Rod- Lose the uber-reflectivness on the red feet. Mechmaster- A little too mottled for my tastes. Other than that, excellent work, keep it up! Rod- The last pic you posted seriously looks like it is a photo of a vinyl model kit (except for the aforementioned feet). It makes me giggle with excitement. Mechmaster- get crackin, dawg! But if you want to leave the Glaug aside and work on the Queadluun Rau that's just fine by me...

Harmony Gold & Toynami releasing DYRL? Toys
the white drew carey replied to Duke Togo's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Could you point out your source on this? At first I had heard that Toynami had compensated the creator of the Wonderfest kit for using the design as their SuperPoseables. But then someone told me that he wasn't compensated, and wasn't asked, although they did officially credit him in some way. I'm just curious what the actual story is behind this. I know for a fact that Toynami didn't have Banpresto's permission when using the Banpresto SD Keychain designs, nor did they have Bandai's permission in using their designs for the MPC (as much as people say it isn't a copy, it is. just deal with it.) So I'm curious what the actual story is between the Wonderfest kits and the SuperPoseables*? *which do suck, by the way. i would've complained about a toy that poorly made even when I was a kid^!!! ^assuming I'm not one anymore. -

So true. Many people have erroneously stated in this thread that there is no difference between the TV and the DYRL Valks except for paintschemes. But this is wrong. There are visual differences, due to the fact that Kawamori upgraded the designs for DYRL. To say they're the same visually is like saying the Hornet and Super-Hornet look the same. They do at first glance, but closer inspection points out the differences. -

It all depends what they did with it. It would have to be subbed and restored for me to think about it, since I already have two copies (albeit bootlegs). On Moral Ground- I really think the only way HG would release it is if they did obtain the rights from the current U.S. holder. If HG does announce that they will release DYRL, I'm sure that BigWest will request that HG prove it holds the license to do so. -

wow. that totoaly describe s a company who paid for the rights of a show. yeah it does. Ali Sama- Let's try this again, shall we? The statement you made, which I quoted above, seems to me that you're saying it's OK for a company to make toys simply because they paid for the rights to the show. I was responding that simply because a company pays for the rights to the show, that doesn't mean they can do anything they want with the franchise itself. Which is kind of what your statement, which I was replying to, was implying. ILLUSTRATED TRAIN OF CONVERSATION: HG makes bootleg DYRL toys. -> Bootlegs, why are they bootlegs? -> "Insert defintion of Bootleg here" -> Ali Sama: "wow. that totoaly describe s a company who paid for the rights of a show. yeah it does." -> TWDC: "Rights to show doesn't mean rights to everything." -> Ali Sama: "Peopelw ith money cna buy anything"... "get with the prorgam." I'll tell you this, I am with the program (much more so than you, I'd like to think). I never once stated that BigWest/Studio Nue haven't sold/licensed DYRL rights to HG (although I do feel it's quite unlikely, given the history of the licensing debacle). So why are you rambling on about these companies are there to make money and that I should get with the program? In no way during your statement did actually address my response to your original statement. -

Sadly enough, you can't burn the memory from my head. -

It's funny, because no matter how much we dislike HG's business practices, I've never seen anyone here deny the fact that the one thing HG always had the right to do was distribute the SDF: Macross TV shows. Which is exactly what the AnimeIgo Boxset is. The problem really lies in the question of whether or not it was intended to let whomever Tatsunoko distribute with mangle the show itself into something different. -

no one wants to admit to owning it I seriously think the rights were lost in the Bermuda Triangle. -

No worries, mate! I've been following this whole damned licensing/ownership debacle for a while. To my knowledge, this is the first time that HG is officially trying to release an official Macross design not from the original TV series. They've been preaching the whole "Everything outside of Japan" line for a while, and have stalled efforts to release certain Macross projects over here. But this being the first non-SDF:Macross product they're advertising makes this an interesting situation. The MacII and Mac+ prodcutions are completely off limits to HG, and I don't think they'll ever try to challenge that. The fact that Manga holds the U.S. licenses to both programs casts doubt on HG's "all over the world" claim, and challenging Manga's rights means that HG would finally have to produce the document which they say gives them worldwide ownership. They've only gotten by so far by continually refusing to provide proof of their claims. -

wow. that totoaly describe s a company who paid for the rights of a show. yeah it does. Ali Sama- Take your own advice and learn international copyright and other laws. Just because a company procures the distribution rights for a show doesn't give them ALL of the rights to the franchise, as HG claims it has. -

Never happen. BigWest/Studio Nue's U.S. Copyright to Macross Plus is still in effect and, to my knowledge, has never been officially challenged by HG. -

Huh? Studio Nue didn't do MacII, BigWest did. -

This most probably falls under the auspices of "General Merchandise", which they do have the rights of through their connection with Tatsunoko. -

You know, if it doesn't have a BigWest sticker on the box, it isn't proper. Nods and caveates are all nice and dandy, but it still doesn't change the fact that there is a serious doubt to HG/Toynami's legal ability to put out these toys. I learned long ago to never buy Toynami products simply due to their complete lack of quality. Even if some type of agreement was reached, and Toynami could make officially licensed Macross: DYRL toys, I probably still wouldn't buy them. -

Seriously- Any licensing curiosity should be directed to the licensing thread where this issue was first posted. Any discussions about how crappy these repaints are going to look should stay right here. -

Nah. Although I appreciate the stylized sculpt of the Wonderfest Valk, the design simply doesn't lend itself to a poseable toy. It looks really silly. Also, add in the fact that, as usual, Toynami basically stole the design from the guy who did it for Wonderfest... well I'd rather not support a company who does that. -

Wow. Could HG/Toynami be pulling a Sunwards and testing the waters to see how much they can get away with? -
No, no... It's BREEtai. Get it right.

Lookie here: Valhalla listing at www.mahq.net I think it's pretty neat-o design, although that asteroind incident was a close one.

Much, much better. The turrets look way better than before. Personly, I'm not too fond of the brown block on back, but I understand the idea, so I'll deal. The design is key, but the 3D render you've done still hurts the overall impact. It actually looks like a papercraft ship, because it's so simplisticly blocky. But the advance you've made already show great promise. Aim for the stars, Tiger.

Sadly, I voted to scrap them both. I don't think they're crap, but that's the closest vote I could choose that represented my thoughts: Scrap Them. IMHO, the problem with the ships is that they don't look either 1) Uber-realistic (taking into account how a large ship in space really would look, simply due to it's operational needs and design, or 2) Nor are they exciting and flashy, which is the complete other end of the realism spectrum, but makes for good eye candy. They just don't look like something to write home about. Many of the details, including the gun turrets and whatnot, are especially bland. Plus, the multi-hued hull patterns (seperate hull-plating?) is waaay too pronounced and gives me a slight headache when I look at it. I think you're on the right track but, no offense, the designs are fairly generic looking. I vote for you too keep designing. Sketch out multiple ideas and fiddle with them. Also, don't be afraid to dedicate large amounts of time designing small feature such as the gun turrets, missile racks, hanger bays, etc. The more thought that you put into it, the greater your desire will be to continually refine the design until you've produced something interesting and unique.
