  1. Well jokes on them, I'm a certified Gundam X and Turn A enjoyer!😤 That has to count for something out of this entire discussion of Gundam being pessimistic. I feel like even with the latter's Dark History in mind there's always a silver lining to it all, a friend put it best to say that Gundam is pessimistic on the systematic level, but optimistic on the personal level; even disregarding this forums opinion on G-Witch its ending was pretty optimistic as well. Really I'm more convinced it's just Universal Century's overarching grasp (And honestly, Zeta's infectious effects on the franchise as a whole) that makes people think that there can't be happy endings in Gundam even though there's many to the contrary, no matter how small or big. Hell no, this is Macross... when a series ends, it should end as stylishly as possible. And the Macross Quarter surfing a fragment of Island-1's armored shell down into the Vajra planet's atmosphere was ****ing awesome, how dare you. 😛 Ditto, Macross has and always will be over the top in the best of ways, and seeing the Quarter play surf is yet another top contender for that! I think the only exceptions to that are really the video games (And in a lesser extent Zero, which even then those like Nora has understandable reasons for being apart of the Anti-UN), since unless we're focusing on the fascisms of certain powers of the UN government and how it got to that point they're more or less Zentradi dissidents who really only exist to be the guys to shoot at unless you're a lucky Moaramia (I mean heck, the enemy commander and rivals' names from Digital Mission VF-X are quite literally Commander and Rival, I know the game really wanted to focus on the female cast but jeez.) Honestly the only thing I'd have on a wishlist for the new series (Other then personal design aesthetics including more that isn't a derivative of the skinny VF-25, since honestly the franchise peaked with mechanical designs with Plus and 7) is more focus on the already established worldbuilding details (Like the consequences of human overcloning and seeing more planet life in general) and more insight into the different aspects of Zentradi life after becoming apart of the UN. It was my favorite part of the last several episodes of SDF and it's a shame it played second fiddle with a repeat of the love triangle in the short time it had.
  2. After being very sidetracked, I touched up the line art I made and colored it properly to finalize the design in a way. I gave it more features from the M7 P*L*U*S VF-14 to make it more obvious where the VA-14 came from. Not entirely sure if I want to make an entire character sheet for it but I wouldn't be opposed to one. I didn't know what colors to formally give it, but I feel like its appropriate I give it the Reguld colors to still give it that UN feel to it. Any feedback is welcomed!
  3. You know different (and scathing takes) aside, I'm not sure why so many people think just because Sunrise is going to make the new series that means its going to be more like Gundam (Whatever that means at this point, there's been nearly 4 and a half decades worth of the franchise and I've learned the name means completely different things to other people.) Just like how Plus got many different people outside of Studio Nue's/Big West's usual payroll (Who the majority would work on Cowboy Bebop in Sunrise) and how the franchise moved to Satelight away from the company to begin with, we're still gonna have a few veterans like Kawamori, Tenjin, and Miyakate going to be involved in the creative progress. Also the last time Macross became more "Gundam" we got Macross II, which other then the occasional reference and inclusion in the Macross Chronicle books has never been that referential in Kawamori's stuff. And for all you can say about 7, Frontier, and Delta's writing they certainly weren't boring compared to II.
  4. Absolutely agreed. Part of the reason why I love Macross compared to Gundam is that the mechs aren't outdated the moment they leave the fridge and reach room temperature. Even with the likes of the VF-1 and VF-5000 they're still used in some shape or form, or isn't immediately outclassed by newer technologies. There's still designs early in the timeline that haven't been properly drawn in Macross that existed beforehand like the VF-5, V-BR-2, VF-16, VA-14, and so on if you brand new designs to use. Export/monkey models" already is a established thing in 7 and the Frontier era so why not? He tried his best with it, cut him some slack. 😆
  5. Fair enough! And how could I ever forget the legendary Machida who punched a Vajra right in the face? 😁 And in Macross itself we kinda have the inverse; a Valkyrie getting smaller with upgrades like Mylene's VF-11MAX Custom. Unless the VF-11MAX was always a meter shorter then the regular in which case the point still stands. That is true, I do like how it shows how much Valkyries have become a regular part of the world at that point. Same with the main continuity with 7 Dynamite's VT-1C Commercial Valkyrie and pretty much 85% of the designs in The Ride. I really wish someone made the effort of translating the light novel, it sounds really intriguing regarding its characters and the worldbuilding aspect.
  6. Honestly considering how I loved Planet Eden in Plus and how into Delta was regarding the worldbuilding of the different planets in the Brisingr Globular Cluster, I think having one specific planet to focus on would be nice to see again and to build on the world of said planet. Macross is really good at exploring worlds in general after SDF. Now that I won't hold my breath for unfortunately. New kits sell for better and worse, and even though I prefer the VF-31 over the VF-25, people do want a more unique Valkyrie as the main. I personally would love a VF-171 or a VF-11 focused series to see the grunts of the NUNS instead of the ace pilots, but that's really only something Macross video games (until you're given the option of the "main" Valkyries) and Gundam side stories would do then a main Macross series. I'm familiar with the VF-5000, but not the former. Maybe you're referring to the VF-3000?
  7. I was referring to Galaxy's Super Defender, but it is a constant truth that the Destroids can only do so much. But to be fair unless you didn't pilot a VF-25 and/or a part of the SMS you didn't have a chance against the Varja to begin with lol. Having it be a bit bigger would make sense, though I'd assume in-universe you could convert the Variable Glaug into the Neo Glaug if you want to upgrade the model. At the very least its designation VBP-1/VA-110 does seem like it would come from the first Variable Glaug. I was probably against the idea at first considering the VF-3000 was essentially a not-successful scaled-up VF-1 because of its Battroid/Gerwalk joints tending to slip up. Thinking about it the most elusive Macross II mech that has the least info out of it is the Variable Fighter/Powered Armor hybrid since it's considered an enemy belonging to the Mardul yet variable technology to my recollection was only Earth technology in that timeline as well.
  8. Well if its description is to be believed and it's said to not only have a high rate of operation and find itself useful in emigration fleets and planets then it's doing something right. 😆 Still trying to wrap my head around how a variable battle pod which was made for a Zentradi child to pilot can also accommodate regular-sized Zentradi. Kinda wished we actually had dimensions of the Variable/Neo Glaug instead of just winging it because it looks to be on the small side in Macross M3, but in the Plus video game, its Gerwalk form stands taller than the decently sized YF-21 Battroid. Their sense of worldbuilding is my favorite part of the books, even if they don't get the official information exactly correct. I'd be surprised if they did. From what I've learned about the Master Files they usually use Zentradi mecha to compare them to other Valkyries, not really expanding on them per se.
  9. I don't think any distinction of branches in terms of uniforms or pilot suits have been made regarding the main continuity like that. Everyone pretty much wears the same clothes from what can I gather. Could see infantry being a thing in more than one branch, IIRC the EX-Gear belonging to the Frontier fleet did belong to the Special Forces, and also from the same series there seems to still be a use for armored vehicles. So pretty much their game appearances are probably off-the-peg models that haven't been touched at all since the SWI-era I'm assuming. Makes sense considering they're usually piloted by either terrorist or paramilitary organizations. I think at least in the Macross Chronicle book it specifically said the Queadluun-Rau was valued for its dogfighting abilities. And considering they seemed more than a match for the VF-1s in their time, I can definitely believe that. Battlesuits in general seem to be the most "all-purpose" use in terms of Zentradi mechs. Regults are also dirt cheap relative to Valkyrie designs, so their still being around for New UN-Zentradi is completely believable. Personally, it's hilarious and mildly sad that the Super-Glaug, in which its predecessor was exceptionally rare because of its Factory Satellites being destroyed got a "brand new" model for New UN use yet there was not a single Nousjaduel-Ger in sight in the ragtag reprisal appearances of Zentradi mechs in Delta. As if the galaxy is against that design specifically. 🤣
  10. So some curious musing; we know how most branches of the New UN uses Valkyries and extra mechs; NUN Spacy and Air Force primarily uses Valkyries, the few times the Navy would be relevant as well (including specific models of the VF-4 and VA-3 for the NUN Navy), and the NUNS Marines using both Valkyries and Zentradi mech. Now I'm wondering how extensive the use of Valkyries would be used within the Army branch aside from general air support. Probably could see them using Destroids since even old SW1-era models find themselves being used all the way up to the VF-X2 era and then there's the Super Defender from the Macross Galaxy fleet. Would also assume Zentradi pods and battlesuits could also be used in more branches then just the Marines; the Reguld's are primarily used for ground operations if not in space for example.
  11. Soooo what does this say about Macross VF-X2? 🤣 "I want Macross, but without the things that make it Macross" will never not be the weirdest hot take from old fans. Macross has always been a love story first, and a war story second. If you ask Kawamori, the war story has never been more than a backdrop for the love story from the original series onward. iirc Delta wasn't even supposed to have its love triangle, and as someone who does like it, it does feel a bit more phoned in compared to Frontier's before it. It didn't get me as upset as repeating it in the last 9 episodes of SDF though. 😅 I do think if not a love triangle then love in general should be the common theme for Macross. It was the thing that opened the eyes of the Zentradi, twistedly the reason why Sharon went mad, Basara and Sheryl love singing and makes it their life mission, etc. Honestly, after Delta gave me a taste of Regults again I also share the same sentiment whether they're on the good or bad side. Something has to give about the Variable/Neo Glaug being left in the dust!
  12. Good work so far, but I'd always assumed the Variable Glaug would be much bigger, considering how huge the Neo Glaug seemed in the Plus video game. Unless it's presented as such in M3.
  13. You mean more than just dog fights? Because there were a decent amount of Valkyrie fights even though they leaned more towards the Fighters than fights with the Battroids. I'd keep my hopes down for that, unfortunately. The only other animated series that went back chronologically was Zero, and that one was a very special exception compared to how much Gundam goes back to the OYW and CCA-Unicorn era. Even side materials like Dynamite and The Ride usually take place a few short years before or after the main series they're jumping off from.
  14. There are pacing issues to be sure but to say no conflict is resolved is...Not true? By that logic that can apply to Macross 7 or just 90% of Gundam as a whole and not G-Witch specifically because the biggest conflicts are dragged out and really only resolved in the final few episodes. "Things happen until we go after the giant space fortress" essentially, and that's also pretty much a lot of "Space Road Trip" animes from the 70's and 80's if you really want to stretch it.
  15. I feel like calling it "plotless" is a overstep despite its flaws; it's just not doing the regular Gundam formula (which even by Seed and even by Zeta got kinda tiring) and that's fine. With that said Kawamori will easily be involved with some of the planning, and IIRC writers for anime aren't bound to one studio at least back then. Many of Macross Plus' development team later did Sunrise's Cowboy Bepop a few years after.
  16. The more I think about it, the more I realized that there's a surprising amount of mind control throughout the franchise. Plus had Sharon mind controlling the city, Protodevlin brainwashing people for the Supervision and Varauta Armies respectively, Frontier had Galaxy's plan to make the galaxy into a hive mind, and Delta following suit. Then again the standard was set with the Zentradi essentially being programmed for war and not to interact with culture/miclones. Wondering if there's more to it in-universe than just coincidence and repeating themes.
  17. That political movement being the Neo-Zentran one, right? iirc that one was about reviving Zentradi warrior principles. I assume that kind of movement would only pop up in more completely pacifistic parts of the UN if everywhere else was more focused on actually increasing defense against Zentradi.
  18. That is true, though 7's obviously Zentradi characters (Veffidas, Macross 5 fleet, the rioters when Sivil entered City 7,etc.) usually shared a duller green and/or blue skin color, though that might be the DYRL influence. Frontier's a 50/50, sometimes they more or less look like regular humans, other times they have hair they can have emotionally displaying hair or even have orc tusks. At least there I can tell they had a lot of fun. 😁 That's just anime being anime at that point. 😝 There's also human characters with technocolor hair as well. To continue my train of thought, maybe Zentradi-only colonies started from a domino effect when Earth banned giant sized ones in 2030. Does make me wonder if Exsedol was a miclone or giant prior to the Macross 7 leaving to earth; he sure adjusted to the latter much more after the first series if anything.
  19. If I can nerd out about my favorite group of jolly green giants yet again, it's always interesting to me whenever we see some insight of Zentradi amongst the UN. There's something about seeing giant Zentradi coexisting with miclones that always gets me giddy, whether it be the small snippers in SDF and 7, or the entire district from Frontier. Not to mention how there seemed to be a divide between the factions of the Zentran who willingly fought with Britai and those who reluctantly joined like the 33rd Marine Battalion. Many colonies either seemed either more human focused or mainly be mixed in races; so Macross 7's throwaway lore of Zentradi colonies apart of the UN always fascinated me. so I kinda wonder what kind of a "Zentradi culture" that could come up after the First Space (specifically in UN governed areas, otherwise we'd just have more Zentran rogues wanting to be completely warlike again, lol.) I remember people scoffing at Veffidas' "Street Fighter" like backstory about wrestling all over the galaxy(?); turns out Zentradi wrestling was a concept all the way back in the 80's! 😆
  20. You know, that makes...Significantly more sense. I either remember hearing the Zentradi bit either from here or Macross wiki (Which currently calls him one despite having no mention of being taken in by Zentradi)....I should stop going there for any reason aside from pictures, lol.
  21. So there's something I get confused by. iirc Gamlin was said to be raised by a Zentradi family in a Mars colony, which I assumed that a Zentradi family adopted him after his parents(?, I think that's what that's what the funeral from P*L*U*S was for) became no longer apart of the picture, and also explains his more militant (and loveably dense) personality. However I've seen some sources that say he's Zentradi as opposed to being a human, so I'm wondering if its just a mix up or simply an assumption from his backstory.
  22. So going through some Macross side stuff for reasons, and I'm reminded that Macross Generation exists and so does Canary Minmay. In the plot synopsis she's said to be popular enough to be considered the "Second Coming of Minmay" (Which kinda on the nose considering her name, lol.) Since I've seen no full detailed summary of the plot, I've kinda gotten overly curious and wondered if she adopted the name "Minmay" as a stage name of sorts, or if she's related to a clone of the idol perhaps? Or maybe Generation's writers were just being as transparent as possible with the connections. 😛
  23. I don't think there has been a in-universe explanation, but I can only assume it's not only to match with the change of the NUNS logo, but to differentiate them from enemy/antagonist Zentradi so the NUNS wouldn't be shooting their allies down.
  24. Are you referring to the symbol Temujin and the rest of the NUNS Marine Zentradi in Frontier wore? Yeah I did notice that, but at the same time it feels like a one time thing since iirc Delta's Zentradi has the original emblem and Plus also had it when Earth was holding it's ceremony before being crashed by the climax of the plot. EDIT: Was mistaken; the Zentradi garrison from Delta also has the Frontier Zentran logo (apologies, couldn't find a better picture on hand.) Maybe it was a logo that also changed after the Second Unification Wars?
  25. I had a feeling it was fanmade. Though on that topic, even though I heard that the VA-14's name "Hunter" was fanmade, it did appear in the Japanese Wikipedia and other Japanese sites. So now I'm wondering where did that name come from? Okay wow, Kamujin really meant it when he said the worst thing that happened to humanity was giving Zentradi the ability to build. And all that from a VF-11 stolen a decade and a half ago. But yeah it's unlikely they'd go for it in that case considering the VF-22 is kinda Zentradi enough for a stupidly high performing Valkyrie. I'm assuming Timoshee got one due to the Critical Path Foundation basically being Macross' Anaheim? Considering how the factory where the Stealth Regult and Stealth Glaugs were blown up in VF-X, I'm starting to think the Variable Glaug ending up in UN hands was a once in a lifetime deal. Though considering the Feios made it into Black Rainbow a few years after it's possible their plans also survived for potential rogue Zentradi to use again.
