  1. Exactly, so it's safe to conclude that comparing Hikaru's skill to later Valk pilots is difficult as their equipment and tactics might have improved. The only way to compare is to see how they function in their own era. As Hikaru lived through SW1 while pilots like DD Ivanov, Roy Focker, Guld Boa Bowmen, Michel Blanc and Nora Polianski got killed. Allowing old Hikky to gather kills while they all got disqualified for the top ratings due to being dead ( which is arguably worse then losing a couple of Valks). So the remaining contestants for spot 3 after M&M are Hikaru, Gamlin, Isamu and Alto/Ozma. As Hikaru both outranks and has higher kill scores (on screen and assumed from his in universe combat time) he is clearly humber 3
  2. English and German planes took turns in superiority depending on which model came available at any given time. Arguably the best fighter in Wo I was the Fokker D.VII. Numerical superiority did not affect Richterhoffen as he flew with an elite squadron and usually had local air superiority. Richterhoffen was the best marksman of his contemporaries. Planes were so primitive that pilot skill was secondary to being a good shot. Boelcke was the key tactician who developed fighter tactics, Richterhofen build on those tactics. Irony is that both died by breaking the rules they had help develop. Also means there are a lot more people to shoot you down aswell. In WO2 piloting skills mattered more then in WO1 due to the greater capabilities of aircraft. This said the original argument was that the top aces generally don't die in combat. I checked up some info and it would seem that Richthofen was the first and last top scoring ace in any conflict to die in combat. Now we can return to our regular programming of discussing Hikaru's ( presumed lack of ) skill
  3. In the episode 23 where Kaifun kisses Minmey Hikara takes on and kills 13 Zentran pods in short succesion, the skills are there if you wish to see them. Difference is that SDFM doesnt have the animation that later series have. As for aces not dying often in combat. It's simple statistics. Only way to get those high kill numbers is by not getting killed yourself. Reckless pilots did not live long enough to reach top spots. The US statistics are a bit skewed due to the practise of turning experienced pilots into instructors. The Red Barons is one of the aces who died. While very famous he was not an exceptional pilot and later aces raked up much higher kill numbers. He was a great shot though but we all know what happens to snipers...
  4. The Japanse use the English pronounced version of Fokker? In Dutch (and German) you would pronounce the "o" in Fokker (and Focker for that matter) the way you would pronounce "soccer" in English. A double consonant indicates the previous vowel sound be short. As for the nationalities of the survivors of Space war 1. It's very hard to tell. The grand cannons were UN instalations and the crews/builders could come from any associated nation. Same with the moonbase that survived (where the SDF-2/Megaroad-1 was being constructed). Only hard data I've seen is that the number of human survivors was less then 1% of the world population. In DYRL fightoperations are done in English but that again doesn't say much about the nationalities.
  5. I feel Hikaru is heavily underestimated. If we are talking combat pilots then Hikaru is the only pilot thats a match for M&M. Hikaru is both an established stuntpilot in a flying circus and amateur aerobatics champion before he became a fighter pilot. That alone is enough to call him an expert pilot. Kawamori is a airplane fanatic and he knows his aviation history. Losing a plane shouldn't affect ranking. For example: histories greatest ace Eric Hartman lost 14 planes while getting 352 confirmed kills. In general top aces rarely die in combat, but most of them have lost several planes during their carreers. Kawamori is a airplane fanatic and he knows his aviation history. I'm curious about the following SDFM similarities to the real world: 3 Japanse aces who flew together during WO2: Hiroyoshi Nishizawa, Saburo Sakai and Toshio Ohta. Nishizawa was a introvert gaunt man who did not seem like a fighter pilot at all but who considered near invicible in his Zero and performed extreme maneuvers with his plane, Sakai survived the war and questioned it's cause. Strove for peace after the war and sought out and made friends with allied airmen, Otha was an outgoing man who was more at home in a nightclub then at an airbase. Died early in the war. Sounds a lot like Vermilion group And then there was "Lilya", a beautiful Russian female ace whose nickname came from the white Lily that was reportedly painted on her fighter. Was killed in action after being singled out by the Germans. Took 8 Bf109s to kill her. Was a feared specialist in dog-fighting and enemy fighters tended to avoid her when recognised. Milia hunting down Max an ironic twist on this event?
  6. "Watashi no uta wo kike! Booommmbbbaaa!! That one is pretty much burned in my memory. Didn't expect to hear it in MoHS. Pleasant surprise
  7. Hush you Rock and Roll and Jets are serious bussiness, so a guy who flies a Red jet while jamming a guitar is very serious bussines!
  8. As a fictional character Basara can mean any number of things to different people. You state that you see him as a hippie that endangers the lives of soldiers and himself and his actions only work through the plot. Which is fine off course, as everyones interpretations are their own. However you wrongfully assume that all Basara fans share your view of him and see that same hippie and support his actions. The accusation that the fans don't think about his actions and by association condone the actions of megalomanics and dictators is both offensive and smells of a lack of critical thinking on your own part. The singular focus Basara displays is an a common character trait in people who have made critical breakthoughs in science, medicine, exploration, sports, music and politics, some would even say it's a neccesity.
  9. Finished Haruhi Suzumiya. Absolutly fantastic series and I'll rewatch it soon again. So many anime references, homages and little plot details. Don't have the time on any given day to watch 14 anime episodes in a row unfortunatly . Yea, there are rumours . New types march issue should contain more info, but many fans feels it's a hoax to sell more copies. The last episode of the manga is due to arive in April. Hopefully that will create the incentive for the anime. Surprising that KyoAni haven't jumped on the succes of this series more.
  10. If BW has merchandising rights then that would explains HGs preferance fot using Mospeada only for their current projects I guess. Can't be much love between those two.
  11. Looks like the characters are being positioned for the final shoot-em-up. Wonder who will end up killing eachother.
  12. If you want a Toyota in Europe with limited off road capability and space then the options are few: Toyota RAV4 SUV/limited off road Toyota Land Cruiser aka a Tank Toyota Hilux (more of a pick up) or Subaru which is a partner of Toyota Subaru Forrester (4x4) Subaru Outback (station wagon) Nota that some Toyotas types are build in Europe or Turkey and have more QC issues then the Japanese versions. Non of these cars are very cheap but all are very reliable. If you want good price/quality check out Skoda, Volkswagen technology without the status. American cars are quite cheap now due to the good exchange rate but unless you know people, repairs and maintenace are a killer.
  13. I remeber that thread seems RT was broadcasted on American television on Okinawa and some Japanese local fans picked it up there.
  14. Halfway through "The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya". Makes me want to be 16 again .
  15. HG claims to have an international (ie worldwide) license for the merchandising of SDFM. Whether or not they have RT broadcasted here doesn't matter. But I doubt HG is a factor for not being able to get Yamato parts in Europe. Most likely the market over here is to small for Yamato to care.
  16. Interesting points. Main difference between Kaifun and Basara for me is that Basara doesn't like the concept of fighting and the military but doesn't blame soldiers individually, while Kaifun is rude to individuals like Hikaru and Misa. Also Basara isn't a hypocrite and goes out to do as he preaches. Main difference between Basara and the other Macross singers like Minmey, Ranka and Sheryl is that Basara lives for his music and nothing else (art pour l'art) while the others are stars. They have a responsiblity to their fans while Basara does not. A bit like comparing Bob Dylan versus Beyonce/Shakira/Winehouse and co. Very insightful discussion about Basara's role, thanks. As for the non amicable part. Basara doesn't waste time with small talk but he is understanding of others and shows kindness. Afaik he is never rude or unpleasant to people unless they want or expect him to do something he doesn't agree with or simply rules in general. He doesn't fake interest as that is impossible for a character that is as sincere and upfront as he is. I find that refreshing characteristics. If people feel like losers around him, isn't that a hell of their own making?
  17. Can't remember that much of 0080 except the tragic story and Mikimotos character designs which were great. Strange that the 2 good OVAs had Macross involvement with Kawamori doing mecha design for 0083. Clearly that is the reason why 8th MS failed
  18. Has anyone found an affordable online vendor for Macross Ace? No local book stores carry it, and Amazon.jp asks 3800yen shipping for a 500 yen manga...I don't mind paying for shipping but a 800% fee is a bit much.
  19. Always good to see more Mac 7 fans. Never understood the Basara hate. I can imagine Mac 7 haters dislike him for being a musician fighter pilot with little background. Oddly, M7 fans don't like him much either. I see a free spirited pacifist with an obession for music with no regard for being punctual but not a jerk. In comparison to the other male lead characters I'd say Isamu and Alto are far bigger jerks but they don'' seem to generate the hate Basara does
  20. Your right, it's just like the first part of the movie is missing. It was the first thing a friend asked when I loaned him my clash of the bionoids - why is that ship in space?- About Misa: I don't think the character is shallow at all. My guess would be that the writers wanted a clear resolution of the triangle for the part of the movie audience who had not seen SDFM. So they made Minmey weaker while leaving Misa intact. For me movie Misa would still win over SDFM Minmey just with less difference. (Wonder if this will happen in the Frontier movie).
  21. Your absolutly right there. UC is more of a war story/space opera while the Alternate stuff is closer to super robot shows. For me it's not a problem as the alternate status removes the responsebility to be true to the original. I would be furious Sunrise/Bandai placed it the alternate stuff in the UC continuity. I stand corrected, wasn't aware that the original series was dubbed in the US. In the Netherlands we had English dubbed imports in the stores of Wing, it's movie and Chars counterattack and later Seed, never seen any UC. I saw most of the UC stuff from HongKong dubs in the early nineties (which didnt really help understanding the story I can tell you ). As for the multiple gundams. I'm sure Bandai executives regret not having presured Tomino to flood UC with more Gundams. The Japanse demand for hero mechs must have limited their ability to capitalise on the early bit of the franchise. I wonder how much influence a director has these days on the inclusion of the number of mecha... (thats me being cynical).
  22. Gorgeous paintjob and the canopy looks amazing.
  23. I don't think DYRL is completly fair to Minmey. Let me explain: Friendship is the foundation of Hikaru's and Minmeys relationship in SDFM. Both Minmey and Misa need Hikaru but in a different way. Hikaru is Minmeys friend and confidant. She isn't looking for a lover but an equal she can trust and fall back on when things get tough. In the end I think that is why Minmey can let go of Hikaru in SFDM. Even with Misa as Hikaru's love interest she will still have the most important part of their relationship: their friendship. Hikaru is physcially attracted to Minmay(makes me wonder of he ever took a good look at Misa -Hello-) and feels a kind of big brother like need to protect her. He wants to be needed -which shows his own insecurity- but Minmey is way to independant and selfcentered to truely need him. Idolsinger Minmey can have pretty much any guy she likes (plus a whole fleet of Zentradi who would die for her). She wants a true friend. This element goes missing in DYRL as the time Minmey and Hikaru have together is too short and Minmey is already a star so Hikaru is never her equal. Misa is different. She has built a wall around herself to keep people away. Misa acts the tough carreer officer routine but is very insecure as a private person. Hikaru just goes straight through Misa's defences with his sincerity. If she messes up or does something he doesn't like he will tell her off no matter if she is a superior officer or not. Only Global, Claudia and Hikaru ever get to see the real Misa. Hikaru is the only guy she can reach out to. In both SDFM and DYRL you can see that their mutual understanding and respect grows. Both are so insecure and it's touching to see them realise: -Oh, he/she really likes me- . I agree with VTF1s reading of the scene where Minmey runs of. DYRL Misa easily wins over Minmey. SDFM's Minmey is far more noble then her movie counterpart, altough I'm firmly in the Misa camp. Still a relationship between an insecure and an indepandant person can work as we saw with Claudia and Roy(Claudia did reach a level of understanding Roy that made it bearable for her, I don't see Hikara achieve that with Minmey). I guess it comes down to person preferance what type of person you like as both women have their fare share of fans.
  24. Robotech and Wing both had english dubs and DVDs were rather easy to get compared to Macross and UC Gundam. Add the preference of the casual/mainstream viewer for dubs and it eems like a safe bet that Wing viewers would prefer RT. Wing while not being particuarly good (at least that's what I remember) it did pull in fans to gundam and helped anime gain mainstream acceptance in the late 90s.
  25. That's reasuring to hear. And I'll be sure to check it out. I mean I actually enjoyed Gundam Seed Destiny ( or should I say Gundam SOAP ?) so opinions differ. Just meant my previous remark more as a comparison between Turn A and Victory. But I still plan to watch all the remaining GD stuff out there. As for depressing I count movies like 12 Monkeys, About Smidt and 1 hour Photo amonst my favourites and I still haven't had to resort to a razorblade for anything else then shaving
