Super Macross Mecha Fun Time Discussion Thread!
JB0 replied to Valkyrie Driver's topic in Movies and TV Series
That does explain nicely why they were wasting time on an uninhabitable ice planet. "Entropy control field" sounds like something that is useful as hell as well as, well, the kind of physics-breaking crap one would need to seal up something like the protodeviln. -

I suspect the first thing the protoculture remnant would tell them is "Look, when you find an inhospitable planet that seems like it couldn't be trying harder to keep you out if it was designed to, IT IS BECAUSE IT ACTUALLY WAS DESIGNED TO SO LEAVE IT ALONE! THE FOLD FAULTS AND TIME RIFTS ARE THERE FOR A GOOD REASON!" -

I think an armature would only make things worse, personally. It would not have changed the relationship between the trunk and the rest of the toys, and would've made actually maneuvering it into place more difficult. It would actually be exactly the kind of thing I was threatening to start removing the other day, destructively if necessary, as it only thinly disguises something being completely detached and reattached while making the actual process of doing so harder. Would it be better if the trunk was actually related to the rest of the parts around it in both modes? Absolutely, I am 100% for that, and think this was a bit of an engineering failure in that regard(though I recognize the toys are designed to strict material and labor budgets). But sticking it on a scorpion tail and shouting "pay no attention to the legos behind this curtain" doesn't improve life or aesthetics. If the budget for more plastic and hinge pins exists, I'd rather it go into making the trunk fold flat on the back(I say, as if I haven't put it on backwards and flipped it up so his head is hooded by the trunk like he's some sort of Runabout repaint). Tangentally, the trunk is actually a rather beefy piece of plastic. I'm surprised how much is in the block where the pegs all connect, and wonder if there wasn't a more complex plan originally. In less controversial takes, I wish they had printed his autobot logo on the car's roof instead of the hood. That way it would be on his chest in robot mode instead of folded away inside his body.- 17117 replies

So I found a Cliffjumper on the shelf and figured "Why not?" I wish he could tilt his head back. Big eff-off cannon with a bipod, he should be able to go prone with it. He snaps together impressively well in car mode. Possibly too well, I was uncomfortable with the force I had to put on some parts the first time. But most importantly... He can do this. The bipod makes it look like the cannon is firmly affixed in multiple places instead of loosely affixed one place, and while the back is not really built to BE a titan master seat, it seems to do the job better than most stuff that WAS meant for it. Ah, but modern valks have inertial dampers, so they can whip the head turret around all they want! The time has come for Mazinger-style head-cockpits to make a comeback! -

I... kinda want Thunderhowl just for the sword and lightning effect. Okay, I also think he's kinda neat-looking in spite of his flaws. Though his puppy mode seems like they were making an alligator and then changed their mind and threw a wolf head onto a gator.- 17117 replies

A fantastic actor all around. Most actors would be glad to have a quarter of his career.

The computer and electronics super geek thread
JB0 replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Raytracing will be universal going forward. AMD supports the DirectX 12 Ultimate raytracing implementation, which MS basically copied from the nVidia implementation. Everything SHOULD "just work" on either company's hardware right now, but I would not be surprised if some current games only enable the feature if they see an RTX card. AMD's announced solution for fancy upscaling is called "Super Resolution". It is essentially the same thing as DLSS(not precisely the same implementation, but it uses a similar process to accomplish the same end goal). And I still think that using a neural network to upscale an image is a stupid gimmick that only exists because nVidia had to justify including a huge block of hardware on the RTX2K chips that was useless for graphics rendering. -

Hopefully, they let Xilinx keep doing what they're doing instead of screwing it up like Intel did with Alterra. -

Isn't that just a paler version of the last Counter/Punch? Was hoping it would at least be a partial redesign, like maybe one with ankles. Color me disappointed.- 17117 replies

And I've refrained from grumbling about the robot mode*, because I DO see them putting a lot of effort into achieving a goal there and recognize it is the bot mode a lot of people want. It's not my Starscream, but it is definitely someone's Starscream. The jet is just sad though. It isn't toy-accurate, toon-accurate, or real world-accurate, and it seems to be purely due to lack of care. *Except for the double-canopy. I totally laughed at that. The backpack's completely unnecessary, but so much better than I expected that I'm actually giving TakaraTomy points for it.- 17117 replies

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
JB0 replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Minmay actually acts like a human being, though. Basara kinda... doesn't? She also wasn't treated as an unstoppable force of nature in either version of her story. She was hyped up after-the-fact. Basara's treated as something special from the word go. -
I just want to point out that, regardless of the actual nature of his resurrection, the idea that Data is dead-dead for reals flies in the face of the final scenes of Nemesis, which strongly imply Data's ALREADY starting to reawaken in B4's body(despite that not making sense because of how primitive B4 is). And I'm pretty sure he was the cast member chosen to die in Nemesis precisely BECAUSE it was easy to justify resurrecting him in the next movie. A movie which obviously didn't happen, because Nemesis was a dumpster fire and I'd be happy with future Trek just ignoring it entirely.

Basara is, in many ways, the shows biggest problem. He's unrelatable, steals the spotlight from people with interesting character arcs going on, and is generally more of a force of nature than an actual character. ... But he sings really good, so all is forgiven. BOMBA!!!! -

Man, I miss my Classics et al Jazz. He was on a coffee table for Reasons(tm), and a then-new large puppy decided Jazz looked highly mouthable. She cleaved him in twain, in what I assume was a desire to re-enact his big scene in Bayformers. Dog's lucky we'd already named her, or she'd be Megatron now. (She got Animated Blackarachnia at the same time. I had been unaware she was a chewer until that day.)- 17117 replies

I actually meant the armature hanging the null rays under the wings that lets them move to the arms without detaching. Though I think this toy would look better with a fake canopy hanging off the bottom than with the big plate laying on top of it. It is wildly obvious there's an entire robot torso down there, why hide just a tiny bit of it?- 17117 replies
