  1. i like being japanese, but once in a while someone will do something like this which makes me completely embarassed of being japanese (like now, or the time when someone asked me what "hentai" was) i couldn't agree more. sure it takes incredible technology to build a robot that looks that much like a human being, but why would you want to? 5 year-old girl, school teacher, what's next? nurse? kogal?
  2. it's tako hai. or "octopus shochu cocktail"
  3. What is this hope you speak of? And where can I get some?
  4. gets you all worked up, huh. well join the club. i'm all worked up too. and at a forum for ANIME. where stuff is to be kept LIGHT HEARTED AND FUN. i'm not even arguing with you man, i agree with most of your stuff. i don't agree with you posting that stuff on this thread. why, because we're NOT SUPPOSED TO GET WORKED UP at a forum like this. why do you think the admins put a 'nothing political please' note in the title of this forum, for decoration? i could discuss with you more in detail on these subjects if you like, in private, however. if u want, PM me or email me. or i could send you ANOTHER lengthy PM, if you want. i promise i will keep the discussion intelligible and not emotional. do i know the horrors that the japanese did during the pacific war? heck yeah, i do. do i feel guilty about it? you bet your ass i do. do i want to be reminded about it when i go to an anime forum seeking fun? you know where this is going. admins, this thread needs to get locked NOW. edit: oh yeah, and do i have family and loved ones who suffered because of the war on both sides of the war? yes i do.
  5. by the way, getting back on topic, from what i gather from the trailer (i do understand japanese) and just from guessing, i do believe that she is the secret weapon. according to the dialogue, the secret weapon is a kind of sensing device. if you equate sonar to the ears of a sub, the secret weapon is the "eyes of a sub." then, you see the girl wearing headphones and look like she's trying to image something in her head. i guess, the logic is, by using this new detection device they can attack the US fleet before being attacked and thus stop the ship carrying the third warhead. just sounds like cheesy entertainment to me. nothing to be taken seriously like war movies in the states. however, it still somehow manages to surface all this political stuff in the thread. jeez
  6. ok all. i really don not want to be talking about a political topic on a forum for macross, but you are really leaving me no choice. like you said, 9/11, 3000 dead. no provocation. i'm an american too, i was in tears that day. yes, japan DID start and provoke the war, as well as committ horrendous war crimes on a similar scale as germany (most civilians didn't know at the time, at least). however, 300,000 combined died from the two nucs, most of them were slow, agonizing deaths. most large cities were fire bombed. in tokyo alone, over 1 mil died over the course of the war. the leaders that started the war took control by force, they weren't elected by the people. i'm not saying that the japanese people aren't guilty. they are. they did back the war effort. do they have too much of a victim mentality when they committed a lot of crimes as well? yes they do. should this be discussed here? no, i don't think so.
  7. stopped by the local hobby store. it's an awesome store, but the emphasis is on RC cars/planes. couldn't find anything. i just moved to a new area so i don't know any better places.
  8. damn. just read the product description at twin moons. those things look niiiiice.
  9. i'd also like to know if there's anything similar available that's not online. like at a hobby store, interior decorating store or at a hardware store or something. or maybe even parts to make my own.
  10. In the models thread, I see lots of Hasegawas with nice looking stands. I wouldn't mind having some for my yammies. Where can I find some, or the materials to make one of my own? I want something simple, not like the Yamato launch arm. I would've posted this in the where to buy section but I thought it was relevant here too. Move it, if you must.
  11. Yes, but we miss out on the *why* they're like they are at the start of DYRL. We lose out on what decisions they'd made in their lives up to that point. Because of that lack of background information, it makes those transformations just that much less impressive and amazing. Instead of history of missed chances and poor choices that lead to Misa and Hikaru's relationship, we get your standard Hollyweird tale of the male and female lead falling in love by the end of the movie. SDF Macross was much more believable in its depiction of that evolution from, "I hate your guts" to emphatic declarations of love. DYRL just glossed over that whole interaction and went for the glitzy Hollyweirdisms that I so detest. It doesn't even come close to adequetly explaining the scope of their relationship, of the hows and whys they're fit for each other. Roy was turned from a hardned pilot who drank to overcome his problems into a drunkard who was mainly used for comic relief. We got absolutly no information regarding Claudia's relationship with Misa, about their friendship and how close the two of them were. hey all. i usually come here just for news and don't post too frequently, but i've been around since the old boards. i'm a former film student working in the entertainment industry and just wanted to add my 2cents. cory, i must disagree with your opinion. it is true that any movie version will have less character development than a series, but i feel dyrl did much better in explaining "why" characters act certain ways than most movies based on tv series' (come on! they only have 2 hours to work with!) minmay is a much more mature character than in the TV series, who's feelings for hikaru seem much more legit. she shared an intimate moment with hikaru, and her superstar status isolated her from having friends, making him the only person she could talk to. that's enough of a reason for her to like hikaru. of course, in the TV series you get to watch her change from being an immature ditz into someone who has genuine feelings for hikaru (because there's more TIME). the romance that develops out of hikaru and misa's isolation on earth makes perfect sense. romance always tends to develop where it wasn't when there's a situation of extreme stress. in times of peril, people tend to act in ways they wouldn't otherwise. that is the premise for all the romances that develop in wartime movies like Dr. Zhivago, etc. misa was feeling seriously vulnerable! earth and all her loved ones were gone! hikaru was there for her just at the right time! why shouldn't she fall for him? the only thing that i felt wasn't developed enough in dyrl was hikaru's character. the only explanation we get for him dropping minmay in favor of misa is "you're the one i wanna be with, not her" in the TV series, minmay is immature and unsure of her feelings giving hikaru ample reasons (and TIME) to fall for a more genuinely caring woman. they did the best that they could have of shrinking 36 episodes into 2 hours. dyrl fared a lot better in my opinion than most series to movie conversions. as far as the pace of the movie, it is true that there's a whole section of the film with little fighting and more focus on hikaru and misa. i understand that some people want a little more pace and action. i personally thought there was enough action, but i understand that is a matter of taste that can't be argued for or against. however, as stated by someone else, macross (TV and dyrl) was meant to be a love story with the backdrop of interstellar war. the creators are quoted as specifically stating that.
  12. yeah, well the only reason why I mentioned those two ideas was because the article claimed they were actual feasible proposals to the interim bomber program. Regardless, I think they're both bad ideas.
  13. Hmmmm... Just read this article. If the proposed FB-22 does not even meet the range requirement of a regional bomber, then I doubt that an "FB-23" would either. Northrop/Grumman's proposed block upgrade for existing B2's sounds like the best idea to me. If the Airforce is using a lot of cash to maintain the existing bomber fleet for "decades to come", I'm sure they can wait until an all new bomber program is conceived and developed. How about forgetting the whole "interim" bomber program and moving up the process of building a next gen bomber by 5 or 10 years (instead of sometime in the 2030s)? Although I like how the FB-22 looks and both an FB-22 and an FB-23 would rate high in my personal coolness factor. Side note: I don't like the idea of using orbital and suborbital bombing weapons or using ICBMs with conventional warheads to bomb targets. The former, because I heard somewhere that there was an agreement NOT to use space for war (I guess ICBMs are designed to fly at that altitude anyway) and the latter because it just somehow emotionally disturbs me.
  14. As I said in my earlier post, the Japanese are not willing to have a true military (although the JASDF seems close enough) and some key Asian neighbors would be at an uproar if Japan attempted to get any more of a military than they already have. It makes sense to me: unfortunately, some grudges die hard. Back to topic: I also think that thrust vectoring is definitely not worth sacrificing (and the only feature that I like better on the 22 than the 23), but I do think it makes sense if the 23 is resurrected for some bombing role as rumored (most SAMs are heat seeking, aren't they?). The requirement for manuverability would decrease and from what I've read it is supposed to decrease the heat signature significantly by mixing the hot air from the exhaust with outside air. Also, because the openings are completely on the top side of the plane, heat seeking missles coming from the ground would have a harder time tracing it. Still not convinced that the 22 would be cheaper, but we've been over that argument several times over so I don't think going over it again would help.
  15. Actually I think its a fine thing to do. with regional tensions the way they are MORE offensive weapons is not a good thing. What would the Japanese use a carrier for when the have article 19? And your point about germany is a lot different. The german government has forces for self defence and a constitutional clause preventing out of country depoyments (but due to a 1994 constitutional court ruling the Federal republic has been ammended saying deployments as part of a multinational coalition is ok). GSG 9 is a self defence measure. Also germany has the EU to use as a framework for action and a moral check on its behavoir... Japan has no close allies. Germany for the longest time supported "civillian power"" models of foreign affaris, which eschewed miliatary force ans stressed the application of diplomacy and economic trade to act internationally. It still believes in those tenets deeply. So things haven't changed that much. Agreed. Germany is surrounded by NATO allies. The situation is a little different for Japan because it has two Communist coutries right in its neighborhood who fear and loath it and who have been conquered by it in the past. When the Japanese National soccer team played some games in the Nanking province of China this summer it started a total anti-Japanese riot. Some (and I do stress SOME, not all) South Korean citizens also mistrust Japan and their SDF (especially after it deployed to Iraq) EVEN MORE than they do the North Koreans. Most of Asia does not trust Japan with a military, and most citizens of Japan do not want a military because after the nucs, they are pretty much sick of war. VF19, this is not about whether Japan and the US still have a grudge with each other. In fact, Japan relies on the US for its survival, as stated by others. However, there are some political analysts that do lament at the fact that because of this, some Japanese politicians feel they have to listen to the US' every whim. Well, sorry to clog the thread with more political mumbo jumbo. Here's something more on topic- The YF-23 did not have thrust vectoring nozzles because it's engines were recessed far into the fuselage (similar to B-2) to protect it from heat seeking missles. This design feature made it impossible to add vector nozzles. My question is, how effective is this design feature in protecting the plane from heat seeking weapons, and is it worth sacrificing thrust vectoring to have this design?
  16. at least you guys have dollar theaters. watching a movie in california is veeeery 'spensive. regardless, i'm sure glad i waited for the theater release!
  17. Whoa! I did not even realize the TV pilots were made of a different material until I checked just now!!
  18. i just received a 3rd issue thanks to Neova. Unfortunately, it came with a defect. One of the panels on the right wing was loose and completely unattached to the wing itself. The pic below is literally how it looked with the box still sealed. Of course, Neova is not to blame. I was pretty satisfied with his packing job and the thing shipped really fast (thanks Neova!). Not quite as satisfied with Yamato's QC, though. I've had tab B's break on me and 1/48s with arthritic hips but to be honest, I have been pretty satisfied with Yamato's QC until now. What kinda irked me about this one was that it came like this straight outta the box. Oh well, nothing a little model cement or super glue can't fix.
  19. Yeah, and I agree with you that every new plane should have a new scheme. YET, for some reason, they didn't give the super h. a new scheme even though they did with every other new plane. What I'm saying is, maybe they didn't give this new plane a new scheme because they're not too excited about getting THIS new plane. They might be having Tomcat withdrawls er somethin (I AM ). As stated by others, I also think that the stripe looks ugly with the LERX getting in the way and should be placed somewhere else.
  20. Huh, that's odd. Not trying to start another debate, but maybe it's because they aren't as prepared emotionally to part with the old plane as they were all the other times. Excited about new plane = new paint scheme to signify the beginning of a new era?
  21. found a pair of the sneaks at Jack's boardshop in Huntington Beach, but I was interested in the shirt.
  22. Not tryin' to start a fight or anything, but (cough) the shornet supporters started it!! (cough) Just playin'. Guess if the real military guys keep debating about the F-14vsF/A-18E/F thing without being able to agree, then guys like us aren't gonna be able to reach one conclusion either, except agreeing to disagree (I dunno about you, but I'm no real military guy, just a guy who likes military aircraft). I have another q about hi-viz and low-viz birds. Do planes like the shornet that have a primary role as strike fighter mostly conduct their strike missions at night? Would hi-viz birds be limited to strike missions at night because of their colorful markings, or does it really matter? and my screen name is cyde01, not clyde.
  23. a big multi-roler that is easy to maintain? More like medium sized plane that's trying and failing to be a multiroler!! The Tomcat wasn't even designed for surface attack, but from what I heard does a much better job of surface attack than the shornet. I know you've probably heard this before, but I'm still gonna say it. In the end, the hornet was just a plane designed to compete with the YF-16 for the airforce's lightweight fighter role. The politicians are just kind of forcing it into a strike fighter role.
