I think anybody who has read even half my posts will see how much I love M7, so in this thread I'd like to note - and I think I may be repeating myself - the most GLARING problem with M7: The very ending - when the Protodevilin have made peace with the people and decide to go frolicking off through the universe in search of something or other... Well... aren't they taking possessed bodies of people who they should - you know - free? And Basara doesn't seem bothered by this; nor does anyone else. Transvestite Protodevilin Dude/Chick should give back the body of Advisor Cantrememberhisjapanesename - and shouldn't somebody be asking for the body back? Maybe someone explained it to me already - but I forgot the reason why this wasn't a problem? VFTF1

I have not heard this theary; and I just assumed the "official" "ridiculous" M7 "rumor" that Basara is the son of Minmey and Hikaru was true... But come to think of it, I guess he could be the son of Shin and Sara - especially given how Basara wants to move a mountain... if Sara could move rocks; then he figures he could move mountains - that's a very nice analogy... But the problem with this is that Sara would have given birth to Basara somewhere in ...err...alien deep space? Anyway - I'd be interested in hearing the theory. Lay it out please VFTF1

Macross Frontier Episode 2 Talkback Thread *READ 1st Post*
VFTF1 replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
Grumble Grumble! I sure as heyback hope the torrent is done downloading tonight! My laptop torrents really slowly because I'm on a mobile internet connection. Don't want to download it on my regular PC because it's more of a "family" computer and I don't keep my personal stuff on it... grumble - but at least I'll be watchin Episode 02 MF with my new 1/5000 SDF1 Macross as a viewing companion VFTF1 -
First impression: very good! Although it's primarily made of plastic; the plastic is solid - not brittle. I don't get a heart attack just touching it as I sometimes do with Yamato - but this could be due to the fact that the Macross at this scale is a lot less detail heavy in terms of molded parts... I like the fact that the Daedelus and Prometheus are disengagable - very good that! Haven't transformed it yet; but just admiring the detailing and paint job - very good stuff. VFTF1

Sergorn rules! I agree - especially with the last sentence: Basara's music - and the power of Music in General really do have an effect and raise Spiritia levels when they're down! As for Max - well Ork - I grant you that as with anything in fiction, it's all a matter of interpretation. I personally think that just as Max was a better pilot than Hikaru, so too Max had a far easier time of it with Milia. First of all; he had one girl he was in love with (Hikaru has trouble with getting his feelings sorted out), second of all, he beat her in mecha combat thereby establishing dominance over her (in her eyes, in accordance with her hierarchy of values), then he beat her in the arcade, and finally in the knife fight - and instead of killing her he kissed her and married her pretty much the next day. I just don't see where you can honestly find "problems with Milia" in this account. If you mean that he had trouble getting a decent cup of coffee; well - I think that later, in Romanesque, when Milia tosses her baby and Max is cool as can be about it, we see that Max has learned much about his Zendradi wife and adapted very well to her particular traits. Meanwhile, in that very same episode, Hikaru STILL can't figure out whether he loves Misa or not... so... As for Max being a side character - well - I guess I can concede the point - that maybe if Max was the focus of the show, then more of his imperfections and development as a character would come out - ok - yeah - I can agree - but in Macross 7 Max is also present (and in Macross 7, I'll grant you he has real trouble with Milia) and in Macross 7 IMO he does get development because he's in a situation where he can't be perfect Max. As Captain, he makes decisions which are no-win decisions. People (his people) always get killed, and for most of the series he's on defence. Basara - in this respect - I guess does get off the hook. Basara is not responsible for day-to-day decisions; he is not responsible for decisions that will impact whether people die or live. He acts as though he is above politics; non-political - he acts like a demigod. I grant you this - and maybe that is what is grating about Basara, because everyone in their own way is trying to do something to help; the military included. And for instance the military never says "we're in a war with aliens! Draft all the civilians and cease all civilian life and transfer all resources towards war!" The same goes for other people/branches. No one believes they have a monopoly on truth. Basara, however, seems to believe the his music is the truth; that it is the only thing that will stop the fighting. His is an all-or-nothing mentality; a totalitarian mentality - I'll grant you. And so naturally he puts people off; because - well - what if he's wrong? But sometimes totalitarian arguments are worth examining - and worth presenting in totalitarian form - that is in the extreme. If living, thinking beings are truly capable of love and happiness and love and happiness is a better and more fitting state than hatred - then why not move them towards love and happiness? And can hatred more them to hatred? Can bombs make them put down their bombs and live normal happy lives? Or maybe we need the power of music and the feelings of love and friendship to shine strongly at them? Maybe only music and love can fight hatred and bombs? Basara believes in this so deeply; it's like a religion. Religious figures - at least the ones who really believe what they preach - are always extremists. This is because religion is ultimately about belief - there is only so far that reason can go - which is why "reasonable people" are usually not extremists because reason tells them that there are limits to how much of truth can be grasped. But belief is something in your heart - and either you believe in Basara and think he's da best or you think he's annoying, wacko and generally a fruitloop. So I'm not surprised by the anitpathy towards Basara. VFTF1

Aw shucks Thanks... On a related note - though I don't want to be accused of going too far off topic - so if it turns out that people have like a million things to say about this then maybe there should be a new thread but - My theory (amateur non-reasearched hunch theory!) about why these Japanese anime shows are so violent and show death etc is as follows: It would seem ridiculous for a country that went through two atomic bomb attacks to not show more violence/death in childrens cartoons. Ridiculous in the sense that it would - in my view- probably even be insulting to people if they had to watch a show about robots and various armies shooting it out but the show looked like GI Joe... I just get the feeling that the Japanese are more realistic about this because they have no intention of "hiding" the horrors of warfare from even children - in fact, they likely want to preserve the memory of those horrors as a way of avoiding them in future. Just a hunch - and I don't want to offend anyone (if I did sorry) - and I am by no means in any way shape or form educated about Japanese culture, society, history and stuff. My theory/hunch is meant more as a question backed up by some preliminary thoughts - and it is sparked by watching Zambot 3 episode 1 VFTF1

That's a great line! So this guy did Turn-A-Gundam? I only watched one episode of Turn-A-Gundam (8 with the cows ) ... but I really liked it. I particularly liked the idea of technological and aesthetic regress - rather than say, post-apocaliptic stuff wher you have a kind of post-technological post-industrial earth where elements from the previous technological age mesh with primitive weapons. The twist with simple regress to former style and times is really interesting and fun. But in general I will soon download all of Zambot 3. And I like how pro-family it is; very family oriented. How the whole family works together to get the Super Robot working - what with the mother stripping her son, Grandma fetching his helment, and Grandad kind of pimping the whole organization. Really nifty VFTF1

Macross Frontier Episode 2 Talkback Thread *READ 1st Post*
VFTF1 replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
Well - gave up on downloading the RAW and am now downloading the Gai one - with the subs - so hopefully tonight I'll watch it It's really cool to be alive during my first Macross series - in the sense that this is the first time I've watched a modern rendition of Macross starting with episode 1 and not knowing where it will go VFTF1 -
Hmm... the differences - particularly in fighter mode - are minute. But the fact that it's in scale with everything else is a big factor in favor... and those hands - wow - they look Revoltech great! Probably I'll end up unable to resist these - but maybe I'll wait and instead of Roy and Hiky (since I have 1/48 S and Hik J), I'll get Max and Milia in this scale. VFTF1

That price does not inspire confidence. Might as well stick to the 1/48 with prices like those VFTF1 -
Eeeghads! I just watched 3/4 of episode one and I'm in shock ! This is great stuff! But can they actually DDOOOOOooo that in cartoons?! It's so sad to compare this to the lame stuff we have now ... What an utterly violent cartoon! Those cops were brutaly slaughtered! The people on that ship blown to pieces! That 10 year old boy stripped by his mother and that Killer the Bucher! jeez! "Oh lots of creatures for me to kill here!" Amazing - naturally the one thing that is annoying is that all of the characters; the young ones at least; don't seem to have to go through any traumatic adjustment period when flying snails, robotic squids and Mecha show up! Overall I must download all of this and watch it. As to the "kill 'em all" thing - it is blatantly obvious that lots of people will die in this cartoon from the get go VFTF1

Well I'm downloading - although I fear I am donwloading raw... I take it no subed version has been made yet? I feel kind of stupid for downloading raw. I know no Japanse.. maybe I should start learning. Good a time as any VFTF1 -
I think another major problem with this - and now don't get mad at me or say I'm "America bashing" because that would be the equivalent of bashing myself... ... is that generally it seems that in the USA dubbing is prefered to sub-titles and generally things are cut to conform with certain cultural parameteres - and both of these factors would most certainly make the US-release of MF (under whatever heading) worse than the Japanese. I prefer such experiments not to be done. Let it be in Japanese. Let it be original. Let it be different. Let it be sub-titled. just my opinion. VFTF1

That Valk is totally drunk - you can tell by the fact that his leg is bent every which way- he doesn't know what joints to use; Battroid or Gaurdian! that's funny But why did you forget to transform his "ribs?" on the sides? Poor Jetfire So left out VFTF1 (who liked the easter bunny too!)

This, I think, is debatable - and I am, in any event, rather skeptical... Skeptical of the notion that if a big corporation with big resources invests the money in promoting Macross then the franchise will benefit. I agree that certainly visibility will increase, but will the franchise really benefit - that I am skeptical about. Here is why: For a very long time I was a loyal Transformers fan; and in the dark days when there were no Transformers in the US, there was no comic book, and the toys were few, far between or even non-existant, the fanbase on the internet did a superb job - all things considered - keeping the franchise alive. Fanfiction flourished, conventions flourished, fan comic books flourished. And Transformers never had it better in terms of the quality of the stories, the care shown for the older toys, and the general culture surrounding the franchise. When Hasbro finally got on the ball and started investing heavily in marketing Transformers again; please note what happened. Yes, naturally there were huge positives - new toys, reissues of Generation 1 (by Takara as well), new story lines, Beast Wars (truly outstanding)... But at some point it appears that the corporate powers made the decision that to keep Transformers viable, the franchise must constantly reinvent itself, shed any pretense to continuity, and change its' form and style to fit with passing fads and market demand. I am not attacking Hasbro in writing this - I prefer that Transformers exists; that we are able to get reissues and the occasional really cool new toy to the days when it didn't. But I am not convinced that the franchise as such hasn't suffered. In fact, as a Transformers fan, I have to strangely cut myself off from what is happening in Transformers nowadays. The Armada-Energon-Cybertron shows were terrible; horrible. The characters have been totally recycled a thousand times and each time they loose a little more of themselves... I just don't feel comfortable with this situation. The Dreamwave comics were horrible... I guess what I'm getting at is that massive corporate engagement in the promotion of a franchise isn't necessarily beneficial for it. I have a terrible feeling that Transformers will suffer from the excessive amount of creative energy emerging from corporate focus groups rather than from fan driven projects - although - I'm not trying to be extreme or alarmist here; I know that the fandom still has a lot of creative endeavors ongoing... I'm really not trying to bash Hasbro - that's not how I want these remarks to be interpretted. I guess I'm just saying that for Macross - it doesn't necessarily hurt to be low key, quite, a niche in the market - if Macross were to really try to expand and burst into the mainstream as Transformers did - I am sure that we would all be a bit saddened because...well... it wouldn't be the Macross we know and love... And it's hard to make such compromises... sometimes I think it's better to be content with being a niche in the market and reveling in the quality of something than wishing that EEEVVERRYONE loved what you love - even if that means diluting the very thing you love to suit everyones' tastes. VFTF1

The only Revoltechs I don't find appealing are the Transformers ones. The only reason is that they are modelled on Pat Lee's terrible (IMO) Dreamwave artwork I prefered the models of Takara's MEGA PVC line - modelled after the cartoons. VFTF1

I completely misunderstood the question and voted poo. I thought you meant as in just promoting Macross as such - which I figured was kind of redundant since it already does that over the internet... didn't know you meant promoting macross specifically aimed at the US market as a way around Horrible Goblins. Hmm... I avoid movies with bad actors unless they're so bad that they're good. VFTF1
