The computer and electronics super geek thread
VF-19 replied to Dante74's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Oh, and if you need to save that $600 or so from the second videocard, get a motherboard that supports crossfire (pretty much every intel based board), get the one 5970, and when you see the second on sale, get it then. The nice thing about crossfire is that the system isn't really picky on what you have installed in the computer. It'll work with, say, one 5970, and one 4870, albeit, it will only work at the speed of the slowest card (the 4870). -

Since we're talking serious cash, how about a pair of Radeon 5970's to start (4 gpus on two boards)? Back it up with 4-8 gigs of RAM, and a high end quad-core cpu, and you've got something that won't go obselete for a few years. If you need to save $100 after all that, you could use on-board sound instead of a sound card. -
Simple: You carry over both, and get to see different outcomes.

Or, better still, DIY *insert favourite F-14 squadron* I'm thinking of doing mine up in either the Sundowners or Wolfpack. Not sure yet. I'd do a Jolly Rodgers, but then it would be simpler to get a Roy 1S.

Oh, just to compare: Compare the damage the F-14 takes from the SV-51's gun to the damage the VF-0 (pilot excluding, of course) takes. The armour does its job in keeping the plane together. Just wondering, however, on average, how many "hits" does it take to kill a zentradi pod anyways. The GU-11 only has around 200 rounds or so, so I'm going to assume it's not much.

I can second Chronocidal's report. I had no problems taking the valk apart to so that I could properly apply the superglue to the shoulder. Putting it back together was just as easy. Just keep everything nearby as you're working, and it'll all go smoothly!

Pics of my Hikaru VF-1A shoulders. As you can see, one is broken, but being held together with superglue. The second has a clear stress line showing, indicating it's going to break sometime in the future. Thank goodness for my macro lens!

Put the pairs of RAM in the matching pairs of coloured slots (ie put both in the blue slots, if your RAM slots are blue and white). If, when you boot up, you don't see the total RAM you're installed, move the sticks around (shutting down the computer of course). The purpose of the different coloured slots is for enabling dual channel memory mode. -

Oh, just a FYI about cpu cooler warranties. Just keep everything together, and as long as you return everything together, with evidence of use (IE, you mate the cooler to the CPU once, then take it off), there's no way for AMD or Intel to tell if you've use the non-stock cooler. -
Yikes... I'm kinda shuddering at the thought of the stresses on that single pivot point...

The more I play this, the more I like Dr. Solus. Also, Grunt is downright cool. Like Worf, only more violent!
-
I went and looked at a few pictures of the A-5... Does the whole rudder actually pivot, or is it like most planes where only the "back half" pivots?
-
I don't think they'll destroy the jigs this time. Remember Cheney isn't the Defense Secretary anymore. Plus, Grumman didn't make the F-22.

At least he didn't say the F-14 is ugly. There is some potential for redemption. If he had said the F-14 is ugly... Well, let's just say my response would be very, VERY, NSFW.

Yes, I do hate it when the exacto slips. But then I put a bit of my blood on my model so that it gets it blood sacrifice (usually on an inside surface that will never see light).

Those combiners look like they could be cool. I just need to see bigger pictures, and perhaps see it in person before I pass final judgment.

I'm using a Badger 155 at the moment. I know it's suction feed, but it's miles above my Badger 200. It doesn't need any tools to take apart, and it's simple to clean and maintain. Heck, it even came with a little metal cup that plugs into the suction feed, and that comes in handy from time to time.

Not soon enough... If it's not in my hands right now, it's not soon enough.

Heck of a way to start off the game. Want to play more, but I've got to go to bed... Stupid night crew job...
-
It should be activating on steam any time now... I pre-purchased, and pre-loaded mine recently. Can't wait!

The first two are simply anime magic. Just don't think too much into it. The third one is actually can be explained by physics. Basically, he used too much fuel (or energon, take your pick) to accelerate to Cybertron, that he does not have enough to decelerate, given the amount of mass he's trying do bring to a stop. So, in order to decelerate, he needs to get rid of enough mass (aka kick off the damaged Decepticons) in order to land safely. Truthfully, he was probably colluding with Starscream, as he's the one crowning him in the coronation ceremony.

My father and I did mount the wires behind the walls (and through the attic) for the rear speakers on the 5.1 system when we installed it. It's deceptively simple. Before you make a single cut in the wall, plan it out as much as you can. Make note of where electrical wires are (get the proper tool to sense them), make note of where the studs are, and then, only then, start cutting. Also, if you're going to route wires in the attic, don't do it during the summer. Early spring or fall would be best, as it won't be brutally hot in there...

Well, hopefully it won't be too much longer... If I'm not done this Viper by the time I get a Mk 2, I'm going to put it on hold. I really, really want to build the Mk2 really, really fracking badly. Now, where's my Galactica and Pegasus in plastic!

I don't mind the fact that movies are moving towards 3D, but what I DON'T want to see are those gimick 3D shots. Avatar was great in 3D, but it won't look stupid in 2D, like Monsters Vs. Aliens.

Back on my workbench... Another Viper! No pics, but I'm going to attempt pre-shading on it, and paint the orange stripes onto the body. If you guys get a call from a mental institution, you'll know what happened to me . Can't wait for the Mk-2 Vipers. They should be in my hands by the end of February (although HLJ has a note that they expect them by the end of January).
