    In my opinion the plot of Macross Frontier TV helps to confirm DYRL's relevance. 1) Richard Bilrer considers Minmay an important enough historical figure to go look for her. This also confirms 'in universe' that she matters and that she is missing (together with Megaroad 01). 2) Klan Klan during the attack on the Vaijra home planet in ep 24 refers to DYRL as "this song" (kono uta) to another Zentran pilot acting shocked implying it holds special significance to the Zentradi. Same with Grace commenting on the appropriateness of the song. Would be a bit odd if all were merely referring to only a movie. Canon in Macross is a dicey preposition at best. If we go with the flawed rendition theory of Kawamori you could argue: the attack on the Zentradi fortress in space war 1 took a while, there is no reason to assume Minmay performed only 1 or 2 songs. The movie and TV-series merely show us a different moments of the attack run.

    I've never seen the connection between Eva and Ideon except for dealing with a theme of destruction and rebirth. Afaik interviews I've read with Anno he cited Go Nagai's Devilman and Mazinger Z as his main inspiration.

    I've recently watched the second season of "Life on Mars" (UK version). Gene Hunt and this song just lodged themselves in to my memory.

    Are they? Let's take the usual anime guidelines on political conflict: UN ideology started off as a positive initiative to unify mankind, but got twisted along the way to benefit specific (old-national) interests (OTEC?). Anti-UN get's formed in response by the oppressed and political opponents of the initial idea. Good and bad guys serve as soldiers on both sides, both UN and Anti-UN commit unspeakable acts to win the war and the (political) leadership on both sides is morally corrupt...well, except for some cute princess. ( Misa? ). Both sides can be described as shades of grey, but since the anti-UN has to lose for narrative purposes, they get portrayed as the more brutal side.

    Don't get that either. I can't see the influence on Risa Ebata's designs. The AKB0048 characters like Ranka Lee. If only Satelight was able to pull off character animation on the level of K-on...

    Dunno, Mikimoto added some new fanservice scenes to Macross the First and those were pretty impressive, the new Minmay is hot. Also, if we only had a preference for classic chracters designs, that would assume the quality of fanservice completely depends on artwork and not writing. Are lame pantsu-jokes for example on the same level as scenes with functional nudity?

    Except for Taiwan and the Vatican only some disputed territories are not part of the UN. It's possible the anti-un is not made up by nations, but by disgruntled factions/corporations within countries. They also have access to technology derived from the ASS-1. Since it's an alternate history and Kawamori is a Gundam fan, my guess would be something like Anaheim selling arms to all factions.

    I've started on Hyouka, Kyoani's latest show. Visually impressive but slow to get going I'll see where it leads. E7 AO will be next, can't say I know anything about it, although no Dai Sato as a writer has me a little worried. I'm up to ep 15 on Mouretsu Pirates and rather enjoying it. The lack of conflict and it's positive outlook on the future fit with what I expect from a satelight show. The characters lack a bit in intensity but are all quite likeable. Good to see tastes differ . Space brothers is plain fun and something different. Nice to see a character with actual ambition again. Aiming to become an astronaut just appeals to me more than striving to finish high school.

    Yes, now that you mention it. For me the minor characters seem to be more like background static than usual. I don't know why that is.

    Even among that so called otaku pandering moe bait are some excellent shows: Bakemonogatari, Anohana, Haruhi, Aria etc. Too often those get equaled with low brow ecchi comedies.

    You're mixing up moe and cute. Cute is a description of character traits and has always been part of anime. Moe is a fairly recent description of a feeling of passion a character/object triggers with the observer. Most people on this forum are totally moe for the Macross valkyries and that doesn't mean they want to sleep with them...'cept a few diehard nuts and bolts guys Nostalgia on the part of the viewer. High school and high school aged characters represent a time between childhood and adolescence when life was still simple and easy. Idealized memories of a time of innocence that never was. Much like the way 80s and 90s anime is perceived in this thread...

    Heh, that is true. Gundam is known to hold a grudge. Poor Flay Allster hid in her room for 40 something episodes, after sleeping with Kira. Didn't save her either.

    Yea, but that's just a different generation in the same market. SDFM and M7 were essentially children's shows, aired on normal times and which also appealed to older viewers. Frontier is specifically created for the late night demographic which is comparable to the people that made up the OVA market of the 80s and 90s. I have to agree that Zero is a bit different: I think it's an early example of some very niche OVA of modern times, like Gundam Unicorn, VOTOM's Pailsen Files, etc. aimed at the original fans of long running franchises (and the SRW crowd). Those anime are far more restrained in the use of tropes and character types of what is popular now.

    Frontier is a late night anime and just like the Macross OVA's aimed at the otaku/collectors market, which is made up of older teens and adults.

    I've started on Medaka Box, which has a Haruhi-like vibe to it. Since It's a Gainax show I decided to finally see Top o Nerae 2 as well. I've had the DVD's lying around for years but to my shame never got round to them. Must admit Diebuster is very impressive. Gainax knows how to make a limited budget work and this anime packs some visual punch. Lots of proto moe, way ahead of it's time. Nono is adorable, a character like that could pop up in a modern show without falling out of tune. Some influence in there from Azumanga Daoh as well I think. Super robot extravaganza at it's finest.

    It's about portrayal. For example I don't have any problem with either violent or sexual content as such. However, that doesn't mean I enjoy splatter gore or frat-boy level jokes on sex. As Frontier is aimed at an older audience I would not have mind an explicit display of Alto and Sheryl sleeping together at all (not to mention it would have saved us from shippers going nuts about whether they did it or not) but spare me the Ranka breast jokes...

    I still find it strange to realize that the Viper like all Ferrari's are now essentially FIATs. Could end up seeing tech spill overs between the two in time.

    Dunno, what's in a name. For me nightcore just is a particular way of remixing songs, not a music genre. It's sounds also a bit different from the way I remember happy hardcore to be.     Nightcore are sped up remixes of songs with high BPM and high pitch voices. YV generally use an anime-picture as cover art. Sound is a bit similar to happy hardcore. An example:
