  1. That was back in the 80s and animation technology wasn't that great. This new production by the pirates at HG are using 21st Century techniques and this is the best they come up with.

I'll never understand this argument. Animation technology is the same as it always was -- a bunch of still pictures flashing by to give the impression of movement. They can draw the stills on a computer now, but that just makes them look shittier in my opinion. The good episodes in Macross look better than anything made in the last few years. The Anime Friend eps really do look like garbage though.

Ohh, and the booby thing. I'm no anthropologist, but I'm pretty sure that breasts got popular some time in the prehistoric era. I don't know what the fuss is about.

EDIT: Wait wait wait. Pheonix, what the f*ck are you talking about? We're seeing still shots here. Why are we even talking about animation? So you don't like the designs. Sure, they're not my favorite either. Nowhere near as good as Mikimotos. A lot better than f*cking Naruto or One Piece, but definitely not Mikimoto-league.

  2. Wow...I'm kind of in awe, especially reading Valkyrie's post. Sounds like LDs were da shiznit.

If they sold DVDs in big-assed flat boxes like LDs were sold in, with all the extras, I wouldn't miss LDs. Maybe someone should do that in Japan as a marketing gimmick.

    Thanks for the info!

  3. Hey guys, I'll be in Japan this June, leaving the US on the 6th. I wouldn't mind hooking up with any fellow fans -- I'll be in Tokyo. I hope to score some Macross goodness, and I'm also looking for Mospeada, Tenchi, and various other stuff, especially artbooks.

I'll be using the info that's already here, so please post if a shop has closed or moved. Also, please post if you know where to buy old artbooks!

  4. Hey all. I've been seeing old anime laserdics on eBay, usually going extremely cheap. This is kinda sad to me, because I remember when Laserdiscs were the thing to have in anime fandom, although when that was true I was a teenager and watched all my anime on rented VHS tapes. I remember LDs being pretty expensive new (like 50 bucks or so? Let me know if I'm wrong) , and ridiculously expensive if they were rare or out of print. It looks like DVDs have really killed the secondary market for LDs, since I see LDs of popular shows regularly go pretty cheap.

LD's hold some sort of mystique for me, probably because they were so coveted back in the 90's when I my anime interest was at its peak -- nostalgia or something. Also, the covers had huge surface area for really great pictures, and I hear many anime LDs had nice bonuses like liner-notes and stuff. They just seem more exciting than DVDs somehow.

Since I missed out on Laserdisc (I never even heard of them until the 90's when I really got into anime), I'd love to hear some stories about them.

*Do any people here collect them?

*Are there any really cool anime LDs out there we should know about?

*What cool stuff came with LD's?

*Do you think LD's will be collected someday like LP's are now, or were they just too obscure?

I can't wait to hear your replies!

  5. Might not be a bad idea there David. I know there are a lot of games I want to play on my DS when I get one. Animal Crossing, Mario Cart, Mario 64, Age of Empires, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, possibly Nintendogs. Plus some games that aren't out yet, like Children of Mana (already out in Japan) and New Super Mario. Maybe I should start buying games now.

  6. Animeigo's got an even worse episode-to-disc ratio. Isn't it 4 per disc?

I'm thinking the ADV set will be cheaper, plus it'll match my Mospeada & Southern Cross sets better.

EDIT: What do you guys consider a bargain for the whole set of Animeigo discs?

  7. Moral of the story: Don't shoot the messenger! People can hope for better if it is a realistic goal that is achievable. Sometimes the people attacking the critic come off as the most hypocritical of them all when they benefit from the suggestions made by the fan with high expection. (whose expectations go higher and higher each time)

    ...

It's not as simple as: "Buy it, or shut up!" "What can be so difficult?" "Why waste time complaining?" But the flaw with this logic is that you can still like something (enough to want to buy it) AND still have small complaints that prevent it from being perfect. The whine is justified in this instance if you are used to high standards that were met before in the past.
