  4. The Gods Must Be Crazy Ster-Kinekor Pictures, 1980; 20th Century Fox, 1984 Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 2004 Written, produced and directed by Jamie Uys (1921-1996) Running Time: 109 minutes Rated PG for violence, slight nudity and mild language. "Aye yai yai yai yai..." - Dr. Andrew Steyn Cast N!xau (1943-2003) as Xi Marius Weyers as Dr. Andrew Steyn Sandra Prinsloo as Kate Thompson Michael Thys as M'pudi Louw Verwey as Sam Boga Nic de Jager as Jack Hind Paddy O'Byrne (1929-2013) as the Narrator "The one characteristic which really makes the Bushmen different from all the other races on Earth is that they have no sense of ownership at all. Where they live, there's really nothing you CAN own: only trees and grass and animals. In fact, these Bushmen have never seen a stone or a rock in their lives. The hardest things they know are wood and bone. They live in a gentle world, where nothing is as hard as rock, steel or concrete. "Lately, strange new things sometimes appeared in the sky: noisy birds that flew without flapping their wings." Synopsis Deep in the Kalahari Desert of Africa lives a peaceful Bushman tribe that has no concept of time, ownership, or law, as they believe the gods above have supplied everything for them. One day, while Xi is walking, an airplane drops an empty Coca-Cola glass bottle, which lands on the ground in front of him, leading the tribe to believe it as a gift from the gods. They find countless uses with the bottle, but because it is the only one available in the desert, it introduces selfishness, envy, anger, hate, and violence to the tribe. Seeing the bottle as a source of evil and unhappiness, Xi takes it and travels far to dispose of it at the edge of the world. During his journey, he meets the clumsy biologist Dr. Andrew Steyn and school teacher Kate Thompson before a band of guerrillas led by Sam Boga invade the school and hold Kate and the students hostage. "Their language has an idiosyncrasy of its own. It seems to consist mainly of clicking sounds." "The funny thing about these gods was that they couldn't speak. They could only make chattering sounds like monkeys." Lowdown It's amazing what one piece of garbage does to everyone around it. At the same time, it's amazing how such a simple film does wonders in showing the meaning of life in a rather obvious way. The Gods Must Be Crazy is heralded as one of the funniest films ever produced, but it's also one of the most educational non-documentary pieces. It shows how happy Bushmen are with their lives while "civilized men" are never content with their environment or their belongings. Both civilizations go on with their lives until a Coke bottle is introduced in the picture, causing a sudden clash of cultures that spans at least three countries. Just about everything works in this story - right down to the little random things such as Sam Boga's two henchmen who do nothing but play cards. Even Dr. Steyn's unreliable Land Rover is a character on its own, as it's a source of pure slapstick gold from Dr. Steyn's struggle to open and close border gates to Xi's driving lessons. "Sometimes they hear a thundering sound when there are no clouds. They assume the gods have eaten too much and their tummies are rumbling. Sometimes they can even see the evidence of the gods' flatulence." N!xau and the rest of the cast give stellar performances, but it's narrator Paddy O'Byrne who steals the show, as he gives witty and detailed narratives of Xi and the Bushmen's point of view. Through his voice, you can understand the Bushmen's way of life and how they depict "civilized men". "That morning, Xi saw the ugliest person he'd ever come across. She was as pale as something that had crawled out of a rotting log. Her hair was quite gruesome; long and stringy and white, as if she was very old. She was very big - you'd have to dig the whole day to find enough food to feed her. "Although it was a hot day, she was covering her body with skins that looked as if they were made from cobwebs. She was doing strange and magical things, and it struck him that she must be one of the gods. He wondered what she was doing down here on Earth. But he was glad he met her, because now he'd give the evil thing back to her and go home to his family. So he said tactfully that he didn't need the thing, and that she could have it back. But she was very rude, and she walked away." Overall, The Gods Must Be Crazy is a great addition to anyone's DVD collection - even if you have to pay an ungodly price on Amazon.com or eBay. 5. The Giver is the film adaptation of the bestselling 1993 young adult novel by Lois Lowry. It is directed by Phillip Noyce (The Saint, Salt) and stars Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites (Prince Phillip in Maleficent, Tim in Oculus), Odeya Rush (Hannah in Goosebumps), Katie Holmes (Tom Cruise's third ex), Alexander Skarsgård (Cmdr. Hopper in Battleship), Taylor Swift (overrated pop singer), and Cameron Monaghan (Chad in Malcolm in the Middle). The Giver hits U.S. theaters on August 15. Official Site
  6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo1YkF4UqEM The Guyver New Line Cinema, 1991 Directed by Screaming Mad George and Steve Wang (Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight) Based on the manga by Yoshiki Takaya (Hades Project Zeorymer) Running Time: 92 minutes Rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and strong language. Cast Jack Armstrong as Sean Barker/Guyver Mark Hamill (like no one here knows who he is...) as CIA Agent Max Reed Vivian Wu (Wenxiu in The Last Emperor, Mitsu in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III) as Mizky Segawa David Gale (1936-1991) (Dr. Hill in Re-Animator) as Fulton Balcus Michael Berryman (Skull Cowboy in The Crow, Pluto in The Hills Have Eyes) as Lisker Jimmie Walker (J. J. Evans in Good Times) as Striker Peter Spellos (Monev the Gale in Trigun, Gilliam II in Outlaw Star) as Ramsey Spice Williams-Crosby (Patrice in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Vixis in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier) as Weber Willard E. Pugh (Mayor Kuzak in RoboCop 2, Harpo in The Color Purple) as Col. Castle Jeffrey Combs (Dr. West in Re-Animator) as Dr. East David Wells as Dr. Gordon Greg Paik as Dr. Tetsu Segawa Linnea Quigley (famous B-movie scream queen) as the Scream Queen Plot Martial arts slacker Sean Barker stumbles upon an alien prototype device and bonds with it, becoming the armored warrior called the "Guyver". But now he is wanted by the Chronos Corporation, which sends its band of Zoanoids to capture him and recover the Guyver unit. Lowdown As a means to ride on the popularity of the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, a production team led by Brian Yuzna (Re-Animator, Crying Freeman) created the live-action adaptation of Yoshiki Takaya's manga Bio-Booster Armor Guyver. It had a who's-who cast of actors that every Fangoria subscriber would know. The Guyver suit was meticulously detailed, as well as most of the Zoanoids. It had the potential to be a good sci-fi film that could go toe-to-toe with Kamen Rider and Japan's tokusatsu staples. And then came the script. In an attempt to make The Guyver family-friendly, the screenplay writers resorted to slapstick comedy - especially during the fight scenes. Combined with the unbearable acting of the main cast (except Mark Hamill, who was probably here just for a paycheck) and a horrid soundtrack, the film is almost unwatchable unless you put it on Mute to appreciate some of the special effects. It's a shame the first-ever live-action Guyver turned out like this. The 1994 sequel Guyver: Dark Hero is a better product, but not without its own faults. Why the Japanese have not come up with their tokusatsu version is anyone's guess. Rating: D References The Internet Movie Database Wikipedia
  7. Did a search and found no thread for this film yet. After Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was imo a great take on the franchise the sequel is shaping up to be one awesome looking film.
  8. It's been reported that Columbia Pictures will do a live-action/CG adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog, with a darker, edgier tone for older audiences. Sega will be producing it alongside Original Film (The Fast and the Furious series). I don't know about you guys, but if this version of Sonic does not have an addiction to chili dogs and is not voiced by Jaleel White, it's not gonna work. 9. Snoopy and company return to the big screen after over 35 years. Peanuts is produced by Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox, and is directed by Steve Martino (Horton Hears a Who!, Ice Age: Continental Drift). No word on who will voice the characters, but the film will use recordings of the late Bill Melendez (1916-2008) for Snoopy and Woodstock. Peanuts premieres on November 6, 2015 Official Site

  11. Yup, Hollywood has ran out of ideas. Here's Earth to Echo, which appears to be a loose remake of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and Super 8 - with some cheap CG effects.
  12. What's a great action movie without a fight or two? Post your favorites here. To start, here's a great example: They Live (1988) Nada (Roddy Piper) discovers through a special pair of sunglasses that Los Angeles is overrun by aliens (extraterrestrial, BTW). He tries to convince Frank Armitage (Keith David) to put the glasses on, but Frank's refusal sparks a back alley brawl that is perfectly choreographed. South Park even paid homage to this scene on the episode "Cripple Fight".
  13. Mr. Peabody & Sherman is a 3D animated film based on characters from the 1960s cartoon series The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. In this film, the genius dog Mr. Peabody, along with his adopted son Sherman and a girl named Penny, must travel back in time and restore all the damage done by Sherman and Penny before the space-time continuum is destroyed. The film is directed by Rob Minkoff (The Lion King, Stuart Little 1-2) and features the voices of Ty Burrell (Phil in Modern Family, Jean-Pierre Napoleon in Muppets Most Wanted), Max Charles (young Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man), Ariel Winter (Carrie/Robin in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, young Trixie in Speed Racer), Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report), Leslie Mann (Judd Apatow's wife), Allison Janney (C. J. Cregg in The West Wing, Peach in Finding Nemo), Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs), and Stanley Tucci (George in The Lovely Bones, Joshua in Transformers: Age of Extinction). The film premiered in the UK on February 7 and opens in U.S. theaters on March 7. Official Site Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 83% Metacritic Score: 57 out of 100
  14. Does anybody else think the children book's illustrations are scarier than any recent CG monster?
  15. Not too hyped that it's a remake but it's better than no Appleseed at all. http://m.ign.com/articles/2014/02/11/first-look-appleseed-alpha
  16. Why can't Hollywood make a Predator movie like this? Is it too much to ask? And to believe this was done on a $500 budget...
  17. (never saw a topic on this before so starting this one). Hopefully this is of the same caliber as 12 Monkeys and Brazil, Terry Gilliam at his best is some of the best scifi on the screen. http://www.blastr.com/2014-1-27/new-trailer-pops-terry-gilliams-latest-crazy-sci-fi-movie
  18. Gundam Live Action Movie In The Works? "Gundam" live action movie in works? It seems so! As the Legacy Effects, the visual effects team behind movies such as "Pacific Rim" "Real Steel" "Iron Man" "The Avengers" "Avatar" and most recently "X-Men: Days of Future Past" has partnered with "Gundam" creator Yoshiyuki Tomino to make Hollywood movies based on Japanese manga and anime! According to sankakucomplex.com, "Gundam" creator Yoshiyuki Tomino will hold a press conference on January 21 to announce his partnership with Legacy Effects to "bring Hollywood movies based on Japanese anime and manga titles to a global audience". One of these titles is said to be "Gundam" though it is not sure what part of the huge "Gundam" series Legacy Effects and Yoshiyuki Tomino will make a Hollywood adaptation off. Fans of the anime are weary though due to fact that Hollywood has made adaptations of Japanese made video games/anime/manga and the results were not impressive, pointing to bombs such as "Dragonball Evolution", the live action "Tekken" and "King of Fighters" movies. However some fans are quick to note that Yoshiyuki Tomino is part of the creative process and some of story that made "Gundam" popular will still be intact. They even praised that with the help of the big budget and the superior visual effects that Hollywood can provide means that the "Gundam" movie may very well be of quality. For those who don't know the "Gundam" series is one of the biggest-if not the biggest-mecha manga/anime series in Japan. The "Gundam" franchise earned over 5 billion yen in revenue based on the sales of the toys, manga, tv shows and movies. This is not the first time a "Gundam" live action movie was made. A "Gundam" live action movie called "G-Savior" was released in 2000. It got bad reviews as it scored a 4.3 on the website IMDB. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/131360-Gundam-Creator-Tomino-Teams-With-Hollywoods-Legacy-Effects http://collider.com/gundam-movie-adaptation/

  20. Following the critical and commercial success of Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino announced another Western, titled The Hateful Eight. The title is a play on The Magnificent Seven (the American remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai). As usual with every Tarantino film, this will have Samuel L. Jackson in it. What will make this completely different from every Tarantino film is a dedicated soundtrack score. In the past, Tarantino would create a playlist of songs for a film instead of hiring a film score composer. For The Hateful Eight, legendary Italian composer Ennio Morricone (The Man with No Name Trilogy, The Untouchables) will provide the orchestral score. The Hateful Eight premieres in 70mm format theaters in Christmas 2015 and in regular theaters on January 6, 2016. 21. Thanks to Area Seven's Police Story 2013 thread and the Jackie Chan movie collection I got for Christmas, I thought it was time for a thread for it. So the movies I got in the collection are as follows: Dragon Lord, Twin Dragons, Project A and Project A2, Armour of God, AoG 2: Operation Condor, Police Story III: Supercop and The Accidental Spy. Most of these I've seen before, albeit not in a long time and three of them, Dragon Lord, Twin Dragons and Project A2. Dragon Lord was interesting inasmuch as its one of Jackie's early movies. There's lots of classic Jackie goofiness but I can't help but feel that most of what happens in the movie doesn't have much to do with the actual plot. Note: I read about this movie long before I saw it in Jackie's autobiography where it says the movie starts off with Jackie sending a note to his girlfriend via balloon. Someone must have mistranslated because that scene doesn't happen until fully half-way through the movie and it was a kite and said girl wasn't even really Jackie's girlfriend. Go figure, eh? Twin Dragons was much more interesting. Jackie plays a dual role as twin brothers separated at birth. One is a world-famous pianist and conductor and the other is a street punk. Hijinx ensue and the two are mistaken for each other. Project A: A classic Jackie movie and a well put together period piece with one of his most well known stunts. I really have to wonder how much that clock tower fall hurt, including that he had to do it more than once. Armour of God: The movie that almost killed Jackie with a stunt that wasn't much of a stunt at all. If you pay attention, you'll see that early in the movie Jackie has short hair and then later has much longer hair... to hide the surgical scars. Operation Condor: Mistankenly labeled here in the States as the first movie in the AoG duology, Condor has to be one of my fav Jackie movies. My fav moment has to be in the wind tunnel when he yells "Superman!" and flies toward one of the bad guys and punches him. Haven't seen the others just yet.
  22. After years of rumors, the live-action adaptation of Yasuomi Umetsu's controversial anime Kite is coming to theaters sometime this year. The film stars Samuel L. Jackson (like no one here knows who he is...), with India Eisley (Eve in Underworld: Awakening) as Sawa and Callan McAuliffe (young Gatsby in The Great Gatsby, Sam Goode in I Am Number Four) as Oburi. And we all know what Duke will say... Kite @ IMDb
