The computer and electronics super geek superthread...
CoryHolmes replied to EXO's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
So in a completely fortuitous turn of events, I got a message from my cell service provider that my contract was up and they're willing to give me $250 credit towards a hardware upgrade just for resigning my life away with them. I jumped at the chance. So now I'm on the hunt (be vewwy vewwy qwiet) for a new handset that will allow me to use Bluetooth Stero Headsets. I already know to look for phones that have A2DP Bluetooth2.0 profile, but what's this I keep reading about AVRCP Profile? Some of the sites I've read about say it'll let me " AVRCP allows you to start, stop, pause, change tracks and control volume levels directly from the stereo headphones if used with a compatible device". Isn't that part of the function of the device, what with the play/pause buttons on the headsets themselves? Please, MacrossWorlders! I beg of you to help drag this non-BT pleeb up the standards of modern technology! -
Ride Armors, Legioss and Treads! Oh my!

Robotech.com, but only the Blue Beta is for pre-order. The rest will follow in their own sweet time (ie: whenever). -
Bah, I wanted to leave Tali behind. Instead, I left that useless dupe Carth Onasi Kaiden behind.

Mmm... Ashley

This is such a guilty pleasure movie Though the truth be told, I'm not sure I could sit down and watch any bit of it without groaning in disgust. Except for the Glaive bits. Those are coolness personified.

Link?

I did 10 years of TKO (WTF), five years of Judo, four of Jui-Jutsu, quite a lot of gymnastics and major track & field while in highschool. Then I got waylaid by early-onset arthritis when I was 17 I can't even so much as jog any more or kneel for more than a few minutes before getting layed out with pain. Much suckage, I tell you.

Except for those elevators. They take the "killing" out of "killing aliens and saving the galaxy".

Why do you say this? -
We can hope, can't we? Will this do any good for those slow-assed elevators, though?

I like the Toynami 1/55th the best. Their toy looks tough and can take a pounding, while CMs artistic interpretation looks like someone took the Legioss and stuck it in a bench vise. Just doesn't do anything for me.

I know I'm going to lose some GeekCred for this, but it still works just fine. I fail to see any need to replace a perfectly working music phone. -

Actually I was hoping to avoid updating my phone at all, since it's only two years old and still works fine. I guess this means I'm back on the hunt for some basic frigging wired headsets. You think they'd be easier to find... -
Y'know, Red Dawn remade today could be incredibly subversive. Think about it, an army of foreigners invading for their own reasons, slaughtering all those whom oppose them and encouraging sympathizers. A brave group of ordinary citizens refuses to give up their homeland and "flawed" way of life and band together to form a resistance movement against the evil invaders. I'm a nominal supporter of the current War on Terror, but it always strikes me amused whenever I see something like this or a documentary on the Auxilary Units of WWII. How much a change in perspective does to the story

Aliens Vs. Predator 2 Script and Movie Review
CoryHolmes replied to bsu legato's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
... would any of you be surprised that I found it to be mindlessly entertaining? Was it as good as Aliens or Predator? Nope, no where close, but then again I wasn't expecting it to. Was it full of violence, gore, violence, swearing, violence, action, violence, nifty ending, violence, and have I mentioned a touch of violence? Oh, yeah I enjoyed the little shout-outs it made to previous films, such as the Alien hiding underneath a catwalk (much like Arnie did in Predator). Of course, it could also be that I have crappy taste when it comes to movies. Afterall, I enjoy Daredevil the movie -

Is there anyway to update the Bluetooth protocols on my cellphone? I have a music phone that I use nigh-continuously but I'm having a hard time finding stereo headphones. Everything is monophone or a single Bluetooth earpiece that leeches all the fun away from having a music phone (seriously, all I'm after are two earbuds and microphone. Think I can find one frigging cheapo set?). There are some new Bluetooth stereo headphones that really caught my eye but they require Bluetooth 2.0 and some specific profiles that my phone doesn't have. Here's what I'm after -
I have concerns about just how badly Abrams may butcher the franchise. If you have a movie set in the TOS era, then you need to be in the TOS era. That means wearing the spandex, micro-miniskirts, lots of buttons and rotating lights... from the rumours I've heard, it seems like things are being changed just for the sake of changing them or a producer's whim.

High Definition Media & Technology Thread
CoryHolmes replied to JsARCLIGHT's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
You brave, brave soul. I dunno what it's like in that T-Place you call home, but here in Vancouver we have Boxing Day sales. There are reasons why I try to avoid them, regardless of the deals being offered -
I, too, enjoyed the first DD movie. And on top of that, I prefer the theatrical cut to the director's cut! *dodges tomatos* And that was my first real exposure to Jennifer Garner

The only problem with heavier toys is that they remind me of the 80s die-cast toys, and I always expect them to be as sturdy as those old things...

Just put my pre-order in. I gotta say, $150 USD is a lot better than the $250 figure that was floating around.

Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone
CoryHolmes replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Oh, no doubts about that. It was gorgeous, very beautifully animated with great attention to detail. It's just... I'd seen those stories already, which took a lot of the pretty away. That would part of the "less" I referenced as a safeguard I enjoyed the animation, but I disliked how Ramiel kept changing shape. It looked damned spiffy, but I so despise it when characters/enemies so obviously pose and telegraph what they're going to do before they do it. One of the things I enjoyed about the TV series was how Ramiel didn't do that. When it wanted to shoot, a beam of energy just appeared and *bang* Enemy gone Very tight. So tight in fact it runs the risk of falling off it and ruining Eva forever! I mean, look at Transformers, Star Wars, Indiana Jones... all of them ruined forever, I say! I didn't evee realize what had happened there on my first three viewings of that episode. It wasn't until I got the first issue of the manga that I saw it, and then I had to go back and check and see that, yep, there was a hand behind him. That sort of subtlty is one of the things I love about the early half of the Eva series -

So I recently saw 1.0. I can now honestly say that I was quite underwhelmed and completely unsurprised. It seemed to be (more or less) a shot-for-shot remake of the original. Virtually nothing worthwhile seemed different at all, and the rushed pace did more harm than good in my opinion. Oh, well. At least 2.0 seems to be different. -
Hunh. This makes me wonder if Silicon Knights isn't totally off their rockers when they say UE3 has issues. And Bioware had orginally planned for Mass Effect to be a trilogy, complete and unto itself. It seems like EA wants to extend the IP beyond the third game and continue to milk that cash cow until it's bone dry (and, this being EA, to milk it some more after that).

Speak for yourself, they still need to do a lot of work on that engine. Texture-pop and the slooooowest elevators ever devised by mankind need to go.
