This is one of the problems adapting works out of their time and I don't think anyone can really be faulted for it. Lord of the Rings was written well before our modern era of mass production popular culture. Lord of the Rings is one of the works (like many greats of literature) that inspires filmmakers, writers, and producers to make films that utilize its successful elements. Growing up with thousands of films and television series that use such classic works and their context means that we've been bombarded by a hundred other stories that have already used a similar scene. Hence, the scene in ROTK faultlessly becomes cliched because of the prior propagation of lesser works using Tolkien in homage. Read enough books, see enough movies, everything will eventually seem cliche.

Very well said.

Cool. Creepy but cool. -
Saw it last night, I thought it was a great flick. I'll have to read the books and see how I feel the movies measure up to them. BTW I loved the ending. Most hollywood movies forget that life goes on after these kind of events, cutting off at the climax of the final major event.

Basically only the dragon head (part of upper chest) and the legs are made of die cast, the rest are plastic. The toy is actually sturdy even if it does not look like it. Here is a comparison pic on dragon mode (courtesy of greattoys). Thats it next to a 1/60th right? Tell me thats a 1/60th its next to.

That's funny you mention that......I was surfing (i.e. lurking) around some Transformers forums which shall remain nameless for now. It seems that some of them thought Macrossworlders "spammed" last years TOYBOXDX "Toy of the Year" Contest. Is there any truth to this? LOL! Prime is going to win cause the transfans are going to spam the TBDX award this year. So they really have no right to complain against MWers, they are just worried that the MW count would defeat prime, but in all reality, Macross is a small fandom compared to TFers, so they really don't have to worry. Now the TBDX Chogokin fans, yeah they do have to worry. If they want the danny or the New Getter Team to win, its going to be a hard year. I was torn between the Danny, the Metal Grade Seed Gundam, the BT Smokescreen and the prime, In the end I went for the prime. Come on people, the VF-1 had its day last year.

I am a little suprised by the number of people who like the cowboy bebop dub. Personally I can't stand the voices. But in general I hate dubs, so I am probably not the best person to ask about dubs I thought were worth while. I will say the Gasaraki Dub was decent though.

While they I know you didn't get to see the figure itself, were you able to ask if it was going to be articulated?
-
Careful with the hips. They were so tight on the one I recieved that it caused a small fracture when I tried swiveling it around to transform it in to batroid. I was able to loosen things up, so now things are fine, however that small fracture has me terrifed to touch the hip joint.

Ridley Scott to direct the next Alien film?
GobotFool replied to Jolly Rogers's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
or Alien vs Terminator vs Robocop vs Superman Ugh.... There actually was a Terminator vs Superman comic, as well as a Superman vs Alien comic. Whoever came up with the idea of taking utterly unrelated franchises and crossing them over deserves to be shot. -
What da ya mean winning over the SOC Dancougar, maybe even the 1/48 line? It's winning over the the 1/48 Yamato already! It seems to me no one here dares to say it. I mean come on, even by just looking at the OP pictures, it's so friggin' obvious! And although it's not being really nice to the toy makers to compare toys of different shows, they are still, of the same category. I'm quite a fair judge on quality and ingenuity of products that are almost similar, plus, I own both the 1/48 Yammie and SOC Dancougar so I know what I'm saying. The 2003 ToyboxDX's TOTY should have gone to the SOC Dan, but too bad, Prime just arrived in time and whooped his ass. Guys, it doesn't really matter which toy wins TOTY this year - I'm just so HAPPY to be able to own a toy as well thought-out and made as the MP-1!!! SOC Dan is still a worthy contender but IMO, its price and the (ahem!) loose neck - both pull it down a notch compared to the satisfaction from playing with the MP-1. I also enjoyed the BT-01 Smokescreen a lot, but it can't beat the Big Dan or MP-1 when it comes to sheer SIZE and PRESENCE. The Metal Material Strike Gundam? Nicely done and I'd pick it over the also excellent KS Shiki, but it's just another Gundam. The SOC EVAs are nifty, but didn't really work for me mostly because of the glitzy paint-jobs. SOC Getter Dragon is also nice and simple... maybe too simple! That's how I feel about the candidates, happy voting! :-) I agree, some of last years choices were a little lackluster, (save for the 1/48. Okay shameless love for the 1/48 ) This year, OMG, the toy companies pulled out all the stops! Too many good toys, to little money and space.

My god! Its that good, for it to win your vote over that of the Dancougar, that is true praise coming from you. Now I want this even more Yaps i would agree with Drifand on this, MP OP wins over the SOC Dancougar by a large margin in terms of design, engineering and beauty, maybe even the 1/48 line. Boy im glad i didnt got the dancougar, with its price i could afford two MP Op instead. My thumbs for it to be the toy of 2003/2004. Hey BOB, hope you are able to get you cousin who is in SG to get you one, cos its low in stock or unavailable at the moment. Cheers That is another thing it has going for it. Price! Its larger than both the Dan and a 1/48 yet cheaper and from the looks sturdier.
