    Seto probably will come in shortly with the correct answer, but I suspect they have a natural version of what is the basis of the Fold Organs the Protoculture built into the EVIL series weapons (the biomechanical creatures that would ultimately be taken over by the Protodeviln... well not all of them, the one of Oroborous stayed hidden for a while. Also the Bird-Human might be one too... but it was made a lot later I think). Basically they are naturally derived biomechanical fold reactors. For the Vajra, they run off of fold quartz so they are massively efficient. We also know the Vajra can "mine" (eat) natural fold carbon and the rare natural fold quartz and basically refine it in their bodies. This is why in Frontier the best source for fold quartz was dead Vajra.

    This has been stated for a while since the Frontier TV series ended the Protoculture were heavily inspired by the Vajra (they kinda said as much I the last episode). It's good he still elaborates a bit but I kinda always saw that as pretty clear.

    People are surely not voting based on toy sales. Besides some of those sales are because some people (read: Everyone from this forum, lol) were buying multiple copies of the VF-31A for displays, lol. Doesn't mean more people like this model than any other. If anything the YF-19 makes sense to be in the lead cause new toys keep getting made of it... it clearly is in high demand (as if any VF-1). For good reason of course.

    It's the modern take by Kawamori these days, his views evolve often. Basically everything you see in Macross is a dramatization of unseen 'real' events which may or may not be entirely the same, as the TV series and the movies all portray them a bit differently. This is why later stuff seems to prefer the aesthetic from DYRL, but calls back to the events from SDFM more often. Maybe that is more how the real events were, or maybe not as the show referencing them is also dramatized itself. Did a real guy flying a VF by pushing controls with an acoustic guitar really sing harmonies with space whales? Doesn't sound likely... but it makes a great story, lol.

    That's most likely the GG fansubs. They were very quick and dirty so they could get them out fast, and took a ton of liberties. You won't see the official subs online much (yes some horrible person probably ripped them but it's far less legal).

    Probably, the YF-24 is named Evolution as far as we've seen. We don't know the production name for the Federal NUNS VF-24 though, which has really only been inferred.

    True about that character in general but the overall truth is canon when it comes to Kawamori works is not as straightforward as you'd think. The answer to which is true, TV or movie events is basically, yes. (this refers both to DYRL and movie versions of Frontier and Delta). More recently, and SK has said this also, it has been essentially decided both TV and movie versions are just different interpretations of the same "real" events we never actually saw. Thus differences are just artistic license and viewpoints. DYRL got the extra confusing bit of becoming an in universe movie (though there are hints that version itself might be different than what we saw) since SK did not decide on this overnight. So as far as it matters the DYRL song is canon, it happened, even though we don't see it in the show which is for all intents and purposes more accurate in historical depiction. The real history is somewhere in between.

    Super Sentai and Power Rangers have both done space operas already though (both to good success even)... it's best to let Macross do what it's best at: love stories in space with plot relevant and emotionally fitting music... and transforming space planes.

    This does lead me to a curiosity... those fold faults.. how do they leave the system? Well with the fold quartz it can be done obviously.. and in the show they largely rely on Sigur Valens to project zero-lag folds for them... but for most NUNS ships they kinda can't get there without exiting early and slow legging it across the fault or crashing into it as Megaroad 04 did. So unless NUNS found a way to adapt fold quartz into their drives early on (and that seems unlikely since the super fold booster from LAI that used fold quartz was implied to be a very new technology much later). Did NUNS always have ships sublight it out until they could fold?

    You're right, my terminology wasn't very fair or accurate. At the very least I chose it as a colloquialism that was out of place rather than an intention to describe the region specifically.

To specific points, Windermere was more of a protectorate, but NUNG screwed them over pretty badly trying to keep control on fold quartz to avoid dimensional weapon proliferation. It led to disagreements. Other worlds might not have it so bad if they're not in possession of such dangerous resources. Brisingr cluster is considered to be very back water and the fleets there are low funded cause except for Windermere (which NUNS doesn't control but made it impossible for them to trade in fold quartz elsewhere) there is nothing important. So it makes sense it's more autonomy (hell it has worlds with active civil wars going on). So I'd say degree of autonomy is based on location and relevance. They're is probably a certain required level of self governance allowed since the decentralization started too. Comparing NUNG to the EU but with executive power is pretty accurate it seems. As for Macross 29, the answer to your questions in order presented are: With enormous difficulty, yes, and rather than be ignored, they get picked on by other NUNG states cause they can't exactly stand up for themselves. In fact their economy is in shreds due to having no defense industry at all and being the butt monkey of other fleets/worlds. I imagine they're a member because of they didn't have those basic NUNG rights and legal protections they'd have been entirely destroyed by now.

    It would only merit a call out in the first list. He probably just forgot it though. It was a double feature with the Macross 7 movie if I recall, so that's when it came out. He also left out FB7, presumably because he couldn't handle the BEAUTY of VHS stock footage.

    Hydraulics are largely replaced with electromagnetic linear actuators now. The 5th gen did the most with this to the point where transformation time is so fast due to parts literally separating and reforming in fractions of a second. That said hydraulics always will have serious power in some applications.. just perhaps not VFs. As for the engines, that's easy.. they still use intake air when flying in atmosphere. The Thermonuclear engines super heat intake air into a plasma which becomes the exhaust. This is so fuel efficient a VF can fly in atmosphere for months non stop. In space the thrust is the ramped up fusion plasma from the reaction itself and is very inefficient... but power is cheap in the future and this is why FAST packs exist until later 4th and 5th gen engines allow for reasonable space sortie times (though still very limited compared to atmospheric).

    The topic is fair game for the kind of stuff we normally gather here to discuss. Seto's eagerness to respond in detail should be consistent proof of that. I would have too by now if not for my work schedule. The logic in your statement, while it has an element of truth to it as the non-internalized reason for things like the original poster's curiosity is basically just a conformation of tropes... but that's ultimately not the point I think. We're here because we're fans of Macross and more to the point, huge frakking nerds. We love this stuff. To avoid this over some of the other overly detailed chats we've had in this forum alone suggests any endeavor discussing internal elements of the story is pointless. I'd prefer the so called heartache to the safety of Bellisario's Maxim. I sincerely do believe you are trying to be helpful though, so I do not mean any ill will toward you in my counter-argument. This may count indeed, though I think the SV-51 monitor turret was uniquely designed with that ability too, as most VF heads can't do all the same motions. This whole thing keeps making me think.. while Battroid is constrained a lot to humanoid movement, largely as Seto notes due to human mental blocks, the mode for the most inventive movement is the very one that isn't of any natural form: Gerwalk. It's just a halfway stage, but it's uses are rather broad and despite being somewhat bird-like it is best used for those situations where a plane is too much but a humanoid form just doesn't quite cut it. That's in all honesty, not an answer to Pontus' curiosity. It's merely a cross-observation that the more the battroid is made to do less human-like movement, the closer it may incidentally be to just doing stuff the Gerwalk already can. Food for thought perhaps.

    The second document is almost too old to be relevant anymore, not to mention now that the technology is commonplace no one says uninhabited. I'd treat it as a suggestion made nearly 20 years ago before the technology was proven that was ignored in favor of a more standardized title now that the technology is a norm. That first link is amusing, but also a tad dated, and may itself be entirely specific to a subset of officers. It is true that officers in professional settings likely don't want to use the word drone, especially now that there are civilian grade drones (that said, off duty, or among the rank and file, drone will be heard far more often). RPV is a limiting term though that doesn't account for autonomous action like what Seto mentioned can be done with the Reaper (and others, but the Reaper tends to be the poster child for UAV and UCAVs). It can be entirely correct in some instances, but should not be a blanket term for all unmanned vehicles. UAV works great for a blanket term, and UCAV is certainly used commonly for those loaded with ordinance.

    So, former air force here. Drones is a more common term but UAV is in no way despised and is the correct term. Pilots hate the technology in general but that's just an ego thing.
