All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!

1 Yes, you must have an Xbox One. It's a streaming deal. The Xbox is running the software, the PC is just displaying it and sending input back to the console. It's not for circumventing the console, but it can be useful. I was playing NHL 16, for which there is no PC version, while watching a hockey game on the TV that my Xbox is hooked up to. 2 You don't have to use the paid Xbox Live Gold, no. You do have to use Xbox Live Silver/a Microsoft account. Then you simply log into the Xbox itself and the Xbox app on your Windows 10 PC. If they're on the same network, your Xbox will show up in the app as available for streaming. When it comes to streaming, I've done PC to Shield, PC to PC via Steam, PS4 to Vita, PS4 to PSTV, and Xbox One to PC. I'd say that Xbox One to PC is probably the best, along with Steam.- 6894 replies

I keep hearing adhesive is rare. I don't get it. Send like every closet I check has a roll of duct tape and five bottles of wonder glue.

More time put into FO4. Some nasty difficulty spikes. I mean, I have a quest that is basically "go here, kill all super mutants." The super mutants there aren't too bad, but they have dogs that took two missiles from a missile launcher to kill (my other guns took off so little health I might as well have been trying to tickle them to death). And these dogs were killing me in maybe two hits. So I get frustrated and decide to do the next quest in my journal instead. It's a mission to go to rescue some guy being held by raiders in a building. I killed every raider guarding the building and every raider inside without using so much as a single stimpack, and most of the raiders were dropping with a single headshot.

Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
mikeszekely replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Zeta is still my favorite series, but it does require you to know who the main characters were in the original Gundam and have at least a basic understanding of the story. For non-UC stories, I like G-Gundam, Turn-A Gundam, and 00 is pretty good. SEED and Destiny have some nice mecha pr0n, but weak stories and some of the franchise's worst characters. I remember liking Gundam X, but it's been awhile since I've seen it so I don't know that I'd recommend it. AGE starts off pretty good, but falls apart in the third act. Don't waste time on G-Reco, and even though it was actually the series that got me into Gundam, I've grown to dislike Wing.- 3815 replies

Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
mikeszekely replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
If the Thunderbolt and IBO threads are getting merged with the Gundam Show thread, which does make sense, then I'm just going to put a friendly reminder to use spoiler tags for the new series. Some of us are waiting until IBO's run is done so we can binge watch the whole series, but we're still cool discussing upcoming projects and older series.- 3815 replies

Ok, I put a little time in. Combat is pretty much what you'd expect... I mean, it's prettier, and it's set around Boston instead of DC or Las Vegas, and the story is new, but it's still Fallout. First or third-person shooting/smacking, plus V.A.T.S. It's been awhile since I played FO3 or NV, but it does seem like aiming down the sights is a little more effective and V.A.T.S. a little slower to recharge. Actually, my biggest gripe could be someone else's like... the crafting system. Basically, everything you find, all the random junk scattered about in Bethesda games, can be scrapped. And that scrap can be used to build useful stuff. But I've never been a big fan of crafting in video games, so I tend to leave most junk alone, unless I think I can get a lot of caps for it. Which, it turns out later, I can't, but it then it looks like I can get a lot of useful materials, so I'll leave it clogging up my inventory because I don't care enough to craft anything with it. It's a vicious cycle. Speaking of inventory, it's changed a bit. I can't tell whether or not stuff degrades, and if it does, you certainly can't just take another one and use it to repair it. At least, not straight out of your inventory. Maybe at one of those crafting benches? It also seems like you don't just wear armor... you put on a base, like "Raider Outfit", then you stack armor bits like "leather left leg" on top of it. Kinda neat. And, if what I've seen is any indication, power armor just a really good armor. It's more like a vehicle. You actually get one very early in the game. Wearing it buffs you up pretty good and changes your HUD, but it runs on Fusion Cores and you can enter and exit the armor as you like. I used it for the mission you get it from, then parked it at the safe travel spot in an early town. Oh, and about that town... there's a town that seems like it's your home base. You can collect materials and build it up with new structures and try to get people to join your settlement. But, unlike in Fallout 3, you don't seem to have an actual house where you can store stuff you want to keep without weighing you down. At least, not as far as I've gotten, anyway. At the end of the day, I can't help thinking about how everybody seemed to be whining that Far Cry 4 was so similar to Far Cry 3, and wondering how many of those people will give Fallout 4 a pass even thought it's so similar to Fallout 3. But I, for one, loved Far Cry 4 because I loved Far Cry 3. And I'm guessing I'll probably put a ton of hours into Fallout 4 just like I put a ton of hours into Fallout 3. TL;DR: If you liked Fallout 3 you'll like Fallout 4, but if you're burned out on Fallout 3 then there doesn't seem to be anything really fresh or new about Fallout 4.

Geez! Looks like I'm playing on my desktop. Using both FO4's own auto-detect for graphics settings and Nvidia's GeForce experience, the difference between the GTX 970M in my laptop and the GTX 970 in my desktop is the difference between Low and Ultra.

I pre-loaded it yesterday, but I'm watching the baby. Can't wait for the wife to get home.

If you pick them up at Target, they're doing a buy two get one free deal. Might as well grab a third game. I was going to say yes, there are people out there like me that play primarily singleplayer. But then again, I did just say that I quit Call of Duty after MW3, and there are better singleplayer shooters out there like Wolfenstein, BioShock, or Far Cry.- 6894 replies

I gave up on the series after Modern Warfare 3. One of my friends seemed pretty excited for it, but I don't know. The first couple were genuinely good, but it seems like the franchise has devolved to ultra-short token campaigns tacked on to a multiplayer-focused shooter in a sea of multiplayer-focused shooters. Fallout 4 is pre-loaded on my computer, though.- 6894 replies

Not a Gundam fan, then? Suffice to say that Char was an elite pilot who was known for (among other things) flying mecha that was similar to the what the grunts were using, but painted entirely in various shades of red.- 17162 replies

Gundam thunderbolt anime announced!
mikeszekely replied to seti88's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I hear that argument a lot, and I'll even grant that some of it (like the Gundams in the 08th MS) play fast and loose with continuity. But, while definitely a prototype (the RGM-79 is the real MP version of the RX-78, after all), Amuro's Gundam was never the only one. Even if we ignore the Gundams 4-7 as unofficial variations, Amuro's Gundam was always the second one, and the RX-78-3 was always in Tomino's original novels. And in hindsight, despite early Gundam episodes playing up how much more powerful the Gundam is than a Zaku, the series also introduced plenty of new Zeon MS and MAs. By the end of the series, it's made very clear that it's NOT the Gundam that's special, it's Amuro. With that in mind, I don't really have a problem with there being more Gundams during the OYW (although I don't think a Gundam is necessary for a OYW story). And, while the crew of the White Base were obviously key players in the Federation's eventual victory, their story is ultimately that of a single ship in the final few months of the OYW. Other units, fighting in battles that the White Base did and did not participate in, may not have been as important, but telling their stories can simultaneously increase and focus the scope of the OYW. Now, don't get me wrong. My statement that you quoted was obviously exaggerated for comedic effect. I do strongly prefer UC Gundam to the various alternate timelines, but I honestly think there are more stories to be told by filling in the gaps between the OYW and the Gryps War, the First Neo Zeon War and the Second Neo Zeon War, and the Second Neo Zeon War and F91 (something Unicorn did brilliantly!). Heck, even between F91 and Victory (again, I'd love to see Crossbone animated!). But, I think that there are probably still plenty of great stories that can be set during the OYW, so when something like Thunderbolt comes along my reaction leans more toward "Yay, more UC Gundam!" than "ugh, another OYW story?"- 41 replies

I don't know if I should offer my congratulations or my condolences! My daughter's pretty demanding for a 3-month old. She refused a bottle for the first week after my wife went back to work, if she's awake and not being entertained by a toy/TV show/ceiling fan she will yell at us for not paying enough attention to her, she won't sit in a swing for an extended period even if we are paying attention to her, and while she sleeps pretty good at night she'll cry if she gets tired during the day (as babies are wont to do), but won't sleep in her crib. I have to rock her to sleep, then lay down with my head and shoulders propped up and have her sleep on top of my chest and stomach. I can't do any sort of housework, shower, or even poop until my wife gets home because my daughter will get upset that I'm not with her. When I set her down for lunch, which is usually just a bowl of cereal, I have to scarf it down fast before she gets pissed. A typical day for me is wake up (because baby woke up, not because I wanted to), change baby, play with baby, feed baby, rock baby to sleep, nap with baby, repeat until wife gets home around 6:00-6:30pm. I can barely handle the one; I think I'd lose my mind if there were two of her! They're totally worth it, though. There is nothing that makes me happier than seeing my daughter smile at me (and lucky me, at 3 months she's already a daddy's girl). But seriously, thank Primus that my wife is taking time off. I wanna play Fallout!

Gundam thunderbolt anime announced!
mikeszekely replied to seti88's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I checked my title: Galactic Diva. At first I thought maybe I have a custom title, as it so aptly describes me, but I see that Black Valkyrie is also a Galactic Diva. Alas... Anyways, Gundam is what Gundam is. War is hell, and plenty of characters die, but the heroes are (mostly) teenagers. I'm not familiar with Thunderbolt, so I don't know if that'll be the case here, but I suspect it will be. And that's ok! Sure, a lot of newer Gundam material has sucked, but I think they've sucked for reasons beyond adhering to Gundam (and anime in general) tropes. AGE started off pretty good, but sort of fell apart in the third arc. G-Reco had a pointless, meandering story that never really went anywhere. SEED was a whinier, crappier OYW. But, we've had good new Gundam, too. 00 (although flawed) wasn't too bad, and Unicorn was fantastic. Given the popularity of the Thunderbolt manga, and the fact that it's a UC story, I'm going to keep my hopes up on the anime.- 41 replies

Yeah, babies definitely cut into gaming time. My gaming rig used to be on all day every day, and since my daughter was born in July I rarely turn my computer on. I wound up buying a Razer laptop in the hopes that a more portable form factor might give me some flexibility. In any case, no baby is going to stop me from playing Fallout 4! For one thing, my daughter and my wife go to bed around 8:30, but I usually stay up until midnight. I consider that time my free time, and since I'm the stay-at-home parent I catch up on missing sleep by napping when the baby does. But, my wife's taking a couple vacation days around Thanksgiving. I already let her know that I'll be cramming in some Fallout time while she's home. Me, gaming PC, and if it's like 3 and NV, my primary focus will be small guns. I'm the kind of wastelander that solves his problems by shooting them in the face. I'll have to see how large the download is and how well it runs. I'll either run it on my gaming desktop (i7-3770k, 16GB RAM, GTX 970) or my Razer Blade (i7-4720HQ, 8GB RAM, GTX 970M).

The computer and electronics super geek thread
mikeszekely replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Feel free to try the other suggestions, but I think it's just an issue with Asus mobos. My desktop (Asus mobo, but I can't remember/am too lazy to check the model) would run fine for the longest time, but every so often would boot up and tell me that there was no boot device. Every time I'd have to go in and futz with the BIOS settings before it'd detect and remember that it was supposed to be booting from an SSD. Updating the BIOS/firmware didn't do diddly, either. Eventually the mobo quit detecting that SSD entirely. I replaced it with a different SSD which was detected fine and I haven't had that SSD problem anymore, but now my PC will at times refuse to POST. It'll be maybe one boot up out of 20. And when it happens, I just shut it all back down, wait a moment, and start it all back up again. I swear, last Asus mobo I'm buying. My previous mobo was also an Asus, and while I didn't have any weird issues like that (of course, I also wasn't using SSDs then) and it took forever to boot. Not because my hard drive was slow or Windows took too long to boot, but because it'd take forever to show a splash screen and run the POST. I'm talking like 30 second before it'd even try to load Windows. -

Miitomo. The more interesting news is that they're rolling out new Nintendo IDs and a rewards program to replace the ol' Club Nintendo. While the new Nintendo IDs look like they're going to sync more of what you do with the cloud and allow for an interconnected Nintendo experience across mobiles, tablets, PCs, the Wii U, the 3DS, and eventually the NX, there's no word on whether digital purchases will be tied to Nintendo IDs going forward or still hardware IDs.- 6894 replies

Slightly tempted, due to the low price, but I have Steam installed on a Mac mini hooked up to my living room TV. It's kind of superfluous to my needs. That said, I've streamed a couple of games to that Mac, and Steam's in-home streaming works pretty well. As long as the Steam Link works as well, it'll be money well spent.- 6894 replies

Supposedly I am. I bought a Razer Blade directly from Razer, and the promo they were running was a game code for either Rainbow Six Siege or Assassin's Creed Syndicate. On my order, though, it's listed as a code for MGSV, but I've yet to receive any sort of game code despite the note that says they'll email it a week after the laptop ships and despite the fact that the laptop has been in my possession for nearly two weeks now. Sigh. Anyway... I'm sort of not surprised to hear that Syndicate is good. The first AC wasn't, AC II was, AC III wasn't, Black Flag was, Unity wasn't. Following that pattern, Syndicate was bound to be good. (Brotherhood and Revelations don't count, as they were just more AC II, and Rogue doesn't count because it's just more Black Flag).- 6894 replies
