  1. I would say that is very likely. Their actual suits being full body leotards, with some thin metal exoskeleton.

I was initially turned off by the "magical suits" the singers are wearing in the series, but while contemplating them I've come up with an in-universe explanation that makes them plausible (aside from the lack of a helmet, but that's forgivable - we've gotta see their faces in their big introduction after all).

The outfits appear to be a next generation type of EX-Gear (able to perform superhuman acrobatic leaps, etc, sustained high G maneuvers, and protection from falling concrete), with the miniaturized anti-gravity mechanism (from the boomerangs, used for hovering, anime leaps and so on).

Despite the implied titillation, it's pretty much a given that they're using the same holographic emitters Sheryl used over her concert bodysuit (or Minmei and Hikaru used in the shop in DYRL), and there appears to be a Fold Wave (I believe that's what I hear them saying repeatedly) emitter amplifying their singing (the episode pretty much indicates that more than a few people naturally produce them like Ranka did). And if they're using Fold Waves, it's a short skip and a hop to Fold Barriers (which can explain away the aforementioned lack of a helmet and negigible effects from blast waves and so on).

An alternative explanation for the visual and auditory effects would be the SES system from M7 sound and holographic emitters used in the Sound Force Valkyries.

  2. look at the products sold here:

    http://search-fn.p-bandai.jp/?lang=ja&page=1&q=&C1=c000702

I believe its mostly targeted at japanese young women. And I have attended several Oshare Macross events and saw that it was mostly japanese young women spending huge amounts of money for high end products.

I have been to several concerts and saw that attendance was about 50% women. I have seen many women buying manga cds and dvds and blurays in denden town and various events.

I have not, however seen many young women buying valkyrie toys, that was mostly older men.

At the talkshows, Kawamori mentioned that they were surprised by the amount of product that young women were buying.

I'll be very interested in any data that shows that the japanese young women actually purchased more Frontier and Delta merchandises (concerts, manga, cd's, dvd's, valks, etc) and stuff.

  3. They showed exactly why in that episode. The forcefield and antigrav tech is very power hungry. They run out of power quickly. Where wings provide lift with low energy. You can even shut off the engines and glide if you have wings.

The boomerang technology seems too advanced for the Macross universe, unless there has been some rapid breakthoughths in miniturization since Frontier.

As someone mentioned during the Podcast, why need Valks (apart for as wireless recharging stations).

How do the boomerangs fly for one? I guess it has to be sub-miniture anti-gravity drives, as there are no thrusters, jets, verniers or propellers visible.

If anti-grav technology has advanced to that level, why do Valks still need Gerwalk mode, or even wings for that matter. You no longer need wings for lift if you have so efficient anti-gravity drives.

  4. As per Kawamori`s previous stance, the new series will take place in a separate independent parallel world. As do all Macross series.

    Grace 3.0? :D

Hmmmn--in the TV series, both green VF-27's were destroyed, and Grace died on the Vajra planet. Movie was rather different. Which version of Frontier's events will be "canon" for Delta?

    Yep

Except that, by the definition Kawamori uses, games and novels are equally as canon as anything else. :-)

  5. I think its neither, its probably a "kira"

It's like he doesn't know whether he wants to throw "the horns" or do a shaka.

That`s surprising, based on your collection I would have assumed you have a personal shopper in Japan

Has anyone purchase the companion book to the exhibit? I'd like to have one...if anyone going to the exhibit can pick one up for me please PM me...thanks!

  6. It looks like they actually have a large supply of event limited items, they are just gradually rationing them out over time. Which is good, people who go later have a chance to get stuff. But they sell out almost immediately so go early. We are meeting at museum on the 12th, 9am. If you get there earlier get in line and save us a spot please.

  7. Yes, but most sold out on friday. I got the last signed autobiography. I did not get any of the aquarion event bromides at the restraunts. There were non event limited Cyber fomula toys, and Aquarion T-shirts still left. As well as the event only program guide which I assume they have a ton of.

Nice shots....was there any event specific merchandise available?

what days will you be in Osaka, I will show you around if its the weekend. if its a weekday I can at least take you to firebomBAR in the evening.

Sadly, I am only at Kyoto for 2 days, Osaka for 2 days and the about 8+ days for Tokyo.

One day for Universal Studios at Osaka and then one extra maybe for Osaka Castle and then Takarazuka Museum. Might not even go to the Jungle Osaka store. I am attending C3 Hobby at Chiba, hence the timing in August.

Has anyone got experience with GoPro-ing on the streets? Do I just strap it on my chest while wearing a jacket and people won't care unless in places where it is unauthorised?

the 3 toys in case are standard arcadia 1/60 scale valks. the statues are one of a kind event only.

Okay, I am definitely going and will ditch Osaka castle for it.

Do you think it is easy to GoPro the place?

Are those models consumer toys or just production statues?

  8. Many Japanese people do read our forums.

finally got some time to play around with my 19, I agree with almost everything said here but I don't find the transformation that daunting, I guess since it shares a lot with the Arcadia I found it much easier than the YF-29 and YF-30.

I really like were Bandai is going, they still have some room to improve tough, those landing gears, was it so hard to paint them white? and they tampoed the whole plane but ignored the cockpit. I also found funny how they somehow implement a lot of gimmicks we were expecting on the Arcadia YF-19, its like they read our forums and took ideas from us to get the edge on certain gimmicks over the Arcadia.

  9. Here is an example, Yamato`s first YF-19. It was very bad, and was not as good as it could have been. The sculpt was far from anime accurate, the QA was very bad. Parts broke if you looked at it funny. But, people bought it. And bought enough for the company to make a profit, which was put back into improving the sculpt and production quality. And with each not quite good as it could be reissue, and new versions, we bought allot of them. And it continues to this day where more YF-19`s are being produced. Because we went ahead and bought the bad toy.

The idea of buying the bad or reissue toy only to someday, maybe get a new or better toy sounds like Toynami's way of thinking. That's what they are saying about a new Voltron. I don't buy that nor do I waste my money on stuff that isn't as good as it can be. Rook's Alpha is just the same bad model in overly done packaging. I sold my original blue Alpha because I hated that toy. Just because I want a red version I'm not going to get the same bad toy in red paint.

I think with a lot of these shows, many will get the main or popular character first. If the toy is bad then even more so they'll just get the main one and call it quits. I think the Bubblegum Crisis motoslaves were like that. Many, including me weren't fond of that toy. But people who just wanted one anyway only got Priss.

I still bet if Beagle released that Rook prototype first, then had Scott second, people would have waited and purchased Rook in large numbers. I just think that because the Rook prototype looked impressive. And I don't think there is a comparable transforming bike toy like it out to this day.

  10. It saddens me to say, that I don't think there was a point where MOSPEADA toys were lucrative. Gakken, CM`s, and Beagle are either dead, or no longer producing toys. Of the MOSPEADA toymakers only Megahouse survives, because they stopped before completing the line, and had their main moneymaker of cute girl figures to fall back on.

People were far too picky when deciding not to buy "unacceptable" products and directly contributed to the death of these companies, eliminating the chance to get more MOSPEADA toys in the future.

It's quite possible that the intellectual property is simply reaching the end of its lucrative life. The minimum investment to acquire/maintain the license and invest in tooling for something as complicated as a transforming toy/collectible may no longer be bankable. Rather than whigning about "unacceptable" existing products, I very much foresee a future where the few remaining fans will be lamenting the lack of any MOSPEADA collectibles.

As an example, at R###TECH.COM the blue and green treads are sold out, only the red one, Rooks is still in stock. She sells the slowest in Japan, and in the US.

Really? I would think a pretty blonde girl and bike would sell fast. But I haven't seen a good figure of Rook yet. Perhaps that's why. Still I think releasing basically two of the same bike at a high price wasn't a good idea. I guess they were waiting on sales to go ahead with Rook. I would love to know their sales projections and how they thought it was going to work out. I don't live in Japan so I don't know how they marketed and sold the line.

Perhaps one day I'll try to commission something. I want both the Cyclone and Rook. The Cyclone will be the difficult part.

  11. Be it model kits, toys or whatever, Hoquet/Fuke/Rook products have been pegwarmers here in Japan. Stick sells out first in every case where those 2 have product out. Beagle would have gone out of business earlier if they released Hoquet/Fuke/Rook first.

I can't remember when the Rook Cyclone / Ride Armor was first previewed. However, I do remember people both here and on Robotech.com forums wanted it. Have there ever been Kickstarter toys? Maybe Toynami should have looked into that. Or they can now. It's really the least they can do. The big Comic Convention is next week and Anime Expo is this weekend. I wonder what Toynami will have for anime fans?

I still believe that Beagle should have released Rook first. The girls sell fast. Then they can make the others. Few people were going to buy two of the same Cyclone. I would have purchased Rook and Lancer. Then maybe Rand. Scott's bike gives me too many nightmares from that older version.

  12. And I was the one who specifically asked him. The way I asked the question was that if the museum was set in the "present" timeline of frontier(as the dedication plaque at the entrance said), how could they show an event from the "future" of M2(as shown on the series timeline in the exhibit).

He answered that every Macross show takes place in a similar parallel universe.

Well, he was asked SPECIFICALLY about Macross II and why it's not part of the "official setting." He repeated his "everything is canon, nothing is canon" stance and said that included Macross II as much as everything else.
