I'm sure the kids will like it just fine. We're old, remember that. -

Well crap, now I know he dies for real. Eh, it was a 30-years old spoiler, I guess I can live with it. -
Is this a Chinese-American cast? Or have they cast mostly Chinese actors?

What are y'all talking about the cartoon movie IS the real ending shut up stop lying This looks way better than I expected. Call me a traitorous weaboo a-hole, though, but the entire trailer I kept catching myself wishing they'd switch back to a native Chinese dialect and not this weird English dub, the voices just don't match the characters, Disney really dropped the ball there.

Isn't this supposed to be the final season? Or does the ending imply a continuation? I haven't checked the season myself yet - still bingeing Jojo - so I wouldn't know.

They've trademarked/copyrighted/whatever the word "Macross" as well as other oft-used terms, I think. If Bandai/BW/Nue did release the sequels in the west, they'd have to remove those references or pay HG... for rights... to their own creation... siiiiiiiiiiiiggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh

You know what? I really, really love this Macross thing. No other entertainment property has taken me on quite so many emotional roller coasters with so many highs and lows over the course of not just two hours, or 20 episodes, or seasons or series, but an entire lifetime as Macross. What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
kajnrig replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Finished the journey to Egypt arc of Stardust Crusaders. The formula got a bit boring by the end of the season - lots of monster of the week plots - but the developing camaraderie of the team helped get me through it. Episodes 10 and 22, though. BANG! right in the feels. It would have been nice if more of the enemies had received similar longer-term stories. They were all interesting in their own ways, only to almost universally be dispatched within one or two episodes. Here's hoping some are secretly Hol Horses, though. -
By unbelievable circumstance, three different parties wanted to see this movie three days in a row. Took the kids on Tuesday, then a cousin invited me out on Wednesday, then a friend tonight. Sheesh. I feel Spider-wiped out. It's an enjoyable movie, but definitely meant for more casual watching. Cute high school romantic comedy, and I can only sit through so much of that at a time.

I keep seeing this sentiment, and I wonder where it must be coming from or what fluke of the gods it was that my specific one was totally fine. Shoulder flap threw me for a loop because I kept expecting it to be able to droop down more, but that's about as bad as it ever got for me.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
kajnrig replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I finished Battle Tendency myself yesterday (thanks to this discussion), and pretty much all of this is me. I find the constant "explaining" of every move (it's really more accurate to call it "justifying") to be tiring sometimes, but the characters are interesting enough and the goings-on zany and unpredictable enough that I just roll with it and have a good time. The sudden shift to Stands in the next arc threw me for a loop. I thought the development of Stands would involve a story arc, but nope, just bam, first episode, ghost buddies helping you out. That plus the generational and geographical leap helps keep things interesting and the pace brisk. I can see why people like this show so much. -
Around the 0:26 mark, are they still promoting the narrative that Japan attacked the hospitals and infirmaries at Pearl Harbor? Because I remember Michael Bay getting tons of flak for specifically that bit of revisionist history. At that point, they should just add in the giant transforming airborne supercarriers or I'm just not even interested.

Mmmmillennial says no thanks. That trailer was a dumpster fire of "modern" editing. The only draw here is it being directed by Elizabeth Banks, whose films as an actress have always been just slightly off-beat and weird. I never would have thought of her taking a role in something like Slither, for instance, and yet there she was, super game for it. (Apparently she was turned down for MJ in the Raimi Spider-Man films because she was "too old" at 28 and instead played Betty Brant. I never would have made the connection if I hadn't checked IMDB just now.)

IIRC, this design in particular is from the Blue Destiny side-story manga. Since I don't know anything about or care for the designs from Blue Destiny, this "run" of BD P-Bandai releases has been an easy pass. I'd have loved to see the AoZ kits in the RE/100 line, though. I thought that was the whole point of that line, was to feature more obscure designs with simpler but still high-quality engineering.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
kajnrig replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
If you're watching the Netflix show, it almost certainly slows down in subsequent seasons. This first 2X-episode season blows through the first two major story arcs, whereas the third story arc is the more well known one. I myself am still stuck somewhere in that second story arc. I believe the rest of the show is on Crunchyroll. -

It's more literally accurate to the original Japanese terminology, which used "Children" to refer to both the singular and plural, so "First Children," "the Children," etc. (You can hear them specifically say "children" in the Japanese dub.) You can get away with that in Japanese because it doesn't have the same singular/plural noun distinction that English does; "Children" is just a cool-sounding word to them. But in English, as you say, it's grammatically incorrect and sounds truly, truly awful. The debate around the new dub centers around the same issue as has plagued translations from the beginning of time: being literally correct versus being thematically or emotionally correct. In the infamous hospital room scene, the Japanese dub has Shinji say, "最低だ、俺って。" or "Saitte da, orette." or lit. "Is the lowest, I/me." (ie "I'm the lowest.") ----------------- In the 2002 Manga Entertainment release, Shinji's Japanese dialogue subtitle, and his line in English, says, "I'm so fraked up." ----------------- In the 2019 Netflix stream, Shinji's English line, and both dialogue subtitles, says, "I'm the lowest of the low." ----------------- The Netflix dub is a much more direct, literal translation, but some have argued (correctly, I think) that the 2002 dub does a better job of conveying, in English, the same sentiment as the Japanese dub. That expression, and its line delivery, more fully expresses the depths to which the character has fallen, and how thoroughly disgusted he is with himself. Similarly, later in the movie, Shinji and Misato have an exchange that goes, in the Japanese dub, something like Shinji: "But Misato, you're a stranger ("他人 / tanin," lit. "other person/people"), you don't understand/know anything about me." Misato: "What does it matter if I am?" The 2019 dub sticks as closely as it can to the original, including using the phrase "you're a stranger," which doesn't have the same connotation in English as in Japanese. It's something of an insult in Japanese to call someone close to you a stranger; the inference is that a stranger is someone who doesn't know you, who doesn't understand you. In English, "stranger" either simply means someone you pass on the street or refers to a person with ambiguously-sinister intent. Getting the same sentiment across as the Japanese equivalent is much more straight forward: "You don't know me." The crux of what Shinji/Misato are saying is, "You don't understand what it's like being me." and "That doesn't matter," respectively. The 2002 dub gets closer to capturing this essence: S: "But you're not me. You don't know what I have to go through! You don't understand!" M: "So (frakking) what if I'm not you!?" Nothing about "stranger" this, "stranger" that.- 998 replies
