  1. By the way, since this is the news thread: I don't know why, but there is an increasing number of transgender fan art of Frontier in pixiv I don't know what caused this, suddenly it's all Man Sheryl FV
  2. You fell in my KEIKAKU DOORI! How strong does this REASON need to be? Have you ever thought about it? For example, we have a singer in a mecha anime. STRONG REASON for her presence: she is there to defeat enemies with her singing. WEAK REASON for her presence: she is there just because we like singers. How came you can accept a WEAK REASON for main characters being singers in Macross but demand that secondary characters need to have a STRONG REASON to be there? Like, them being the ultimate enemy or something like that, and not just Conspirator A, Conspirator B, Conspirator C and Conspirator D? Obviously we will get at least a second scene from them which will show how they are doing, and this is needed because they were made into characters, but their main reasons to be in the story are 1) to show the real status of Grace 2) to show a broader perspective of the impact of main characters' actions. This in a stylish "show, don't tell" way. This is not to say their role couldn't be expanded upon, but so far there is no reason to do so. Anime are different from comics. The first difference is that they don't go on and on. The second difference is that they still need to separate the story in self-contained units called "episodes". These episodes are to be seen one per week. Each episode usually needs to have its own story (unless it continues from the previous one), therefore there are always a lot of overall filler parts, because they serve just for a particular episode. If an episode in itself failed to build a good own climax usually it's called a bad episode (an episode not so entertaining). A bad episode may still have elements important to the overall story though, and may still be important to the overall pacing and emotional polarity, despite being a filler. Emotional polarity is a technical term from another author's guide to writing. You can't reduce writing just to making things flow from one point to another while avoiding fillers. You consider yourself a good writer, yet the first thing you suggest right of the bat is to jump the shark, and with a franchise that is already successful as it is, and as it is doing. FV
  3. I think Watanabe is good with older main characters, and probably this is also one of the reason Kawamori hired him. There was already the intention on Kawamori's side though to do something for an American audience. Also, he specifically said he liked to do something on the line of the novel "The Right Stuff". Again, what is due to who is debatable, but it's not like it slipped past Kawamori. With a mainstream series though you know you have to use protagonists not older than 17. This limits their possibilities. As for the Protoculture, I just said that Macross Plus was a story that just happened to become Macross, therefore it have less ties to its predecessor from the start. In Macross Plus we got the Macross consortium doing its shady dealings, but it never got a comeuppance of sort. It all comes to how dark you want your story to be. FV
  4. I don't think the co-director of Macross Plus was as influential as you think. Basically Kawamori was thinking about three other stories and he put them together with the brand name Macross to get them approved. For this reasons it's arguably the Macross "less Macross" out there. FV
  5. They may get to Grace, but it's as far as they get. They can't wage a war based on suppositions, and Galaxy consortium may officially deny any responsibilities for Grace's actions. It would be nice to see Macross Galaxy get some action at the end, but be aware that it can only done in a very rushed way. That's amateurish thought. And there is also amateurish comprehension of Macross Frontier. The world doesn't exist just for a few characters' sake. Excess of converging destinies may result in contrivance. You have to accept that some things are just there to create a universe bigger than its characters. Thus in Macross we got the Protoculture without having ever seen it. The Galaxy consortium seem to be an extension of corporations. As such something like that would have existed independently of the main characters. Ultimately it's a group born out of greed, doing things for greedy reasons. These reasons seem to contrast those of Bilrer. This is all we need to know. As for them being defeated, this is a comeuppance that may feel good to the audience, but ultimately is worthless. They are a headless organization, and they may not even be the only of its kind. They are bound to be a costant thorn in the flesh, but at least we can see their plans thwarted this time. You have called them "the real game", but have you noticed we don't even know their names? That's because it's not important who they are, what was to be known was that Grace is not just a subordinate spy, she works at the utmost levels. Basically they are an extension of Grace, they show how much Grace is influent. As for Bilrer, he explained to Alto the existence of the Fold Quartz. This is a way to indirectly tell the audience details about the story without resorting to a narrator. The Fold Quartz is a subplot centered around the peculiar importance of the Vajra in the universe of Macross. For audience's sake it is expressed as a conflict between Bilrer and Galaxy. This made things easier to understand: at the end of the anime the one of them who is rejoycing has won. As such though all it is needed is just their comment about the outcome. The fate of Bilrer is tied to the Vajra, because for his goal he needs Fold Quartzes, which are found only in the body of Vajra. If the Vajra will be huntable Bilrer will get his goal. If the Vajra will flee from this galaxy Bilrer won't get his goal. If the Vajra will become unhuntable because now friends of humans Bilrer won't get his goal. If the Vajra will become unhuntable but let everyone access their graveyard Bilrer will get his goal. It is as simple as that. What Galaxy actually wants is still to be known, so I can only speak for Bilrer. Macross Frontier is not the story of him becoming a quartz baron though. As for the Vajra, yeah they have no personality. What do you expect out of something that bears no resemblance to humans at all? Still, for villains personality is not a must. The villain can be even a force of nature. And here is where Kawamori waves his hand and says goodbye to you FV
  6. I think you've misunderstood Macross Frontier. Frankly, Bilrer's enterprise is not interesting as a story. We just need to know what he is able to do, and then in a later Macross we will see the results. We need a timeskip for this kind of things. It's not being sub-developed, it's being secondary to the story. What Bilrer and Grace are ultimately involved with is the destiny of the Vajra, and this is central to the plot, therefore it should be resolved in the last episode. Macross Frontier is centered around the war against the Vajra. The role of Bilrer is to have a paramilitary organization that allows Alto to keep his long hair. The role of Grace is to have a project that made Sheryl a famous singer. The role of Ai-kun is to have Ranka as the voice of the Vajra. Essentially, all factions are there to gather the main characters together, so that they can have their love triangle, songs and Valkyrie, which is what constitutes Macross. The love triangle here is the sandglass that tells how much time we have left, and it's almost over. Alto has already said why he likes the sky, Sheryl has learnt of her illness and Ranka is beginning to understand her tie with the Vajra. The characters have almost exhausted their possibilities as far as characterization goes. As I said, the only thing that could be expanded upon is a war with Macross Galaxy, but there is no direct relation with the main characters. They may never know it was all Galaxy's fault all along. There is no actual human vs cyborg conflict. Galaxy probably wants to promote implants everywhere, but it's never being mentioned any kind of racism or antipathy related to implants up to now, only the decision of a secret cabal to exploit the fact that Frontier lacked cyborgs. If it's only to show some differences between naturals and cyborgs, then Brera would suffice as example. FV
  7. I don't think they are AIs, they are probably just people that control the Galaxy Fleet. As such, they would exist reguardless of Ranka being the Little Queen. They didn't gather to scheme a way to realize a particular prophecy, they are there to catch opportunities as the world gave them. They are not even special, other Macross fleets may have something like them. I don't think there will be a S2. There are no real plot points they could expand upon, except a war against the Macross Galaxy, but this is not likely to happen because they kept themselves in the shadow. FV
  8. Leon will be probably killed by Grace. Grace will insert her hand in his chest, twist it at supersonic speed and shred him to pieces. FV
  9. -Triangler Last episode. -Brera the brother? When Ranka will totally regain her memory (probably next episode) or a sudden revelation before Brera dies to protect Ranka (last or next-to-last episode). There could a plot twist, though: . Either way, Brera either is or isn't Ranka's brother. It is not possible they spend an entire episode with him doing things to become Ranka's brother. As with many other items in this list, this will be resolved with just few words. -Sheryl's Infection Probably a critical moment in the climax of the last episode. -Leon's Coup Already succesful. What is undecided is the fate of Ozma and Cathy. -Vajra Origins The Vajra can only be either already pre-existing or artificially created, therefore you easily explain it with just a few words, probably from a flashback with Ranka eavesdropping Grace, Ranshe and Mao. -Mao/Grace/Ranshe's research Ranka's flashback mentioned above. The fate of the 117th research fleet could take an entire episode instead, but it will be reduced to a brief flashback, seen from the point of view of Ranka, therefore missing some pieces. We alredy know that the 117th research fleet was destroyed though, so we just need to know why the Vajra attacked it in the first place. This is likely to be related to Ranka, so again a flashback of her can explain it all. -Ranka's new Vajra Adventure There's no way this one won't be resolved. Ranka will come back so that the love triangle will be resolved. -Alto's family ties I don't wish to read spoilers, but this one seems to be resolved in one way or the other. -Macross Galaxy's role in this Will or won't be resolved, but Grace is deeply involved with this, so this will be probably explained in an exchange of words between Grace and Leon. It is become their common goal, after all. -collective galaxy conciousness voices/grace's cohorts Typically it's never explained where the villains come from. They were in a position to do these things and they did it. It's enough. People were fans of Star Wars long before they knew where Darth Vader came from, the same for The Lord of The Rings. -Bilrer's Dream and significance Last episode, after they decide what to do with the Vajra. -Something Luca/LAI-ish LAI is just a corporation that produce things, and they have already made enough gadgets. Luca's personal quest is to score with Nanase, and the last episode will or won't tell. Either way, Luca is a secondary character, and it doesn't matter the outcome FV
  10. More like: "Alto-kun, I'm not gonna sweet-talk you into a threesome with a Vajra anymore. You're not a bad person. You're a terrific person. You're my favorite person. But every once in a while, you can be a real c*nt. Farewell" FV
  11. Maybe she keeps it in its place with her prehensile hair Or maybe it's more like a hairpin than an actual bow FV
  12. I can check kanji with my dictionary program, but it was too blurry for me to properly recognize anything but the 回 FV
  13. I too had dial-up, I got ADSL only this year. Most of my friends instead had it, so I had to ask them to download it for me. It'w weird how I got to see Aquarion in bunches of two, three or more episodes and now I see Macross Frontier raw the day it comes out I too had the .rm files, but I didn't download them, I had a friend send them to me in 3 CDs. Now I just downloaded the remastered version of the first 20 episode, it's so different FV
  14. Kreshpy is going to post it here after having misposted it in the mecha/technology thread. However, I must say that the Japanese TV guide is listing only episodes that will be aired in september, so I say it's still undecided whether the 25 will be the last one. FV
  15. Two Macross Quarters, of course It would be called Macross 150% Frankly these are things that are usually told very late in the series nowadays. Sometimes they are not told at all, but I think this will not be the case for Frontier. Anyway, the Vajra are attracted by fold comunications and reaction engines. I guessed it's because they use fold comunications as well (I think they did capture Luca exactly because he used fold comunications with his ghosts). Also it was said that Grace used fold comunications to lure Vajra to Frontier (as per Operation Carnival). My guess is also that they see Ranka as one of their own kind, and they are trying to free her. Well, mainly it's personnel responsible for the mecha design: Kawamori, Miyatake and Itano Ichiro (as action choreographer). Also Masaharu Chiba, who created a technical dojinshi and later was assimilated in the staff or something. The old scriptwriters of Studio Nue all got their own career. FV
  16. It was not that. He guessed wrong (well, me too). He was like "I am gonna get this anime, I am gonna get it", and then it has been like "I don't get it anymore" since that FV
  17. When the WTF-1 became the SDF-04 something changed inside you FV
  18. Without subs I can't say I understood what was going on better than him FV
  19. The Japanese writing suggested the correct order in reading the pictures was right-to-left. Probably the pic is from 2ch. FV
