We finally sunk the Yamato?!?

How many years have you been posting here?
the white drew carey replied to Skull 0ne's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I think I joined in October of 2001, but I'm not exaclty positive. At the time I work 3rd shift so I had a lot of time on my hands. I originally posted a lot at Starship Modeler's forums but set up shop over here once I re-discovered Macross. -
evil flying aircraft carriers from space?
the white drew carey replied to dedalus001's topic in Movies and TV Series
Once again- Inexperience. You've all made your explanations and, in the meantime, inadvertantly backed up my statement that it was inexperience that led to jhalf of South Ataria Island, the Daedalus and the Promethues being dragged along to Pluto with the Macross. If the humans KNEW what they were doing, this wouldn't have happened. But they didn't understand and/or take into account the possibilty that the ship's fold might yank along some extra baggage. Hence, once again, INEXPERIENCE. Also, this was Mankind's first fold. First times usually always suffer from... INEXPERIENCE. They had no clue exactly what was going to happen, only an idea which was probably based on the analysis of data garnered from the ASS-1's emergence into the Solar System 10 years beforehand, and computer simulations based on the understanding of the ASS-1's technology. I'm not saying, as several of you (especially Keith) that the crew is stupid, just that they weren't completely sure of what to expect. -
HERE is CWModel's Sara Nome scratch build-up. It should help you get an idea. I know it's given me one...

evil flying aircraft carriers from space?
the white drew carey replied to dedalus001's topic in Movies and TV Series
IIRC- It was the human's inexperience with folding which lead them to fold so close to the surface of the Earth and drag everything with them. Even Britai expresses disbelief that anyone would preform a fold so close to a planet. IE- Folding never done before = Inexperience. -
evil flying aircraft carriers from space?
the white drew carey replied to dedalus001's topic in Movies and TV Series
I don't think it was that bad. I liked how the human's inexperience led to them dragging most of South Ataria island and the two carriers out to Pluto with the Macross. Since there were no ARMD's around, waste not want want not. Let's attach these perfectly fine carriers instead. -

It could also be a gag. Sight gags are abound in Macross. -
Exactly what I was going to say.

Film adaptations of SF literature
the white drew carey replied to ewilen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
IIRC, there's a big hoopla over the thought that a previous iteration of the film by a different director would've possibly been much better, and much cheaper. I am kind of biased though, because I think David Lynch is terribly over-rated. -
I started playing Xenosaga with hight but quickly learned that is one of the most boring games I've ever played. That said, I really didn't like the generic anime desings of the first, but I also don't particularly care for the generic "lifelike" designs of the second.

No worries!!! I know you weren't calling me "dumb"!!! It's OK, mate!!! I was just trying to import the idea that this is, I believe, a fledgling project that will take a while until it reaches fruition. PG2 is a good game, even though I only got to play it once at my bro-in-law's house (before he was my bro-in-law), I see what you're getting at, though. Let's hope that Roycommi's Macross ELS project is able to become all that it can be.

Robotech and HG license debates
the white drew carey replied to Roy Focker's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Surprisingly they must not be minding the store again because the Robotech Pool Cleaner is still in business. -
Yeah, then you end up with engrish: "Plo-Toel-Cullah-Chaa?!?" and "Tranza-Foramah-shun!!!" Seriously, the original Japanese with subs truly makes the moment. As with most dubs (even today) the voice actors simply cannot, or do not, capture the emotion of the scenes. I think there are several good dubs out there (Patlabor I, II and WXII, Spirited Away, What A Girl Wants), but overall the voice acting kind of sucks. Oh well. I won at Trvial Pursuuit LotR Edition tonight, so I'm happy.

I can't directly answer for Roycommi (who is doing about 99.9% of the work for this), but I think the intention is to do a direct translation of the original game. Afterwards, the sky is the limit. I, personally, am having a blast working with my man Roycommi and hpe that once he has a system in place we can work on other scenarios based on the Macross universe (included the VF-9... my favorite). But I think it'll be awhile until there is a multiplayer version. First, and foremost, I see this as a way to bring a hard-to-find Macross game to the fans (one which I, personally, have never played) simply to encourage the fandom. We'll have to see what happens, but I think it would be cool to eveolve into a multiplayer version. Hell, I'm not going to go "dumb" when it comes to drawing anytime soon, so you know that Roycommi can always depend on me for that!!!

Film adaptations of SF literature
the white drew carey replied to ewilen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
2001 is an interesting situation. Yes, it was based on The Sentinel, which has been mentioned by Gobotfool. But the book clearly culminates around Saturn, not Jupiter like the movie. And all subsequent books in the series (2010, 2063 and 3001) center on Jupiter. Why... Why? Why!!?!?!?!! Because Kubrick wasn't satisfied with the FX for Saturn, so he had them redo everything for Jupiter instead. Clarke just flowed with the punches and altered everything. This has just been a little bit of trivia, to "wow" your friends. As to sci-fi made into movies that I'm happy with (as opposed to simply enjoying)? I'd have to say there is only one: The Tripods. a BBC series based on The Tripods Trilogy by John Christopher (The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead and The Pool of Fire.) Although the series focused more on the first book, it definitely had significant (and directly translated) parts from the books. Sci-Fi's adaptations (thus far) of the Dune works have been fairly well done. CoD should've been sperated as the two books were , but by being a longer mini-series, it simplpy covered the same work under a common name. Blade Runner is well done because, even though it changes the original story, it does keep the same idea upon which the novel was founded (unlike Running Man or SST). -
Roycommi- Working great! The problem of the tiles ending up outside of the border doesn't happen anymore, but the Regults still do it. Also, what resolution are you running at? The artwork I've done looks very pixelated, at least on my Mac. I've been atad busy and haven't gotten much of a chance to work on this for the past couple of days, but I plan on getting things up and running shortly. Once again, I thank you greatly for this project and, more importantly, allowing me to be a part of it. I'm having fun doing something I enjoy (which sure beats purchasing for Accuweather!!!).

Well, Bicentennial Man is a bad example, because the novel it's based off of does suck. Before you get the wrong idea, though, let me explain: The Bicentennial Man, the movie, is actually based off of the Asimov/Silverberg novel The Positronic Man which, in itself, is a novelization of the original Asimov short story The Bicentennial Man (have I lost ye yet? ). I really, really disliked the novel because it added too much junk. The short story, on the other hand, is, IMHO, one of the best peices of literature ever written. NERV- Starship Troopers and I, Robot follow the typical Hollywood concept of taking the names and the most basic elements of plot from a good book and changing around the story in order to make it Popcorn accessible. I'll admit that it's a fun movie. But it's pretty stupid compared to the book (ewilen- I'll still have to respectfully disagree. the movie only pays lip-service to the concepts raised in the book, and in no way truly embraces the lesson). In other words, I really would recommend reading the books as well. Especially Starship Troopers. If you do, you'll realise that if the movie was done like the book, it could've been possibly one of the best war/commentary/sci-fi/action movies of all time. Plus it features a detailed, realistic, description of powered armor (possibly one of the first). Instead it ended up being 90210 in space with giant cockroaches (in fact, the broad who plays Dizzy [who, in the novel, was a man and died in the first pages of the book] actually was on 90210*!!!). Another prime example of this syndrome is The Running Man. Arnold Schwarzenegger in tights running away from crazed hockey players, fat guys in christmas-light dune buggies and Minnesota's Governer, The Body. The Running Man is another movie which would've done much, much better had it been more faithfully adapted from the novel. I highly recommend The Running Man as well. Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing I, Robot as a mini-series on sci-fi. Each episode comprising one of the short stories. That would be the bomb. *she's the older college professor who seduced Brandon for a couple of episodes. Yes, I know this crap.

Actually, Toynami couldn't do that because now they'd be accountable to the very company who provides the license to them. And I don't think BigWest would be happy if Toynami was ganking Yamato's molds without dishing out some cash to Yamato as well.

I just watched the trailer. This movie is going to be horrible. It'll be just as bad, if not worse, as Starship Troopers. ewilen says I have to disagree. Verhooven took the concepts in the book and made them outlandish parodies of cold-war era fears of fascism. Starship Troopers as a stand-alone film is funny and enjoyable in it's popcornish way. Starship Troopers as an adaptation of the book is nearing blasphemy.

MW needs to clean house
the white drew carey replied to pfunk's topic in MW Site News & Member Feedback
With the Mod to Member ratio being so extreme, it's sometimes hard to moderate the board simply for topical issues, let alone policing for out of line members. I usually keep my cool, and only resort to "heated debate" when arguing something. In fact, ever since Wrylac left, the only person who gets me steamed is RC, his pathetic threads and those flash movies of his. Oh yeah, AgentONE steams me. But in other ways. -
Is this a different VF-4 than the one you recasted before?

Besides, Will Smith IS NOT Elijah Bailey, either in concept (it wouldn't work because Bailey is Grumpy, unhappy and out of shape when we first meet him), or in reality (because Smith's character is Del Spooner). I don't know. I have a strong feeling this is going to end up like Starship Troopers a horrid adaptation of a great book.
