  1. That is assuming that the writers want to tell a story. While Macross 7 has a background storyline in which the events of the conflict with the protodevlin are told, the Firebomber part of the anime has a more slice of life structure where the focus is more on character interaction rather then any kind of plot development. This resembles the modern kuuki-kei (atmospheric type) anime where narrative has become far less important in comparison to character enjoyment.
  2. Makes sense, Anakin will hate the Jedi for allowing a guy like Krell to lead his men. The 501 will trust Jedi other then Anakin less after this operation. Wouldn't surprise me if somehow Palpatine engineered Krell's assignment in secret to harden both Anakin and the 501 for knightfall.
  3. I feel that the Krell arc is used to built up a motive for the 501 to dislike the Jedi in preparation for the slaughter inside the Jedi temple. Which seems a bit out of character until now for the honorable clone troopers even with order 66 active. Wouldn't surprise me if Krell get's offed next episode by either Rex pushed too far, or with the help of a Palpatine loyalist like Tarkin.
  4. Ranka's features translate better into figures. Sheryl seems to present a bigger challenge. A lot of sculpters like to overstretch the body too much imo, especially the otherwise great looking 1Kuji is guilty of that. The megahouse concert version probably has the best facial sculpt, maybe the megahouse action figure's face is a bit better, but I have only seen pictures of that one. Overal I think the Banpresto game prize bikini has the best proportions and the latest SQ the best pose, but both unfortunately are lower quality given their price range. Would have loved to have seen a premium version of those. I've got good hopes for the upcoming 1kuji with flag. Hope the paint job will do them justice.
  5. Hikaru's jerk-like behavior is created as a result of the akward reopening of the triangle after the series got an extension. The writers manage to do a good job under the circumstances (some of the best episodes of the series really) but at the price of Hikaru's integrity and strength of personality. I don't see that as intentional character development. The movie version is alround less likeable imo.
  6. Fraid not. The 1/8 emotion was the one that got closest to approval, but was rejected as too tacky. hehe, good to hear, that is the most important bit.
  7. Fortunately my gf loves to buy anime figures as well so that problem is not an issue for me. However, while she has no problems with nudes or risque she considers all Sheryl figures so far to be either bad sculpts, too trashy or just to plain ugly to sanction. Personally I'd love to see a flightsuit or uniform Sheryl in the Megahouse Excellent Model range, like armored Klan, or something from similar quality ranges from other manufacturers.
  8. heh, and they are the nice guys of the bunch. What does that make Isamu, Alto and Shin and Hibiki?
  9. That's true. Even among the mains Basara is one of the kinder guys. I guess his gruff manner puts some people off.
  10. Hmm, Alto x Vajra Queen. Fortunately we shall never know.
  11. Way I under stand it: the Vajra only recognize foldwaves as intelligent communication. Humans can only produce those when they sing while infected with the V-type infection. Even in that case it's not guaranteed to produce fold waves geven the failure of the other (never seen) members of the Fairie program. The fold quartz is just an amplifier, so all the human chatter send through those crystals would just be background static to them.
  12. Yes for me. It would need to be one all-inclusive package though. Both pilots plus TV Superparts, not the like the 1/60 split sale.
  13. Indeed, compare for example 50 year old Milia Genius in M7 with 50 year old Mao Nome in MF. The former looks like 30 the other like 70. I doubt the writers care much for such little details. Off course, as fans we can always explain away any differences with Misa's theory in ep. 11 SDFM: 1 hour of folding is equal to 240 hours passed on earth. That would mean a character from the Space war I era (2009) would have had to spend only 76 days in hyperspace to get to the era of Macross Frontier (2059). Bilrers search for Minmay isn't that crazy .
  14. Anime characters tend to have fairly extreme, archetypical personalities. They aren't realistic. Can't see much difference between the three. Alto is a prototype rebel without a cause: identity issues, loses his temper a lot, runs away from problems, coming of age theme. Sheryl acts like the typical highschool teen queen with hidden depth type. Ranka is an airhead type, clumsy, dense and acts overly cute. Non of them strike me as particuarly mature or childish. Klan's micro form has the typical anime kid features: oversized eyes (in regard to the rest), with shota blush on the cheeks and uses childish expressions. Ranka's design isn't more childish then Minmay's or Mylene's. Main difference is that Ranka has been more influenced by post 2000's moe characters so is loaded with mannerisms that make her look cute and helpless. I guess it depends on the viewer if you interpret that as childlike behaviour or not. It's been applied to Sheryl in the movies to a lesser extent as well. Hence anime is not realistic. Nor should real world morality be applied to these characters or the viewer. I made the comparison with dangerous employment to show that some people can freak out about sex because that is more likely to hit a sensitive spot. However no person would complain about the immorality of underage kids being put in danger because they realize it's fiction, so there is no need to freak out about implied romance between fictional teens either.
  15. All three main characters are minors. Think Ranka was one year younger then the other two. Doubt anyone would bat an eyelash at teen romances, nor is it illegal in most parts of the civilized world. More disturbing is that the SMS allows underage employees to work in hazardous occupations. Don't hear any people complain about that.
  16. Don't know if Sheryl has won anything either. The Vajra queen eloped with Alto and she's a truely massive girl (don't know about her assets though)
  17. Indeed. Also Grace controlled only one hive trough it's queen. Ranka showed us in ep 25 that there are other hives in other galaxies. Imagine the Vajra calling for back up. Even the protoculture were restricted to our own Milkyway Galaxy. The Vajra play in a higher league.
  18. Good point. The movies had the benefit of cherry picking the plotpoints of the TV-series that worked and streamlining the whole. I enjoyed how the movies managed to better integrate the triangle and Alto's family background in the overal storyline. In the TV series it was more it like Ozma and Cathy were investigating a government conspiracy while the main triangle remained separate of events till the final arc. Another thing I liked was the increased focus on the actual Frontier story rather then the triangle which at times really dominated other events in the TV-series.
  19. Saw the subbed version of the second this evening while rewatching the first one yesterday. In one word: excellent. The movie(s) present us with an alternate take on the events of the TV-series much like DYRL. Difference this time is that the movie also improves the main storyline. In my opinion the plot of the movie, while similar, makes a more sense then the TV-series and much less time is wasted on filler. Also the characters have been significantly altered in a positive way. Alto is really likable now, which I previously considered impossible, Sheryl more cmplex, vulnerable and cute, the whiny side of Ranka was removed and she's a lot less clueless. Some nifty little changes in the side cast, Grace not going Palpetine route and the shota (keep forgetting his name) was actually usefull. Captain Wilder and the bridge crew got a bit more screen time, would have been a waste not to given the top voice actors. Ozma continues being the man of the outfit. Action was excellent. The Quarter novel approach to atmospheric re-entry really deserves to be called epic. Fortunately it's not deadly serious. Plenty of comedic scenes and shout outs. It keeps events from getting too dark and helps the transition to phases where reality has to take a back seat to realism. Sometimes it takes further then Macross 7 ever did.
  20. I've got the same problem as Major Focker, a barebone version of the forum after login, but a complete version when not logged in.
  21. First episode impressions: Felt much like a 1970s mecha show, in a good way. Definitely aimed at a younger audience, so I'm not expecting an all to complicated plot. It's a bit less gritty then the 0079 and the mecha designs are fairly simple. The character designs work aren't really an issue, they blend in better then I expected. Flit and Emily have a strong Amuro and Fraw Bow vibe.
  22. I thought this was a thread on Basara's personality, not on judging Macross 7. Anyhow, I have a lot of sympathy for the character. A lovable grumpy, humourless jerk with a heart of gold in the mold of Indiana Jones. Also makes for a nice straight man in the more comedic parts of M7. Basara is in his twenties so we can skip all the coming-of-age and teen angst. Nice change of pace when compared to the usual male archetypes we see in modern anime.
  23. Crazy Aussies, always fun. Swedish-Italian delight
