  1. I'll get it. I remember watching it as a kid when it first aired in 1978 or so, and the hype it started because it was such a blatant rip-off of Star Wars at the time. As for Galactica 1980, the people who concocted that idea should be hung by their toes and left to swing around in the wind. Currently, I have no idea if Glen Larson was involved with that debacle, but if he was, hang him up. The new Galactica? Nope. I would rather have my memories left intact instead of trumpled into mush.
  2. Great series, but for the life of me I have the uncanny sense of deja vu here...
  3. Oh looky, someone beat me to the punch! I think Gunbuster has one of the most bittersweet endings in any anime or sci-fi series I have seen. As for the past reply as to the ending to Blake's 7, I'd have to agree. Blake and Avon face to face at the end and the way Blake's innards exploded all over the place after Avon shot him was great. Here were two men who were thrown together by fate, who obviously didn't like each other, but eventually gained each others' trust, only to have Blake end up dead because Avon felt he betrayed him. God, I hope that Blake's 7 sequel gets made... Edit* Oh yeah, speaking of comedies like MTM, remember the ending to Newhart, where he wakes up with Suzanne Pleshette from the old Bob Newhart Show and tells her that he just had the strangest dream?
  4. You know, that would be a great idea. However, I think it would be kind of hard for Tezuka to come up with a new plot from beyond the grave. He died in 1989.
  5. Forgot to post these images I dug up from another site. The images are in order: Silvar (Damn, she was hot 37 years ago) Goldar Rodak (What a bad mask) Hope you like 'em.
  6. The 1966 television show was based off of Tezuka's manga of the same name. It was later adapted into a 13 episode OVA series which was rather lackluster at best and shared none of the magic as did the television show with it's comic title. To be honest with you, I did not know the anime series was even related as I had never known the Japanese title of the television show. When they played the now familiar theme song from the live action series at the end of the first animated episode did I make the connection.
  7. Hey! It's about time someone brought up this great show! I loved it as a kid, and was pissed when TBS stopped airing it. The boy rocket was Gam, his mother is Silvar, and his dad is Goldar, who kicked the ass of the evil space man Rodak. They lived in a huge volcano with some old dude. This show was created by Osamu Tezuka and was originally called Ambassador Magma.
  8. Pregnant chicks... I'm kidding! They are hot though...
  9. A few more of my favorites: I Spit On Your Grave The Ten Commandments First Blood Wild Things Stir of Echoes We Were Soldiers Battle Beyond the Stars Ferris Buellers Day Off Krull The Devils Advocate 2001 2010 Fargo Seven Clerks Capricorn One And the best movie of all time is... Nell Just kidding on that last one!
  10. By the Great Sash of Rassilon! Holy Omega! It's about time those guys started to get my favorite Time Lord back into action. I guess it's time to dig up that manuscript I wrote a few years back, do a little updating, and see what happens...
  11. While we're on the subject of movies, I thought I'd pass on the news of the 25th Anniversary release of Alien: The Director's Cut, which is hitting theatres on October 29th. They will be showing the trailer to the upcoming Aliens Versus Predator movie during this release. And if this has been announced before, just ignore me. Source: 20th Century-Fox
  12. Some of my favorites are: Event Horizon Soldier Excalibur Blade Runner (Original version, not director's cut) Alien and Aliens The Abyss (Extended version) Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn The Empire Strikes Back Apocalypse Now Full Metal Jacket Black Hawk Down Saving Private Ryan Gladiator Braveheart The Messenger (Milla Jovovich) The Exorcist Dirty Harry Ben-Hur Sixteen Candles Weird Science Top Secret Don't Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood Die Hard From Dusk Till Dawn Logan's Run Uncommon Valor God, I could keep going...
  13. It's a little off topic, I know, but please let everyone get a look at this. While reading my new copy of NewType USA, and glaring at the Japanese girls like I normally do, I caught something out of the corner of my eye which intrigued me. A girl wearing a shirt which has a rather foul word on it. Just look at the image. I've also noticed that this seems to be a trend. Do Japanese clothing companies have any idea what they are printing on their shirts? I find this kind of humorous, to say the least. As proof, I'll include another image of another girl wearing a shirt with an expletive on it. Mind you, I'm not being prudish. I just find this as funny as Japanese Engrish.
  14. Hello all! I am back. Just got my power back on about three hours ago. At about 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, the huge tree right out front of my house came crashing down and tore the power lines apart like it was thread. It scared the living crap out of me and that was when I lost power until this evening. I am really glad that it didn't crash into my house. My girlfriend, on the other hand, lives in Stevensville on Kent Island and lost practically everything in her house that was on the floor. The water left a pretty good mark on her walls about two feet up, and I hear that was not the worst of it. Annapolis was really screwed. Practically submerged from what I hear, especially over by the Naval Academy and Eastport and especially the old part of the city by the docks. For once I regret being a HVACR mechanic, because of all the gas and oil furnaces that are going to be needing fixing or replacing. Ugh! All in all, Isabel really sucked. I've been through hurricanes before and was prepared, but by the time it hit Maryland it was a tropical depression. I wanted to see lawn furniture go flying by... And I will be getting a generator. All that deer meat and beef I had in the freezer is gone now.
  15. Please leave this up for a few days, mods. I'm about to go through hurricane Isabel tomorrow and will not be online to play for a few days. Even though I do not post as often as I used to, I am here all the time. I live on the water down here in Maryland, on the Chesapeake to be exact, and I may get flooded out. So things may get hairy. I know fellow MW compatriot Mechamaniac will be going through this also. Anyone else out there about to get hit by this thing? Mind you, it is very rare that this part of the country gets hit with storms like these.
  16. When I ordered my Top O Nerae! Gunbuster DVD's from Gainax a while back, I had to get one. I got mine from J-List, which had a pretty decent one at the time which ran me about $100.
  17. Okay, Just typing something in here, no offense to anyone. ”nŽ baka
  18. I'm running the good old memory hog, Windows XP. I've tried MS Mincho, and it looks okay. I'll try the others. As for the way the characters are printed out, I got those off of Gainax's website and copied them as they were. If I was wrong...oops. As for the name Takaya Noriko, I've always seen it printed as such: ƒ^ƒJƒ„ ƒmƒŠƒR
  19. I've stated previously that I am in the process of updating my site, The Gunbuster Index. I am looking for fonts which I can use to make the Japanese characters you see on Japanese pages. Can anyone out there help me with this? I've tried using SimSun and SimHei, but those are Chinese fonts, right? I'm looking for an actual Japanese font. And why is it that these characters do not show up on older operating systems, like Windows 98? I'm not exactly a wiz at creating webpages, and am currently learning as I go, so please excuse my stupidity at times. I just want to get my site to look decent. And in case you wondering why I want to know this, I want to include the Japanese printing of the name alongside the English one. Kind of like in the image below, which is a screenshot of one of my pages.
  20. Surely you jest? You are the first person I've heard that has said that those horrific subtitles are passable. You do realize they call Admiral Takaya's ship the Exelion, and not the Luxion as it should be. There were two additional science lessons made for the Okaerinasai boxed set laserdiscs. They are titled roughly: Spacecraft History and The True Solar System. This last one is the Sailor Moon parody.
  21. They gave Karinka ponytails! She is my favorite of the Steel Angels, by the way, but I think you already knew that, A7! Like you, I am a bit disappointed with this new series, and I do not think I will continue to watch it. It kind of reminds me of the story of Lou Diamond Phillips wife leaving him to be with Mellissa Ethridge. I do like the soundtrack and the updated theme song also, but the second series is not as good as the first.
  22. Unless you are a very diehard fan of the series, I do not recommend it to the casual fan. First and foremost, I AM probably the biggest fan of Gunbuster you will ever meet or talk to, and I can tell you I was disappointed by the set. The box art for the books is rather nice, but it is not held together with glue or tape, so it comes apart. There are also 8 cards in the set which include pictures of concept art from the series. These are very nice. But for $80.00... You might want to go over to Mandarake or eBay to find a used copy. As for the other books, if you can find them, grab them. They are great. I highly recommend the video comics if you can find them as well as any of the others. As for the other question regarding a release date: Who knows? Keith What's-His-Face at Manga has been lying to every Gunbuster fan by stating a release for the last 4 or 5 years since the DVD format came out, and no one believes him any longer. I am perfectly happy with my official Japanese copies now that I have a region free DVD player and if I need to see subtitles I just pop in my old US Renditions tapes. By the way, Valkyrie, if you're out there, I would really like a transcript of those 2 additional science lessons included with the anniversary laserdisc set. Pretty please?
