The Comic Book thread

At least this make's a lot more sense than Thor getting a sex change. And it looks like he's keeping his Falcon wings, which I like. But what's with all the "let's take established characters and replace them with different ones!" going on at Marvel? Are they running out of ideas or something? I mean, we already replaced Steve Rogers as Captain America once.- 557 replies

Started building RG Strike Freedom today. So far, he's been a bit easier than Zeta, partly because I know what I'm doing now and partly because he doesn't have Zeta's overly complicated transformation mechanisms built into his torso. Strike Freedom also seems to have less sticker details. I've got the main body built, I just have to build the weapons (including the Super Dragoon and hip-mounted railguns). Of course, no sooner than I start building when the mail guy brings me a box from Amazon, so now I have three RG kits waiting to go after Strike Freedom. EDIT: Stayed up too late, but Strike Freedom is done.

Yep. Spider-Man, Venom (until they canceled it), The Scarlet Spider (until the canceled it), Iron Man, and IDW's Transformers books are my staples. Yeah, they could do that. It just kind of flies in the face of what's been established in the last 20 years or so. Heck, even when he was Donald Blake, the impression I got was that that Blake was kind of an avatar who literally transformed into Thor. I'm not against the idea of a girl filling in the Donald Blake role, but when she turns into Thor I'd expect her to turn into a muscular blonde Norse dude.- 557 replies

I'm not a huge fan of 00... honestly, I'm a borderline UC purist. But I did really like the Gundam designs from 00. Considering that Celestial Being was a small, private force (or terrorist group, take your pick), they were a lot more grounded than the ridiculously over-the-top designs of SEED, which are some of my least favorite. It's not so much that I'm against crazy designs, but it's one thing when it fits the setting, and another thing when you have what's supposed to be the regular military building crazy mecha that shoot tons of rainbow beams with names like Destroy, Calamity, Forbidden, Chaos, or Abyss. Anyway, I was going to try really hard to stick to the UC RG kits, but I'd kind of like Exia myself. Speaking of RG kits... I know that SEED is my least favorite Gundam, and I know that the mobile suits in SEED are more or less my least favorite mobile suits. But, like I said, there aren't any hobby stores around here that sell Gunpla. And since they're coming FedEx Smartpost, who knows when my RG Gundam and Mk II are coming. And I've been playing a ton of Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn (like, I have around 70 hours logged so far), and with an A-Rank plan, the Strike Freedom is kind of an OP beast. So, finding myself at a Barnes and Noble that sells Gunpla, but again only has Strike Freedom and Destiny in the RGs (actually, the only other 1/144 scale Gunpla at all there were the Wing Gudnam Fenice and the Sengoku Astray from Gundam Build Fighters), I broke down and bought both. Yeah. I mean, I'm glad that Bandai is giving hobbyists and Gundam fans a variety of lines and scales and what not. I'm glad they make PG kits, and I'm glad that people enjoy them and all. They do look nice. I just prefer to keep everything on the 1/144 scale, since all the ones I've built are already in that scale (and I happen to really like the RG kits). I mean, I've already built an RG Zeta and HG Wing Zero (Endless Waltz), Zaku I (Black Tri-Stars), Nu Gundam, and an RX-78 that I repainted as a Prototype Gundam, I have RG Destiny and Strike Freedom waiting to be built, and I've got RG Gundam and Mk II coming from Amazon. When I get through that, I'll probably see if I can find a 1/144 HG Deathscythe Hell (Endless Waltz) and an RG Zaku II (standard green).

It's not that I mind the idea of females taking over for male heroes. I mean, the Carol Danvers Captain Marvel is simply the best Captain Marvel. If a female super soldier wants to step in for Steve Rogers as Captain America, or Pepper Pots starts wearing the Iron Man armor, sure, go right ahead. The thing with Thor, though, is that Thor isn't really a super hero persona or a title, he's a guy. Son of Odin, prince of Asgard, and all that. I mean, you want to make Spider-Man a woman, ok, but you want to make Peter Parker a woman, that's just messed up. Marvel's official line is that Thor, for whatever reason, isn't worthy to wield Mjolnir, so this girl (who is worthy, I suppose) picks up the hammer and becomes Thor... not lady Thor, not She-Thor, but the one and only Thor. Which doesn't make a lot of sense. I mean, did not-worthy Thor stop existing or something?- 557 replies

Gundam Side Story - Missing Link (Game)
mikeszekely replied to Tochiro's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The game's out now, has anyone played it? I love Gundam, but the thing is most of the Gundam games aren't very good. Unless they improved the gameplay, I really didn't care for Rise from the Ashes or Zeonic Front, and I thought Encounters in Space was ok, but still mediocre at best.- 3 replies

Any of you guys ever heard of Rakuten? There's a deal for new customers where, if you use the code TREAT4U, you can get a big discount on a few Xbox One launch games. I just ordered COD: Ghosts. The series has kind of gotten old for me, and I really prefer my shooters on PC, but it was only $5.99 with free shipping. I think I like the series on console $6 worth.- 6894 replies

Looks nice, but I want to stick with the 1/144 scale. Which is kind of irritating me... it seems that some of the available HG Gundam Wing kits are 1/100. Since I already found a Wing Zero, it'd be nice to get the other four Endless Waltz Gundams and Tallgeese III. I can only find stores claiming they're going to get Heavyarms and Deathscythe in late July. They have out of stock listings for Tallgeese, and no mention of Sandrock or Nataku.

I've never built a PG. From the photos I've looked at, though, the thing with the MG and PG kits is that, while they do add more parts, details, etc, they still look more like 3D representations of the animation models than scale models of military weapons. Gundam Planet has a page where they were showing what the different series mean by comparing all the different RX-78s, and I think that the RG looks better than the PG, and the MG looks like an upscaled HG. Of course, if you want something bigger, PG is I guess the way to go. I assume that they might be really fun to build, too. Me personally, though, I want something that looks nice to display when I'm done. I think RGs look the best, and the 1/144 size means I can display more of them in the same space.

Well, the SEED kits/designs aren't my taste, but I'm happy just because you're enjoying Gunpla! I started with the RG Zeta, who looks fantastic, but is kinda fiddly because of the included transformation gimmick (which, ironically, makes me not want to transform him). I might go check out a different B&N today, but otherwise, the next kits I build will be the RG RX-78 Gundam and the RG Gundam MkII AEUG colors.

I think you're in the same boat as me. I built one or two Wing kits back when Gundam Wing was on Cartoon Network, then I built a HGUC RX-78 and an HGUC Nu Gundam several years ago. I just decided to give it a third go because the RG kits are so good. Speaking of RG, is that an RG Destiny? I almost bought one because they had it at, of all places, Barnes and Noble. I passed, though... SEED and SEED Destiny are collectively my least favorite series. Plus, while Strike and Impulse make sense as military weapons with variable mission packs and what not, most of the Gundams in SEED/Destiny are just ridiculous. I really want to stick with the Universal Century RGs... although if Barnes and Noble had Exia instead of Destiny and Strike Freedom, I'd probably be building Exia right now. Another kit Barnes and Noble had, and one I didn't pass up, was an HG Wing Gundam Zero Endless Waltz version. It was only $15, and while I've grown into more of a UC fan (and just criticized SEED for ridiculous designs), Wing was the series that got me into Gundam. The thing that surprised me the most was how much paint I needed. When I built the HGUC RX-78 and Nu Gundams, I think the only paint I used was a dab of yellow on the RX-78's rifle scope. Everything else was either molded in the right color, or had a sticker. On this Wing kit (the copyright on the box was 1998), I wound up painting his hands white, I put the white on the tops of his feet and the edges of his waist, and I painted the white trim around his color. I painted the inside of his neck area red. I painted the blades on his beam sabers green. And I painted parts of his feet and the shoulder vulcans a dark gray. Then, while I had my paints out, I repainted my HGUC RX-78-2 as an RX-78-1, since I have the RG kit coming from Amazon. What I learned from all this painting is that I really and truly suck at it. Big time. I'm going to focus on RG kits, and if I do buy any more HG kits I'll stick with newer ones that either don't need paint or very minimal paint.

Maybe I'm just not as into red mobile suits as Char? I definitely want the RG Zaku II, but I'm not sure about Char's Zaku. I'm holding off on Char's Z'Gok and hoping they make a regular blue one. In the animes, I liked the black Rick Dias better than the red, and Sazabi is my least favorite mobile suit in Char's Counterattack. And, while I'm not interested in Astraea, and not even particularly into Gundam 00, I do kind of want the RG Exia. If they do an RG Gelgoog, I could go either way between the green/gray or Char's colors. I do like Sinanju, though. I doubt it's high on Bandai's list for RG treatment... maybe I'll get the HGUC Sinanju and Gundam Unicorn Destroy Mode.

I guess I'm lucky that that it's from a manga side-story to a Gundam series I didn't particularly care for, so I don't need it in my collection. That said, I'm in love with the Real Grade series. I think that the HG kits have improved a lot over the years, but the finished models tend to look more like 3D representations of the animation models. A few alterations here and there and a ton of decals make the RG series seem more like miniature versions of what an actual mobile suit might look like (hence, I suppose, the "real" and "real grade"). I've got the RX-78 and the AEUG Mk II coming from Amazon, and I can hardly wait. I'm also super super tempted to buy the RG Zeta 3, although it's kind of expensive. Speaking of re-colors, did they do any RG versions of any other RX-78? Like G3 or Char's Gundam? Anyway, after the Gundams I have coming, I'll probably do the Zaku II next, then the two Zephyranthes kits. Can't decide if I want Char's Zaku or Char's Z'Gok or not (although if they do a regular blue re-color of the Z'Gok, I'm sold). Ironically, as interested as I am in recolors of Zeta and the RX-78, I'm just not interested in the Titans Mk II. As far as non-UC kits go, I'm not going to say never, but I'm not even going to think about it until I'm caught up on UC kits. Speaking of UC, for other suits I have to decide if I want to wait and see if Bandai gets around to a RG kit, or if I should just get a HGUC. The extra detail seems to make a big difference on a lot of suits, older ones especially. The HGUC RX-78 and Nu Gundam I have look really out of place next to my RG Zeta. But some of the newer HGUC kits (like Destroy-mode Unicorn) don't look half bad, and there are some like Quebeley that I'm not sure how they'd benefit from the extra detail in RG kits. Any thoughts?

Well, I never played the PS3 version, and the last Dynasty Warriors game I'd played was 6, so it's hard for me to make an apples-to-apples comparison. I think that it looked like a PS3 game, though. Although, the game ran buttery smooth at all times, even when there was a crap ton of enemies on the screen, so maybe that's an improvement? I played Borderlands 2 without ever having played Borderlands 1. I definitely think I was missing some of the story, especially when you start hooking up with the heroes from the first game, but nothing that really affected my enjoyment of the game. As for Far Cry, each game has been more or less unrelated to the previous ones. Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon are both excellent games (Far Cry 3 just missed being my pick for Game of the Year in 2012, but as good as it was I loved Sleeping Dogs), but I didn't really care for Far Cry 2. And, not to impact your impending noodle diet, but if you're really interested there's a Far Cry compilation for the PS3, that contains Far Cry 2, 3, and Blood Dragon. It's $30 on Amazon.- 6894 replies

Hey... I bought Dynasty Warriors 8 for my PS4. And it's actually pretty nice to have it plus DW8XL on one disc. As for your suspicions, is Sony encouraging them? Well, in the case of The Last of Us, I should think so... it's their game! But for the others, I don't think it's anything as complicated as Sony doing some backroom dealing or anything (remember, Tomb Raider was also re-released on the Xbox One). I think it's probably just a simple cash grab, figuring that gamers desperate for something to play on their new consoles will either buy them if they passed before (like I did with DW8), or even double-dip (as I might if the rumors of a PS4/Xbox One version of the Mass Effect Trilogy turn out to be true).- 6894 replies

Definitely. Well, technically PS Now is in beta, and the beta prices aren't supposed to be final. And Sony is talking about still wanting to do a subscription. For now, though, it's a rental thing, with prices starting at around $5 for 4 hours, and going up to weird things where a game that costs $15 to buy outright costs $15 to rent for 90 days. Between you and me, I think you're making the right call, buying a new system. I managed to find a PS4 in January, and so far I'd guess that the amount of time I've spent playing it has been tripled by the amount of time I've played on my PS3 since then.- 6894 replies

Finally saw the film myself. I thought it was pretty terrible, but in kind of a weird way. See, my expectations are were already lowered, as it is a Bay film. That's why, even though I've always hated the Bayverse Transformers designs, the lack of personality in Transformers not named "Optimus Prime" or "Bumblebee," the ability of humans to hurt and kill Transformers, the plot holes and inconsistencies, the ridiculous focus on human characters, the stupid need to include a hot girl just because she's hot, etc, I really liked the first one. And I liked Dark of the Moon. Revenge of the Fallen was pretty bad, and I do think that Age of Extinction was better than it, but RotF didn't have me feeling so disappointed. Maybe it's just because AoE was way too long... it was more time for me to feel that disappointment. The worst part is, knowing that I'm going to hate it, I'll probably see Transformers 5 in the theater within a week of its release, too.
