Macross Chronicle Translations

Hi Sketchley,

Just wondering, do you have plans to continue with your translation of TiAS M+?

I would love to know what the book says about the VF-17.

Graham

It's still on the "to do" list. Though, that section will have to wait until after my current `target` the VF-5000. And I should finish wading through the VF-1 section, too.

<sigh> not enough hours in the day.

I've been getting sidetracked making stats for the ol' RPG:

Mechanic: MF Citizen 03a VF-25F Messiah (partial translation): http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=2541.msg38776#msg38776

The good/bad news is that I'm currently targeting the VF-25, and am locked onto the Super Pack, Armour Pack, and Aegis Pack. We'll see how far along we'll get before the steam runs out.

Oh, and yes, the "targets" of the VF-25F sheet were entries that looked like they'd provide the most *new* information for the effort. The fighter mode section makes me wonder how different the other variants are... especially with the talk of being a "picky" airframe :!:

8 reaction missiles? wuzzah!

Translation note: if it's not clear, the leg micro-missile launchers are carrying two loads (1 load + reload). I had a bit of trouble trying to find the right way to express that with the minimum number of words.

Wow... it's been about a month and a half since the last translation. Time flies!

I've also translated the titles of all of the Variable Fighter Technology sheets. I guess the quickest and easiest way to view them is this MC TOC of mine: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/Sketchley/portal/Chronicles.htm

... and finished (see preceeding post for linky).

I'm guessing that there are probably other mistakes. Nevertheless, it's great that a) there's a list of corrections, and b) a list of "missing" sheets.

[...] The main improvement from the YF-21, the brainwave control system BDI (Brain Direct Image), which was its greatest feature, was significantly simplified, accompanying a manual operating system within a corresponding cockpit.

[...]

The cockpit is primarily manually controlled but is equipped with the brainwave control system for assistance. The seat is equipped with non-contact connector for brainwave control.

'k... I realize I'm dusting off an old thread that hasn't seen activity for a while, but this isn't worth making a new thread and it's strictly relevant to the above-quoted translation. That the production model VF-22 uses a limited version of the Brain Direct interface System for operator assistance came as a surprise to us when we first read azrael's translation, but it turns out it's actually not a new development.

After my discussion with Talos about the VF-171's size, I was idly flipping through Macross Dynamite 7: Mylene Beat and happened to pause on the page where Gamlin is doing pre-flight checks on his VF-22S before going to look for Basara. Lo and behold, the four items on his pre-flight checklist were the fold booster, verniers, thrust vectoring flaps and the BDS. The collected edition was published in August 1998, so clearly this has been there for a while... maybe that's where Chronicle's writers sourced it from?

I'm a bit surprised that the writers completely neglected the forearm missile launchers. Nice to learn that the gun pod also has a removable magazine.

I feel like I want to say "Merry Christmas" to you all, what with all these translations these past few days (the kids are at the grandparents' house if you're wondering).

Semi-translated: the other ships on the page, the Standard Battle Line Battleship's armaments, and added a few spot-translations for the ships on the preceding page: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=2113.msg31314#msg31314

Finished: Mechanic: M7 Baroota 06b Baroota Fleet (entirely)

(linky in preceding post)

What I find most interesting are the little hints about the state of the Baroota Fleet before its encounter with the Macross 7 Fleet - specifically not having any carriers.

Also, in glancing at the relevant section in Kazutaka Miyatake Design Works, it can be inferred more or less that some to most of the Baroota ships are more or less copies of Unified Forces ships. Eg: Miyatake pretty much states that the Vanguard Frigate is based on the Northampton Frigate.

No problem! Appreciation of one's efforts are much appreciated. Not to mention motivating.

Continuing the "VF-14 content" translations:

Mechanic M7 Baroota 01 Fz-109 Elgaazorn: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=2674.msg41233#msg41233

(interesting parts on the A sheet, and VF-14 stuff only on the second)

Glossary 20: VF-3000 Crusader - VF-4G Lightning III: http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=2349.msg41230#msg41230

(in addition to the VF-14, also did the VF-3000, VF-11MAXL Kai, VF-XX, VF-9).

Finished: Game and Advanced Valkyrie #4 [VF-14 Vampire, Neo-Guraaji, Variable Guraaji]]

Alas, despite getting some interesting tid bits of info on the Variable Guraaji, the majority of it is about the Dancing Skull (Max, Miria, Moaramia).

Mind you, it ends up painting the Unified Government in a decidedly unfriendly colour: creating a subjegation/repression unit to repress people who revolt against it's authority.

Thank you. Appreciation is always appreciated.

Not sure when I'll be able to tackle the last half. Though, now that the Great Mechanics.DX article is off my plate, it should be "sooner".

Completed: Mechanic: SDFM UN 08a: MBR-04-Mk VI Tomahawk

http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=2710.msg41934#msg41934

I am a bit surprised at how much content from the Hobby Hand Book is used in the MC article - especially given that Technology 02b Destroid (development, etc.) gave the impression that the development history of the Destroids was completely rewritten.

Maybe it was just the Earth Trekkers that got written out?

Yes, the history is rewritten. Many dates were modified (need to update period 1999-2009 about destroids in the Compendium).

Modifications from MC:

2000

April (MC explains that march is correct too)

Research on anti-giant combat weaponry systems Battroid and Destroid begins. (old entry)

December

Completion of the first specimen of anthropomorphic armament anti-extraterrestrial of Destroid type. (new entry)

2001

August

First use of the Destroid in actual fight and against human. (new entry)

*September

Trial production of the anti-giant ground-combat weaponry system Destroid begins. (out of date entry, disappeared from MC)

2004

June

The MBR-07 is upgraded by the addition of arm coming from the series of Destroid MBR-04. (new entry)

2005

*February

Trial production of the MBR-07-Mk I begins. (old entry, disappeared from MC)

2006

The Anti-U.N forces develop the Destroid Octos. (new entry)

June

*Decision made to formally adopt the MBR-04 series of Destroids. Mass production begins. (old entry, disapperead from MC. Out of date?)

2007

February

Rollout of HWR-00-MkIP Monster. (new entry)

2008

Rollout of ADR-03 Mk.III Cheyenne and use in actual fight. (new entry)

June

*MBR-07-Mk I Spartan upgraded to Mk II with improved TV searching system and added anti-air weaponry. (old entry, disapperead from MC)

Completed Technology 03A: Emigrant Ship

It does an excellent job of filling in the "great blank" in the time-line with some broad brushstrokes - and explaining the purpose of the SDFN series in the process.

Completed Plus UN 05A: Flying Wing [8-Engine* All-Wing Giant Bomber]

* numerous other possible renditions, but engine is the one that makes the most sense. Other variations are 8 were launched (doesn't make sense, because less than 8 were seen in M+), launches 8 drones (doesn't fit, as they only carry 4), and so on and so forth.

Completed Mechanic: MF NUN 03a VF-171EX Nightmare Plus EX

Took 1.5 years to get around to finishing the back half (one point five years o.O;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; ), but it's done.

Some interesting revelations. Most of it not entirely unexpected.

All this talk about a potential reprint of MC has motivated me to wade into the back-log of translations to type up:

Mechanic: M7 UN 12a: Macross 7 Fleet Aircraft (Transports):

http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=2850.0

Alas, not much hard data. Though, it's nice to know that the VF transports can carry up to 30 people. Makes them kinda useful for emergency evacuations and things like that.

Mechanic: D7 UN 01a: VF-5000 Star Mirage:

http://www.macrossroleplay.org/forums/index.php?topic=2851.0

Incomplete. Something I found on my HD. Might as well post what I've done so far, as it'll probably be a while before I can get back to finishing it (and forgetting about the part that's been done) ...

Oh... some members of the forum that these are linking to are indicating difficulty accessing the website in the past week. If the page doesn't load (or grinds for an inordinately long time), their solution is to refresh the page a couple of times and/or put the entire URL into the address bar and directly access the pages.

That's a cool article. One of the most interesting things that I see is the explanation of the bio-plant. I always thought that Frontier was a little* TOO big. Given the size of Island 1 and that the action never gets past Island 3, why have the daisy chain of Islands? To some extent, you'd need agriculture space, true - but probably not that much. The M7 fleet only had 1 Sunnyflower...

After reading this, it seems to me that the extensive chain of Islands is likely the required biomass needed in order to achieve a true, closed "bio-plant" system. The investment in this fleet (Bilrer et al) must've been considerable, and why it stands out from other fleets.

In Movie 2, it even seems that the Galaxy Braintrust would rather take over the fleet, rather than let it be destroyed like Galaxy. Unlike Leon's actions in the series, the Braintrust opted to leave the Island chain out of harm's way when attacking the Vajra homeworld.

* Haha, too big, in Macross... :)

The impressions I get of the laser sensor is that it's a type of LADAR... but that's just speculation by me.

I count a total of 13 chairs in the Northampton class's bridge. Anyone get a different number?
