  1. Huh? The law should be written so that kind of obvious money-grubbing is highly punished. SLM had all of the time in the world to bring attention to this but, of course, waited until after the film is released. I call shenanigans!
  2. Nice site. I like what you have done. However, I am nothing if not critical: I would definitely go back and edit your existing descriptions, both for spelling and grammar. Also, I like the color scheme, but the show titles are very hard to read. Keep up the good work, and keep the obscure anime coming (I never thought I'd hear of Justy again)!
  3. Good point on his track record for sci-fi, although I'd still have to disagree with you on Kingdom of Heaven, even the Director's Cut. I am a medievalist who particularly studies the Crusades, and even then I went into it not expecting anything faithful to history (a la Gladiator) and, even then, I was disappointed. We'll see how Prometheus pans out but, to be honest, It looks to be the same slow boiler as Alien, and I can't think of how he can improve on the formula. Alien is one of THE BEST horror films ever, even though it is a sci-fi.
  4. I'm going to hold onto my reservations about this. While Ridley Scott has made some of the best films ever (Alien, Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down), he has also been involved in a bunch of clunkers (1492: Conquest of Paradise, Kingdom of Heaven, A Good Year). Heck even Robin Hood was on track to being awesome until he came in and basically rewrote the story into a typical Robin Hood remake (with Higgins Boats, for some reason) and screwed it all up. I think that this announcement coming on the heels of his re-visitation to the Alien franchise with Prometheus is a bad sign.
  5. Is is bad that, every time I see the title for this movie, I get the Duck Tales song stuck in my head, except the chorus goes "Red Tails! Ah-wooo-ooo"?
  6. Yeah, it's a great ship to visit. We went to the Garden State Craft Brewers Beer Festival three years in a row. The price of admission gets you the walking tour of the ship (saw something new every time) and at the end of the tour, a beer festival on the helipad. We "got lost" from the tour's path a couple of times. Once we got caught but I started talking with the guy and he realized I wasn't just screwing around and was truly interested in the ship, so he took us on an indirect route to get back to the tour path. Didn't see anything awe-inspiring except for a peek into the grandeur of the ship itself.
  7. Actually, I would recommend jumping into ADWD right away. ADWD and AFFC are concurrent for most of what happens, and then ADWD keeps going about 2/3 of the way through with the AFFC storyline joining in. It will probably be better with AFFC fresh in your mind. You can watch the whole first series when you are done with the first book.
  8. Yeah, there'll be a point where it will either have to be CGI or camera trickery for the direwolves. I also hope they play up the wolves' importance, because they seemed to be a bit marginalized in season 1.
  9. For those who didn't know, BlueBolt, the visual effects house for the first season of GoT, has posted a short video showcasing what their work. It is a neat little video, but can be kind of spoilerish... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkptadiDABo&feature=player_embedded Regretfully for BlueBolt (but maybe good for us) is that their services have not been retained for season 2, as it was determined that they were too small to handle the visual effects load needed. Let us hope this includes some large-scale army action (Massive can easily put together a nice aerial view), as a common complaint about season 1 was the description of large armies on the move or at battle, and yet all we see is a line of about 40 Dothraki horsemen... Secondly, I just finished A Dance with Dragons last night (unrelenting spoilers below):
  10. Yeah, I think that is a pretty weak interpretation of the Megaroad. It could be done a whole lot better.
  11. I wouldn't mind seeing something about the Purple Heart Battalion. Maybe a mini-series like Band of Brothers... but not The Pacific. That was weak.
  12. I'll see it. Plus, maybe this will inspire someone who had no friggin' clue about the Tuskegee Airmen to look into more.
  13. In the first explosion video- was that newlyweds getting their photo taken in front of the tumbler?!?
  14. Looks like a nice kit. I've always enjoyed the mecha design, if not the game (not a fan of side-scrolling shooters). Keep us updated on the build, yo.
  15. It hurt me to make this almost as much as it will hurt you to look at it.
  16. But then why call it "Akira"? Just call it "Fred" or something and be on their way.
  17. I linked to the trailer on FB with the note: This movie is either going to be stupid and suck, or stupid and awesome. I am hoping it is the latter. It looks like too much campy fun not to be good!
  18. Uff-da. I mean, Steve Cloves ain't terrible, but I don't know much about the director because, frankly, I've had no desire to see any film he's done. Just give it to Zach Snyder and get it over with.
  19. I have more hope for a Voltron live-action not sucking as I do for an Akira one.
  20. Hey MWers. I've been looking for valuable insight on print on demand (POD) services for t-shirts but, to be honest, who knows how much you can trust a random internet site? So I thought I would post her on MW because, whenever I have asked for advice before, I've always gotten frank and honest answers from all of you. Anyhow, I am currently using Printfection (www.printfection.com) but I have had too many problems with incorrect items being shipped, skewed printing, packages disappearing, and the fact that the images don't really look too hot. Their customer service has always been fast and friendly, and has never failed to resolve a problem (although one took almost 3 months to finally resolve), but the fact that I have to contact customer service on nearly every order is a sign in and of itself, you know? I was wondering if anyone had any good experiences with either Printfection, the other two major POD companies: Cafepress (www.cafepress.com) and Zazzle (www.zazzle.com), or if there was another company that you have gone with. My goal is to, possibly, move my TWDC Studios store to another company. The benefits of Printfection and Zazzle are that they allow you to create a store for free, while Cafepress only allows a set amount of items before you have to start paying for your store. Cafepress and Printfection will ship internationally, but the rates can be tremendous. Zazzle has multiple international sites so that, if the seller wishes to set up stores in multiple countries, the s&h costs can be much cheaper for the buyers. Thanks in advance for any insight/help/advice you can provide!
  21. Well, see, that is where you are wrong. My eyes are fine and my head is A-OK. Thanks for asking, though. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the G1 designs that couldn't have been modernized in a much more effective and pleasing fashion. Face it, the movie designs are just bad mecha. They are the spiritual descendents of Robot Jox, with the whole greeblie box thrown in for good measure. The Citroen commercial (part of a series) is probably has the highest productions values of the vids I posted, and looks great. The design still keeps that G1 feel while updating it without looking retarded like Bay's TFs. And, too be honest, if you don't like that New Beetle one, you have no soul.
  22. I'm not usually very cruel here on MW, but for all of the people who are saying the G1-style TFs wouldn't work in live-action format, well... you are pretty silly. There are great examples of fan-made and TV commercial transformer videos using G1-similar styling that look ONE MILLION TIMES BETTER than the (s)crapyard TFs Bay brought us. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IL5c2DUnYno&feature=related (a classic) www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hs2Q-KaeICQ (the *real* Bumbleebee) www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDmUWd6ukOc (this photocopier looks better than every TF-movie design) www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwBUYJly1zU&feature=related (hey, it actually looks like Optimus) www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiHNUaQ7cCo&feature=related (heck, so does this one) Sure, most of these are still low-budget, but the designs are solid enough for the big screen. The problems with Bay's TFs is that A) They don't look very much like their vehicle counterparts (which is always one of the greatest joys of TF), B) even thought Bay was going for a more 'realistic' transformation, I think they rely even more on magic than the real TFs; and C) they suffer from Amerimecha-syndrome (ie- mecha designs that look like sh!t). The thing is, Bay has now sold these so-called 'millions of new fans' on a bunch of terrible mecha designs simply because he thought he knew better. To be honest, the TF movies are the only things in the franchise that make me ashamed to have a Decepticons tattoo.
  23. I liked how it ended. There are, of course, variations from the books, but not enough to turn me off. One of the biggest complaints is the lack of battle scenes, and this on I'd have to agree with. Even if they just get a short aerial view running on Massive or something so that we can get a feel for the size of these armies. When the Khalasar was marching, they were supposed to be about 40k people, so a quick CGI shot of that would've been cool. I cannot find it right now, but I think this complaint was brought up with D&D, and they acknowledged that it may be fixed in season 2.
