Battlestar Galactica Discussion IV with Blood And Chrome
Keith replied to 505thAirborne's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
They hit a couple planets that had some space military strenght, and usually just wound up fighting with those people. That's one thing that bugged me about the original BSG in general. The Cylons were so gung-ho on wiping out the colonial fleet, but allowed almost every other humanoid planet they came across to live, some of which they'd clearly been to before. WTF? In other news, just finished Caprica, and honestly, I really liked it. Even though it got cut short, I think it succeeded in doing its main task, i.e. fleshing out a few parts of BSG there wasn't time for. Now we know specificaly where the colonial cylons came from, which gives us a pretty good idea of how the original Kobal cyclons came about. We know they weren't just A.I.'s that wanted to become human, and in fact were human minds raised in mechanical bodies that wanted to get back to being human...though still were just as petty as the other humans. We get a pretty good look at how their religion came about, and why they believe what they believe. My favorite part? Ressurection, the cylon images they navigated the basestars with, angels, and likely the literal deus ex machina that was guiding everyone and prodding things to happen? All wifi-network based. Ok, maybe bluetooth based, but hilarious & ingenius in equal measure. Only major question I felt are still left unanswered were just what was that which didn't like to be called god? The implication I get is that it was the original Kobal incarnation of what Zoe's avatar became. Why were humans able to pick up on cylon wifi-halucinations? Since cylon brains are based on human ones, the wifi too is something that's inherently based on a human ability. That explains why Baltar could tap into it. Perhaps also why everyone was able to see Starbuck after she died, in fact, that does make a good bit of sense more now. The biggest whole Caprica getting canceled left is what happens to Tamara, she's literally just left hanging. To a lessor extent, what happens to Zoe once the Cylon war starts. Does she join with the other wifi god? Is she war collateral? I wouldn't mind a web short at some point touching on those issues. All in all, I think Caprica did what it was most intended to do, raise my like of BSG a bit more.- 698 replies

I've been following some import vita forums, and haven't heard anything like that. Hel, I've got a launch PS3, & had a launch PSP and never had problems. Only compaints I've heard are things Sony already told people about, i.e. feature's not being enabled until the U.S. launch.

Battlestar Galactica Discussion IV with Blood And Chrome
Keith replied to 505thAirborne's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well, it always comes back to Macross. Gall Force was totally derivative of Macross & mixed it with Alien. But BSG (storywise) followed pretty close to Gall Force Eternal Story/Destruction/Stardust War. The better action scenes on the other hand were very Macross-ey.- 698 replies

The VF-25 was totally a rip-off of the Nirvash Type-0 from Eureka Seven. Whowever designed that should totally sue Kawamori and the Aquarion guy!! -

Battlestar Galactica Discussion IV with Blood And Chrome
Keith replied to 505thAirborne's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Still very similar in that the Solonoids & Paranoids had been stuck in a cycle of joining & seperating (genetically) in their cyclical war. As for BSG, assumedly the humans that eventually evolved were part colonial, part cylon, & part native to earth.- 698 replies

And now Media Blasters has laid off over half it's staff. Looks like the U.S. anime industry is going to be getting worse still before it gets better... -

It's the principle. Besides, I got the impression that since humans & cylons successfully bonded (this time) that there wouldn't be a need for another time.- 698 replies

Aside from SEED having its 10th anniv, there's no new animation there. Considering Macross is having its 30th anniversary, I think we're just as likely if not more so to see a Vita game this year. We know they've already got the engine going on PS3, the question at this point is how many models they've worked on. Macross is an easier game to produce for the sole reason that there's a lot fewer mecha types than mobile suits in gundam, and for some reason we (Macross fans) love color/head varieants (not questioning it, but it'd be silly in almost any other franchise). With that said, I'd be damned surprise if there isn't a Vita game this fall, or at the very latest spring 2013.

Watched robotech first run, then pretty much forgot about it for a few years. 90's RPG's got me back into anime until one night that I had a dream about robotech, but in this dream, the SDF-1 was called "Macross," which led me on an internet search to find out more. Coincidentally manga had just released the 4th episode of Macross Plus. Dropped down to a local "Wherehouse" and picked up the first episode. Went back the next day to snag the other 3 (back then VHS tapes were 1 ep per). Also grabbed Macross II, but wasn't so hot on that. I got myself into the anime scene proper & started catching shoes/movies, but decided to rent Robotech from a local rental shop. Didn't hold up well at all... Came across a copy of "Superdimension Fortress Macross" in a bargin bin at EB (before they were gamestop), or maybe it was Software Etc (before they were Gamestop). Hell, it could have even been Babbages (you get the idea). That clicked "much" better than the robotech rentals did, bad HK dub and all. I dabbled in the fansub scene while still supporting stupidly expensive legit VHS (soo expensive for sub tapes), and found a distro that had Macross 7. And since all was BOMBA!!! (saw DYRL proper & subtitled this way too btw). Naturally, AnimEigo's Macross set was my sole reason for picking up a DVD player, even if it did come out a couple years later than expected. So instead my first anime DVD wound up being "Iria: Zeiram The Animaiton." No sh!t about the dream part btw, maybe it was just my subconcious leaping to the logical conclusion that the ship "should" have been named Macross, being from "Macross Island" and housing "Macross City" in robotech. Or maybe it was an Otaku-Newtype awakening

It all depends on how much care is put in, but a nicely done remaster or upscale of anything cell animated can be a great improvement. Yeah, certain Macross episodes have dubious quality, but the vibrancy & detail can still improve (if done right).

It's a lot cheaper & smaller than a pachinko machine, and has the pachinko animation on a seperate disc? As for upgrading to bluray in general, that's something you have to experience properly to understand.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
Keith replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yup, and yes you do. I don't want to spoil the series for you, but I will tell you that Anno & the original manga creator had some serious disputes during the production of the series which lead to some pretty awesome later episode oddoties, and Anno leaving Gainax for the second time. -

Before I forget again, Kare Kano is also a great series. It leans more towards drama than comedy fairly often, but it's some of Anno's best work. -
The probability is looking very good. The next Gundam Battle game has already been announced for the vita, and should hit in a couple months. So I can easily see the next Macross installment hitting before the end of the year.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
Keith replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
It's a natural progression. I highly reccomend Azumanga Daio, & School Rumble. I don't know why high school commedies are so endearing, maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's middle age, or maybe it's just quality storytelling. For more anime fandom commentary & fun, Genshiken is great, as is the godfather of the genre, Otaku no Video. -

It was probably an inexpensive license, with the probbility of decent returns. If it leads back to licensing classic anime seires, I'm all for it. -
As much as I hate to admit it, that's really reasonable for a 36 episode series LE release, really reasonable.
