Anybody Thinks That Sk Needs To Redesign The Vf-1?
Mr March replied to Phalanx's topic in Movies and TV Series
I know you're new to the MacrossWorld forums Phalanx, your join date and number of posts make that clear Just keep in mind the audience as well. Most members at MacrossWorld are adamant against "tampering." Even if tampering is not what you propose, it can be easily misconstrued as such in a room full of Macross purists, known for their knee-jerk reactions to anything even remotely resembling say...Harmony Gold. It's like saying "I'd love to redesign salad to include beef" in a message board full of vegans As for the abrasiveness of members, I'm afraid you'll most likely need to grow a thicker skin. Members who give you the benefit of the doubt or take time to explain the ropes to newbies are few. Most of us will just bark at ya. Woof, woof! -
Glad you enjoyed it

Robotech: Live Action Movie!?!?!?!?
Mr March replied to valkyrie_cadman's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
After seeing those posts, I'm now getting a sub-Underworld-quality prediction of doom -
I've read about the show, but never seen an episode. From what people have said, the original daily strip was a very intelligent, very risque commentary on social/political problems and/or little-considered strangeness. The television show by comparison suffered tampering along the way and as a result comes across as merely a forgettable diversion lacking the power of the strip's original concept. If I can ever see the show for free, I'll probably check it out

It sounds like maybe you might be new to message boards in general (or perhaps those forums you've been on are very tame). As a general rule of the internet (not just MacrossWorld), people are a lot more forward, blunt, argumentative, and harsh online than they would ever be in real life. Basically, the anonymity and distance offered by the internet means many people feel ten feet tall and bulletproof, able to say whatever the hell they want without fear of reprisal (ie. a good smack in the mouth). Call it the ultimate freedom of speech or the destruction of tact, but best to be aware of it. For my part I want to assure you I was merely stating my opinion. My opinion was the VF-0 is for all intents and purposes a modern VF-1, had it been designed in 2006 (with some deviations made to fit the Macross Zero story of course). As for redesigning the VF-1, it could be done like Hajime Katoki-style from Gundam. But remember that unlike Gundam, Macross mecha designs must be variable and this places some constraints upon the parameters of the mecha. Change the VF-1 too much and you might as well just call it a different Valkyrie, especially if you alter the transformation type (from solid nose VF-1 style to say variable nose YF-19 style). Consider also that to many Macross fans, the VF-1 Valkyrie is a timeless design, like the X-Wing from Star Wars, the Dropship from Aliens, or Kaneda's bike from Akira. These are "THE" classic vehicle designs in science fiction, designs that enjoy longevity and praise and set the standard for future generations of creative artists/designers. They belong untouched and untampered from an anthropologic view. -
Btw, the VF-0 is perfect for your website header. It focuses on the new Macross and also differentiates your website from the norm. I vote to keep it, only clean it up a bit

I'm thrilled that you've created a website. One thing the Macross community needs is more dedicated websites. I hope the direction you've chose works and I'm interested to see how the open source aspect works. Best of luck, I'm really hoping all works well for your new website. I really need to get myself a scanner so I can put my Macross fanbooks to use.

IMO, Macross does not need to explain the aircraft design inconsistancies. We are all aware that aircraft design advances over time and that Macross would appear much different if originally released in 2006 as opposed to 1982. -

It's hard. Remember, Kawamori and Co. have to make anime that sells. Modern mecha fans want modern mecha designs. Creating a modern anime with 20 year old mecha designs won't impress audiences. The art of mecha design has progressed far too much. The VF-1 has enjoyed more longevity as an early 80's mecha simply because of the nature of military aircraft. Real world military jets 40-50 years old still look esthetically pleasing to this day (the 1960's era SR-71 Blackbird arguably being the most visible aircraft still "seen" in popular culture to this day). Thus the VF-1 enjoys areodynamic longevity. Even still, young kids won't flock to it unless you make it look better; hence the VF-0. -

Where is the logic in that? VF-0 is nice, but as a Valk before Vf-1... 374900[/snapback] It's not logical, that's the point. Anachronistic vehicle design has always been a problem with science fiction prequels produced decades after the original. Some sci-fi franchises have attempted to explain this contradiction by stating the prequel era was more influenced by artisans and esthetic designers as opposed to eras that followed, dominated by praticality and economics (such as Star Wars, original trilogy vs. prequel era). Macross however has made no such attempt to explain the obvious design contradictions between eras (and doesn't need to do so in my opinion). As a result, the VF-0's visual appearance is anachronistic in the design chronology of the Macross universe, appearing far more areonautically advanced than the VF-1. -

The VF-0 basically is an updated VF-1. Granted, the in-universe fiction and design compromises talk of a less advanced variable fighter. However, esthetically the VF-0 is a modernized VF-1. You can even see Kawamori took design features from Macross Plus era Valkyrie fighters and incorporated them into the VF-0, particularly design elements of the YF-19. -
I LOVE IT! Usually I hate all commercials, but this is an absolute riot! Thanks for posting, I was on the floor laughing

This has "Wing Commander" quality of filmmaking all over it. -
The horror...the horror

No problem. PM sent!

Hmmm, I think that was "Loose Moose", the cowboy character.

I meant quality on par with a Yamato 1/60 VF-0, but in a 1/72 scale. However, I want a YF-19/YF-21 much, MUCH better than the current 1/72 line. THanks for the correction.
