Well theres always a plus alpha if it's done well so I daresay that is indeed correct. Regardless, I still think my main point (the business relationship and the unlikeliness of its inclusion having anything to do with Ranka's character development) still stands.

Apologies in advance for bringing real life into the conversation, but the inclusion of Tezuka material was most likely the result of a business deal and little else. Tezuka Productions have had the rights to certain Frontier merchandise for years now and are the main financial backers behind the 'Oshare Macross' chain of exhibits/temporary stores, which are still going strong (with the latest being held in Kyoto right now, and having sold out of its newest items in less than two days). This is also why the first version of Macross the Museum and the 1-1 valkyrie cockpit were held at the Tezuka Museum - resulting in fans having to trek down a fair chunk of japan to see it but drumming up some newer brand awareness for Tezuka in the process. I'm sure Kawamori grew up with Atom in the 60's, but knowing the business relationship thats there, public, and well-established, I wouldn't read the appearance of Atom and Blackjack in Wings of Farewell as any sort of deep comment on Ranka's psyche. (For more business shenanigans, theres also the way that during Ranka's performance in Akiba Deep, the Aquarion figure was changed to a chogokin valk for the home release of the movie - since that was what was going to be on store shelves at that time - reality is constantly affecting anime.) Then again, DYRL had FULLY naked Minmei and a love hotel joke, while SDFMTV has Hikaru in a lingerie store, Fokker perving on Minmei's butt, and a bikini segment in the Miss Macross Contest. The extremes have changed, yes, and I can appreciate the conundrum that being a parent puts you in - you love something so you naturally want to be able to share it with your kids. That's only normal! But might there not be a little rose-tinted viewing of the past going on here? Then again, for context, in the same decade kids in Japan were watching heads explode in Fist of the North Star TV, and Ryo Saeba talking about sexy times in every episode of City Hunter. And this was tame compared to some of the early Lupin the 3rd stuff a decade earlier. So, for Japanese audiences at least, perhaps standards have changed quite that much after all. As far as the overall topic goes, I'm no fan of shipping wars, but the movies at least made BOTH Sheryl AND Ranka winners! Sheryl was the 'winner' when it came to romance, but ended up in a coma and with potentially no singing voice when/if she recovers. Ranka, on the other hand, 'wins' in music since she becomes the main idol in the galaxy as a result. Neither character could ever have both - by it's very definition, being an 'idol' means you cannot have a successful romance/relationship - but at least this way each of character 'wins' at something.

Thank you for checking! It looks like they updated the site with this news after midnight (ie, after I checked). It looks like the news is also only displayed if you set the app to Japanese. Even though Kadokawa claims it to be international, the English version of the app does not have the same news post. I tried confirming with Kadokawa and all they could say was that 'most' titles would be available internationally.

This would most likely only affect the weekly/monthly chapters. Yamato 2199, for example, still gets tankobons physically published/released when there's enough content accumulate digitally.

Just FYI, its already been out for a month. And I WISH it had as much depth as you've just described. It's basically just static card management leading to fights against bosses. There are 'raid bosses' but nothing as complex as PvP or multiplayer. Some nice art though.

Well, the Max Factory figure was on display at Anime Japan this weekend. Again. With no solid release date …^^; Theres also a SEVENTH (yeeeesh!) round of ichiban kuji in the works which means we should see some more ichiban kuji figures announced in the upcoming weeks :-)

But.. it isn't a Macross Frontier design. Its a Macross 30 design ^^; Well, Anime Japan isn't a toy/hobby event. Its an anime event so no-one was looking for/expecting the YF-30 to be there, imo. It was kind of snuck in there next to be BIG Macross thing which was the Macross Frontier Pachislot 2 machines (with newly animated Frontier footage). As Save and I took plenty of pics, we will probably put them up on the front page soon. Nope. No news on pricing/type/release date yet.

Spotted by forum user Peter at the Comic Walker booth at Anime Japan today - a Macross the First sketch by Haruhiko Mikimoto. Comic Walker is a new digital manga service by Kadokawa that includes manga such as Yamato 2199 and Gundam the Origin. Could this mean that Macross the First is returning in digital form? A search for it at the newly launched Comic Walker site comes up with no hits at this point, but it may be worth keeping an eye on the service in the future just in case.

Oshare Macross starts in Kyoto tomorrow and features this new, more traditionally themed Japanese art.

To kick things off ... I thought that the Umaibo reference was a fun little shout out to both DYRL and the upcoming MF BD Box set ;-)

Macross Card Fighter is a terrible game. But the new commercial for it features the first 2D valkyries since...M7? Thought it would be nice to have a thread for any comments/discussion about the animation in the commercial below.

An unbelievably cool trailer for an admittedly poor game. http://www.macrossworld.com/6294/macross-card-fighter-tv-cm/

2D valkyries... how long has it been? This CM is AWESOME! http://www.macrossworld.com/6294/macross-card-fighter-tv-cm/

Macross Frontier Movies BD Boxset WITH ENGLISH SUBS!
Tochiro replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
Wow...I was going to make a comment here but Renato has pretty much summed up all my points perfectly. No-one is kidding themselves here. Japanese anime IS expensive. That's a fact. But the other fact is that anime is also a niche market, with Macross being a niche market within a niche market. The entire business model is based upon what the limited number of fans of a particular niche in Japan are willing to pay to support the product/franchise. If it was priced completely out of their range then the product wouldn't sell (and yes, limited availability/print runs drives demand up further as well). The unfortunate fact of the matter is that media content producers have doubled down on their respective niche markets. The content isnt meant for, nor will it be embraced by, a wider market domestically. As for countries outside of Japan the trend, in the US in particular, towards people not buying physical media, coupled with the anime crash of the mid-late 2000's has burned/scared off a lot of Japanese publishers. The local niche market is one they can rely on, so content and pricing is geared towards the domestic market. For what its worth, the cost of Japanese media has actually DECREASED in the case of Macross. In the case of Frontier it has remained rather stable or else decreased. Buying the (special editions) of the movies separately would have totaled 17640yen (7140+10500). Without Eng. subs. Discounts would have knocked 1500yen or so off that, bringing it to - approx. the same price as the re-release. The tv series was originally 6000-7000 yen per disc for 9 discs! Many fans paid this price for it (myself included). the re-release is a mere 25,000yen. Quite a reduction! TL;DR - items are priced for their markets. Markets are different. When we buy things from markets that are not meant for our own, theres no choice other than to play by their rules. MORE IMPORTANTLY... thank you for listening to the podcast! Feel free to tell you friends and fellow fans about us!- 287 replies
