Macross Frontier Mecha/Technology Thread *Read 1st post*
sketchley replied to azrael's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Just for the record - I was posting only to clarify the quote from a published book. If the continuity says that the VF-1 evolved from the VF-0 which evolved from the F-203, then I'm cool with that. The point of the article is merely where the design inspiration for various VFs came from. In addition, at the tail end of the article, is a list of name sources for VFs, and they are, in no particular order: F-4U Cutlass F-8 Crusader P-38 Lightning XB-7 Valkyrie (posting as it appears in print in the magazine. Isn't it the XB-70?) Me262 Sturmvogel P-47 Thunderbolt A-10 Thunderbolt De Havilland Vampire (the current wikipedia article has the exact same picture as the mag! What are the odds...) -

I don't have an agenda other than reporting accurately. I merely pointed out what the magazine article states. You're changing that report to your own opinion is what has angered me. Therefore, you shove it up your shorts. Opinionate all you want. DO NOT change facts and misquote other people's posts. -

Look, short of posting the actual script line, in Japanese, I have nothing more to say on this. In addition, you are being rude to the other members of MW by not making your arguement in English; at the very least you are inhibiting their effective participation and ability to learn from the debate. Lastly, what I have learned from my teachers in Japanese class in high school, and two universities (one of them in Japan), is that Japanese words are inherently uncountable and need a counter to convey if there is only one, or more than one of a particular item Ie: 車一台、鉛筆一本. (and I do agree that often times, the quantity can be determined by the context. Thus the request for the script, because from the information given so far in this debate herein, it is vague.) -
Easy - Macross F is billed as a school story. You can't have high school without a youthful cast. In SDF:M, I believe the explantion is that the majority of the older, more experience pilots had been killed during the UN Wars. Though, you could also add the dimension that the "old dogs" couldn't learn the "new tricks" needed to successfully pilot a transforming fighter plane. Though, we must not forget that in the real world, the average fighter pilot is "young".

Keep in mind that the interior of the Macross Frontier has a lower gravity than our own Earth. I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think it was 0.6 or 0.7 g. You'll have to check the first episode, as the actual level can be seen when Sheryl is disembarking from the transport that brought her to the ship. EDIT: it appears that Master Dex beat me to it. -

Great Mechanics.DX 4 Funny how the magazine was published on 2008.04.15 and includes the VF-171, the VF-25, and scenes from the first episode of Macross Frontier. -

That begs the question... what if the Dragon II was supposed to be the F-15? I mean, alot of the manufactor names used in Macross Fiction are derieved from real world companies, but not exactly so (to avoid legal issues?)... When quoting someone, do NOT change the quotes. As per the article: F-14 - VF-1 This is NOT opinion. It is fact. Changing the F-14 to the F203 Dragon II is your own opinion, and it is the height of rudeness to attribute your opinion to someone else. -

Chikyugo could also be translated as Earth languages. (All Japanese words being uncountable and in need of a counter to determine the actual quantity.) As for which language is used - it could be all and in the amounts that we've seen: Japanese (main), Zentraedi, English and French. The answer to why Sheryl didn't text the message is pretty simple: she didn't want to alert her manager exactly when she left, thus giving her a head start. -

Great Mechanics.DX 4 Pg 092 (VF Image Source) F-14 - VF-1 SR-71 - VF-4 YF-23 - YF-21 X-29 - YF-19 F-117 - VF-17 Su-27 - SV-51 F-16XL - VF-0D In addition, the article states the following: Translated roughly as "After the YF-19 was designed, the real (life) Sukhoi Su-47 appeared; which is quite surprising." -
Spielberg does good stuff. But, I don't think the mood of Ghost in the Shell fits with the humanism that his movies are generally themed with. GitS is about humans who have given up their humanity, after all. I'm not going to hold my breath on this one, as the majority of Hollywood adaptations of late (not necessarily of anime) have been disappointing.

Fun facts: Large areas of the Pacific speak French. It's highly likely that Mayan Island is in one of those French speaking parts. One of the artists involved in Macross F is French. -
I think the Varuta (on some of their larger capital ships) had the omni-directional barrier as well - though as a good chunk of their technology stems from the human fleet they took over...

Talk about loaded question (first post). My advice: step out of your own small culture shoes and examine a culture from the inside, with things taken in context. In addition, keep in mind that anime is far from main stream in Japan. It's not like the whole society embraces what goes on in anime.

Who knows. I got the impression that the anime was deliberately avoiding mentioning a pet-name for the VF-25. Though, given how far ahead the production most likely is (or should be), the picked name most likely won't appear until the latter half of the series.

That's new to this thread. I agree. I was reminded of the T-Crush... I'm not sure how related, if at all, the two are. The impression that I got from the 25th anniversary special was that the X-Gear developed out of the real world development of power assist suits. If there is a link between the two, it wasn't mentioned. Perhaps we'll learn more about the history of the X-Gear when a Macross F book gets published... (if must be stressed... Macross 0 having lacked it's own dedicated book.) -

Funny how the more recent Macross productions (and not necessarily the more in-universe technological advanced) have greater volumes of missiles fired, but with reduced effectiveness. It's starting to come across like missiles being used primarily as a destraction while another weapon (the gun pod) is used to do the actual attack. Even then, especially with the gun pod, only a small number of the bullets fired actually hit... -

From the materials that I glanced at... all characters, little to no mecha action. -
I don't think there's anything wrong with the use of PPBs. Force fields are gimmick with how much grounding in reality? In some ways, PPBs are just a limited variation of that gimmick (you know - the hero invincibility field. "Hey tawny. Stand behind me. I'll protect you, as I can't die!)

Super Dimension Space communications... (funny how that other dimension, visited frequently whenever people in the universe fold, gets forgotten. ) Check out Sheryl's mobile phone as well - in addition to being soft and squishy (like a pet or teddy bear), they've also got some funky holographic projection abilities! -
Post in this thread if you think the VF-25 transforms too fast
sketchley replied to omg's topic in Movies and TV Series
Check out these transformation times for the VF-1: Min time from Fighter to GERWALK: automated, Approx 1.5s Min time from GERWALK to Battroid: automated, under 2s Standard time from Fighter to Battroid: automated, under 5s Min time from Fighter to Battroid: manual, 0.9 s (these are canon from a few years ago, BTW). If the original transforms that fast, it's not really a stretch of the imagination if the VF-25 has shaved another few parts of a second off. Though, it does leave me scratching my head how manual is faster than automatic... one would think that it'd be the opposite. -
Just one: Skanda I was tempted to submit Agni, but it tends to get butchered more when changed into Japanese phonetics and there's already been a "Fire Valkyrie" . In addition, Skanda has a lot more symbolism and association with Vajra than Agni does. Though, I'm sure Kawamori Shouji could appreciate the origins of both terms.

I just went back and rewatched and rewatched that segment of the opening credits. I was going to say this thing and that thing and reference jaw lines - but the eye colour seals things. Ranka - reddish eyes Sheryl - blue eyes Alto - brown eyes Maiko - brown eyes. -

I DLed the [Q-R] Macross Frontier releases, and had trouble playing the mp4 as well. I attempted to get it to run in WinAmp, and even with DLing some changed codecs and other prefrences changes, I could only get the audio to work at best. I searched and found info leading to my installing the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. In the process, it removed some things (possibly the Haali Media Splitter) and replaced them with more functional alternatives. The mp4 file worked, and the media player that comes with the codec pack is pretty funky (though, I'd already DLed it on another occasion.) The playback is really great, and even at 100% scaling, the image takes up almost all of my screen (letterbox style - I'm running on a Qosmio laptop - don't ask about how it handles heat disappation... >.< ) -

Up until now, I've been thinking that it was Sheryl dressed as a maiko.
