In case anyone was wondering, the answer was "Dona Dona", which IMHO was the more appropriate and somber song for the Tachikomas to sing than "Akai Kutsu".

"Robot Carnival" was released with an English dub in North America by Streamline Pictures. Unfortunately, Carl Macek didn't do a 100% faithful translation (adding dialogue where there wasn't any in the original Japanese version, changing some of the titles, replacing the original illustrated ending sequence with a plain black background). I have their LD release, which fortunately includes the original Japanese audio track, but I still wish Animeigo or some other company would release an accurate subtitled version here.
