  1. Did gg sub episodes before 7 at all? Seems like they just joined the party. I've got all the Gattai and AiA I-Z releases so far, and kind of prefer Gattai if just for the video resolution and speed they get the subs out. Seems a bit more literal which I like. Subs are awful and video kind of studders in VLC (I'm on a Mac) but works perfect in QuickTime. I keep my PS3 stocked with the AiA releases tho... gotta see the episodes in 42" glory. Respect to all those doing subbing for us either way.
  2. I bought the 'McCross' dub partially for that reason. From Robotech.com even. They were the only ones that had it all in stock tho. Doesn't really feel worth ~$200 (and I feel kind of dirty giving HG money), but I think that's a big problem with anime releases nowadays, I could have gotten the complete "Dukes of Hazzard" series or something for that much. Then again it could be as bad as in Japan. I'm still eyeing up the 25th anniversary Macross 7 and Plus boxes at Amazon.co.jp... it'd *only* be $700 for both of them...
  3. You know... by RPG and anime convention, shouldn't the effeminate long haired pretty boy be a super villian? Hmmmm.....
  4. I noticed Amazon US is still taking orders on the memorial box version and oddly dropped the price from the $200.49 they were asking to $179.99. Of course, the question being... will I ever actually get it? Has anyone actually gotten this from Amazon?
  5. So... was that Sheryl and Ranka's 'song energy' that reached Alto in the mothership? Hmmmm.... Lots of Macross 7 references throughout, for sure. I really dug the Gattai translation notes they included with the sub, classy.
  6. I was kind of wondering if there was a legitimate thinpak of the dub... I had to break down and buy the entire set of the 'McCross' dub if just for the fact it's Iijima Mari. No real intention of ever watching it all the way through tho but who knows.
  7. Speaking of the Earth, are there any actual numbers anywhere of people who survived Space War 1? Population on the SDF-1 Macross was close to ~50k civilian, plus handfuls of survivors on Earth if you believe the TV version of events... There would have to have been at least a few million for repopulation to come as far as it has (not to mention filling out colonization ships with millions of people). Kind of splitting hairs, but I'm definitely curious.
  8. Very sad, but good to know for sure rather than wondering. Thanks.
  9. Honestly I don't really think the end of Macross 7 really needed much if any wrapping up; I even think they gave the 'triangle' a very solid (if subtle) ending. It just feels like they took a giant step backwards with Dynamite with regards to the ending of 7... and the OVA as a whole just feels really cheap in that the universe it takes place in doesn't really resemble the rest of Macross at all. Yeah, you still kind of had the power of music, and the Valkyrie, and while the idea of space whales and smuggler/poacher types with stolen UNS planes and a new friendly alien race are all cool concepts, the way it all comes together makes it all seem completely disjointed, IMO. I'm on the fence though regarding the scene at the hot spring... I've been to hot springs in the desert with hippies and their kids and beaches in Europe, so in context it doesn't seem like a big deal. The only context I can see for the Mylene yuri rape scene, however, is to show her as kind of helpless while Basara and Gamlin are gone, which... just doesn't seem in line.
  10. I just finally watched Macross Dynamite 7, and gotta say... I just don't get it. Don't get me wrong, I really loved Macross 7 as a whole. And to be fair, Dynamite had a few moments. Elma is really cute (albeit a little too Mylene-like), and there's actually some nice moments of synchronicity, with Basara and the band back at City 7, or where the radio show seems to reference the action on screen. Ok, the singing whale was kind of cool too. Otherwise it just seems like a case of Fire Bomber getting rewritten into another me-too anime script for the sake of marketing new albums. The race of people on Zola sort of looked Zentradi (but weren't, as far as I could tell), they had Valkyries but no real sign of UN Spacy, and don't seem to be in the Macross universe... anywhere else. Not to mention the Fire Bomber/Gamlin scenes not including Basara felt really tacked on, albeit kind of funny. The yuri/date rape scene was kind of bothersome, and I didn't really see the relevance of it, but the running scene afterwards was fun. Overall though it felt like it set the 7 story back instead of progressing it at all... with a really bland story and characters mixed in to boot. What were they thinking?! I just had to rant on this one I'm so disappointed... seems like Dynamite should go into the same hole as Macross II, but sadly I think it's canon.
  11. Wow, maybe those French classes I took weren't a complete waste. Someone at Satelight seems to know or really like French (Sara Nome singing in French/Frapanese in Zero, Sheryl Nome's scribblings on the mirror in Frontier) so in some strange way it may be legit...
  12. I snagged a Chinese sub (I think) in RMVB format since that was the only thing I could find initially... aside from Real quite possibly being the worst codec known to man the image was really, really dark and washed out. I need to learn to be more patient next time. That and/or work on my Japanese.
  13. Very true on the fansubs, regardless of the quality or which one comes out first I'm just happy there's people doing it at all. I just watched all 7 episodes so far (with limited understanding of 7 though) and really kind of started to appreciate the pacing of the series so far. I'm still kind of on the fence as far as the high school aspect though. This might've come up already as far as episode 7, but when Alto ditched his Valkyrie, he *did* grab Sheryl's earring, didn't he?
  14. I don't think Millia had pointy ears in DYRL. The Zentradi were very bald though, on the whole. And somewhat green... I'm still kind of on the fence as to whether I like DYRL or SDFM Exedol better. Anyway I can't tell if it's intended to be elf-ish or star trek...
  15. I've got my PS3 hard drive stocked, but I kind of wish AIA was slightly higher resolution. I kind of like Gattai better overall (including the more literal translations), but consoles can't play MKV containers sadly. If the overall series quality stays high I'm sure I'll get the Blu-rays off Amazon Japan or something. What resolution/sound quality are Shinsen files, btw? Gattai has been pretty good about getting the sub out the last few Sundays, I'm really hoping today is no exception.
  16. I was kind of underwhelmed by "Fleet of the strongest women" as far as the Encore episodes go... although I thought "Which one do you love?" was absolutely hysterical and put the whole Macross universe into perspective. I still haven't seen Dynamite, but I just recently got done watching 7 all the way through and absolutely loved it as a whole. On the subject of newbie questions when did the Zentradi start getting pointy ears? Seems like they get random abilities every so often (like Ranka's hair).
  17. If the 'movie in a movie' canon still stands, DYRL the movie came out (in the Macross universe) in 2031 as a retelling of the events of ~2012... so I guess it fits in both timeframes...
  18. Mac Zero - 2008 SDFM - 2009 - 2012 SDFM:DYRL - 2031 Mac+ - 2040 Mac7 - 2045-2046 Mac7 Dynamite - 2047 Frontier - 2059 - ????
  19. I've been going through a Macross marathon lately, and I tried to watch the Sentinels at some point just to see what the Macekered continuation of the whole Macross saga would be like... I just couldn't do it. I think I made it to the point where Minmay volunteers to help Lisa, then FF towards the end and gave up. I can't really even understand why there were petitions to keep it going. Which isn't to say I hate Robotech; I appreciate the fact HG brought it over and gave me a great story as a kid... I just wish they'd pull whatever is stuck up their arses out and let Macross be Macross in the US. Even as a kid I lost interest in Robotech after the Macross saga pretty quickly; more of the Mospeada/Southern Cross adaptations just doesn't do it for me. I have the old "complete collection" Robotech - Macross saga (unremastered), which I'm probably selling or giving away since I got 2 of the AnimeEigo (one sealed... for $40 why not), and the ADV dubbed set. Anyway to the TC, the entire AnimeEigo Macross release is only $60 at Robotech.com (was only $40 just a few weeks ago sadly), and you can even Netflix the ADV 06 dub with Mari Ijiima if you're not into subs. It's worth it to check out even if you are shopping for a Robotech collection.
  20. I'm really, really tempted to blow $575 or so for both of the Macross 7 remastered sets... although I've heard mixed reviews of the DYRL "HD" remaster. Anyone gotten any of these yet?
