to promote the game with his name attached, since at the time a lot of people were less than happy with Nomura's designs. I also believe it's entirely possible that the opposite situation occured with FF VII, that Amano designed the characters, Nomura redid them into sprite form, but Nomura was touted as the designer in light of Amnano's decision to leave Square, and Square wanted to make their new head character designer look as good as possible. Unlike the FFIX situation, there's no real proof of this happening. Just a possibility given that we did not hear of Amano leaving Square until after FF VII was already getting lots of attention.
  24. It's interesting to see these screenshots. Given what we know about the end of Final Fantasy VII, we can only assume that there's a lot of flashbacks to events that took place before and/or during the game's story.
