I think the 1/72 kit ghosts are just as detailed (if not more), but the kit details are much finer, and the panel lines are typical of the Bandai valk kits, so they don't show up well without some panel lining, or a wash. The 1/60 set are all pre-painted, and the details pop much more because they're not quite so finely engraved. I think they do have a couple things the kits don't though, like the clear lens tips on the link antennas under the nose.

Arcadia 1/60 VF-19 Custom Nekki Basara Special with Sound Booster

Arcadia should've sprung for redesigned ankles. Then everyone would be falling all over themselves to get the new version. -
Aircraft Super Thread Mk.VII
Chronocidal replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I've actually talked to a few pilots of F-18s, and yeah, they hate the JSF having such a gimpy gun. They love having the gun just for strafing targets of opportunity during close air support scenarios. I'm kinda wondering if the F-35 is going to wind up similar to the F-111. Honestly, the entire program may as well be one giant technology demonstrator. The thing is so crammed full of leading edge tech, a lot of it has probably never seen the light of day on a testbed, let alone being put in a production aircraft. Which makes me really look forward to whatever the next plane they come up with is, because it'll get to benefit from all the lessons learned on the F-35. -
Given the massive scale of the SW universe, and how much of it was actually part of the Republic/Empire, compared with most others like Trek and B5, you can assume that hyperdrive is much faster than many other types of sci-fi travel. B5 probably is closest but I don't recall the scale of how far apart planets in that show were. But consider Voyager (if you can stomach it) taking 70 years to cross the galaxy back to Federation space, which wasn't even a complete crossing. Granted, a lot of the "common" knowledge about the layout of the SW universe is based on EU material that may be defunct, but Tatooine was always pictured as being in the "outer rim," while things like Coruscant were referred to as the "galactic core." If you're going to make that journey within a movie, then yes, hyperdrive has to be a helluva lot faster than warp drive. One of the interesting things I remember reading as well (and don't know if it applies, since EU and all that), was that SW hyperspace was actually almost exactly like B5. SW just never explored the concept of ships jumping without navicomputers (or astromech droids), which is essentially what the larger ships in B5 had. The smaller ships had to rely on the gates as navigational beacons, or they'd be lost entirely.

Arcadia 1/60 Perfect Transformation VF-0D for 2015
Chronocidal replied to Dark_Ghost's topic in Toys
Actually, I was surprised by how similar this new one looks to the original. I think they just tweaked the CAD slightly for this new version, because all the parts involved in the transformation mechanism look almost identical. -
Arcadia 1/60 VF-19 Custom Nekki Basara Special with Sound Booster

The semi-sad part? Only the speaker pod has that bendy-joint in the middle, meaning it's the only VF-19 gunpod that actually sits level. -
Actually have to agree (slightly).. might give it that classic "Streak Eagle" vibe. Actually, thanks, I always wondered how to spell the noises I make when I get Bandai'd.

Mmk, thanks for the clarification, I probably need to actually check out the series/movies/everything at some point. Never saw Starblazers, and never really learned about the series until the past few years.

I may be remembering wrong, but didn't the Japanese Yamato live action movie only do so-so? It looked really well done, but I wonder if that may have been due to just general lack of interest in adapting it that way. Assuming that's true, I'm curious what the thinking behind a Starblazers version is. If the original story retold to its original target audience didn't do so well, what makes them think an adaptation of an adaptation for a foreign audience would do well? Or maybe Starblazers actually did better in America than Yamato in Japan? I don't know. Maybe they're banking on American nostalgia being a stronger pull... they might not be wrong about that.

It's Bandai applying TWO LAYERS of unnecessary paint. It was discussed a while back in here, but those lighter gray panels are actually covering black... which is covering the naturally matching dark gray plastic used on the rest of the plane. Yep.. they screwed up the masking, and painted something that didn't need to be painted, then tried to cover it up by painting over it again with a third color that didn't match.

I think the bigger question with Endor would be, "What dimwit thought it was a great idea to send down legions of troops in shiny white armor to a forest environment?" Granted.. they probably didn't think they would need to be fighting there at all, but still. I can personally say, I made extensive use of that particular problem on the old Battlefront games.. and friends I was playing against kept asking how I was sniping half the opposite team on the Endor maps..

Honestly.. I think I kinda like the YF-30 better with no tails. It just looks better balanced, somehow, without those weak flappy looking things sticking out. Seriously, redesign the outer wing segments with tip tails like the MAXL, I could care less if the other tails even exist.

I thought in previous pics you could see the eyes are still the same individual lenses, just buried in that black background? Giving them peripheral vision might make sense, but I don't think it actually does.

Ouch, that really bites. But yeah.. I directly blame that idiotic twist lock for that kind of breakage, because there is no reason for it, and all it does is directly stress the thigh swivel. Well, I guess that's one more person who would benefit from a redesigned knee/thigh joint.. I just wish Bandai hadn't gone so stupidly over-zealous with the glue, because getting the lower leg apart to put any kind of fix in place has a pretty good chance of entirely destroying the lower leg in the process. It wasn't enough that they screwed the thing together.. they screwed it, glued it, and then glued panels over the main seams to even get it apart. I can't even begin to imagine how to fix the knee joint.. it's just an overcomplicated mess of parts to fix, and you're more likely to break it worse in the process than achieve anything.

Sorry I keep getting distracted by real life, but I do have a design in mind to replace those parts (both upper and lower), I just haven't been able to actually take the measurements to start working yet. I'm also going to need to get my own printer working at max performance before I can make anything so intricate to test with.

Yeah, if anything, just never put any stress on the knee joint. That same looseness was what led me to take apart mine, and the knee crumbled into a dozen pieces.

Or, you know, you could always deploy the missile box with the gun still attached, and use it as a turret.

It depends on whether you mean that the head appears angled, or just off center. I haven't seen a case where the head leans at an angle to one side or another, so I can't really offer any advice there. If the head just looks like it is shifted sideways though, that might be an easy fix. The way the head is mounted gives it a little room to slide from side to side. You might be able to just (very) carefully slide the head sideways on its mount, without disassembling anything. Just be very careful and gentle with it, since I'm not sure if this sideways motion is a just a flaw on mine. It might not want to budge, so don't force it. I'll try to take a look later to see where exactly the sliding motion happens, but I think it is between the head and the neck pivot.

Looks very nice with the correct colors! Bravo! I'm enjoying the YF-30 in general, but I must admit, the tail design really drags this one down for me. It's beautifully engineered and painted (backwards text labels notwithstanding.. ), but the tails feel like a horrible afterthought to the rest of the design... I'm actually tempted to make some wider tails that actually integrate into the wing, and don't look so incredibly flimsy. The way they can just attach and detach easily makes me think that they'll lose any existing tension around their pivot points over time, and just fall over.

See, if I ever got a set of gold-plated Enterprise models from Star Trek? I'd mount that right alongside them on my wall, just to see if people noticed it.

Arcadia 1/60 Perfect Transformation VF-0D for 2015
Chronocidal replied to Dark_Ghost's topic in Toys
Possibly dumb question.. did the 0D actually have the kites on both wings, or is that just a prototype flub? -
I've definitely considered painting over the yellow stripes on a 19S before, but always figured I would actually strip the yellow off first. Also, while it doesn't cover all of the stripe markings, the 19s came with backup stickers for some of the major markings. You could use the sticker sheet as a guide to mask off some of the markings for spraying.

Makes me incredibly glad I picked up those dual DVD packs of the special editions before the blurays came out. I think, short of a laser disc, those are the only release of the original versions in a digital format. I always thought those editions were based on the old THX re-master from before the special editions came out, but the quality on Ep IV is still pretty bad.
