sketchley: if you had a better grasp of the language you would realize that i wasn't disagreeing with you. my argument was simply that it was vague and could go both ways. that is all. and i honestly don't think i was being that rude this time. read my frickin post. sheesh, well i'm glad you have confidence in your credentials sketchley. just don't use it as an excuse to be annoying, i.e. always trying to comment or correct translations that aren't necessarily wrong, or trying to correct a native speaker or stating what is obvious to a native speaker like it isn't. half the time you come across as if you're just trying to show off knowledge.

concerning language: it seems to me that it's always been ambiguous what language is actually being spoken in the macross universe. i know it's in japanese, but that's just because the anime was made in japan. it could be that they speak in japanese just for the audience's sake, like how the movies 300 or gladiator are in english even tho the characters would actually speak in greek or latin. japanese would make sense for macross tv since south ataria island was supposedly part of japan. however, it appears likely that there is a common lingua franca that all earth culture humans speak, and somehow i doubt that it's japanese. english would make sense, esp when you consider hikaru talking to the operator in english at the beginning of dyrl and the pilot and air traffic control using english in the beginning of the deculture edition. however, alto pronouncing michel "mikhail" as well as sheryl writing a message in french (why didn't she just text?) clouds any speculation as to what the lingua franca really is. and whatever it is, the lingua franca apparently has not completely replaced the other earth languages, as can be seen in macross plus ep1 where holograph advertisements appear in multiple earth languages. interesting too that when the zentradi send a transmission to the macross and global is surprised that they were able to decipher the language so fast, he simply refers to it as chikyugo, or earth language. shouta: i'm pretty sure the translation i was making fun of wasn't yours. amedama=candy is correct. however, "agedama" sounds a lot like "fried balls." and your translation of "sashiire" is accurate as well. "provisions-supplies" or something in general that would help. in this context, almost always refers to food but i prob would have translated it as "something" as well, or added my own interpretation and translated it as "something from the restaurant." either way, that's way better than simply neglecting to translate that word and saying "i'll get you a sashirei." what the hells a sashirei?

"agedama?" "sashirei?" oh man, i fear for you guys. i bet if one of the japanese speakers on this site hooked up with a fan subber you would get better translations than that.

yeah that pretty much sums me up! i always expect video game movies to be lame so i never watch them. i've been averaging about 1 to 2 movies seen at the theater a year for the last 3 to 4 years. and i used to be a film student!!!

this is just sheer speculation, but i think sms occupies a ship that is docked with battle 25 like the prometheus was to sdf-1. it would make more sense rather than a separate transformable ship because in episode 2 the sms building and hangar are clearly accessible from the frontier city dome. i guess it could be possible that 2 separate ships are docked to the dome city, but that would look kind of wonky.

ミハエル is the same katakana used in japanese for michael schumacher's name. so it could be mikhail, or it could be michael. and while alto calls him ミハエル, luca and ozma call him ミシェル, which sounds a lot like michelle. michel (french), mikhail (russian), and michael (german/english) all are the same name, with different pronunciations based on the language. so this could mean he is russian or german, or french. if he was german, braun would make sense, and brun would make sense if he is french. both words mean brown. so if he was english, his name would be michael brown. who knows, he could be any of those.

was finally able to watch the episode. do u guys want me to do a rough translation of the new scenes? i'm not a fan subber and wouldn't want to do whole episodes, but there's really not much that's new in this episode so i could do a quick translation. please don't ask me to do the songs (the ending doesn't even sound japanese, sounds like kanno jibberish language).

i suck at the internet. i downloaded the file but the audio won't play in sync. i have divx, kazaa lite codec pack, quicktime, but it still doesn't play properly. is my comp just too old? *cries*

i seriously doubt that. first of all, it didn't appear like neena was with wong liu ming and the professor when they were looking at o-gundam. it seemed more like neena was spying on them. wong liuming is a little crazy, but i don't see that as good reasoning for speculating that CB are the villains. there's no doubt in my mind CB and setsuna will once again be the protagonists of the series. ribbons (lol at that name) and his little crew of "innovators" are probably the main antagonists, with the federation's unification army being their puppets.

i agree with you on that one 100%. as others have said, they should have chosen either graham or coroner for the last battle against setsuna, not both. it's great to have an arch nemesis that you duke it out with at the end, but when you have more than one arch nemesis, it's a little too much. one of them is gonna feel tacked on. it wasn't perfect, but it was still a great episode with lots of action. i'm looking forward to next season, although it looks like next season will be more of a typical gundam series with a federation and a resistance movement.

i'm almost certain i saw that purple valkyrie come up in one of the TV specials. kawamori himself introduced it as an early early concept 3d model of the VF-25. obviously, the design ended up being revamped completely, although the silhouette in fighter mode kinda looks like the silhouette of the finalized VF-25 with fast packs.

edit: oops, didn't see the article that you guys were talking about. it mentions that the VF-171 is a mass produced, multirole version of the VF-17 (which was designed primarily for stealth attack) so it can be considered a downgrade of sorts. however, it has improved aerodynamics and is easier to pilot by regular (non-ace)pilots. so, atmospheric performance may be improved over the 17, but it does clearly state that the 171 is slightly behind the 17 in performance. so you guys pretty much nailed it.
