  1. well, something like this would certainly pucker yer arsehole... or this... ed: I'm still not gonna go pay to see this movie...looks like utter shite. damn hacks, re-hashing the original.
  2. Hmm. Germany is a country that is at the turn of the new century once again unified, her military is again building world-class tanks and submarines at the pinnacle of technological development, and her soccer team is tear-assing its way to World Cup dominance. Should we, the rest of the world, be worried? ed: oh, wait a minute. Italy actually won in '34 and '38. Go figure...
  3. After Brazil's shocking loss to the Netherlands, I'd be interested to see the reports on the reactions from their home country. The coach will likely have to go into protective custody. Those folks take their "football" perhaps a bit too seriously. But my God, Brazilian women are beautiful though...
  4. BIN-GO! Hear, Hear! Well said.
  5. Well, at least they got rid of the uniform bellbottoms. I like how they've stayed true to the design of the ship from the original show. But I really hate this trend among moviemakers with changing key characters and/or story elements to make them more "hip" or politically correct or something. Like making the doctor a woman? WTF? Straight BEWL-SHEIT, man! Too bad they couldn't go with something like the Yamato Redux... pays closer homage to the design of the actual ship, proportions make it look even larger and more formidable. Got to take an unofficial tour of the Missouri(?) once a long time ago as a kid. There's something awe-inspiring about the big battleships, and that admiration has never waned. Got to see the U.S.S. Wisconsin at anchor a couple weeks back. Even as an adult, as I approached the ship looming ever larger with each step, my inner voice was screaming, childlike: "FUH-KEN AWE-SOOOOOME!!!"
  6. Predators Looks like a thinly veiled re-hash of the original concept moreso than a "sequel." Actually, looks more like a steaming pile of sh*t. Hap-hazardly strung-together kill scenes that have been done 'til they're cliches. Don't know if Laurence Fishburne nor Adrien Brody can carry this one. LOL, I kept expecting the Spike TV announcer's voice: "...from the producers of Deadliest Warriors..." So where the hell are Max Geiger, Armand Dorian and Geoff Desmoulin? "Predators! Are you REH-DAY! Humans! Are you REH-DAY! THREE! TWO! ONE!!" "Yup, getting your chest splayed with those alien 2-pronged forearm blades would definitely produce some serious trauma. I'd have to say that'd be a kill..."
  7. Hmm, now that's strictly subjective--could start a thread all its own on the debate for that. There are plenty of good candidates (and I used to not even like westerns), and for various reasons. Clint Eastwood's put in some good ones, like The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, and Unforgiven (another fav). Tombstone is a personal fav of mine, an excellent cast that made for memorable characters, particularly Doc and Wyatt. Wyatt Earp is a good one too, as it has more depth; like how it looks more into the lifetime of events that shaped the man, not just one infamous shootout. There's The Shootist, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and among the "guilty pleasures" The White Buffalo; not necessarily great for high production values by any means, just remember them being standard Saturday a'noon fare on the idiot-box, as a kid.
  8. No sir, I don't like it. Is it just me, or does the Captain's beard look really artificial? This story needs to remain animated...
  9. Henry Fonda's character "Frank" in Once Upon a Time in the West was a great mean sonofabi*ch... 1) ruthless: has his men murder an entire family as they prepare for a wedding feast at thier home; but they leave one survivor, a little boy. When one of the men calls their leader Frank by name, asking what to do with the child, Frank (Henry Fonda) draws his pistol and slowly takes aim at the last remaining witness. With a self-satisfied grin, he pulls the trigger. He tries to frame Cheyenne and his gang for the murders. 2) ambitious: no longer content with just being a hired gun, Frank wants to become a wealthy businessman and rival men like Morton the railroad baron. 3) cruel: among his past victims is Harmonica's (Charles Bronson) older brother. A younger Frank strides out of the desert to the isolated ruin of a Spanish mission--a lone arch with a bell hanging at the top. He places a brand-new harmonica into a young man's mouth, telling him to keep his lovin' brother happy. The youth's hands are bound behind him, and his older brother, also bound, is standing on his shoulders with a noose around his neck. Frank and his men wait for the inevitable moment when the boy's legs will give way and complete the hanging. The doomed man curses Frank and kicks his younger brother away. The harmonica drops out of the young man's mouth as he falls into the dust. 5) just plain mean [Frank just knocked Morton off of his crutches] Morton: Is that sufficient to make you feel stronger? Frank: I could squash you like a wormy apple! Morton: Sure. But you won't do it... because it's... not to your advantage... Frank: Hmm. Who knows how far you'd have gone with two good legs, huh? This is a good movie. Makes wonderful use of pacing and suspense, and uses the film score to great effect, no wasted or superfluous dialogue. Something modern filmmakers/audiences don't seem to have the attention or patience for...
  10. ask, and ye shall receive... in a tacky, roundabout sort of way. honestly, I'm surprised they didn't work in a cameo by Richard Dean Anderson somewhere (did they?).
  11. I just threw up a little in my mouth...
  12. If it's any consolation, they're all stereotypes. Charicatures of people and their hang-ups, carried to extremes. From Huey's militant idealism; to Riley's incurable desire to be "hip-hop/thug"; to Uncle Ruckus' self-hatred; to Ed and Gin Rummy's "identity crisis"...we've all seen and/or met people who are like that--to a degree--in our own regular lives. Hell, I got in-laws/relatives like some of the characters! ed: OMG, I forgot just how funny Mr. Wuncler is! Ed Asner is brilliant in his role. --"That's right. Every morning I wake up and put one foot on the ground and the other up the a$$ of a 12 year-old Indonesian girl." --"If you don't get that bullsh*t outta my face, bit*h!" He's not necessarily racist; he's equally offensive to everyone. He even gets along/relates with Granpa Freeman, becomes his pal. He's just wealthy and old enough to speak his mind, and not give a fu*k! Hell, I used to work for a guy like that--though not as extreme. He was a riot, may he rest in peace...
  13. I think that's McGruder's goal moreso than anything else. In a lot of ways, the "oppressed" can be just as narrow-minded and bigoted as "the Man." In the end, I think the show is holding up a mirror for America to look at (obviously, McGruder's focus is on black folks/hip hop culture in particular). We can laugh at it initially; but it ought to make us think (hopefully) after a little reflection. Case in point: "*igga moments" at once both funny because of the absurdity of it, yet embarassingly close to the truth, sometimes... The harshest truths often come in the form of a joke --Anon
  14. Yeah, and now that he's getting a paycheck for World Of Warcraft, he don't have to cow-tow fo' those suckas!
  15. Is the show racist? No, I don't think it's intent is that. Just an unflinching look at the hypocrisy--and racism--in a lot of folks who often claim to be victims of racism and "the Man" themselves. Aaron McGruder pulls no punches, and I applaud him for that. MLK episode is still my favorite. I've not gotten to watch any of the new eps lately...
  16. While the uniform may look more like something that'd be '40s era, the mask gets a big NO. Too much of an S&M vibe going with that...
  17. Thank bloody Christ...
  18. Alas, if only I could take comfort in that. But the cynic in me just thinks: perhaps the greatest achievement (unfortunately for us) of modern Western civilization has been to largely upset, if not completely thwart the process of natural selection.... far too many of the open mouth breathers manage to survive to adulthood, blighting the rest of the world with their offspring, maybe even succeed enough to get their own reality TV show.
  19. Oh no, not necessarily real world events that would warrant the old "This story is based on actual events...certain incidents, characters and timelines have been changed.." disclaimer, per se. I guess the disturbing aspect for me is that there is probably far too great a number of intellectually stunted people out there, who'll see stuff like this and think the Civil War was fought with things like the dynamite crossbows, or tank-turreted wagons, or cast-iron steam-powered jet-packs...
  20. ed: and yes, Tombstone. KICKS. ASS. "Ah'm your Huckleberry..." The historical events that inspired the legend of Wyatt Earp are just as good as any Hollywood make-believe. The real Wyatt Earp would bit*h slap Jonah Hex with his Peacemaker...
  21. Just from the snippets I've seen in the trailers, this looks to be a real stinker. Dialogue sounds hackneyed and crude, like it's gonna be a bunch of one-liners and toilet humor, dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. Damn shame that the younger generations coming up behind us will grow up thinking absolute nonsense like this to be somewhere near historically accurate or true... Not that Once Upon A Time In The West is a Tour de Force or anything--but Jeezus. Horse-mounted gatling guns? Dynamite crossbows? For fu**'s sake. Just stop the stupidity please.
  22. As bad as it was, I actually kinda liked the 1990 version of Captain America. Go figure.
  23. Those are still LOL funny--especially Mum-Ra!
  24. Hah! Everyone knows: Hannah Barbera's original Johnny Quest (1964-65) is the standard by which all others must be measured, in terms of quality and style of animation.
  25. Well, since you brought it up... ??? I don't know if/when I'll ever get around to seeing that film.
