Seto Kaiba Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago Watched Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld today. If I had to pick two words to describe it, those words would be "unremarkable" and "unnecessary". It's another Dave Filoni Star Wars animated title marked by all his usual creative excesses and his "fanservice first" writing style. Raspy-voiced Sith assassin Asajj Ventress and walking Western movie reference Cad Bane were clearly chosen becaue they were fan favorite minor characters in The Clone Wars and not because Dave Filoni and Matt Michnovetz had any story about either of them that was worth telling. Spoiler Asajj Ventress's story quite literally starts with her coming back from the dead through the power of a Jedi's True Love™️ and Plot Convenience. It's not explained or in any way justified in-story, it's just A Thing That Happens. She apparently decides the best thing to do with her literal new lease on life is to be a bouncer at a travel agency in the middle of nowhere? Until an Order 66 survivor padawan rolls in trying to mind trick his way offworld to find other Jedi going into exile. So she decides to help him, and they do random buddy cop sort of nonsense for two episodes. Cad Bane's story is a very generic, very form letter Western-style origin and revenge story about how Cad Bane started the life of crime that would eventually make him the feared and respected bounty hunter he was in The Clone Wars. Considering it takes about 2/3 of the story for him to reach his familiar appearance, you could almost say it really is an origin story for Cad Bane's hat and toothpick as much as the character. The extremely halfhearted attempt to give Cad Bane a sad/sympathetic origin story like so many other villains (e.g. the Wicked Witch of the West, Cruelle de Vil, etc.) is a complete waste of time. Adding backstory removes the mystique that made him a cool villain in The Clone Wars... especially now that we know his name is real name "Colby" and he's a deadbeat dad. Quote

I accept that the animated stuff is made for a young crowd and I just skip it. Outside of Visions. Quote

Outside of Visions. That "young crowd" is strictly imaginary. This is a spin-off from a 2008 TV series. Anyone familiar with these characters in their original context is likely at least in their mid-20s.🤣 Quote

Let’s be realistic, they’re probably mostly the parents of the 20 something’s that were trying to introduce Star Wars to their younglings. They’re probably still trying with the grandkids though Quote
Duke Togo Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago (edited) My (half) brother is 27. Ahsoka is his favorite character and he loves all the animated stuff. Pretty much the only SW media he consumes. I haven't talked to him about this latest show, but I'm sure it's the kind of thing he'd enjoy. Edited 3 hours ago by Duke Togo Quote

Must be my apparent youthfulness talking (😅), but I'm not sure "kids" and "young" are words I'd use to describe the Star Wars: the Clone Wars fandom. Unless, of course, it were in a sentence like "they probably have young kids by now". Tales of the Underworld is aimed at people who were tweens and teens when The Clone Wars came out... almost 17 years ago. Musings on whether 30 really is the new 20 aside, the Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld series is very much a Star Wars series by and for the most die-hard of Star Wars fans. It doesn't really have anything for the casual audience because its stories are so heavily dependent on fanservice. Both stories feel like they were written more to pad out the Wiki pages for their respective characters than because there was anything worthwhile to do with the characters. Worse even than the usual Filoni fanservice-first halfassery. Quote

Yes. They're the ones who have consumed most of the animated content. Like my brother (who has never seen a single episode of Andor). Quote
