  1. Anybody love this as much as I do? I've just now remembered to check if they finally made a season 2 and was happy to discover a bunch of episodes. Season 1 was the bomb. There's too much goodness here for me to have a "favorite" scene, although there is just something amazingly hilarious about Chad kneeling before the grocery store manager and calling him Master Pete
  2. I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't waiting for a package. That has especially been true over the last two years. For now, I'm waiting on a zillion Mastergrade Gundams, the vast majority of which I won't remember, let alone build. The ones I will build are: RX-78-2 version 2.0 Gouf (Rambl Rah's) version 2.0 Zeta Gundam version 2.0 and POSSIBLY Zaku II (green) version 2.0 also possibly lookingo to built the MkII AEUG colors...I kind of like it... But mainly I'm sticking to MSG mecha, particularly the v 2.0. After constructing the GM version 2.0...I was so floored at the accuracy combined with the very good resemblence to the original line art/anime that I just had to get more of them. Version 2.0s seem to be very popular in both Gundam and Macross nowadays I'm sure curious what - if anything - the 3.0 will bring with it? Pete Pete
  3. Hooray! Happy to hear it! As for Macross 7 - either way, I'm sure all of us will be curious to hear your opinions for better or for worse about the series. Please drop by the Films/Series threads board to let us know in one of the multiple M7 threads that are there But really happy you all liked Gurren Lagann Pete
  4. Thanks for the pics! Look ok aside from the strangely elongated neck... although I guess one doesn't notice that on the HG version... But still... I think that metalic coating Nu Gundam is way cooler! Pete
  5. Hikuro - if you could post up a review or some pics, or both - I'd be curious to hear your impressions of the Exia. I'm going to get this in soon and am wondering whether or not I should build one given that I'm not a big OO fan. I'm mainly looking forward to the Gouf 2.0 Pete
  6. Haydonites can't use the protoculture powered weapons because they have no physical ability to kiss. Simple. Pete
  7. Bow. One of the greatest lines in internet history. As to the topic of discussion... I don't know. Honestly - I haven't seen ROTF yet. I guess I'll have to catch it on DVD because I just haven't managed to get to the movie theatre to see it. I enjoyed the first one. I have it on DVD. It's a fun movie. It does a good job of paying homage to G1 Transformers, although ultimately it'll never replace them in my heart. I guess I just don't really care about "what happens next." What I could really use is another season of G1 - animated in the same way, with the same voices - hell - even through in the same style of animation errors... But I guess that's pointless. As for Meghan Fox - she's totally not hot. Don't see why people go ape over her. Every time I see her - on MTV, on a magazine...I'm just like...huh? Why? Not saying she's ugly, but she just looks like a dozen other hot women you can find all over the place...in a club...on the street... I will say this: If, a year ago, someone had said: ROTF is going to feature the Constructicons! I would have been like "awesome!" And I would have expected Scrapper, with his penchant for using carcasses of Autobots to build things, Mixmaster the crazy chemist, Scavenger the emo self-doubter, Longhaul the whining proll who wants action, Hook the perfectionist, and Bonecrusher the bully to have had some great character moments and to have their idiosyncracies feature prominently in the plot in some way. Instead, we just get more forgetable through aways. And they look like a bunny that someone blew their nose on. And so..it's in this vein that I don't really care what's next. Pete
  8. 27 years huh? So when Macross was born, I first set foot in the USA. Too bad my folks didn't immigrate to Japan back then Pete
  9. Geez. That's too complicated for little old me. I prefer the idea that hot chicks in mini skirts sing while transforming airplanes fly around shooting things. Pete
  10. Hm. You know...in the original Macross, Fold technology is something that humans develop and learn about over the time span of multiple series and OVAs. The potential behind it is always there, but things are never rushed too quickly, and even though they technically could be, the focus of each consecutive story always establishes some limits. Nothing is ever "all out" - there's always something people 'still' don't know how to do. In Robotech, i basically sounds like after finding the Macross, Rick Hunter and friends can do anything - fold...time travel... you name it. Oddly enough, the only thing Rick Hunter can't do is move away from that black hole because that would risk incurring the wrath of BW and opening up a can of legal worms. Best just keep him there. Pete
  11. That sure makes more sense than the general idea that artificially manufactured humanoids were isolated from culture, but since culture is ingrained in human nature, Minmei's songs (and the erotic attraction of her femininity) revived it. I know this probably sounds kind of geeky, because for the lay person, BOTH story lines are "far out" - but personally, I think the original Macross story line is a lot less random. Robotech's story line seems to be random - like it's obvious they keep having to come up with convoluted explanations for why elements from three completely different anime don't fit with one another. Pete
  12. Yeah. I imagine Destroids were a relic from the Unification wars, where they probably were very useful. With no giant aliens to fight against, and pretty much no valkyrie active in the Unification wars, Destroids were likely developed to basically be a combination of tank/artilery/anti-aircraft and missile silo all rolled up in one with legs. Given that the war was global, I imagine that the mobility a destroid enjoyed also made it a prefered weapon of choice. Finally, it was likely very effective in urban combat since I would imagine that for all the precision targeting of calling in an airstrike - it's even better if a platoon has a destroid assigned to them that's in the thick of things and can target fire even more accurately and provide back up and armored support. Destroids also probably helped scare people into submission and were an effective tool used by the UN government to get their way. Notice how many Destroids were gaurding Alaska base when Misa flew in... But yeah - later, with space colonization etc etc - they really stopped being all that important. Pete
  13. A Day in the Life of Macross World By VFTF1 Act I The Setting: The Internet(s), Macrossworld.com. The mythical uber-thread - a twilight zone world where various topics and themes from various threads mingle and mix, creating a quixotic brew emulating the components that make Macross World what it is... ------------- Graham: Hey guys! Just got Yamato's new VF-1A Kakizake "Stake Dinner" version pre-production sample in! As you know, this is the highly anticipated TV Kakizake that also comes with a free coupon to Japan's Nagato Steak House. Practically useless for everybody living outside of Japan, but if you can get one of these for under the 600 USD price tag they are fetching on Ebay, it is worth it. Anyways - the toy itself is awesome, except for the left arm, which seems to seperate in four places before finally coming apart and the head, which turned to dust as soon as I touched it. MW Chorus: Oh yes baby! I can't wait till my preorder for this bird gets filled! I just found one on ebay for only 500 bucks! What a steal! Awesome! Anybody live in Japan who can send me some of Nagato Steak Houses' steak? Shin Denstetsu Kai: You guys are all brain dead. Bandai would do a much better job on these. I can't believe you shell out 500 bucks for something that breaks straight out of the box and think it's good. VFTF1: Well, I don't know what everybody's complaining about. I got 6 VF-1A Steak Dinner Kakis and only 5 of them had the problems that Graham talked about. The sixth one is 100% a-ok perfect. Definitely worth the money. Whamhammer: Personally, I think that this scene was handled better in Robotech. I get the feeling that Knuck Gipper's (aka Kaky Zaky) death there had more meaning, especially given the backstory from the novels. Redwolf: Well to be fair, the Ohgnogi Macross novels that I've read bout dealing with Kakizaki also give him a fairly detailed back story. Gubaba: Excuse me, but do you have evidence of the existence of these novels? RuskieVFaussie: Wooo! Hey guys! I just got my Bandai DX VF-25W (Whallie World Repaint Version) - WOOT! Thing is awesome! Sketchy: Any big differences from the previous 46 VF-25s that Bandai has put into their DX line? RuskieVFaussie: You bet! There is a picture of Wallie's head Tampoo printed on the fighter - I'm not sure where though, because I haven't found Wallie yet... Shin Densetsu Kai: I think Bandai have stated that the Wallie tampoo is not actually printed on every piece produced, but it's more like every fifth fighter. If your fighter has Wallie on it, you get a free Naked Little Girls Macross Frontier Gashapom from the new Naked Little Girls Macross Frontier line. RuskieVFaussie: Who comes up with these names!? Gubaba: Actually, the correct translation is not "naked" little girls but the Kanji treat "naked" symbolically - as in "the soul is naked before us" - so these are supposed to be very emotive representations of the individuals - they're going to be kind of like the "unleashed" line in the US for some hero figures. As for "little" girls - it just means that they are little gashapom toys. Cannon Fodder Chorus: OH MY GODS! THOSE JAPANESE PEOPLE ARE SICK! What's with this whole naked little girls thing!! MW Chorus: But Gubaba just explained that the translation is actually... Cannon Fodder Chorus: THIS IS MORALLLY VILE TRASH! AgentOne: At least it's not Macross 7 Trash. Duke Dogo: I second that. Macross7Hater: Bassara is so gay! Macross7Hater1: Yeah, and it's so stupid - this idea that music can defeat the enemies!? What does that have to do with Macross?! Keith: Why is Basara considered gay? Bassara is very manly. He just shoots sound rather than missiles, and music is instrumental to the theme of Macross. VFTF1: Basara rules! Macross7Hater3: But think about it - couldn't Kawamori have instead shown us what happened to Rick Hunter and Lisa Hayes? MisaForever: Hey guys! I've come up with a new poll question - why don't we discuss something that doesn't get much attention around here: who is the best Macross babe? MacrossChorus: Ranka! Sheryl! Minmey! Sarah! What about Ishitar? Was she from Sentinels? No dummy! Macross II! You mean a sequel to Robotech? Why does nobody remember Wendy Rider? MisaForever: Hey guys! I've come up with another poll question - which Macross babe do you love the most? MacrossChorus: Ranka! Sheryl! Minmey! Sarah! What about Ishitar? Was she from Sentinels? No dummy! Macross II! You mean a sequel to Robotech? Why does nobody remember Wendy Rider? MisaForever: Hey guys! I've come up with another poll question - which Macross babe is the most talented? MacrossChorus: Ranka! Sheryl! Minmey! Sarah! What about Ishitar? Was she from Sentinels? No Dummy! Macross II! You mean a sequel to Robotech? Why does nobody remember Wendy Rider? VFTF1: Hey everybody! I think I'll display this one in battroid mode with the head turned slightly to the right. My 18th YF-19 is displayed in Battroid mode with the head turned slightly to the left. I talked to Yamato about perhaps giving these more poseability for collectors who might want to create displays with 20 YF-19s in battroid mode. They can't all look the same - so the goal is to be able to pose them in as many distinct ways as possible. Vegas: Cool! Here's my master photography showing my Valk collection. Where you see the VF-1A cannon fodder squadron - that room used to belong to my kids before I kicked them out to make room for my collection. And here we have a couple of pictures of my Destroids. The closet used to belong to my wife, but I threw all her clothes away to make room for Macross stuff. MacrossChorus: Awesome pics! Vegas you're the best! You're the master! MEMO132432: HEY YOUS STUPID MACROSSPURISTS LMFOA LOL LOL LOL! LAM COMING VERY SOON NOW YOU GET ALL STUPID KICKED HG MAKE ROBOTECH WOLRD IS FAMUS. Exo: Ok - that is off topic. Please get back on topic or I'm going to lock this thread. Roy Fokker: Dude. I hate this job. Why are you taking time out of my day making me reprimand you? * * * End Act I Will there be an Act II? In a sense - there already is, fo so long as Macrossworld spins like a planet, spinning in the solar system that is the internet, so too spins this amazing tale of humor and fan dedication... Pete
  14. Gubaba - check out the Ohgnogi Macross novels on this point. His novels clear up this problem of the discrepency between DYRL and SDFM TV pretty well. Pete
  15. Re: that Alto - You could try to unscrew this. My Alto is the regular version, albeit second edition, and it also had a tight elbow that I unscrewed - but the screw do nothing. The screws only hold together the two pieces that compose the elbow - they have no impact whasoever on the mobility of that ball joint. Just firmly but delicately keep applying downward pressure until she does what you want her to do. In playing with your Macross toys, you must always remember the immortal advise of Roy Fokker from Macross zero: treat your Valkyrie like a virgin - you must be firm but also delicate. You won't go wrong. Pete
  16. I'm going to ask a question that fits in perfectly with how this thread seems to be going along now: Hi! I just want to know - will there be a Macross Frontier Movie? Sorry, couldn't resist, but reading this is just amusing. "What's the release date?" - "It's staring you in the face." "Will they have new songs?" "they're in the trailer." "there's a trailer?" "it's on youtube." Funny Sunday reading Pete
  17. Well, since this is the My Fair Minme and White Reminicences Thread - please permit me to give my impression of Gubaba's work. First- of course - thank you Gubaba for your effort, and for giving me the chance to read this. Now onto some thoughts about the story itself: 1. I started to get the feeling that everything that is slightly "annoying" about Minmey isn't really her fault, but rather the result of being too popular with everyone. Think about it - if EVERYONE wants to date you, then going on a date with a guy isn't something exciting - it's routine, and pretty quickly you realize most guys are generally the same, and it just gets boring. Thus, I don't really feel "annoyed" by Minmey sticking up Max or walking out on that other guy. You just have to imagine to yourself that she likely has five dates a week and look at it this way: she wants to be nice, she doesn't want to dissapoint or upset anyone. Guys keep asking her out - so she agrees to be nice. But she can't force herself to be swept off her feet, particularly since guys are tripping over themselves to ask her out - so the process gets kind of boring. And of course, each guy (and we as the audience) get the impression that she's full of herself because we (and the guy) ONLY look at one particular date. To the guy - it's a big deal - HE got the date with Minmei. But, he doesn't consider that HE is just one of a ton of other guys who "went on a date with Minmey" and that Minmey is just being nice to everyone. And by doing so, she actually starts keeping people at a distance... She has more fans than friends. This episode is kind of sad because it shows how her popularity is creating a bubble around her that makes it so she doesn't really have close friends. Seiko and the other girl are just vaccuous female friends - they're fun, but I don't get the feeling that they're really close to Minmei. As for Hikaru - it's almost as though the only reason she gives him more thought is because he isn't shy about expressing displeasure with her, while other guys - even if they get shafted, probably STILL oogle over her and shout L-O-V-E Minmei the next morning as if nothing had happened. But here one also glimpses the tragic trajectory of Hikaru and Minmei's future love - because it's not really love, it's just a contrast. Hikaru is just a stark contrast to the "fanboys" - so Minmei feels like Hikaru isn't routine. But just because Hikaru isn't routine doesn't mean that therefore the feeling is true love - it's just a novelty. This is why it is destined not to last. 2. I don't understand what the mouth-stretching scene is about... is it suggested tha someone got to kiss? So much for my first impression Thanks again Gubaba for your work! Pete
  18. You assume they know it to be a plot hole... Pete
  19. Turn-A-Gundam reviews - continued. Episodes 18 and 19 today. Good and good. I was bummed by episode 16 (review snore) and didn't like 17 (a mess), but 18 and 19 picked up the slack nicely. 18. So - first of all. I'm a big fan of the juxtaposition that Kiel-as-Diana made in her speech - she will not declare a state, and then she reassures Harry by saying that they will conduct themselves with dignity and honor. See - it's a wonderful wonderful brilliant lesson. This is because a state is effectively a form of coerced dignity and honor that has nothing to do with conduct. A state is dignified and honorable by definition, independent of conduct. That is the whole point of dressing it up in pomp and making a "formal" declaration of the thing - namely to try and create the illusion of something dignified and honorable. Naturally, because the thing is merely a formal type of dignity and honor, it actually has very little true dignity and honor. Kiel-as-Diana prefers conducting herself with dignity and honor to making a state. There are many excellent historical and philosophical theories that get wonderfully summed up by this scene - and it is indeed one of my favorites. My NEXT favorite scene is Diana-as-Kiel doing the laundry. Man - she just gets hotter and hotter. And there's nothing better than seeing a hot woman in traditional southern dress doing a guy's laundry. Hell - that's just beautiful. Now a not so favorite scene - JugglyBoobs' assasination attempt... she is able to kill trained soldiers (even sober ones) and dissapear like a ninja...but Kiel-as-Diana defeats her with a notebook. Not really the most convincing scene. Also - what kind of an assasin yammers on and on and on instead of just shooting? Again I had vibes of Transformers here... "Hah hah hah! Now, Optimus Prime - I finally have you! So, instead of blowing your head off, I'll first take you to my secret base where I will show you how my secret plan is going - a secret you otherwise would not have learned...then I'll keep you alive to gloat about my secret just long enough for your minions to rescue you and you to be freed of imprisonment and defeat me! Curses!" ... You know the story...The bad guy always has to give a long, long, loooooonnngg speech before killing the good guy - and in the meantime, the good guy manages to get out of the jam. So... this scene was contrived. I was actually expecting Kiel-as-Diana to be assasinated. In fact - as much as I love Kiel - I think the story would have been better off if she were assasinated. There is ABSOLUTELY NO POINT in introducing the jugglyboobs assasin sub-plot only for her to end up being a total lame red-herring. Like..here's a new threat...NOT. So... what's the point then? To illustrate that there are malcontents on the moon who don't want to go back to Earth? First - who's forcing them? Second, there must have been a better way to illustrate this point - like for example a news briefing showing protests, demonstrations and what not on the moon with people refusing to go or refusing to pay taxes to fund the Queen's elaborate recolonization of Earth etc etc. It's these kind of lapses in literary judgement that weaken the plot - seriously. This was just a bad bad bad sub-plot; its' point could have been achieved much better. Maybe if we had more slurmy sex scenes than zero with Jugglyboobs - then that would have justified it. But as such - we get no fan service from Jugglyboobs (beyond her jugglyboobs) and really no good contribution to the plot. Bad. 19. This episode was great. The galloop going through the desert was reminiscent of White Base's plight. And Sochie...there's nothing worse than a jealous little girl with a vendetta who isn't afraid to die. But I guess I understand her. She's very young and her dad was taken away from her. It's only natural she reacts this way. Still - Why doesn't anybody try to talk to her? I mean...yeah...she gets hints...I guess that's good...nobody reprimands her too much...and I guess there's not much that can be done... But...ok - I guess it's a good character arc. Hmm... Oh - and the chief engineer - Whore. I love that. "Mr. Whore - can you tell me how this works?" Wonderful Just one of those silly things to smurk at. Anyways - Diana-as-Kiel doing laundry: pure gold So hot! Pete
  20. What I want to know is...how did those things ever get brought to market? I mean...look - at some point, the production of Robotech has some money behind it, and there were meetings, strategy sessions....There was clear evidence that cartoons with toy tie ins worked etc etc etc... And they knew what the competition had both on the TV and on the toy store shelves... And what? They came up with THOSE? It's truly hard to believe. Like...I actually wonder why they even spent any money on this? Did anybody buy these? I mean - I can only imagine them selling for random reasons like...woman walks into store looking for cheap Barbie like doll for 3 year old daughter finds this, it costs a dollar, she buys it... the end... It wouldn't even be in the "Robotech" section. It's the kind of thing you'd find at like the local gas station in a small town where sometimes they'd have some cheesy "toy" item just in case a car with a toddler pulled up and needed something for the road... I dunno.. this is just horrible. No wonder anime failed in the United States for such a long time. How were people supposed to take anime and Japanese stuff seriously and find it interesting if this is the kind ofm erchandise they got? I mean - it's not hard to understand why Transformers was state of the art when compared to something like this... heck... I mean...I remember collecting just about everything back in the 80s. TMNT, GI Joe... now, looking back, lots of those "action figures" suck compared to modern renditions like Revoltech... But if you compare even the worse generic Joe or TMNT character to those ...things... I just don't get it. Pete
  21. Yeah, I know. But usually, bootleggers don't take themselves as seriously as these guys... Jeezus. I can't believe it. I understand the crappy Minmei carded action figure. That's just a case of them doing a piss poor job at producing something - fine. But the 'barbie' style dolls are what really makes my jaw drop. I mean it's just so blatantly obvious that they shuffled and rummaged through some crapbin of 10 cent generic production dolls and threw them in Robotech boxes. I mean - not only do they look nothing like the characters...but the clothing have NOTHING to do with the characters and are just random. Totally random. It's like... like if I took some random old toy, stuck it in a box, wrote "TrAnSfoRmErS" on the box with a magic marker and tried to convince people it was the real deal. I mean... what...why...how ? People buy this crap? Pete
  22. Any fans of this series? I admit I haven't seen any of the episodes and have only rudimentary knowledge that this existed... But recently, I read a blog suggesting this particular episode, and man am I blown away by how awesome it is. Naturally, it's frighteningly awesome... But I like this kind of stuff. Very Orwellian... The episode is called "It's a Good Life": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi21BDWmKyQ&NR=1 Pete
  23. Best check out the Episode by Episode discussion threads here on Macrossworld. Everything is explained and discussed in detail there Pete
  24. Well...moving along... Got the head done today, and the nose. Not much by way of Sheryl decals going on today - just the one on the head, which was a pain in the ass. I'm still new at this. In fact, if anything, what has been a challenge has been panel lining. I've decided that pencil is too light, and now I'm wondering whether permanent marker is not too dark... grumble grumble. It's not easy... But whatever...it can't be helped. I just hope it looks good when finished. There are places where I totally screwed up the panel lining IMO, like under the nosecone - sort of. I was considering "weathering" these areas to fix to screw up - giving it some wear and tear so to speak. So it doesn't look so..well...BRIGHT!... So now the question arises...what do I use for weathering effect? But maybe I'll do that at the very end when the whole thing is built. For now I'm fighting that feeling you get when you start with tan initial premise and want to change along the way. I wanted this thing to stay in fighter mode - I've heard that the decals don't like being transformed...although I figure there are ways to get around that. I mean Ozma's big "skull" on his back didn't take kindly to wings folding for transformation either and needed to be cut where the wings folded so as not to ruin the decal. I can make precion slices in Sheryl's decals too to incorporate the transformation...er..."precision" being taken with a grain of sault given my poor skills Anyways... I hate building the head because then I start thinking "dag - this guy will look great in battroid mode" ... but really - the Sheryl Decals don't display well at all in battroid mode. On a final note... I know the sheryl decals are for 1/72 scale, but if you put the VF-25S model next to a 1/60 Yammie...they look "the same size"... I have a spare set of Sheryl decals and I've been thinking about using them on a Yamato... Pete
  25. Wow! Look! Harmony Gold takes random cheap crappy plastic dolls and shoves them in a box that says 'Robotech' on them - even though the dolls have NOTHING TO DO with Macross or even "Robotech"! What a genius strategy! Then again, given how that "Minmei action figure" on the card came out...maybe I should be thankful they stuck random dolls into boxes..sh!t...that action figure is beyond ugly. But... Wait... Aren't all of these bootlegs? Please tell me they are bootlegs and that these weren't ever actually OFFICIAL merchandise? Pete
