1. I used to like dubs better because I didn't want to "read" anime, but now I like subs better because I don't want to hear annoying voice acting. Sure, the Japanese voice acting might be bad too, but I'll never know since I don't know any Japanese.

  2. Hey, I just realized something: old anime was typically about action: people running, fighting, jumping, whatever. New anime is about people standing around talking. I think that's why I hate melodramatic anime -- I subconciously detect that the drama is really just a ploy to excuse cheap animation. With a dramatic close-up you can zoom in on a still image of a person and just animate the mouth moving.

Ha, here's my term for that poo -Inanime.

  3. I'm glad someone resurrected my thread, because new anime really does suck. I just watched the old Bunny Girl short linked to in this thread. Holy god. That animation blows away anything I've seen made in the last ten years.

CG means, 99% of the time, cheaper, more lifeless mecha. Computer colored drawings mean, 99% of the time, cheaper, uglier coloring. Computers are used to reduce cost -- that's the whole point of the technique. It's not to make better animation. If you think it's better, it's because they told you that and you believed them.

  4. As for artbooks -- does Mac 7 have any? I'd like to get one.

    Look HERE

    338671

Alright, that one was pretty obvious, I don't know why I didn't look there first. So, there are some This is Animation books. I wonder if there are any others? Like an Entertainment Bible?

  5. Hey guys, is there a website that shows designs of the characters and mecha of Macross Zero?

    338660

    [cough]

    http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/magazi...azines_menu.htm

    [/cough]

Well, I meant a site that has line art or official designs, like robotechresearch.com has. I saw some Maz Zero stuff in the magazine pages, but not much. Mainly, I was hoping to see some armored or super VF-0's -- but I don't even know if they exist!

  6. Heck my gf doesn't mind having her face between two breasts every now-and-then either and the entertainment of that is far superior!

I was going to go tit-for-tat with 1st Border again but now I see he is clearly insane and there's no point.

    338371

Okay, that was an awesome segue.

  7. I can't believe some of you guys are getting worked up about the fine details of Robotech. I think a daily trip to the nudie bar for a week would calm everybody down, and restore order and bring back traquility to this thread.

    338311

Dude, I am down for that in a heartbeat.

Yeah, because paying half-naked women to pretend to be interested in you is a lot cooler than debating a 20 year old cartoon.

    338312

Anyone who goes to a titty bar for that reason is pathetic. I go for the T&A rubbed all over my face, not to pretend the girls like me.

  8. What the animators wanted, they should have shown or made sure dialogue said as much.

    338264

By your logic, Scott Bernard never took a poo in his whole life. If it wasn't shown in the animation or explicitly stated, it never happened.

Also, the people who wrote the story for Robotech were not the animators. It could be that Macek wanted to show the whole damn fleet destroyed, but they still had to use the original animation.

  9. but Yamato's Macross toys are the best there is.

    337610

Hah, is that a disclaimer so the Yamato fanboys don't lynch ya? I personally haven't been too impressed with Yamato's work. The 1/48 is okay, but the best valk toy ever made is obviously Bandai's Hi-Compact model. :D

  10. Well, I finally found Wheeljack! Got lucky and snagged him from the local TRU this evening. It took me about 15 minutes to get him transformed, and boy is he awesome! Alternators are everything Transformers could possibly be. I'd say they are probably the best toys of all time.

  11. If you want to cry, get Lunar 2. First ending's a real tear-jerker. And no one even dies.

One of the few games to squeeze tears out of me. LUCIAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

    336832

Lunar! My favorite video game series of all time.

As for a tear-jerker, try Lufia (SNES). If Lunar 2 made you cry, Lufia will have you sobbing like a girl.

  12. Hey, I was definitely not trying to piss off guys who love Mospeada for what it is and what it was, I watched the stuff too as a kid. Just was tossing out the idea that maybe a grim more chaotic version of it would have been interesting to watch. I mean thats what makes Lost and BSG so interesting, a breakdown of formal social codes and law, and where do people go from there.

And the guy above, who said a kind of Road Warrior kind of storyline, thats more of what I was getting towards.

    336906

I think Mospeada's style is more realistic. When authorities go away, people do not form murderous bands that fight to the last man. Anthropology shows that people are more peaceful without authorities or governments. During Katrina, all the talk about raping and murdering was B.S. Even the stories about shooting at rescue 'copters turned out to be propoganda. People mostly formed peaceful groups and helped eachother out.

  13. Stig NEVER had a strong sense of justice; he only wanted to kill Inbit.

There's no difference between justice and revenge, except for politics.

Personally I feel that this is one of the things that seperates Japanese fiction from Western (or at least American) fiction; our heros are rarely psychopaths.  If anything, they are the opposite; the only sane person in an insane world, who doesn't give a poo about what others think and strives to create the greatest good for everyone.  Japanese heros, by contrast, think only of themselves and seek only to right whatever wrong was commited against them (or their family/clan/sentai-team, whatever).

    336840

I couldn't disagree with you more. We love our heroes because they blow sh*t up. Sure, some of our heroes talk a lot of game about justice and liberty, but it always comes down to blowing sh*t up and killing "bad guys". That's pretty psychopathic to me. For every Erin Brokovich we produce, we put out ten Schwarzeneggers, Stalones, Seagals, and Van Dammes.

    [Edited for retarded mispellings]

  14. In absolutely no way shape or form was the genetic synth sounding crap from robotech better than anything. You may for some strange reason enjoy it more, but that doesn't make it better than any of the music from the 3 original shows (because it's not).

    336818

Are you talking about Lancer's songs? I can understand if you don't like those. But the BGM was very good, and at least half of it had a classic orchestra sound. Only a few tracks sounded synthetic to me (though surely a lot of it was done on synthesizers). The Robotech BGM flat-out rules.

  15. Oh, and did I mention the animation was absolutely awful?  Macross was drawn sooooo much better.

    336770

Whaaaa? Can you say Anime Friend?

I'd say, on a scale of 1 to 5, Macross' animation was 4+ on a good day and 2 on a bad. Mospeada was a consistent 3.5. Heck, I think the Inbit and Mospeadas were animated really well. The Legioss on the other hand wasn't.

Have you watched the remastered Mospeada footage, Armentage? It looks way better than the old Robotech episodes.

  16. Ooh, good thread (before MGBUTTSEXX ruined it)! I love hearing old fans like me dissin' the new crap.

Most of the writing back then was a lot better, and there was more of a sense of adventure.

    Yes!

One thing that bugs me about new anime is that nobody moves or shows any expression when talking. They'll do something retarded and melodramatic like close their eyes and look down, but they won't turn their heard or lean back or lean forward or smile real big or jump around or move any part of their body an inch. The characters are so wooden!

Another thing: It is a MYTH that new anime is better animated than old anime. It's lazy thinking: Some techniques improve with time, therefore all techniques improve with time, therefore new animation is better than old animation. Bullshit! Compare any (non-Anime Friend) Macross episode with any new show. Macross blows it away. I've seen a Valkyrie from 50 different angles in one scene of Macross, and that sort of thing just does not happen today unless it's done with CGI.
